Title: Whatever happened to the colourist Chris Blythe?
Post by: dracula1 on 14 April, 2012, 12:35:31 PM
I was fondly mulling over some back issues of the Meg and 2000ad the other day and noticed the magical colouring talent of Chris Blythe in many an issue. Does anybody know what he is currently working on?  The last I heard he was taking up some writing duties along with his colouring.

Thanks Crazy Fox Machine  :-[ I don't buy the current prog's anymore just the reprinted GN's (hence the lack of knowledge on this).

Here you go:

The writing gig he did was Angel Fire drawn by Steve Parkhouse which they self-published back in 2005 but Carlton reprinted it in 2007 and worth picking up a copy for the £3 it is going for on Amazon (and with a review by Alan McKenzie too):

I liked Angel Fire, although I felt it could have been done in half the page count. It's definitely worth picking up for £3, though.

Thanks lads and lasses,  I'm now fully updated on this. I'll check out Angel Fire via the links. It sounds like an interesting project they undertook.  :D

He wrote a couple of well-above-average future shocks too.  Mind you, future shocks have got much better in the last few years; maybe because they're used more sparingly

Wish Chris had more of a web presence - I'd be all over his blog if he had one, soaking up tips and tricks. And Angelfire for only £3? I'm tempted to buy it again!

No worries, fella. I remember a really good one he did with Steve Parkhouse about a future war that was censored and digitally altered for TV.  It was funny, violent, satirical, touching and sad:  Not bad for five pages

In the early days, I was the only person who had the moral courage to point out that Chris couldn't do the colour red, and used orange instead.

I feel that my constructive comments helped shape Chris into the top tier colourist he is today. He's easily my favourite colourist.

Additional comment: his Future Shocks were good.

He was one of the first guys out there doing full on digital colours and made it big in the US too. Orange is used alot in comicdom as it evokes and enhances the feeling of movement and action.

He used to have excellent work-throughs here. http://daedalus-uk.co.uk Animations of the colouring process for 2000AD and Meg covers. No sign of those now which is a real shame.

I remember at the time I read them being struck by the way both Chris' stories revolved around very visual ideas. Hardly surprising you might say, but it made me interested in seeing more.

D'Israeli's Future Shocks were pretty good too.

Quality Future Shocks you can't beat them (probably my most favourite thing ever in 2000ad from way back). I do miss 'Shocks' by the legendary Moore though, can't we lure him back some how?! ... perhaps with a free ceramic blade beard trimmer!  :D
