I wonder why the Stormtroopers are equipped with this new lightsabre fighting gear when the jedi have been extinct for 30 years and there only seem to be 2 lightsabres left in the galaxy, one of them being wielded by their boss.

Cheers, Pyroxian. But there's no chanceof my showing the lad American Werewolf - can't have a third generation of this family blighted by Agutter worship. Also, demon Nazis behind the curtain are a scare too far.

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten about that bit. Perhaps I won't let my son watch it just yet after all...

If it were up to me alone, I would let my 11 and 8 year olds watch Alien. It's my favourite film of all time and a bit of an obsession for me, so I can't wait to introduce my kids to it. Unfortunately for me (and the kids), my wife will not stand for it.

I've got her to bend the rules a little bit and, with her blessing, shown the kids Poltergeist, Jaws, Dracula (the 1979 one with Frank Langella), both Hellboy films and Space Balls, all of which are of a 12 certificate or higher (no 18s though).

Me and the eldest had a day off together recently, and while the missus was out, I let him watch Terminator 2, which he loved to bits. I've sworn him to secrecy though, as the amount of swearing in it would send my wife into an apoplectic rage. As you say though Doc, he hears worse at school, so I don't see it as an issue.

The next time me and the lad are at home alone, I'm thinking of letting him choose an 18 certificate to watch. He's expressed an interest in seeing An American Werewolf in London, which I saw when I was about 12 or 13 without suffering any trauma.

In short, play it by ear. If you think they'll be alright with Alien, go for it. My biggest concern about letting them watch Alien isn't that they'll be too scared, it's that they won't like it. I'd be mortified...

Music / Re: What's everyone listening to...?

Been listening to Ty Segall and all his various musical projects. Brilliant stuff.

If you're a fan of 70's heavy metal and psychedelia, I'd advise giving his band Fuzz a try. Blinding.

This is perfect timing. My 8 year old daughter is just starting to get interested in comics, mainly because I gave her some Hideshi Hino horror manga to read. She'll definitely love Misty.

Don't suppose we have any information on publication dates?

No sarcasm intended, it's hard to refute. There's no way I'd have dragged the family to see The Dino Theme Park of Dr Moreau (although...), and it's very difficult to disentangle brand nostalgia from the experience of any of these franchise things.  Course part of my enthusiasm for the original JP was inspired by my enjoyment of the book, which it is in most (but not all) ways superior to, as well as childhood addiction to Valley of the Gwangii and all things dino, so it's hard to know where to dispense with nostalgia and expectation...

I should have known you were, as usual, being a nice man.

Your perceived sarcasm did make me realise that, especially these days, you could say the same for most films.

In the same way that I reckon NOBODY would have anything nice to say about The Phantom Menace if, instead of being a Star Wars film, it was just called 'Generic Space Adventure Film', I'm completely convinced that nobody would have any time for Jurassic World without the nostalgic connection to the far, far superior Jurassic Park.

Excellent point!

I feel a sense of pride that I managed to coax some sarcasm out of you T-back.

I'd just like to offer my support and say that Radiator is one hundred percent correct in everything he says about Jurassic Park. It's a beautifully crafted film in every regard.

Jurassic World can be most charitably described as 'content'.

So, the Planet Replicas teaser in the new thrill mail.  That is the top of the Mekon's melon, isn't it?

Either that or Tharg's ball sack. Hope it's the ball sack.

Molch-R seems to actually be morphing into Tharg. He's got the hair and the tiny beard and he's calling us Earthlets.

He just needs to be painted green and have a jam tart stuck to his head and the transformation will be complete.

You can take my geek card because...

I think Guillermo del Toro is the most overrated film maker around. I really don't like most of his films at all.

Of the ones I've seen - Mimic, Hellboy 1 and 2, The Blade film he did, Don't be Afraid of the Dark and Pacific Rim all suffer form the same problems. They're too long and have uninteresting characters.

Having said that I thought Pan's Labyrinth was pretty entertaining and had an excellent baddie.

When he tries to "go Hollywood", the results are flawed at best. As you say, Pan's Labyrinth is fantastic, as is The Devil's Backbone. These are more personal films which don't feel like they've been shoehorned into mainstream convention.
