Announcements / Re: Dave Evans, R.I.P.

Just returning from long term lurking to say how gutted I am and to pay my respects.
I met Dave a few times at cons and he always made me feel like I'd known him a lot longer than I had.
A lovely, talented man gone too soon.

Hey Dave! Yep, I'm getting back on the horse. The drawing horse.
I'd be interested to see what you've got for me.

The crystal foxes were, at least in some scenes, animatronic puppets. Something I didn't realise when I watched the film.

I'm going to have to come to terms with the fact that I'm wrong, an idiot, or both, because I thought it was fantastic.

I think we're WELL past the old "No publicity is bad publicity" maxim in these days of social media.

This is clearly a petition started and supported by blubbering, entitled man-babies.

So I went into it not expecting much. Just some good old fashioned Star Wars fun. And I got disappointed.

This illustrates my point exactly. I think a lot of people disliked it because it wasn't Star Warsy enough. Or at least it didn't fit with what they think Star Wars ought to be.

That's a perfectly valid reason for disliking it by the way, I'm not trying to belittle anyone's opinion. You enjoyed Rogue One, I didn't, I enjoyed The Last Jedi, you didn't. At least we both got Star Wars films that we enjoyed.

I can't stop thinking about this film and how much I loved it. The themes of failure, bad decisions, coming to terms with things that went wrong. It's refreshing and interesting subject matter for Star Wars.

I've seen a lot of people taking issue with it from the stand point that it's not what they want or expect from a Star Wars film, which I find a bit odd. There's even a petition to get Disney to strike The Last Jedi from canon, push back Episode 9, and re-make Episode 8 the way these "fans" want it.

I mean...I can't imagine what is going on in the minds of these people.

I can fully understand why people wouldn't like the film. It does break from the established traditional Star Wars themes, and certain characters are shown to be less than perfect. These are the reasons I loved it.

As I said though, I really enjoyed it and I'm 46.

I suppose it depends on what you expect from a new Star Wars film really. There were issues with the pacing here and there, and some of the humour felt forced. As I've said, one whole section could have basically been cut without it effecting the story, but it did more right than wrong in my eyes.

I don't really know what "It could have been so much more" means I suppose.

I loved this latest installment in the series of space adventure films for children. And so did my children.

Genuinely thought it was the best Star Wars since the original trilogy. Couldn't be happier about Rey's parentage, loved the interaction between Kylo Ren and Rey. Luke was fantastic. Exciting space battles and plot development.

The only bit I didn't like was Finn and Rose's pointless side mission, but otherwise, brilliant.

Okay, who are you and what have you done with SBT?

Corrie and Jeremy Kyle definitely count as horror.

I realise you didn't ask for recommendations, and you've probably read some, if not all of these, but here are a few series that I would wholeheartedly suggest taking a look at -

Locke and Key, Requiem Vampire Knight (Pat Mills at his most inventive), Descender, Black Science, Hellboy, Naruto (better than you think!), Full Metal Alchemist, Promethea, Top Ten, RASL, Saga.

I could go on, but you're probably already rolling your eyes, so I'll stop there.

Best. Thread. Ever.

The composition, the execution, the humour and the sheer amount of fantastic ideas.

A standing ovation for you sir.

All the stories read as an opening chapter to a new series. Whether that's because there are concrete plans to continue, or just an optimistic open ended approach in case the special does well (which seems to be the likely option, and it seems like it's selling well. Yay!), we'll have to wait and see.

Personally, I enjoyed it and I thought the writing and art throughout was of a very high standard. I'd LOVE to see more.

My only niggle is that it wasn't particularly scary (aside from The Sentinels which was genuinely chilling). The focus in most of the stories was on the invincible, seemingly super-human protagonists who I never believed were in any danger. I'd like to see more stories where the monsters and villains have the upper hand and the protagonists are desperately fighting to survive, rather than just effortlessly booting them in the face.

On the whole though, I'd love to Scream/Misty in the newsagent every week/month/quarter/year. Gimme more!

Are there a lot of rose tinted spectacles being worn here?

Well, I bought it (for the second time), this time on the PS4....and it is really showing its age. The graphical improvements do not go very far in addressing its issues and ( in my opinion) the game reaches mediocre at best, particularly by modern gaming standards.

I would only recommend it to anyone who was either heavily invested in the character or had a serious love for the old game......though you could pick up any of the Gears of War games and see similar gameplay done significantly better (without Rogue of course).

To be honest, I agree with a lot of this, although I wouldn't say it was mediocre. There are a lot of cool and exciting gameplay mechanics, and a huge choice of weaponry and gadgets that open up a ton of different strategies which allow you to approach each set piece in a variety of different ways. I also love the scavenging/crafting aspect, which I remember thinking was really innovative when the game was first released, but has since become standard in adventure games.

Some of the gameplay mechanics are dated and the improved graphics still don't match up to the standard of modern consoles. At best, it looks and plays like an early PS3 game. My 13 year old son was laughing hysterically at the jerky cut scene animations.

The enemy AI is practically non-existent, with enemies either spotting you instantly and blasting away, or completely ignoring the fact that you just killed their colleague with a headshot while they were stood right next to them, often saying "who's there?" as their pal crumples to the floor for unintentional comic effect.

Most of my enjoyment comes from the fact that this is Rogue Trooper, and being able to run around Nu Earth killing Norts, freeing Stamels, shooting down Hoppas and telling Gunnar to "synth out!" is a huge thrill.

Without Rogue, I doubt I'd even bother playing.
