Title: 2000AD Cover of the Year - THE RESULT!
Post by: Pete Wells on 03 January, 2012, 08:11:11 AM
The results are in and have been checked and double checked by myself and then independently checked (and, of course, corrected) by Emperor himself who I'd like to send a million thanks to! Over 60 people took the time to vote so I'd like to say thanks to those for taking the time too.

Without further ado, in reverse order, the results are as follows, (Pete nervously opens envelope...)

Bubbling under we have these three beauties...

(http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RCKiXAvw7B0/TZjONJghopI/AAAAAAAACa4/3iLEMkFagok/s400/Shakara%2Bwraparound%2Bcover2.jpg)  (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CZlBKz0B1-8/Tc7WaIy9DSI/AAAAAAAACmg/zjahUxACJj4/s400/judge_anderson_2000ad_cover_by_thisismyboomstick-d3gbplh.jpg) (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yd9l3Bs2UYY/TalemM9jtEI/AAAAAAAACfI/20JTsYoC9vU/s400/Flesh%2BEp%2B6%2Bcover%2B-%2Bcolour%2Bcrop.jpg)

Shakara attacking an alien armada with a freaking planet by Henry Flint (Prog 1725), the excellent Anderson by Garry Brown (Prog 1734) and Flesh by James Mackay (Prog1729.) Great to see two artists being recognised who've made their début this year...

In fifth place we have the return of Liam Sharp with this amazing wraparound for Prog 1724...

And in fourth place, the always amazing Henry Flint with this action-packed Dredd classic for Prog 1763:

Third place was a tie between these two heavyweights...

(http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-e6KcDRrjxwo/TZjOMv_zZ4I/AAAAAAAACaw/JOjJxMue0O8/s400/Shakara%2BFinal%2BCover1.jpg) (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TkPKr0V8DwA/Tfb3V2fg-XI/AAAAAAAACts/s0-SMr_LcDM/s400/Brainblooms%2Bcover%2Bart%2Bflat.jpg)

Progs 1725 by the genius that's Henry Flint (again!) and prog 1738's astounding Brainbloom cover by Cliff Robinson.

Runner up is this modern classic by Greg Staples for Prog 1750:

And the winner, by an absolute landslide, is the bona fide genius that is D'Israeli with the beautiful Hokasi inspired Dirty Frank cover of Prog 1752! Congratulations to a worthy, worthy winner!

Congratulations to all!

Thanks for all the work that's gone into running this comp.

The results just go to show that once again there ain't no cover as good as a 2000ad cover. All those that 'placed' are just wonderful and my top two didn't so!

Thanks for running this Pete. Now are you _sure_ you got it right this time? ;)

My top 3 came in as top 3. Does that make me very average or a good judge of a cover?

A well-deserved winner (it was my #1 choice too.) Plaudits to Pete for putting this all together.

Thanks for running this Pete and for the covers blog.
2 of my votes were in the top 3 and D'Isreali is very a worthy winner.

Happy New Year to all the community members & Squax everywhere  :D

Job jobbed. Beautiful stuff - every single one of those would have been worthy winners. D'Israeli is just glorious!

If you have two at joint-third, then the next one following will be fifth, not fourth.

Oh, Pete. Not again.

ignore the copy-boy, that was great work Pete-and-support-team, your efforts are much appreciated.  While I didn't vote for it myself (don't have the Prog, matter of principle), I think it says a lot for the descrimination of 2000AD fans that such a clever design was chosen over other worthy but more traditional boys'-adventure-paper fare, such as thems with dinosaurs and guns on what I done voted for meself.

Gah - how did I miss this?  Luckily, my top vote would just have been another pebble in the landslide for D'Israeli's fantastic cover.  Nice work, Pete!

Thanks to Pete for running this and getting the result out just in time for the Eagle Awards - last year's winner made the shortlist, so there is no reason this year's can't either.

What impressed me was the wide spread of votes, nearly three quarters of 2011's covers got at least one vote, which shows how hard the voting was because of the consistent high quality covers, so all the cover droids deserve a round of applause there.

He was nervous and full of doubt after last time, I meanwhile am confident of the result and have a spreadsheet to prove it ;)

Oh, Pete. Not again.

I did it that way when I sent him the results, so this was clearly a deliberate decision on his behalf, possibly.  :-X

Yeah that cover was closing in on having twice the number of votes as the second place one, so it wouldn't have made much difference. However, while #2 was well ahead of the back everything else in the top ten could have been changed by a vote or two so it is always wise to vote ;)

I'm sorry I missed this vote.  All excellent results from the past years progs.
My favourite was the Liam sharp wraparound cover from prog 1724.   I do love my FLESH !

And we cut over to D'Israeli for his acceptance speech:

QuoteI was delighted to discover that the Dirty Frank "Hokusai" cover for 2000AD Prog 1752 has won Cover of the Year 2011 on the 2000AD Covers Uncovered blog. Thanks to everyone from Covers Uncovered, ECBT2000AD and the 2000AD messageboards who voted. It's been a corking year for 2000AD, so competition was stiff, and I'm proud to have placed in a field that included Greg Staples, Cliff Robertson and Henry Flint (no less than 3 times!)

Thanks where thanks are due: Tharg-in-Residence Matt Smith came up with the idea of basing a cover on a Hokusai print, and also approved what is a very radical take on Dirty Frank. 2000AD design stalwart Simon Parr also deserves thanks for his ever-sensitive design work. Thanks, gentlemen.

Finally, and at the risk of turning into Richard Attenborough, thanks to Pete Wells of 2000AD Covers Uncovered for his ongoing work showing the time and effort that goes into the cover art for the Galaxy's Greatest every week.

Thanks for all your thanks folks! It's an absolute pleasure to do but it does take a while I must say, especially with my mathematically challenged brain! Still, to be thanked by D'Israeli on his blog has made my day!

Here's what the other winners had to say to us:

Greg Staples: "Thats wonderful news, thank you!"

Cliff Robinson: "Hey, third place, that's terrific! You're right, that's good company I'm in there. I particularly liked Greg's wraparound cover. That's a beautiful painting. I keep meaning to email him to say 'cheers' for including my Judge Death pic. I got a kick out of seeing that and I should let him know."

Henry Flint: "That's great! that's the first time I've had one in the running let alone two. Many thanks!"

Liam Sharp: "Thanks buddy! Posted on Facebook!"

So there you are fellas, as well as letting the work know which covers you liked, you also made a bunch of great artists very happy!
