Title: Rogue Trooper Short

Not by the Minty/Stront team, but I acted as VFX supervisor on this, sorting out Rogue's eyes, all the compositing etc.

The guy behind it has worked as a stuntman/supervisor on some big features.

Reading between the lines I'd say it's Rebellion having to protect its IP while still allowing fans to produce non-profit films.  At least that's what I hope it is!

There's no disclaimer in that trailer to say the right of the character are owned by 2000ad/Rebellion.

That's what I'm hoping; it's just an administrative snafu that results from a lack of experience or familiarity in these things.  As you say, Sheridan, Rebellion do need to assert their rights.

First screening today at Sci-fi London in Stratford.

Two more screenings tomorrow and thursday in the Shorts 1 block starting at 3:15.

Good pic and sound there, will post when I know when it's going online.

Thanks Bolt,

was OK, not packed but it was starting at 1pm on a weekday, so wasn't really expecting it - and the film had to be delivered in a special format so wasn't even sure if it would work...

The producer is going today and tomorrow, but it's still afternoon weekdays.

Still, nice to see it on a big screen with an audience, and good to see some other shorts as well.

I'd have been tempted to book a day off work to attend if I'd known (unless it's one of those deals where you have to buy a £50 festival ticket to see any film).

was fun to work on someone else's film for a change.

There are things I would have approached differently if it had been my own short, but interesting to see what other people come up with.

Post by: TordelBack on 12 May, 2018, 05:34:53 PM
The chips are done brilliantly. The whole look of the eyes, skin and Rogue's gear is absolutely spot-on, after a few seconds of adjustment.  And the fight choreography, the acrobatics, the innumerable squibs, the gas-choked Nort: amazing.  This trilogy of sorts is really something to be treasured: Slaine next, please!
Title: Re: Rogue Trooper Short
Post by: Steve Green on 12 May, 2018, 05:46:32 PM
Cheers Tordel,

squibs were all digital apart from a couple of pyro sparks on the drop pod - originally I was just on board to do the eyes and muzzle flashes, but ended up doing a load more to get a consistent look.

Skin needed a bit of retouching, it was showing through after all the rough and tumble, also meant the grade is probably less blue than it might have been.

Did try pushing it all towards blue but without regular skin tones as reference you wouldn't really read it.

I was a bit uuuhhh when I first saw the costume, but got used to it pretty quickly + comic Bagman would have been a bit boxy to do much with.

All the chips were shot without any animations, and I added them pretty late in the day - seemed to work though.

Hardest bit was the explosion - had to remove all the cables from the stunt guys yanking them back, and remove treeline behind the pyro...

There'll probably be a before and after up at some point.

The Brit accents are more jarring than the swearing, but overall good show!  Loved that final shot of the battle. We bemoan Rogue as problematic as a one note character, but we should hold that not all stories are about "character" - the sense of cosmic wonderment that Lovecraft went for delibertely avoided getting bogged down in character, and I think the real shame of Rogue is not his "one noteness" )though I cn think of plenty of cures for that), but that it all too rarely gave a proper sense of the scale and "beauty" of Nu Earth as this vast chemical, alien wilderness

Post by: Steve Green on 12 May, 2018, 07:26:41 PM
Re: The british accents - I suggested using American for the GIs and something along the lines of Alan Rickman in Die Hard for the Norts - nothing as theatrical as the game.

Not sure why they went that particular route for the voices - hiring a few american V/O artists wouldn't be a big deal. I've got used to it now.

At one point they were talking about getting some better known people to cameo as the chip voices but I don't know if that was ever serious - I thought it might have been a bit distracting TBH.

Given free reign, I'd like to have got more crystal structures in there, maybe some shots with rogue reflected/refracted in there. Also pumped up the chem-fog, and done it practically on the hand to hand fight.

Would have been useful to have a VFX supervisor on set, but I think when they shot I would have just finished Stront, so I really wouldn't have wanted to walk from one slog to another.

For Slaine, I think something along the lines of Sky Chariots would be a good start - something a bit more small scale (relatively) and moody about the early stories compared to the Horned God.

Well, that was a heck of a lot of fun.

I'll be watching that again later, the action sequences look great and the animation on the chips 'talking' was something I'd not thought of that makes a lot of sense (though on a night mission they might cause a few issues :))

Superb.

Cheers Bolt!

It was interesting to work on - although when Joby first approached me saying 'I really like the way you did the eyes on Strontium Dog' I was a bit, uh here we go...

Originally I was just going to be doing the eyes and a few muzzle flashes/squibs - they had other people doing rotoscoping, matte paintings and models.

Then it really needed someone to put it all together - so I ended up doing a lot more than planned.

Helped that everything was pretty much edited so I was only doing FX on the relevant bits, which was a useful lesson.

Yeah, I think the biochips work OK - they were added late on, they'd asked about adding some animations, and I did a few tests.

It made me consider placement of them is pretty important, I guess it helps shifting Bagman to the back so you don't always have to film from the one side like you're forced to with Gunnar. Gets a bit fuzzy when the chip's obscured, but it helps locate the voices when you can't have speech bubbles.

There was a limit to how much input I could give generally - I think I pushed quite a bit to add the intro animations - they'd talked about having the drop-pods, but I thought right lets give it a bit of visual backstory.

I had a stock model from when we were going to a Rogue short before Stront, and the ruins were something else I had lying around.

I thought it would have been cool to have done some kind of Captain Scarlet style end credits, stills or shots of more Rogue-related flavour, but someone else had done them by the time I was on the team.

I did originally push the chem smog more, but was told to pull it back, think Adam wanted to see more of the background.

Most annoying thing was the make-up/body paint wearing thin - had to do a bit of digital retouching there.

Oddly the paler more 'stretched' blue makeup really works for me - it evokes cyanide or just plain oxygen starvation, and makes me think that the skin colour is a resulr of a functional genetic mod.
Title: Re: Rogue Trooper Short
Post by: Steve Green on 13 May, 2018, 08:50:55 AM
Yeah, me too.

It's a slight problem without regular skin tone to compare (apart from that one brief shot of the maskless Nort) that the average viewer think it's just weird lighting/colour grading.

Would liked to have made more of the poisonous nature of the atmosphere TBH - far too late in the day I thought it might have worked well having the explosions shatter some quartz crystals and tearing the suits.

Thought it was great. It gets in the essential background and aspects of the story without sacrificing the action. Liked the different biochip designs too.
Title: Re: Rogue Trooper Short
Post by: Bad City Blue on 14 May, 2018, 02:51:34 PM
I thought it was excellent, and didn't have a problem with the accents at all.

My only gripe was the swearing, which was out of place and didn't add anything, much as it did in Dredd 3D. I love a good old swear, but not in this.

It was like a trailer for a really cool movie.
Title: Re: Rogue Trooper Short
Post by: Steve Green on 14 May, 2018, 03:58:02 PM
Cheers,

yeah I'm in the same boat with the swearing - thought it might have been interesting to have had the biochips fritz a little to cover it, not that it would have added much, but could have been one route to take.

I kind of missed getting something in there like 'shut your synth, Gunnar', but like with Dredd the aim seemed to be to smooth over the future speak or Norts shouting Nain!

Again with Dredd it's some of the background colour I miss in these things, but you can't backseat drive a short, especially when it's all shot and edited - just give some options if they want to take them.

Well, technically it looked great but like a lot of Star Wars fan films, that just seemed like an excuse for a fight and some stunt work. Couldn't they even put the basic idea of a story in there?

Swearing and accents didn't work for me either.

(Plus, I'm no GI but even I know it was dumb of Gunner to stand on the skyline of a hill).
Title: Re: Rogue Trooper Short
Post by: Steve Green on 15 May, 2018, 06:56:07 PM
I think that's what it was - more pitched as a proof of concept than much of a story - could have benefited from something deeper, but they're a stunt team so that was their focus.

No one really complains about the Slaine trailer not having a story for example.

Helm, not Gunnar - interestingly the storyboard had him in a trench rather than running up the hill.

I guess you could stretch it as him thinking he's sneaking up from behind, and they're all focused on the drop pods landing in front of them, plus he's pissed about his squad being wiped out, so not necessarily thinking clearly.

Like I said, it was all shot and edited before they approached me.
Title: Re: Rogue Trooper Short
Post by: TordelBack on 15 May, 2018, 07:19:50 PM
It is what it is, an (extremely professional) action sequence set on Nu-Earth (as opposed to the Minty and Stront films which were fully realised short stories set in their respective worlds), and I think it works very well as that. The bio-chip concept is the main story-focus within the Quartz Zone Massacre setup, as it is in the original, and that comes across perfectly.

Amazed to learn the squibs were digital.  Maybe it's the small screen talking, but they looked mainly practical to me: good job!

I'm interested to see some folk disliked the swearing, I did too, but I thought I was in a vanishing minority so didn't bother raising it... I love creative contemporary obscenities, but not in my far-future SF.  A good "Stak!" or "Synth-out!", even a Smithian "Skev!" would have gone down better.
Title: Re: Rogue Trooper Short
Post by: Steve Green on 15 May, 2018, 07:32:33 PM
Yeah, all digital apart from a couple of sparks ricocheting off the drop pod.

Originally I was just going to be doing the eyes and muzzle flashes/squibs, so would have put more work into it, but they do the job.

I just ended up doing a metric drokkton of roto and wire removal + comping everything + adding the intro - I hope at some point to do a before and after split screen video.

I think my main takeaway from it is that I can see how the biochips might function in live action.

Visually it would have been more interesting to shoot at night with cameras that function really well in low light, like some of the Sonys, and have a few flares, smoke bombs.

See this vid shot on Brighton beach, the illuminated sea front makes for an interesting look.

https://vimeo.com/99893160 (https://vimeo.com/99893160)

Might have been a problem for stunts though, and added another layer of expense.

My pitch for when we were considering it would have suited something like that, basically a tales round the campfire about the myth of Rogue Trooper, along the lines of the Batman animated series would allow you to skip around and tell what you wanted, and then have Rogue turn up at the end to save the day.

Hah.

Well, so far we've corrupted 102,000 viewers so far (not sure what the demographic is though)

Not bad for a week - passed Strontium Dog a few days back, helps that it's on a popular channel, though hardly any comic news sites mentioned it. (Minty had loads of reports, Strontium Dog much less, and Rogue even fewer)

Also strangely, no communication from Rebellion after they were sent it, two retweets from Rogue Trooper Redux and Rebellion's twitter account, but not from 2000AD.

The Behind the scenes video was nice to see. It's hard to watch that and not think this is a film made by fans having a great time making their childhood dreams come true for a moment.

It's easy to be critical about fan films if you are holding them up against narrative storytelling but it's also easy to forget that fan films are an ode to something people love and not a cinematic calling card.

I'm just getting a little tetchy of 'why' comments these days, or suggestions of 'you should have done this' multiple comments on a facebook page on a behind the scenes pic before makeup of 'why isn't he blue' like people don't read the post. After a while you just think fuck it, and give terse replies.

And I didn't even shoot this one.

I did consider making the surface reflective but it would have been far too much extra work and they may have well shot in a car park somewhere by the time I'd cut and pasted everything.

Slate would have been visually interesting, but from a safety POV it's sharp - I sliced my hand open on a piece when I took a tumble filming Minty.

I'll have to have a word with them - they talked about one of those showing layers before and after, but I'm not going to do that, it would take more time than I can spare.

Possibly a split screen thing showing the raw footage vs the final one might be doable, but I don't have access to the youtube account and it's not my film to upload on its own.

They may just have drawn a line under it after dealing with Rebellion.

At the moment paying work is my priority.

QuoteThey may just have drawn a line under it after dealing with Rebellion.

Hmm.  Surely the problem was that they didn't deal with Rebellion, at least to begin with?

I'm no filmmaker, but making your short film based on someone else's property, entering it into a film festival and putting a trailer for it online, all without informing the IP owner of its existence or putting their copyright notice on it doesn't strike me as the most professional or clued-up way to go about things.
Title: Re: Rogue Trooper Short
Post by: Steve Green on 03 June, 2018, 02:34:04 PM
It was all shot and edited by the time I was approached, I asked them if I'd approached Rebellion about it, and they said they wanted to get it all finished, since it had been shot and edited - so they were too far along the line of putting money into it for Rebellion to say no.

Having done it 'the proper way' by jumping through hoops on two other films, we still got increased restrictions with SD that makes me not want to ever do one again, even with the IP holders 'blessing'. Whatever that means.

Minty was sort of OK, but after that there were clauses that meant that any submissions to festivals meant that Rebellion could pull permission at any point. No crew t-shirts allowed. No ads on youtube (even if proceeds went to a charity) + other stuff.

Although strangely when Rebellion hosted the Minty trailer on the 2000AD account, they did allow youtube revenue. Cheers.

After being asked to fill a gap at the 40th, and Steve coughing up for the AV hire (which was then used to screen Future Shock), the online release went past with not a tweet or mention (cheers again).

As for Rogue...

Rebellion and the Rogue Trooper account tweeted/retweeted about it - whether that was a change of heart, or whoever runs those accounts not being kept in the loop, I don't know, but it just adds to the atmosphere of not having a set of clear rules, and I really can't be arsed with it, or Rebellion any more.

I turned it off years ago and have double-checked - monetisation is definitely not activated on our channel. If you see ads, it's probably because YouTube has rightly/wrongly identified copyrighted material on a video (like the track 'Athmo3-video copilot' on the Minty trailer) and forces ads onto it whether you want it to or not. If it's inaccurately showing ads, let me know and I can challenge it.

It was all shot and edited by the time I was approached, I asked them if I'd approached Rebellion about it, and they said they wanted to get it all finished, since it had been shot and edited - so they were too far along the line of putting money into it for Rebellion to say no.

I'm no expert on these things, but basically trying to railroad an IP holder into giving permission for a fan film doesn't strike me as the best way to create a healthy relationship between the parties.

Hi Mike,

I swear blind I've seen ads on it in the past.

OK, so there were ads on it in the past?

Like I said I had no say in the matter, and by that point I didn't really care either because it didn't seem to make much difference either way, it's an already compromised relationship.

The channel is seven years old, I seem to recall turning ads off after maybe three months.

If you go about 10 secs in there's a marker on the timeline, with a pop-up ad.

That's on this one https://youtu.be/cLIfbQeSW2w yeah? Yes, an audio firm has put in a copyright claim so it automatically shows ads - we don't run them or benefit from them.

Cheers,

Yes, the audio is all bought and paid for.

Then we'd need to file a dispute. I'll email you when I'm back in the office.

Good stuff, cheers!  Had a quick re-watch there into the bargain, it really is a fun little thing, swearing aside.  The more I look at the execution of the GIs and the biochips, the more I like it.

Yeah, the swearing is something I wouldn't have gone with personally - Maybe gone with Filthy Norts or something similarly comic-like.

Think I suggested having the chip swearing fritzing on the swear words as an alternative, but didn't really have much say in the matter...

All the chip dialogue was recorded way afterwards anyway so it could quite easily have been changed.

There was talk about sticking in the drill probes somewhere and I was up for doing that, but I seem to recall they'd not really shot enough coverage to have it in there.

By the time I got to it were wasn't a natural place for it.

Rotoscoping that final shot of Rogue took a fair amount of time, especially since I was only originally supposed to be doing the eyes and some muzzle flashes.
