Title: Game Soundtracks....
Post by: ThryllSeekyr on 02 July, 2015, 03:55:44 AM
 The Witcher - Wild Hunt[/b] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLSdl-CdOBo)

It's good, but I would like to know if I was right in identifying wether most of the singing has strong Greek influence. It maybe Europe all over, and I know it's not right set in our world, but You can see this has strong analoge.

Machinarium is one of the best game soundtracks I've heard in a long time. I actually listen to it at night before going to bed quite often as it's very relaxing.

I take it you've all seen Malukah's awesome covers of game soundtracks?  This beautiful Skyrim one is what launched her to fame:

That makes two. I haven't even played the game but I came across the soundtrack on YouTube when listening to the updated Monkey Island score. Video game soundtracks are the closest thing I have to a guilty pleasure. I feel a bit self-conscious and dorky listening to this stuff but I like it and even have them on my Ipod. Maybe if I heard them for the first time today they would mean nothing but I don't ever tire of hearing these few.

Tomb Raider - Midas' Palace https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6di0-6eZOp8 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6di0-6eZOp8)
Shadow of the Beast II https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSmKPNp4Amk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSmKPNp4Amk)
Shadow of the Beast III https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRahqQ3EPL4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRahqQ3EPL4)
Castlevania - Simon's Theme https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sX3fjpkFwk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sX3fjpkFwk)
Street Fighter EX3 - Heat Wind (Dhalsim's Theme) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zo2XdfAGMBs (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zo2XdfAGMBs)
Ghouls 'n' Ghosts https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ci1oXHHanno (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ci1oXHHanno)
Turrican 2 - The Great Bath https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJ3UCmSFhoc (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJ3UCmSFhoc)

Cheesy as hell, I know. I don't even play video games any more but I keep listening their soundtracks.

Damn, I forgot how amazing the Shadow of The Beast 2 score was. The Game Over theme is amazingly haunting (and has stuck with me because I heard it a LOT as a nipper)! I've only played the first Witcher, but I remember really enjoying the end credits song and letting it play out (same thing happened with The Evil Within recently, there's a great licensed Gary Numan track in that game).

I'm possibly a bit bias (I develop, arrange and implement music in videogames for a living) but I think videogame score is every bit as important and deserves every bit of the respect that movie soundtracks receive, so am always keeping an ear on that aspect of games as I play and there are a few scores I'll listen to a great deal once the game is done.

The Mass Effect games are probably my favourites, they did an amazing job on those. Some of the collaborations with Clint Mansell on the third game still tug on my heart strings pretty hard when I hear them now, and hearing that galaxy map music is like slipping on a comfy pair of familiar slippers. The Halo games have some really memorable stuff too, although I thought the implementation of the music in those early Bungie ones could have been a lot slicker and more organic. Monkey Island is totally timeless (as are a lot of the Lucasarts games, love Fate of Atlantis too!).

More recently the Hotline Miami games sound fantastic and do a great job of not coming across as repetitive given how long you can be stuck in a level (with one quibble though - I wish they'd found loop points for the tracks instead of just letting them finish and start up again. Hearing a track end and then just start up again - with some awkward dead air in between - is one of my pet peeves). Oh and Wolfenstein: The New Order had some cracking tracks.

Currently playing through Rise of The Tomb Raider and been hugely impressed with the way their dynamic music is implemented - they're using midi to generate percussion pieces procedurally on the fly based on factors in the game and it works brilliantly I reckon. Fantastic way to change intensity during animal encounters and combat. Great game too!

She once collaborated with some guy called Gavin (Who knows.... they might have been more then just good friends...) also know as Miracle of Sound and who did much the same as she, except he seemed to be more of a gamer than she was. He wrote new stuff and put it to his own music based on the games he played.

Here are two that I like.....

Wake the White-Wolf (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0trGRJs_IU) for The Witcher Three - Wild Hunt

A Dog's Life (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfvYHUWuq9k) for Wolf Amongst Us[/b]

Among many others......

I once rented/borrowed one of the Shadow of the Beast games when I was renting a house with old school mates nearly twenty five years ago. I think it was for the Sega-Mega-Drive I thought it was different because of the art style, but never got that far into it. To much other stuff to do at the time.

I'm gonna listen to some of those.

I started playing Rise of Tomb-Raider being impressed with the vividly clear  graphics, weather effects in all, her escape to the surface after the place crash after she and some colleges of hers were caught in. I only I got so far into this at the start only to realise how superficial it all really was. Will get back into some time. Remembering comments about music and all.

I brought the cd for that as well, Skyrim and the one for Elite Dangerous. Of the latter I haven't listened to every track yet, because the software that plays music on my computer only plays one track and not the entire cd. I've probably heard more of it through playing and expect them to do more of those with all the expansions that have been promised.

Damn, forgot what else I was going to write, maybe later......

I think I'm boring, my favourite game soundtrack of all time:

Deus Ex: Human Revolution by Michael McCann
Last Of Us/Left Behind by Gustavo Santollala
Fallout 3/4 by Inon Zur (even though I hate Fallout 3 as a game).

I can listen them on repeat, mostly Santolala, mixing both soundtracks with 16 Horsepower/Wovenhand discography. Perfect mix.

Going back a bit further, some C64 soundtracks that I loved—and still love. Bear in mind, these were all composed in machine code for an 8-bit machine's SID chip.

Lightforce (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFnjA0VraDQ)

This game (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzq24zPCVVg) used a midi tune version of House of Fun care of Madness) (I wonder what they thought of it?) and it would loop over and over for as long as I could stand it and even made it to the end of this game.

BTW, I got this game as a present from my folks before I even heard of Classic-Elite and after my father had brought the C64 and it might hard to find because the name is obviously taken from the famous Jules Verne classic while having more to do with the escapades of Indiana Jones if he was in that classic story. You have to do a lot climbing and this where you need to be careful, because wrong move could send you falling to your death, either from a great height or into pit of acid. Thee bats to shoot at with six-shooter guns left lying around. They will be useless after six shots have ben fired from one and need to find more. There is very simple trick for getting more bullets from the used guns, but you will needs a bit of patience for that to work. There are other things to find the famous treasures left scattered in hard to get to locations that can only be reached after a lot of spelunking. They have these magical teleportation devices that take you back to where you find them called Thunder-Eggs and yes, they are rock with crystals inside them that really exist, but none that do that! I once brought one from a store at a museum exhibit.

I only bothered to complete the game once and was awarded the highest accolade of the Man Who Made This Game and there below that one you would get after a significant amount of play and cave bats that have ben shot down. Incase you fortunate enough to get your hands on this game and want to play this. I won't write another word about it and there is more to know!

I only have the large video cassette like case it came in and it was only on cassette tape. I may have it still, I may not and if do. I won't part with it....for now!

I remembering what I wanted to say earlier.....

Sword Coast Legends - The Fury of Dawn (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2Y31RKiwrk).

Not what  wanted exactly, but all I could find that was still playing anything f that gam soundtrack. I'm sure it's all good, but I really liked the ending song played only when you press for the credits on the main menu screen and treated to movie style roll of names and what they did in the game from bottom to top of the screen up against some usual poster of art work. I forget who is singing, expect it's the voice of a female songstress I just don't think I know of. But it's kind of nice. (Said with a slight French accent!)

Yeah, Rogue Trooper sounded great. I'll second the Deus Ex mention too, that was lovely.

Agen X on the ZX Spectrum had an amazing title soundtrack, considering the machine's limitations.
