I have truly awesome pets! :D
We lost 7 last year though but I suppose there's more chance of losing a few when you have as many as we did... Plus we'd been really lucky and had 4 years without a pet death. But I still have my 4 gorgeous babies who always manage to cheer me up after a bad day :)
Here is Dolly, the latest addition:

I also have another lovely guinea pig, a big rabbit with an even bigger personality, and a blind bunny with amazing hair.
Is anyone else on here a little animal crazy like me?

Now that I'm a member, I thought I'd try and post a picture of my two cats. After doing some picture resizing that would be simple to everybody else on this forum but was more than a little complicated to me, I should hopefully be about to post said image. Up front- ridiculously shiny on picture as if she has been laminated- is Lula (named after Laura Dern's character in Wild at Heart and aged 7) and in the back is Poppy (now sleeping some 23+ hours a day seeing as she is around 17 years).

Last Wednesday, the 15th we had to make the heartbreaking decision  to take our 11 1/2 year old Irish Setter Sonny on his last journey to the vets. Over the last month and a half, his back end had got weaker and weaker, until it reached the point where  he could no longer stand or walk unaided.

I think its great. All cats should have surnames, ideally nonsensical ones. Or a title at least. Something distinguished, Doctor or Professor for example.

I'm looking after Clive this weekend; a massive, stupid smelly, slobbery mess of a dog who breathes so loudly he's like a canine Tony Soprano. He's awesome. We can't figure out what he is, breed-wise, but he's BIG - head like a bowling ball. We get great reactions when we take him out for walks, from huge grins to open-mouthed stares and coos, sometimes even mortal terror.

So would we! We got Michael Johnson for my daughter's fourth birthday and naturally let her name him. We were expecting 'Tiddles' or 'Fluffy' or something so were amazed and confused when she came up with Michael Johnson - there's no one at her school called that and it doubtful she'd have heard of Michael Jackson. A quick google tells us he was an Olympic sprinter, but again, there's no way she would have known that.

What's cool is he always gets his full title, never anything else. He's Michael Johnson, see?

Sorry to read about your dog, Flip-r, he looks like he was a terrific fellow.

Enjoyed the tale of Michael Johnson. All of our cats have had long elaborate names, ranks, titles and alias, but none so elegant as that.

My favourite of their names was Col. Oscar Meyer Wiener the Third, aka The Gaffer (now deceased). He acquired his surname because he could be reliable summoned by singing the Oscar Meyer hotdog jingle from The Simpsons.

Here's our pup - she's a Bernese Mountain Dog called Freya. Can't walk more than a few metres down the street with her without getting stopped by strangers so they can tell me how pretty she is.

Unfortunately she has had to have knee surgery so is currently confined to the flat, with strictly no walks for 8 weeks! :'(

On the topic of surnames for cats...i always thought it was a bit condescending for people at the vets a just decide that they could come out and say "(insert pet name)(insert your surname)...which is why i decided to give them something to call out...my current mog is called  Sylvan Ivanovich Sylvan Black Daughter of Ivan Iron Claw the Great, amazing how they balk at reading that out :D

Three cats and nary a mouse in the house, they are great exterminators, unfortunately nary a bird in the yard either :(
As for sir names they are great but only one of mine has the full treatment, Susuli Bang Bang Yidihono (the vet loves it and calls the whole thing out when he visits) the other two are stick with plain old Toolie and Gerty,y forth cat was a lovely ginger named Ernie, Ernie and Gert were the best of friends unfortunatelyy housemates missus wouldn't let us desex him and of course he wondered and never came home, she still won't admit it was her fault for not letting us get him the chop but as anyone whose had a Tom should know the pull of the female is too strong for them to resist.

Two dogs Mate and Kira are no where near as much fun but keep the burglars away.

My oldest cat started Sunday with something of a limp that had me assuming she had caught a claw while climbing up onto the bed or something when I was at work. Come the afternoon she was completely avoiding using her right (front) leg and struggling to remain balanced when standing and since the night she has been struggling to get herself up off the ground. She's clearly had arthritis for a while now due to her age but now it looks like her legs are going. All calls I've made to the various vets today have only seen a couple forward the details of emergency practices, all miles away from where I live and I doubt I could afford the taxi fare with it being time and a half or whatever with it being a bank holiday on top of the veterinary bills so it's going to have to be a trip to the vet's first thing tomorrow morning and I've a feeling that today is going to be the last full day I have with her. I've been expecting this day for some time for various reasons, over a year if I'm honest, but I can't say that has made it any easier.

Cheers mate but given her age, all she ever really wants to do is sleep in her little den inside the cupboard. Even though it isn't funny, I can't help but see humour in how a few family members are rushing over now to see her in case it is their last chance. This'll be the cat who'll probably be thinking "What do you lot want? Leave me alone, I'm relaxing here" as we no doubt try and coax her out with offers of treats.

That's very rough, Charlie.  All the best with that.

We've entered the endgame with our dog, as his control of his lower body degenerates even further, so that he's now pretty much doubly incontinent and having real difficulty getting up.  He's still able to run a bit, but walking is becoming a real problem. We've been stalling on doing anything for a while now, since he still seems to be enjoying life, and only last month was pelting along the beach like a puppy, even if he paid for it later.  This weekend we tried to assess his quality of life, and weigh how many more crazy runs he has left against the frustration of being unable to get  up out of his own waste.

My wife will be completely devastated, as he works with her every day, and he's barely been away from her side for 13 years, and he's been my beloved walking and swimming companion for as long.  And that's not even thinking of the kids, who have played with him all their lives.  But putting matters off isn't helping any of us.

How you judge these things rationally I just don't know, but even trying to think about it makes me want to cry.

Bloody pets, why do we do this to ourselves?

Bloody pets, why do we do this to ourselves?

You've reminded me of my dad's response on being asked why he hasn't had any pets for years (unless you count when me and my cat were still living with him), which is you get attached to them and then they die at an age you consider to be young.
Truth be told, whenever I've fed my two for the last few months, I've found myself picking Poppy up and carrying her into the kitchen to place her down at her bowl and I've long had to help her up onto the bed etc before her leg unexpectedly worsened.  It's hard for me because she's still been purring whenever I've stroked her since yesterday but you can see something of frustration or bewilderment when she tries moving about and outright surprise when she tries standing and drops to the side. I was really hoping when the time came she would go peacefully in her sleep due to all the years I've had her (practically grown up with her) but I guess the vet could be the most peaceful I could make it for her. But yes, it's still shit though.

Bloody pets, why do we do this to ourselves?

I suppose it's for those years of companionship.

Had four cats. 3 had to be put to sleep for various reasons (all lived a decent age. One made it to 17). The fourth and last lived to be twelve and then had, I presume, a heart attack whilst asleep in the garden.

Now have a dog which we have had for just under two years. We got her as an 8 week old pup. Spends all day with me and follows me around wherever I go.

That's going to be hard when she goes. Hopefully got a fair while yet (she may even outlive me if I'm very unlucky).

Sorry to hear about your cat, Charlie. All the best for both of you  :(

Managed to get a lift to an emergency vets (PDSA; can't sing their praises enough for the pet care I received while I was unemployed and even today, after telling them I'm in employment, they told me the cost for today's visit was donation only). The vet took a good look at her and said an x ray would be the best thing to do but he wasn't up to doing it as an x ray doesn't count as emergency treatment plus my cat's advanced age means sedating her so she could have an x ray is a risk. From examining her he also believes she has an overactive thyroid, meaning tomorrow brings a trip to a private vet for the x ray that could be a risk as well as blood tests for an overactive thyroid. Seeing how he was continually telling me that every form of potential examination and treatment is a risk due to her age, I'm about to run to the shops and buy the ham slices etc she's so fond of to make sure she has a good night tonight and I'm hoping the painkilling injections she received today carry on through to the morning at least.

Sorry to hear that, pal. Your post came right after the picture of a board member's new feline and I'll be honest; I was hoping you were just being poetic in describing how the cat made you feel on seeing it. If anything, I hope this admission of my wondering if you were some great raconteur will make you feel a little better.

Thanks, LP. Took Poppy the vets this afternoon to be told her leg problem is nerve paralysis which could be just she's old and she's knocked it and it'll sort itself or she's old and it's bone cancer. They can't really look into this though until the confirmed thyroid problem is sorted (heartbeat of 200+ beats a minute which isn't right in itself). The thyroid medication she now has will either help her right out or, because she's old and her kidney's have shrank, have her body wonder why her high blood pressure is lowering and cause her health to deteriorate.
Reading over this I'm wondering if I made the right choice by going with the medication instead of the other option but with her being fine (just old) until her leg started playing up only days ago, I didn't want to do something like that when there's still a chance she can bounce right back.

One of my moggys has been pretty off lately. Though shes eaten well, as normal, she's lost a lot of weight to the point you can FEEL every single spine. Took her to the vet yesterday and her temperature is fine. In conclusion my vets think it's diabetes but we're awaiting blood sample results. Kina saddening, because I can see by the way she interacts that she wants to play but can't last long because she gets exhausted.

'Internaly screams with joy' I'm not even joking here, Spaniels are my bloody life blood. I can think of no other breed of dog, or even animal, that brings me so much joy and thats a damn beautiful little creature you have their, 8-B. Cherish her, she'll bring you much joy and ammusement. Cockers are my favouride breed but we've had one Springer in the past, max, now sadly in great doggy heaven. Currently we only have the one golden cocker, Poppy. A typical, rombunxious type, though we've yet to encourage her to swim. I'm taking her to Capernwray as i'm diving next week end (a friend will be looking after her while i'm under. The training area will be ideal for her I think, only half a meter deep.

Thanks for the kind words about Sprocket the cat. We'll hear back from the vet on friday concerning her blood sample. Wish it could be sooner but alas, thats how things are. I'm at home all day tomorrow so i'll try and moniter her behaviour, hopefully if I treat her well enough she'll pirk up.

Oh I do! I wasn't so sure at first when we got her in 2005. It was heartbreaking enough losing two previous dogs, one got hit by a motorbike in 1991 and the other of old age in 2003, and I didn't want to go through all that again. But now that we have her...  :D

Well, we heard back from the vet today. It's not diabetes, Sprockets blood glucose levels are fine. So we're taking a second, cross reference sample and a urine sample. Chances are it's one of two things. Firstly, and rather more hopefully, it's a tape worm. Several species are listed as being immune to the average worming capsule. If this is the case then it can be flushed out with either medication or, if necessary, surgery, but at least their will be a high chance of recovery afterwords. Secondly, and much less chance hopefully, it's a brain tumor. If this is the case, then their really is only ONE option.

Just took our dog for her checkup - it's been around 6 months since her TPLO surgery, and though her bad leg hasn't fully recovered (it still needs to build up some muscle, which had atrophied really badly while her previous owner neglected to get her treated  >:() she's doing well.

Can't rule out the chance that the other leg will go at some point which would be devastating, but by all accounts if she gets through the first year after surgery OK there's a much better chance it won't, so fingers crossed.

Thanks. Aside from the whole leg thing, she's pretty much perfect.

Big but not too big (70ish pounds), doesn't drool or slobber, boundlessly affectionate (just wants to cuddle up to us all day long), generally quiet and doesn't bark at noises, loves exercise and walks but not to an annoying/exhausting degree as with some dogs, generally well-behaved (no destructive habits) and can be left on her own if need be. She has an endearing puppylike quality and is very small for her breed (with oversized paws), to the point where most people just assume she is still a puppy even though she's fully grown.

The only bad habit she has picked up is barking and lunging at other dogs in the street, which can be a bit embarrassing. Trying to train it out of her, but it's a slow process. Where we live dogs have to kept on the lead almost everywhere except for designated enclosed play areas - we were taking her to these to help 'socialise' her with other dogs, but it turns out the whole thing was probably just stressing her out and making her behaviour a lot worse.... woops   :-\

Excellent dog there, Radiator.

We have a new rescue dog these past few months, a young lurcher-ish fellow, playful, affectionate and very good natured.  I am however having trouble bonding with him - I think I'm just not over our last boy yet, who we lost back in May after 13 years.  He's a great dog, but... he's not my dog.  If that makes any sense.

I've always thought the best thing to do when you lose a dog is to get another, but I think I could have used more time this time.  Still, this is bound to pass.

Here's our puss, Michael Johnson with a new toy...

Michael Johnson?
I have to know Pete, why is he called Michael Johnson?

So would we! We got Michael Johnson for my daughter's fourth birthday and naturally let her name him. We were expecting 'Tiddles' or 'Fluffy' or something so were amazed and confused when she came up with Michael Johnson - there's no one at her school called that and it doubtful she'd have heard of Michael Jackson. A quick google tells us he was an Olympic sprinter, but again, there's no way she would have known that.

What's cool is he always gets his full title, never anything else. He's Michael Johnson, see?

I know somebody called Michael Johnson.  He has a very tenuous 2000AD link.  He used to promote gigs under the name Uncle Nemesis (http://www.nemesis.to/), named after the Shriekback song, which itself featured our very own Warlock in the music video, barely visible in the background of this picture:

I am NOT a happy Doc,
Jack the dog has to undergo treatment for chronic leukaemia.
Worse... they have to remove an eye. He had already lost the use of it... but it's apparently under great pressure and causing him a great deal of pain... dare not think of the worse case scenario. he always seams so health... even now. I don't want to believe it... v v upset...
Jack recovered from the operation and apart from the missing eye he is behaving like his old happy irrepressible doggie self. In the words of the vet "he doesn't know he is ill yet."
Waiting anxiously for test results.

All the best Doctor Alt!

Not a pet, but the other day we found a snake in our fishpond.

On one hand, I'm a bit concerned about the fate of our fish, although I think this breed of snake is more partial to frogs, something we also have plenty of. Not that I'm keen on the cute little hoppers getting scarfed, but I understand their odds are good, and they're not trapped in the one place being air breathers.

On the other hand, I'm really excited we have/had a snake. It's not something one sees regularly, and it's pretty big. (I don't mean python-big. It's just tempting to envision grass snakes (I'm 90% sure that's what this is) as small. Word on line is they can reach a metre in length, but although I have my doubts about that.  I didn't see it all, as only a part of it was above the surface, but it was over half an inch thick. Closer to an inch I believe.

Amazing critter. I'm just hoping  next time we see it, it doesn't have coy carp sized bulges down its length...

Big Red (aka Cosmo).  Gone the way that all pets eventually do.  Being a stray, we think he was 17 years old, but could've been older.  Gonna miss you, mate.

Jack had to go back to the vet and stay over for 2 days. The would where his eye had been removed had started to bleed and it was causing him a great deal of pain.
Blood samples were taken and were mercy fully normal so no worries there.
He was given a course of antibiotics and we were told to try using a cold compress to help reduce the swelling.

He seems to be returning to normal now.

Been the owner of our wee rescue cat, we named her Holly, for about a year now. She had been treated awfully by her previous owner, but took to us instantly, abd suffered from atrocious anxiety. Now she's a firm part of the family and loved by everyone locally. Adopt, don't buy whenever possible.

Excellent advice - loads of animals out there, with various rescues, in need of a good home. One of the reasons our house has 11 guinea pigs at the moment...was 12 up until recently (nearly 20 overall in the last almost 4 years)

Unfortunately we lost the legend that was Frisbee, an older piggie we took in back in April following the death of his brother. His previous owner didn't want to take on a new younger pig and knew that Frisbee needed company and we jumped at the chance. As he was well over 5, we decided he was too old for the snip so we couldn't pair him up with any of our existing sows but we kept him alongside Scarlet (who lost her own male companion around the same time) and the two of them were perfect together.

When we became aware that he may be on the way out, we took down the divide between them and let them have some time together knowing that he didn't have the energy to get busy with her....and within minutes this was them (Frizz on the left)

Gonna miss the little bugger.

Guinea pigs are great. We lost one earlier this year and adopted a long-hair to keep the survivor company. Despite the extra work of taming that mane, he's settled in nicely with no squabbles. Just doesn't like running outside of the cage, so the other one does laps around him...

With only one ageing cat left from our rescue-splurge of two decades ago, we fostered a new one the other week.  Starting out as a runt with partial alopecia coming from a feral litter, Wulf has fitted right in, remorselessly bullying our lurcher (whose head alone is twice his size) and quickly buddying up with his 19-year-old deaf and partially blind foster brother. Reckon he's a keeper. Bloody cats.
