You may have seen the report today that unfortunately, after several very successful years, 2000 AD has not been chosen to participate in the Free Comic Book Day event in 2016.

We just issued the following statement:

"2000 AD is very proud of the success of our FCBD issue, which saw orders grow in huge jumps every single year, exceeding 60,000 units in 2015. We value FCBD, and the effort Diamond and the retailers put into making the day so successful, for the opportunity to support comic book stores, reach out to new audiences both within and beyond the UK, and to give something extra to readers. As such, we have proudly and routinely commissioned original content from top flight talent for our FCBD issues and increased the page count to a hefty 48 pages.

"It is therefore very disappointing to not be taking part in the 2016 event, particularly since we were so excited about including work by such huge talents as Eric Powell, Joelle Jones, and Laura and Mike Allred.

"We don't want to keep that from our readers, so we have therefore taken the decision to still bring this amazing work out in May 2016 in a new Summer Special issue, full details of which will be forthcoming.

"Meanwhile we hope readers and retailers who are disappointed not to be able to pick up a 2000 AD FCBD issue next year will give their support to us and the Summer Special. We very much hope to be back in FCBD in 2017 and will be working hard for that to happen."

that's s great shame. Did they give a reason?

So many of the FCBD issues are just a couple of pages of excerpts and loads of ads, so I reckon it's because Tharg was showing  all the others up by the quality of their offering.

Sorry spurted another thread in my excitement (have asked for it to be mopped up). The bit that I'd like to add here is.

QuoteIt is therefore very disappointing to not be taking part in the 2016 event, particularly since we were so excited about including work by such huge talents as Eric Powell, Joelle Jones, and Laura and Mike Allred.

Anyone who is hasn't just shot their comics glue at the thought of Eric Powell on Dredd (apparently) and the Allred's in 2000ad should be ashamed of themselves!

Sorry for making a mess all over the board with my previous post.

I, Cosh

Well that's a kick in the teeth.

No idea who Eric Powell is but a lovely bit of Mike Allred is something to look forward to however we get it.
We never really die.

I know we're biased, but restrictions based on size is just short-sighted. Happy to pay for what sounds like a great Summer Special.

Funny thing, Dredd quote from FCBD 2015 cover now is like prophecy.

That sounds astoundingly short sighted (if it is indeed just down to size) Is there anything we can do? Letters to our local MP, Protests in the street wearing Torquemada masks, Letters to Diamond containing poo?

Presumably the FCBD board has been infiltrated/taken over by the Dictators of Zarg. :(

Free samples to get you hooked.  After that you pay.

Also, is it just me, or is Diamond a fucking circus act of a company?  If they didn't have an illegal monopoly, they'd have gone under years ago.

A pity, but good on all at Rebellion for ploughing ahead with the Sci Fi Special. Eric Powell will be a treat, the Goon is a great comic.

Shame. No reason to go into a comic shop now.
Any chance of a Forbidden Planet signing event for the Summer Special launch?

Somewhere outside of London so the rest of the country get a look in even?

Really shitty news, I have purchased every FCBD issue since its creation and enjoyed them all without exception, in fact they were the only ones I actively sought out avoiding all the Marvel/DC rubbish!
I can only hope that the decision is reversed for the following year!

I shall enjoy buying the summer special however.  :)
