Prog / Re: Prog 2300: On the Day of Judgement...

My floppy had Dredd annual 1983 (intended as the actual inside back cover) as the cover, the back cover (Cheers, Robin) as the inside front cover, the actual cover (Robin Smith cover layouts) as the inside back cover, and the inside front cover (copyrights etc) a the back cover.

You are absolutely correct. I didn't even notice, due to being blown over by the content. Oh well. But! It says "Volume One" on the cover- which means hopefully another one!

In answer to the question above- my cover was the Dredd annual one, and yes, I'm assuming it was the right way round.

Well, for me that was the single best Prog in years- and the best Meg since that recent run with Dreadnoughts, Megatropolis and Lawless. Huge fun, gorgeous to look at, can't be faulted.

Robin Smith floppy I would definitely buy if presented between gard covers and expanded with extra text etc.

Prog up to £3.50 from next week I seem. Ho hum.

VCs. For Abnett.

Wolfie Smith- and only because an episode with the big monster scared me so much as a kid that I had to hide the comic.

Ace Trucking all the way. I can still quote large chunks of some stories, memorised when I was in short pants.

Stinkybum for me please, as I really can't get into The Red Seas.

Colin, if I didn't love you already, I'd love you for these tourneys. You're a madman, but God help us, we need more of your kind.

Devlin. Particularly for the Ales Kot iteration. And because I can't bloody stand Zombo.

I have zero- zero- memory of 'Dead Men Walking'. Nothing online tickles even a ghost of a recollection. You've actually done the impossible and made me want to drag that particular box off the shelf, find and read the thing to satisfy myself it's actually real.

That would be unfair for the purposes of this tourney though, as I didn't do that for everything else, and each decision I have made up til now has been based entirely on my gut and my memory. I'm 52, one of those is more voluminous than the other and I will leave it to you to work out which.

So, I have to go for Stalag 666 (I actually had to flick up to the top of the page there, to double check that was actually the title, which says much)- which I remember for what I now know to be the first attempts of an artist I've come to like an awful lot, and some online horror about the depths "fans" of comics can sink, long before 'Comicsgate'. But at least I do remember it. So- Stalag 666.

I was, of course, talking about the look and feel of the comic, not the content. That particular paper size and the cover design have been around since 2007 (the logo design since xmas prog #2008, Dec 2007 and the paper dimensions long before that.) That's fifteen and a half years! Time for a change- perhaps to the same dimensions as The Beano (which tends to stick out on the shelf while the prog gets hidden behind things, being much shorter), perhaps even the same paperstock?

Anyway, whatever, exciting!

For example: this new squarebound format- at the current size? Or at the smaller, US size of the new 'Best Of' title?

Am I the only one for whom the Meg's forthcoming format-change is *just about the most exciting thing to happen in ages*? So many questions! Is this the end of the floppies? Will the reprint be inside? (The unacceptability of which was surely what started the floppies in the first place?) Will we be seeing less new material, or the same, or more? Will there be a change of page size/ shape? A new logo? More, or fewer, text pages? What about price point?

I love it when the prog and Meg change their outward appearance- and I have said in the past that I think the prog especially has been stuck the way it is for far too long. Could the prog be finally getting a revamp too?

As I say, this is BEYOND THRILLING. I can't wait!

Dante.

It's totally, tonally, a different strip, and comparing the two is to me a little like asking which is the 'better' tv show- The West Wing or Yes, Prime Minister. Better in what way? They do different things.

But Dante wins it for me because it completely reinvigorated the prog at a time that was desperately needed.

Um, a bit like Stronty did with the Starlord merger. Probably best not to think about this too much.

But yes, Dante.

Maybe I'm feeling nostalgic today, but Nemesis gets my vote. Admittedly it was close, and I veered wildly one way and the other during the course of the morning. But, while I love Lawless and want to see it continue to whatever conclusion is planned with the same creative team attached... Nemesis has been a constant in my life for decades. And here I want to make it very clear that the single greatest book of Nemesis is Book Two . Those spiders, man, they make it the single most frightening comic strip ever to be published.
