Film Discussion / Re: Dredd (2012)
22 May, 2017, 08:09:58 PM
Did anyone use to read Digitiser, Teletext's video game pages in the 1990s? One of the writers Paul Rose, a big 2000 AD fan, wrote this the other day in response to a comment about a Dredd TV series spin off game. I thought it was an interesting behind-the-scenes story, so I felt like sharing it.

If it's any consolation - and here I go name-dropping again - I'm mates with Alex Garland, and I was the first person to read his Dredd scripts. The first one was pure Dredd - a pretty much word-for-word remake of the first two Judge Death stories. Incredibly faithful, but... it was a weird proposition as a movie. Also, very high-budget... but they never got the money to make it.

He sent me his first draft of the new version (in a file labelled "Peach Trees") - which was more or less what you saw on screen, barring a few changes. And ohhhhh... we debated long and hard about it. And I suspect I was so passionate that I probably offended him rather. I also tried to get him to use Brendan McCarthy as a concept artist. But again, I was far too pushy and passionate about it, and likely overstepped the boundaries.

But...! When I saw the first cut of the movie, I loved it. It's not the Dredd I would do, but it's HIS interpretation of Dredd, and it works. And uses its tiny budget in a clever way.

Probably my biggest claim to fame - not that you see it on screen - but the perps who get shot at the start of the movie were residents of "Paul Rose Block" according to their identification papers. Apparently, a shot where you see this was edited out. But! You can still glimpse "Rose Block" in the back of one shot of Mega City One (the first one in the trailer I think).

The link is here. You can find the Dredd video game comments at the top of the page and this quote at the bottom.

I've used Pamela before to record from Skype. I think there is a basic version that is free and otherwise you pay following a free trial for other versions. When I used it, it was years ago and all free so I would look into it first.

Other free programmes I've used for basic recording (guitar, mic, etc.) are Audacity, Kristal and Reaper.

Hope something works!

I put £30 worth of goodies in my Hachette basket but at the checkout realised they only deliver to the UK and Ireland and I'm elsewhere :'(.

[...]foreign language lists will be a LOT harder as most of the older releases are more difficult to find out the information about.

I can help with Italian language reprints, there aren't that many.

IIRC snow really adds to the moody atmosphere in Mandroid. I seem to remember him emerging out of the snow and fog in that gunsuit.

After a long wait, the Judge Dredd booster pack to Munchkin Apocalypse has finally arrived.

We used the free Android app and their website to clarify some rules but on the phone it's a bit small to comfortably play a full game for me. I'll have to check the Windows version but I'm still running Vista so we'll see if that works. There are various expansions for this game but as it stands the original deck is pretty massive and the whole point for me is that it's self-contained, small and cheap. Always on the lookout for games like that.

I funded the Kickstarter for Ultra Tiny Epic Kingdoms for that reason. They've yet to commence shipping on it, so I hope the extra portable size doesn't affect playability.

I bought Star Realms ages ago after all the hype about how it's an amazing 2-player game but never got a chance to play it. I'm quite slow to learn rules on my own without playing and after spending ages to set it up my wife took one look at the space battle theme said, "I don't think this will be my kind of game," so I had to put it away. I got to play it a couple of times on holiday a few weeks ago with my brother-in-law and it seemed like it would eventually be a lot of fun, what with the alliance powers and defensive outposts but we were still learning it. Don't reckon I'll get another chance to play it for a year now, though.

Instead, I can recommend a quick card game called Coloretto that is good for all the family. All you have to do is collect three sets of the same colour, which you decide at the end of the round, but any further sets of other colours you possess are deducted from your score. Played it lots this summer. I bought the German version because it was cheaper and there is no text in the game, just coloured cards. The rules are available online.

I also got out Munchkin Booty, which was still sealed, and my family took one look at it, realised what it was and said, "Oh it's that game that doesn't make any sense," before shelving it so I've still to play it.

As far as I know, the only current Italian language 2000 AD properties in print are by Magic Press and they are Slaine, Judge Dredd, Nemesis, Halo Jones and Alan Moore's Future Shocks. Otherwise there is only Zombo and the Simping Detective by Bao Publishing. The only other stuff, now out of print, is various Judge Dredd titles by Play Press.

Short answer: 99% sure your Tsar Wars is in English. Let us know when it arrives because I collect all the 2000 AD stuff I can find in Italian.

I was trying to draw my baby daughter as she slept (1 month old already!) but it came out like Max Bubba, so I decided to draw some Max Bubbas instead. These are the two sketches I liked best.

This is a long shot but my sister had a book of kids' horror stories which included one about a lad sneaking into a canteen at night and eating the food, pickled onions, which turned out to be an eye hospital rather than a canteen. Was that story in your brother's book?

You're welcome. I couldn't believe it when I saw it. I assumed all the books would be digital at that price.
