Thanks for that. To be a pain, though, what I wonder is: would a good PC today run these games in April?
#5658
Could any IT types help me?

I am impatiently awaiting the release of Doom 3 and Half-Life 2. The latest release date for both is next April.

In the meantime, while I have my trusty X-Box to see me through, I am pining for the latest Championship Manager and Pro Evolution Soccer on the PC.

What I want to know is, should I buy a whizz-bang PC now or wait until April? I know that today's super-duper graphics cards will be out of date by then, and that there will be lots of 64 bit processors and stuff, but what I want is for it to play these four games; I currently have a 500mhz PIII with an 8 meg graphics card - so there are squillions of games I want to pick up and by the time I have played them all it will be time to upgrade. Again.

So, any idea if a new machine today (say, a 3 gig P4 with a gig of memory) will run them all?

It's been suggested I buy a good processor and a lot of memory for a PC now, but an old (GeForce 5600) graphics card for ?100. Then I can buy today's state of the art in April for (say) ?200. This would be a saving of about ?400 for a super card today. Is this correct, or am I being spun a yarn?

Or should I just keep my trusty Wolves team in Champo 01-02? (9 European Cups out the last 11 can't be bad).

The XBOX cut is only in Asia, as Microsoft wants to increase its market penetration there; it hasn't really made an impact.

The fact  this is more down to a lack of appealing games for the market it beyond them, it seems.

Of all the questions we could ask, surely one must now be uttered.

What, exactly, does "Grud on a Greenie" mean?

As the man said,

"Signs was baws".

I'd in fact go as far as saying it was cheesy baws.

Help! / Re: Siku's Dredd
28 November, 2003, 03:21:10 PM
"he's right up there with the McMahon's of the world"

What, you mean Siku was good once but now only delivers shoddy, poor art with distored incoherent frames that tell no story and have a blatant disregard for the shape of the human body (right angles, McMahon!?) and perspective?

I can't draw. But I do like to read comics. And both Siku and McMahon from 95 on make it difficult for me to read the stories.

COMIC ART IS NOT ART IT IS STORY-TELLING.

If someone wants me to pay to look at their paintings then fine. But if I buy a comic I want to follow the tale. Artwork which gets in my way is not doing its job.

Can you run old arcade games on a PC? How do you do this? Do you install an emulator? Where do you get it? What spec PC do you need?

I want Commando and Phoenix!!

I need them now.

Just read the latest Meg.

Can anyone tell me who took the decision to turn a supernatural killing machine, a truly defining character from 2000as, the most original villain in Dredd, and turn it into a comedy character?

The rot set in after Necropolis.

It started in Judgement on Gotham, what with the dodgy chicken being part of Death's uniform, and has grown like an exponential fungus: from wearing a dress (Dead Reckoning) to being a goddamn boxer (the Meg).

Death now is not the same as Death then.

Why do the Vegas judges trust him? Why even speak to him? Did the ravaging of MC-1 in Necropolis pass them by?

I realise as a character he was a bit one dimensional, and sure something had to be done as the Death stories were a bit "loads of people die, Dredd saves the day." Surely, though, this is taking things too far?

Death is now a "good" character only by virtue of his dark past. If he was introduced as a new character now I am sure he would be derided as a cheap comedy one-off.

Bishop Snodgrass is a more consistnent character.

So who is to blame? Was it D.C.? And can the situation be reversed to a happy middle ground?

News / Re: Maybe
21 November, 2003, 03:05:11 PM
This is great news.

PJ Maybe is perhaps the ultimate Dredd villain.

He's not mega powerful. Dredd would have him in one go - but PJ knows it.

The fun of the PJ stories is that he is always one step ahead of Dredd without ruining it all by being a maniacal I-want-to-rule-the-world Nero Frendz type.

For this reason, I think the best story is to be told: PJ for CJ, as I've suggested before.

This could be a cracker if PJ played true to form. He could be a clever Cal (and maybe the simalarities are such the story would never be written) - so long as he did nothing overtly wrong, others would love him and Dredd would be frustrated in any effort to bring him down.

As an aside, I remember thinking that PJ was something special from the Bug story. It's one of the few tales I quote. Even now if asked "Do you know?" I, to rather confused looks ,answer "I know lot's of things. Cat's cradle!". Isn't that from some dowdy prog or other? (534?)
