At least he's consistent at something - he's been using his characters to sell crap since 1977.  Their ubiquity in unusual and unconnected promotions has always been a big part of the cultural impact of the films.  For this reason I find the 'selling out' angle a bit hard to fathom, its not like he's Bill Watterson.
