Hooray! It's the annual 2000AD cover of the year vote! This year, to avoid another 'Maths-gate' scandal, I've asked a fellow boarder to verify my shonky result before I announce (and more importantly, contact) the 'winner!'
Here's how it works - All of the years' covers are posted below, beautifully unsullied by logos and the like, and you get to vote for THREE. Your fave cover is worth 3 points, second fave is worth 2 and third is worth 1 point. If you want to look more closely at each cover, or see how much blood seat and tears have gone onto it's creation, then you can go to http://2000adcovers.blogspot.com/ (http://2000adcovers.blogspot.com/) and use the search bar at the top to find it. I'll close the voting at midnight on January 2nd 2012.
As you'll see, it's been another amazing year for covers so it's going to be as tough as ever to choose! Good luck to all our fine artdroids! Right, let's go:

Remeber, voting closes at midnight on January 2nd 2012. Get to it my pretties!
It has been a really great year for covers... found it very hard narrowing this down to three (in particular, was surprised I ended up bumping the Shakara / Vitruvian man one out of the top slots.)
1: 1752 – D'Israeli – Low Life – I had to think long and hard about making this one number 1, particularly because I'm not actually that fond of 'Low Life' as a strip. But that's not the point - as a cover, this is utterly superb on every level – concept, execution, colour. Flawless.
2: 1760 – Chris Weston – Indigo Prime. Wonderfully horrible, gloriously stomach-churning, and a very welcome reunification of the Smith brain and the Weston pen.
3: 1729 – Flesh – James Mackay – A satanic dinosaur eats a future-cowboy inside another dinosaur's guts! What other comic would put that on the cover? Beautifully painted stuff.
I've had this all worked out for a while now- and have been very interested to see if any of the later progs would come in late and change things. They didn't, so here are the results from the Small Blue Jury:
3rd place (1 point): 1729. James McKay's Gorehead cover. BIG MOODY MONSTER ALERT! Loved the strip, and loved the covers. All praise to Liam Sharp's cinematic opener, but this one really impressed me.
2nd place (2 points): 1760. Chris Weston's Indigo Prime. Insects eating people- if that's not what the prog should be about, then I'm cancelling my order and buying CLiNT.
1st place (3 points): 1738. Cliff Robinson's veg heads. A classic 2000AD image, rendered in the inimitable Robinson style- as bursting with thrillpower as it's possible to get.
BUT: With Greg's post below, are the "1, 2, 3" the places or the points? Only 1760 comes out untouched, if it's the one, not the other.
SBT
3rd Place: 1760 Chris Weston
2nd Place: 1738 Cliff Robinson
1st Place: 1763 Henry Flint
So difficult.
BTW - 1736 is Red Seas, Not Dante
Thanks for doing this Pete - awesome!
Difficult...
3rd. 1760 Chris Weston, Indigo prime- craazy cover maahnn!
2nd. 1724 Liam Sharp, Flesh-cinematic baby.
1st 1717 John Davis Hunt,Kingdom-I just like it.
Lots of close runners but these are the ones that won out in my drink addled brain.

Sorry, I didn't make my vote clear: 1,2,3 was meant to be the places - so 1752 in 1st place (3 points), 1729 in 3rd place (1 point).
It was clear Greg, it was just SBT having a daft moment!
Sorry the images are a bit fiddly to see on the forum guys, if you prefer you can go to my blog where they're a bit easier to see...
Sweet lord, there were some cracking covers this past twelve months, eh? The votes from the Stephens household are as follows...
1st Place : Prog 1760 Chris Weston Oldskool. Brilliantly inventive, superbly drawn.
2nd Place : Prog 1738 Cliff Robinson Ditto!
3rd place : Prog 1750 Greg Staples We don't see enough of the Staples droid, these days and this wrap-around cover made up for that somewhat.
1st - 1763 by the Flintster.
Gorgeous. I bloody love this man and he's been spoiling us this year. Had to keep changing my choice - the Shakara wraparound is just... gorgeous and the Zombo one (you KNOW which) is EXTRAORDINARY. But this - as Pete said (also kudos on putting them all together sans titles chap) - description-defying and iconic.
2nd -1751 by Simon Davis
Ignoring the series, which baby didn't light my fire (despite some really beautiful and consistent painting from the spellbinding veteran Burns). This is one of the most gorgeous covers in 2000ad history and proves without a shadow that SD is one of the finest artists working for the prog. Up there, even, with the paints of John Burns.
3rd - 1752 by D'Israeli D'Emon D'raughtsman
There were truly some amazing covers this year (I mulled over Trevallion's Absalom two and Liam Sharp's beautiful clutch) but I had to vote D'Israeli - as the overthinking-man's artist (his cover blog for Pete boggles the mind) this has just SO MANY LAYERS. He's one of my favourite comic artists of all time and each panel is a joy. This cover is another masterpiece.
Even harder than last year but my top 3... I think....
1st - 1727 Shakara - Henry Flint
2nd - 1762 Angel Zero - Lee Garbett
3rd - 1717 Kingdom - Jon Davis Hunt
(oh, and isnt 1730 also Jon?)
1) has to be Simon Davis 1751 Angel Zero cover for me. Just too beautiful. 2) D'Israeli Low life 1752 and number 3) is 1742 Henry Flint's Zombo cover.
Tough this year! Some amazing covers, I changed my mind about 2 and 3 several times, but that Simon Davis cover was always going to be number one for me. Made me cry a little bit and took me several days to open the prog because I couldn't look away from the cover. :)
1. 1752
2. 1750
3. 1732
1) 1727 - Henry Flint Shakara
2) 1725- Henry Flint Shakara wraparound
3) 1724- Liam Sharp Flesh wraparound
Cheers,
Lee
Another amazing year of cover art splendour, a difficult choice to make but...... In reverse order.
3rd - 1715 - Clint Langley - Shakara. A great, straightforward (severed) headshot.
2nd - 1729 - James Mackay - Flesh. It's a black Tyrannosaurus eating a cowboy, what's not to like.
1st - 1738 - Cliff Robinson - Dredd. I'll say no more......
Stew.
1. 1729 - Gorehead! by James McKay. This is what I buy comics for.
2. 1725 - Shakara wraparound! by Henry Flint. This is what I buy comics for.
3. 1724 - Flesh wraparound! by Liam Sharp. This etc.
An interesting exercise, as always - I think Liam's 1724 Flesh opener was the only one of those 3 I would have picked out as a winner at the time, but the other two have really grown on me as times passed.
This is incredibly difficult. There are at least five others that I wish I could choose.
My favourite is Prog 1755, the Cliff Robinson lawgiver. So simple.
Second, I've placed Prog 1737, because I love every mark that Sean Phillips has ever made on a page.
Third, I'm going for D'Israeli's great work for Prog 1752.
- Trout
1) 1755
2) 1751
3) 1762
1. 1730 - Dandridge - Henry Flint. Absolutly loved it, easily my favourite of the year. Although I can't help feel it looks quite Christmassy for some reason.
2. 1737 - Anderson - Sean Philips.
3. 1732 - Absalom - Tiernan Travillion.
1730 is not by Henry Flint, it's by Jon Davis-Hunt!
1st 1752 Low Life D'Israeli. A classic cover based on classic art. Stunning.
2nd 1729 Flesh James Mackay. Stood out from all the other mags on the shelf in WH Smiths, Victoria. School kids were staring at it as I read it on the way to work. May have introduced some new readers to thrill power.
3rd 1724 Flesh Liam Sharp. Liam F*ckin' Sharp Wrap around cover! Nuff said.
Brilliant year all round.
Special mention:
Simon Davis for completing the Awesome Ampney Crucis quadtych
Close to making it:
1727 Shakara by Henry Flint
1st 1760
2nd Prog 2012
3rd 1738

1730 is not by Henry Flint, it's by Jon Davis-Hunt!
Yeah I know. I've cocked up twice on my pictures, this one and Cliff's Red Seas one. I assure you these were errors in my Photosoppery and not my covers knowledge!
You're forgiven Pete :) Absolutely love Cover of the Year - you're doing a grand job.
1st Place - 3 points - 1727 - Henry Flint. - super smart design wins the day.
2nd Place - 2 points - 1729 - James MacKay - Gert big monster - its all about those evil eyes looking at YOU
3rd Place - 1 point - 1763 - Henry Flint - impossible not to smile at that Dredd. He's 70 and still better than you.
Honourable mentions to - 1762 (Angel Zero - Lee Garbett) which would have nipped 3rd but there does seem to be a perspective problem with her location / their gaze. Great use of colour tho, totally rocks as a cover. Also an honourable mention to 1720 (Necrophim - Steve Ellis) which looked great and contained more dynamism and energy than the entire 2.5 series of the story. In fact that should be the US trade cover and Tharg would shift loads of them. A seriously good cover and I hope we'll see more of that Ellis chap. Finally the Frazer Dante cover, the Robinson 'Brainbloom' Dredd cover and the first Absalom cover are all totally lush. Damm it a top 3 isn't enough!
Another fine crop of covers and another bloody difficult choice:
#1: 1752 - D'Israeli, Dirty Frank. Always a good combination for a vote from me and the referencing and ideas crammed in there, as well as the finished work has to be my #1.
#2: 1724 - Liam Sharp, Flesh. I knew this was a contender as soon as I saw it and it stayed in my top three all year.
#3: 1760 - Chris Weston, Indigo Prime. Brought a nostalgic tear to my eye (more Chris Weston on IP please if only a one-off prequel to the next IP trade to ease new readers into Dead Eyes?) and I love the way he channeled a serious Old School vibe too.
I agree with Tweak72, an honourable mention should go to the Daivs droid as the set of those Ampney Crucis covers is brilliant (pity it makes picking one difficult).
- 1752 (I have this up on my wall at work)
- 1751
- 1734
Very, very tough - had to whittle down a shortlist of 8 and I could easily swap out these for another three.
I'd have to go for:
3rd place: 1724 - Flesh
2nd place: 1734 - Anderson
1st place: 1750 - Dredd
As its been for the last few years incredibly difficult, but I'm just going to go for it otherwise I'd be dilly dallying for an age. So here we go.
1. 1725: Just the crazy summation of the series as a whole in one awe inspiring cover.
2. 1734: Such a striking image
3. 1724: DINOSAURS!!!!
If we can have an HM as in the art comp I'll go with 1720 it fair pops off the page.
Right I'll throw my hat in. It's really hard as I've contacted each of these artists over the year and all but two have been kind enough to send me some absolutely mind blowing art. Once again I'd like to thank them all. Here we go then:
1 - 1763 Henry Flint's Burning Dredd (a stunning year for Henry for covers.)
2 - 1751 I'm with Mrs Tharg in choosing SB Davis' beautiful Angel Zero cover. The classiest cover I've ever seen.
3 - 1750 Speaking of class, Greg Staples' brilliant wraparound for this prog was wonderful. I loved it 'cos it told a little story and just looked as cool as owt...
So that's my votes. I've got to say though, I could have easily put any D'Isreali cover in there, any of Cliff Robinson's Dredds, any more of Henry Flint's, John Davis Hunt's, Liam Sharp's, Garry Brown's Anderson, THAT Weston cover and loads of Clint Langleys too. We are SO lucky!
1. 1727 - Shakara - Henry Flint
2. 1735 - Dante - Simon Frasier
3. 1762 - Angel Zero - Lee Garbett
Many many others that were great
1st 1755 - Cliff Robinson
2nd 1720 - Steve Ellis
3rd 1722 - Simon Davis

Still not sure why they changed the 2000AD logo half way through the year. I really liked the Prog Number at the top of the comic under the logo instead of way down near the bar-code.
1- 1746 - Zombo
2- 1729 - Flesh
3- 1760 - Indigo Prime
There are much better bits of art, in my view: Simon Davies on 1751 and Robinson on 1755 in particular. But these three are what I like in a cover. They'd make me want to pick up the comic, thinking "what the hell is going on in this?" That, for sure, is a cover's job.
There's been some real stunners this year, so it was an amazingly hard decision-but here goes:
1st.Prog 1738-Cliff Robinson is a God!
2nd.Prog 1750-Brilliant composition from Greg Staples.
3rd.Prog 1760-I never get tired at looking at Chris Weston's stuff!
Good cover year for me too. BPP's list includes Prog 2011 which has a 2010 cover date so Pete is amazingly correct in including Prog 2012 as it falls within the 2011 range. That is of course the Letters Beast judgement, which is of course the gold standard of all things stats based.
1) 1738 Cliff Robinson - Nice bit of head there.
2) 1750 Greg Staples - Wraparound gorgeousness
3) 1760 D'Israeli - Lovely cover for one of the year's best series.
HM - Chris Weston - only the lack of a big hitter character cost it a podium spot.
Weird dweezil2's match mine in the 1&2 spot - bit of synchronicity as we typed together!
heh, i always include the Prog 20XX as the start of a new year because (1) its on sale during the new year & (2) the issue is the start of the new batch of stories for the year.
One of them innit. No wrongs, No rights. Don't force me into a stat-off baby...
1) 1725. The unashamed joy of a massive armada of freaky alien weidoes being rammed with a planet
2) 1752. D'Israeli and his understated Genius. No big explosions or owt, just a bloody lovely illustration.
3) 1746. Henry Flint has done so many amazing covers this year. He really knows how to grab your attention.
3rd - 2012
2nd - 1759
1st - 1750
Sweet Jeebus! There are so many great covers...it's near impossible to pick!
THIS IS HARD!!!!!!!!!!!!
ok
1. 1738 cliff robinson (the old boys network of Squaxx amongst us wipe a tear from our eye for this cover)
2. 1750 Gregg staples
3. 1760 D'Israeli
That was almost a painful experience. how can we be asked to choose. :'( so much pleasure,so much pure joy.
As everyone has already said there have been some amazing covers this year. So a real tough choice but these are my top 3
No 1: 1752 - D'Israeli
No 2: 1727 - Henry Flint
No 3: 1745 - Neil Roberts
Plus I have to give honorable mentions to these 3 which were so close that if I don't hit post now I will probably change my mind again ;)
1746 - Henry Flint
1725 - Henry Flint
1724 - Liam Sharp
1) 1750 - Staples
2) 1752 - D'Israeli
3) 1725 - Flint
Really tough choices and I'll probably change my mind again so I'll press submit quick
1. 1727- Shakara
2. 1742- Zombo
3. 1724- Flesh
Final answer.
1st 1746
2nd 1763
3rd 1750

Bah - I meant 1761. Excuse for Pete to feck it up!
1st (3 points) - Prog 1729, Flash, James Mackay
2nd (2 points) - Prog 1734, Anderson, Garry Brown
3rd (1 point) - Prog 1748, Sinister Dexter, Tiernen Trevallion
If it was just for the art, I think Henry Flint could have knocked one or two of these out, but as covers these are all nice and striking. If I'd never heard of 2000AD and saw all this years issues laid out, these three would probably be the ones I'd pick up first.
so hard 1.1763 henry flint 2.1759 clint langley 3.1750 greg staples!
1st place (3 points): Prog 1746 - Henry Flint, Zombo (I'll still remember this cover in 40 yrs time!)
2nd place (2 points): Prog 1741 - Garry Brown, Dredd (I love the colours and idiosyncratic inking)
3rd place (1 point): Prog 1745 - Neil Roberts, Savage (Initially I wasn't that impressed by this cover, but it grew on me and won the final point I had to offer)
----------------------------------------------------
Honorable Mention: Prog 1732 - Tiernen Travallion (This was the cover that got me back into reading 2000AD regularly after 20yrs of thrillsucker infestation)
This is really tricky. So many great, eye-catching covers. At a push;
3rd place - 1752 - Low Life, D'Israeli
2nd place - 1738 - Dredd, Cliff Robinson
1st place - 1763 - Dredd, Henry Flint
There. Post before I change my mind...
first fav = 1750
second fav = 1740
third fav = 1729
pwog
Who would have guessed you could have so much fun agonising over your favourite covers?
First: 1734, Garry Brown, Anderson. Stunningly good.
Second: 1752, Low Life, D'israeli.
Third: 1762, Angel Zero, Lee Garbett
And if I could have a fourth place it'd be Henry Flint's 1763 Dredd leaping right at you out of the flames.
A very good year for covers! :D
When I saw this thread I thought 'Well D'Israeli's Dirty Frank just has to be in my top three', but then I saw the rest and was just reminded of how great some of them were.
So in reverse order;
1751
1734
1724 - that Flesh wraparound is just gorgeous. My favourite of the year
1st - 1750, Greg Staples Dredd
2nd - 1757, Neil Robertson Angel Zero
3rd - 1724, Liam Sharp Flesh
BUMP! I'm bumping this as voting closes at Midnight on 2nd January.
Blimey, there's everything to play for as I've done a preliminary count of boarder votes + plus votes on my blog + the ecbt 2000AD blog votes (go on, get your maths jokes out of the way!) At the minute there's a clear winner, TWO covers are sharing second place and two are sharing fifth place. There's only a few points in it between the 3rd, 4th and 5th places too so late votes will change everything!
If you haven't already voted, now is your chance to make a difference!
#1. 1752 - D'Israeli
#2. 1760 - Chris Weston
#3. 1727 - Henry Flint
And the votes from the Logan Block:
In Third Place:

In First Place:

Maths isn't the issue. Since when did this poll include votes from other websites? That's a surprise and I can find no mention of it here.
Don't forget the votes from the MMILF website that Roger posted the list on
Is this an issue?
It wasn't my intention to include my blog or ECBT2000AD initially, but people who aren't members here have chosen to take the time to vote on those two sites. I don't think it does any harm to include them, both sites are dedicated to 2000AD after all.
You're in trouble now King Trout! A special alarm goes off in the Wells house when his poll is brought into question and you have woken the BEAST of 194 DECIBELS, run for your life
I voted for Henry Flint on the Bella 'X FACTOR: WHO SHOULD WIN' poll. Can this be included?
(obvious answer - do two counts - one for just here, one for every blooming tyke who was gracious enough to answer. Actually would be interesting to see if there were any significant differences even among the 'bubbling under' covers.

I suppose it doesn't matter now.
The BEAST claims another victim :o
I'll say:
3rd place: #1749, Garry Brown's Dredd. A killer variation on a very familiar tune.
2nd place: #1727, Henry Flint's Shakara. Elegant and mysterious.
1st place: #1752, D'Israeli's Low Life. Clever, funny, and a real stylistic departure.
So can you vote on multiple sites with multiple user names so that the truly awfull Prog 1737 can win
(http://www.2000ad.org/covers/2000ad/mediumres/1737.jpg)
Could we have two sets of results, one 'Fan's Choice' for all sources, and one 'World Series' for votes from this board only? Think of the mathematical permutations - reap the whirlwind, Wells!
How about a result for each individual site and then an over all result then as an individual you can decide which one is valid.
The amalgam of all sites whilst being the true result could be open for the debate of multiple votes from one source.
V
Now, now, you'll make Pete cry and no one wants that (OK Roger, but no one else). ;)

It is best 2000AD cover of the year, not the 2000AD forum's favourite so, as long as there aren't a lot of other places doing the vote it isn't a problem, as long as people only vote in one place to make life easier (you know who I'm looking at). Which reminds me I need to clarify something....
OK we have two people voting here and on ECBT2000AD.* Ratty Cole's is fine but Orlok has given 2 different sets of votes:

2. 1742- Zombo

I am assuming he means 1724 and, anyway, will be taking the forum vote as the definitive one.
* Its like people are going out of there way to help mess up Pete's sums, even if he needs no help on that front ;)
Despite all the goodness, surprising how many weak covers there are, bearing in mind its selling the product.
3rd - 1719 Simon Davis. Who says you need a big gun to look hard.
2nd - 1762 Lee Garbett. Love this cover, love the red background, love the movement, love the contrasts, if only the strip had been this good.
1st - 1752 D'Israeli. What can you say? Sit back and bask in the brilliance.
Vote early and vote often is my motto, but I've failed on both counts.
My top two have been jousting with each other since the day they slipped out of Tharg's silky envelopes. To put one above the other is wilful caprice.
Third place could've gone to several others, but ultimately this is the one that stuck in the mind.
3rd. Prog
1752 - D'Israeli. Another fantastically stylish cover from the mild-mannered maestro.
2nd. Prog
1727 - Henry Flint. A really fun cover with a wonderful level of detail.
1st. Prog
1734 - Garry Brown. So simple yet so striking. Proof you don't need an action packed cover to stand out from the crowd.
HMs. Chris Weston's 1760 and James Mckay's 1729 could both easily have made the list and Tiernan Trevallion's 1732 was another cracking image but just a little too static to make a great cover.

It is best 2000AD cover of the year, not the 2000AD forum's favourite....
Well, I don't like to be a pedant, but the title of the thread is "2011 cover of the year" so I felt the Megs were unfairly written out of history like an unlucky Stalinist functionary. ;)
I know they never win, but both Tiernan T's Christmas cover and Colin Macneil's big burny badge on 305 would've been contenders for me.
After much deliberation, cogitation etc, I'll go for:
In 3rd place - 1732 - Tiernan Trevaillon/Absalom
In 2nd place - 1763 - Henry Flint/Dredd
In 1st place - 1752 - D'Israeli/Dirty Frank
1. 1763. Dredd by Henry Flint.
2. 1752. Lowlife by D'Israeli.
3. 1727. Shakara by Henry Flint.
Happy New Year Squaxx!
Tough year, so many good covers. Surprised to find no Dredds , even in my longlist. But in reverse order...
3rd - 1762 ANGEL ZERO
2nd - 1739 ABSALOM
1sr - 1746 ZOMBO
Aaaaand, voting has closed!
I'll let you know the winners tomorrow!
Let the maths gags begin!
By tomorrow do you mean Wednesday or did you really mean later today. I only ask as I know this type of thing confuses you ;)

It should be later today - the sums have been done, the numbers doublechecked by a Swiss mathematician and the winners decided. He only said that tomorrow to instil a bit of drama to the proceedings. Possibly.
I demand a recount!
I'll put this here as the results thread should be left for celebrating the work involved.
This list from US blog Robot 6 (part of CBR) makes for an interesting comparison.

Now don't get me wrong there are some bloomin' lovely covers there, but I do think its fair to say that this years 2000ad covers stand up very well against these top 50 from the major (and majorish) US publishers?
Hope my natural bias isn't taking that too far?
It always "amuses" me to see such things, when it should really be called "the best covers from the top 5 or 6 American comic book publishers in 2011." ;)
Nice to see Jock get a mention and Francesco Francavilla's Abe Sapien cover is fantastic (remember Tharg, he is a fan of Judge Dredd....).
