Post by: COMMANDO FORCES on 05 December, 2012, 09:10:01 PM
First off, here's the link LSCC 2013 (http://www.londonsupercomicconvention.com/)

Just a couple of names that may entice some of you to pop along

John Wagner - Carlos Ezquerra - Alan Grant - Brian Bolland - Glenn Fabry - etc...

If you want to see who else is lined up, then follow the link ;)

Is anyone else having trouble with the site? I can't see the guest page because the pictues load way to pick then appear to zoom in making browsing it impossible.

Or is it just my sucky PC? Can't see John Wagner, Carlos Ezquerra, Alan Grant or Glenn Fabry because of it  :(

Wow that is a pretty stella line-up. Klaus Janson, I'd bloody love to shake that man's hand. A bloody genius and one of the greats in my mind.

It was OK last time - overshadowed a bit by Stan Lee and everything shunted into a corner of the hall to make room for queues. Hopefully no Stan will give room for everyone else.

Not a huge fan of Excel for that sort of thing - there's the space, but it's a bit soulless and not great for panels.

One assumes Carlos is sketching? If so, I can get the third in my holy trinity of Batman, Superman and Dredd on my Nintendo DSs.

Time to start being extra helpful around the house.

Just this moment had confirmation that John Wagner will be having Mega City One Judge protection over the weekend!

So get yourselves along to this convention and see some of the 2000AD greats, if the Judges will let you ;)

Dang. Can't make it now.

Whether this is to do with finances or the prospect of Judge Burdis being present all weekend, I shall leave you to decide. ; o)

Richmond, get your finger out and get Carlos along to Hi-Ex.

Have to say thats a pretty astonishing line-up. The best I've seen since the old UKCAC days (though I was in the comics wilderness for some time). Alas no chance I can make it as too close to my wife's 40th and money is therefore diverted elsewhere... though if someone fancies getting me something signed my Klaus Janson they'd have a friend for life!

This looks like such a fun weekend, well jell of all you southerners, too far from home for me.  Not many people I particularly fancy meeting but oh Bill Sexy Sienkiewicz and Carlos Charisma Ezquerra wowow that's gotta top a very short list as they are lovely!  And of course a million tons of love for John Wagner and Alan Grant who are both an absolute pleasure to meet... and not just because Scottish people are always The Best hehe but yeah its true they are.  A lot of talent kicking about with Bolland and Fabry too, I hope you guys get lots of good photos for us to gander at!! x

Hang on..!  Thirty nicker all in, weekend pass, early entry... and all in the loathso charming but close-by city of London?  Bugger that Squits gig in Southampton.  I'm crawling out of the WhitCave for this one.

Now, to sell another one of the Evil Nieces' kidneys and get this sorted.  Does anybody know a good organlegger?  Last one was right sloppy and took part of the brain that handles hearing, at least whenever I say, "No, don't paint/climb/ritualistically stab your friends on that!"

Any ideas as to a quicker way to the ExCel ? I usually get off at Paddington from the South West , but it's showing as a hour long tube from there to get to it. Would it be a lot quicker to get a taxi there? I'm only there for the day , so want to have as much time as possible rather than spend maybe more than an hour tubing.
Title: Re: London Super Comic Con 23/24th Feb 2013

I doubt it would make much difference, time-wise I'm afraid.

Just goes to show how much I know
I thought a taxi would take about 15mins..
So I reckon if there's no difference time wise , it'd be best by taxi just to avoid the tube , at least going there. Coming back it won't be such a rush.

Can't remember offhand how much he was charging at Kapow, £100? £125?

So they're not cheap, but he did take his time on them, so they were more like his finished art than sketches.

Brian Bolland doesn't work through a sketch list in order.

I got added as something like number 20 early afternoon and got lucky.

I would say that it was a fantastic experience chatting to him for over an hour. The sketch was fine for £100 despite the previous criticisms of the price in this forum.

I'll be at LSCC to finally meet John & Carlos
Title: Re: London Super Comic Con 23/24th Feb 2013
Post by: Steven Sterlacchini on 31 January, 2013, 07:40:09 PM
I think it was more the £100 when I thinking about it, but it was still fine considering who it was by.
Title: Re: London Super Comic Con 23/24th Feb 2013
Post by: matty_ae on 31 January, 2013, 07:59:21 PM
Yes I think you're correct

£100 was first year of Kapow (2011?)
By first LSCC (2012) it was £150

I do think Brian genuinely still has a place in his heart for Dredd. He still wants to do a League of Fatties story (randomly) and he still ends of sketching 6 generic joker faces every day of every con!

Berserker Comics are gona be at LSCC again this year with a snazzy new Fabry sketch book and a stack of orginal comic art (some 2000ad stuff in there if i remember correctly) and i think we are doing some promo stuff where you can win some orginal art again this year.

some good after show pubness at this last year too :)

I know most on here are lazy buggers, so here is some of the info that will be of interest to you!

Saturday Panels

12.00 – 12.45          CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF MARVEL'S GREATEST CHARACTERS

2013 commemorates 50 years of Marvel's greatest characters: Amazing Spider-Man, The Avengers, X-Men, Iron Man (with his introduction in Tales of Suspense #39) and Nick Fury (with his first appearance in Sgt Fury #1). Our panellists reveal the behind the scenes evolution of the characters.

13.00 – 13.45          DAREDEVIL THROUGH THE AGES

David Mack, Bill Sienkiewicz and Klaus Janson discuss the Man without Fear's evolution from "sightless swashbuckler" to their collaboration with Brian Michael Bendis on "Daredevil: End of Days".

14.00 – 15.00          DREDD and beyond: the whole wide world of 2000AD

A chance to see Brian Bolland, Ian Edginton, Carlos Ezquerra, Alan Grant and John Wagner discussing all things 2000AD.

16.15 – 17.15          20 YEARS OF TOP COW

Celebrate 20 years of Top Cow with writers, Ron Marz (Artifacts, Witchblade), David Hine (The Darkness) and Matt Hawkins (Think Tank, Aphrodite IX), who will reveal the remainder of Top Cow's 2013 plans. For aspiring writers, Top Cow's now annual Talent Hunt is quite possibly the only opportunity for unknown writers to get published at an established publisher today. Find out about the 2013 plans. All attendees will receive a special limited edition Aphrodite, Darkness and Witchblade mini-lithograph that all three writers will sign for FREE!

Sunday Panels

11.30 – 12.15          SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN

Doc Ock replacing Peter Parker as Spider-Man in Amazing Spider-Man #700 definitely raised the interest levels and the first issue of Superior Spider-Man continues the debate to a new level.  With Dan Slott attending we couldn't resist the opportunity to discuss the event and the reaction of comic readers everywhere.

12.30 – 13.30          COMIC GEEK SPEAK PRESENTS:  CREATORS VS FANS

Members of the audience will have their chance to compete against our panel of creators.

13.45 – 14.45          ZENESCOPE:  GRIMM FAIRY TALES ANIMATED

Zenescope Art Director, Anthony Spay, hosts a panel to show off the pilot episode of Grimm Fairy Tales Animated. Anthony will be on hand to share some details about the pilot and talk to the fans of the comics about what to expect next from Zenescope.

15.00 – 15.45          BATMAN THROUGH THE AGES

In Neal Adams, Brian Bolland, Gary Frank, and David Finch we are lucky to have 3 creators who can discuss Batman's journey from the 1960s to present day.  Don't miss this unique opportunity to ask them about the Dark Knight's evolution.

16.00 – 16.45          JUDGE MINTY SCREENING

With the attendance at the show of Judge Dread creators Carlos Ezquerra and John Wagner, a screening of the not for profit fan film, Judge Minty, couldn't be more opportune.

Portfolio Reviews

Portfolio reviews take place at the Portfolio Review Booth

Saturday:

13.30 – 14.30          MARKOSIA
15.00 – 16.00          ZENESCOPE
16.30 – 17.30          TITAN COMICS

Sunday:

12.15 – 13.15          2000AD
15.00 – 16.00          TOP COW

On seeing there was a 2000 AD panel on Saturday I thought I might go to that one, and skipped over Sunday.

Then I read your comment. Thought "Is he being sarcastic?" then went back... and saw Minty.

Maybe Sunday after all.

If I go. I haven't quite decided yet.

I am reliably informed that Chief Judge Hershey will be making an appearance on the Sunday!
A mate at work has a mate (I know) who loves Dredd and his missus will be donning the robes of office (comic version). He's sent me two pics via facebook and the uniform is not bad, it's the version with the massive seal of office on her chest!
I'll be looking forward to grabbing a few pics on the day with her.

Another awesome day for the 2000 AD forum members and resident Judges.
Close protection for Bolland as he signed and great fun at the 2000 AD panel, especially when the Judges had to evict Pete Wells under orders from John Wagner.
We are now eating in some Chinese restaurant before we drink more!
Many pictures have been taken and you will see mine Sunday evening!

I had a fantastic time yesterday, I stared lovingly at Glenn Fabry until I thought I might be freaking him out as I was struck dumb in his presence. I had a great chat with Simon Furman, was stunned by how young Bill Sienkiewicz was - was he a kid when he started or what? There were lots of other lovely people on the stalls.

I spent neither too much or too little.

I loved the panel very much. I took a few photos of that which I will be putting up soon - however I need your help. Being shit with names I have forgotten who was on the end sat next to Ian Edginton. Can you help?

Pete Wells got what he deserved. :)

There were only 50 available , and I wanted one so badly I queued up at the very front of his signing for an hour to get one. Obviously , you'd think that they'd sell out so quick and that it'd be one per customer. Turns out that you could buy two , and he still had well over half left at the end of Saturday. If he has any left , maybe write to him via his blog for one? They were £20 btw.

Cutest (and slightly scary) moment was when a 3-year old kid dressed as Batman saw what everyone else was doing and toddled over to be 'beaten up' by the Judges - dropping down onto his knees and putting his hands behind his head unprompted.

Sadly no pic.

Yeah, that was just so cute and funny, wasn't it? There was a large semi-circle of onlookers, who simultaneously went 'Aww!' and laughed riotously. Brilliant moment!

Dave Court and I kept bumping into him and his parents for the rest if the day, and we always gave him a salute or waved at him. He seemed well chuffed about that.

I had a great time at LSCC. I could only make the Sunday, which meant I missed all the fun on Saturday, but it looks like a lot of it has been captured in these cool photos.

Quite a relaxing first part for me, I actual got to chat to some people and even managed to have a good natter with the guys at the 2000AD stand. Of course I didn't come away empty handed - damn those  Betelgeusian mind tricks! :)

It's got a tad more stressful toward the end of the day, but everything went fine.  ;)

Ah, weekend conventions - It's always odd to return to reality after these things and not to ask complete strangers to drop to their knees when they approach me.  (That sentence sounded less filthy in my head).

Great to see a lot of love for 2000ad though - The Judges went down really well, probably the best con I've done for being recognised and stopped for photographs so many times.  And the more Judges at an event, the better!

Had an awesome time on Sunday. The judges were amazing. I went along with my 9 year old son Joe. We asked for a photo and we're told. "Yes, now get down on your knees and put your hands behind your head!". We dropped to the floor immediately for fear of a long stint in the cubes. My son hates having his picture taken but for this one he didn't have much choice. We had a blast. The 2000AD presence at the con was perfect. I got to chat with John Wagner for ten minutes about story structure and process. It was a real moment. The booth as always was a source of fun and spending. Joe seemed to use his super power puppy dog eyes to get a ton of stuff for free on Sunday and he now teases me with his "30 years or Thrill Power" pin badge which he now owns and I don't. I must learn to flirt more with the guys at the booth. Maybe not.

10 thoughts about LSCC

1. bill sienkevitch (mis-spelt I know) can charge £650 for a sketch and people will pay
2. john wagner and alan grant are two of the most gracious, funny people to spend time with and hugely lovely
3. cosplayer are great when it's clear they are fans of the material (our lot! Judges, Durham, Chopper)
4. Judge minty is an amazing achievement even in a very light room. The shot with the H Wagon lifting in the background as Dredd inspects a shot Minty and the Lawmaster part were up there with anything in the 'real' film
5. Chris Weston is the hardest working man in the business
6. Molcher is brilliant at chairing a panel especially when...
7. Alan Grant only (hilariously) seems to see misery in Judge Anderson's future
8. This was the best organised con I've ever been to.
9. Ben Wilsher is almost the funniest man from 2000ad except
10. Frazer Irving pips him at the post with randomness

Thanks to Rebellion for doing it again.

1. bill sienkevitch (mis-spelt I know) can charge £650 for a sketch and people will pay
2. john wagner and alan grant are two of the most gracious, funny people to spend time with and hugely lovely

1. I didn't look at them but I was told Neal Adams sketches had similar prices too and I saw he was charging £20 to have a photo taken with him!

2. Yup, they certainly are.

4. It was a real shame the lights were on for Minty. It was hard to see what was going on in the darker scenes. Glad you still enjoyed it.

Yup, conventions are not great venues for this - they did at least turn the lights off for the Dredd preview clip at Olympia, but they really need proper screening rooms. Providing mics for all the panel members wouldn't hurt either.

There was a really good Empire event at the O2 a while back which utilised the cinemas - it got cancelled last year so maybe it's just not viable.

Personally I'd prefer fewer larger events, but I guess it's more lucrative for the organisers this way.

Are you the Steve Green who did all the CGI on Minty (my second question - sorry for making the Judge come over twice)

1. I thought it was amazing CGI - really nice feel - and as I've said those two particular shots/sequences were amazing

2. What did you do it in? After effects?

3. Is it something you do professionally anyway, if so can you send me a link?

Thanks for the links Judge Jack and Tombo. It seems as if this year may be as crazy as last year.

What helps is the bigger Judge presence and everyone playing their roles so that the public have a good time. Obviously Judge Court is a veteran but Judge Pal soon turned from PR role into full on street mode, with his enthusiastic beatings.

Also must thank the Chief Judge, Devlin, Durham and Chopper for really expanding the awareness of 2000 AD at the con. I knew Hershey was coming but the rest of the group was a secret and in about two hours time I shall have words with my mate for keeping the other three a secret

I hope this is only the beginning of a massive 2000 AD presence at all future conventions

I was volunteering as staff for the con and had an absolutely fantastic weekend.

The few pictures I have are on instagram, and as I can't work out how to link to those images, here's my instagram account: http://www.instagram.com/grthink (http://www.instagram.com/grthink)

Managed to get a picture of Burdis punching me in the face (would have been better but the guy using my phone had 1. very shaky hands 2. couldn't work the button, so the picture I got was of me looking at the camera trying to work out what was taking so long)

Met one of my personal heroes Chris Weston, got to chat to him while he did me a sketch of Winwood, and he signed my Fleetway Edition of Killing Time (YES)

Chatted to David Hine about Bulletproof Coffin for about 10mins which was also incredible.

Sorted out entrance for Simon Harris when he didn't get his pass sorted, and then saw him a few times around the show.

Just generally, as a bit of a fanboy, it was immense to meet so many people I admire, and 99% of people were great to talk to -- there were a couple of bellends, but that was usually due to selfishness driven from passion, so is kind of forgivable.

And it's really gratifying to see people say it was well run -- even though I wasn't involved as staff until Friday afternoon, that everyone had a good time (and I've seen no complaints about staff yet, either) is just superb.

I was trying to keep count, but it was impossible.  If we go by just Steve Greens pics we're looking at about 20 arrests, but that's just the tip of the iceberg.  We were stopped for pics every 10 or so paces we walked, and at one point we had a huge semi-circle of folk all lining up for some daystick action!!!

I'd say over the two days of the convention we were easily looking over the 100+ mark.  John and David, would you agree?

Yeah, the rare occasions I got anywhere near a drink I emptied entire bottles in just a couple of gulps.  It was so hot and sweaty I rarely needed a piss break, as my my body was using every ounce of water given it!

There was a quite a funny moment when I was in a toilet cubicle on the Saturday, had just gotten everything zipped up, and someone tried the cubicle door.  In full kit, helmet back on, I pulled the door open sharply and said 'All yours Citizen.'  The look on the poor bugger's face was priceless!

Declaring to the 'Trade Your Way to the USA' camera that the kid's cookie was more delicious than Umpty Candy (I hope they leave that bit in - it cost me three bloody quid!!)

Alan Grant trying his best to make me laugh, and succeeding – "Judges shouldnae smile - stop smilin'! Ah see ye, yer grinnin'!"

Scaring someone when coming out of a toilet cubicle in full uniform

Just how bloody inclusive everything was – people of all creeds, colours, shapes and sizes were there, and having a blast.  Comics are truly awesome!

Lycra clad ladies EVERYWHERE!!

Sorry for the image heavy post, but it was the best way to describe it all really!

So much more!  Considering this was my first ever convention, it really set the bar high!

Good stuff but would benefit from not zipping past the judges so quick.

I know there is an excellent one when the 2000AD characters walk in single file towards the camera and then move into extended line and do a pose at the end. I have no idea when this one comes out. Pete Wells took a few pics as it happened and here are a couple from it.

Just got tagged in another vid and it includes all the 2000AD Justice crew with Simon Davis preparing for a photo, the chin suddenly appears

It's another brilliant vid that moves from colour to black and white with a track that really matches the mood of the behind the scenes cos-play stuff. Why not have a look, it's quite short!
