Film & TV / Re: Rogue Trooper News…!

Quote from: Fortnight on 01 February, 2024, 03:17:26 PMI have no skin in the Rogue Trooper game as I've not read any, but I used to be in the camp of "one-off films are better than TV or film series" but my views have changed over the last decade or so.

A standalone film never seems to be sufficient to tell a complex or detailed story without feeling rushed, incomplete, or just badly edited.

I'd sort of agree, but as much as we all love 2000AD, it isn't Marvel or DC and we have to assume there won't be any direct follow-up film unless we're all very lucky.

Quote from: JayzusB.Christ on 25 January, 2024, 01:10:43 PMReally enjoyed that - great to have you back, lads!

Alex is right about the Inspector Morse influence - I seem to remember Daves Bishop and Stone being fairly explicit about that at the time.

Which made it a bit weird to see Charlie Gillespie's muscle-bound, shirtless Armitage fighting monsters like He-Man battling against Skeletor's forces, instead of morosely pondering murder cases over a pint.  I did like Charlie's naked Lisa Marsh at the time, though.

As a teenager when Armitage first appeared (and Inspector Morse was on TV at the time, even if I didn't watch it) there was absolutely no doubt that the look was directly influenced.  It'd be like denying M.A.C.H.1 was based on the Six Million Dollar Man when the prog started.

The Green, Green Gas of Home.

As for the film - it's not a well-known internationally famous franchise, so planning a three-film arc might not be the wisest of ideas.  Concentrate on the best one-off they can - though perhaps leave it open for potential sequels - the TG dies, but it's in a flaming shuttle and we don't see the body, so disfigured TG can appear in the next film.

Personally I'd love to see Fort Neuro, so not sure how well it would translate - though I'm all on board for robo-runners!

Oh, Colin Robinson actually does look like the Traitor General now you say it (after the shuttle crash).

Well, having the rebellious clone called Rogue, the sharpshot called Gunnar, the quartermaster called Bagman and the one who ends up in the helmet called Helm might be a stretch on the big screen, so I'm not that unhappy if they call the lead character clone 19 instead.

Should point out it won't even be the first animated film that Jones has directed - World of Warcraft...

If he interviewed Noam Chimpsky Chomsky then chances are he's on this list. Let's get  to it!

Music / Re: Band about 2000ad

I have an index of 2000ad-related music, which I update as and when (so I'll have to carefully go over this thread to see if there's anything to add that I was previously unaware of).

Quote from: sheridan on 17 January, 2024, 09:43:52 AMIf there is more than one adjective from the same adjective group then you need to add 'and'.  So you can have a "big, green sign" or a "red and white sign"*, but not a "big and green sign" or a "red, white sign".

* like a barber's shop.

Well feck me, I've been teaching English as a second language for nearly 20 years, and never knew the rule about the 'and' or the comma with adjectives.

If I may be a pendant for a second, though, I'd say that 'really' was an adverb, not an adjective, and qualifies the adjective after it rather than the noun - you can have a 'nice car', a 'really nice car' but not a 'really car', as 'really' describes the niceness rather than the car.

My defence is that it was close to the end of my break and I had to get back to work!

p.s. can't really make a post about grammar and complain about pedantry!

p.p.s. I'd consider you could say "big and green" but that it changes the emphasis of the sentence.

p.s. 'really' would be from the second group, so you can have 'really big' item.

That's because of your natural sense of how English pronunciation works.  Southerly, Southern, Souther.  It's what makes us all say "the little green pot" and never "the green little pot".

That'll be the order of adjectives.

  • quantity or number
  • quality or opinion
  • size
  • age
  • shape
  • colour
  • proper adjective (i.e. nationality, place of origin or material)
  • purpose or qualifier

If there is more than one adjective from the same adjective group then you need to add 'and'.  So you can have a "big, green sign" or a "red and white sign"*, but not a "big and green sign" or a "red, white sign".

There's a thread with a title along the lines of "2000AD predicted it first" that has a collection of news items which were covered in the GG years or decades earlier.

Quote from: IndigoPrime on 03 October, 2023, 02:29:15 PMstop it or this thread is getting locked.

To be honest, from the first post this thread has been pretty immature (and not in the fun pun way it went recently) punctuated by the adults among us being more realistic.  I'd be happy for a new Dredd TV series thread once there's any news to talk about.
