I went on Amazon to find a replacement copy of my Beck CD, Midnight Vultures. I checked out the MP3 version - £7.99. Then I checked out the CD version - £4.49, plus a free copy of the MP3 version!!! What's that all about?!?

Anyway, it's my favourite Beck album, and I'm playing it to death in the car right now, which is how the last CD got destroyed.

Third Estate Ned

The music press always seemed to deride that album as a failed Prince pastiche experiment but after Mellow Gold it's my favourite Beck album. Particularly for lyrics like "making all those gentlemen cry / realistic tears". Like yours, mine is scratched to buggery from frequent car use.

I just read that the other day in an article about "people that want you to overpay for things you don't have to" (paraphrase obv) about Neil Young's flac player and how the obsession with hi-fidelity has people paying £17.99 for FLAC downloads of a single album when you can buy a CD for cheaper than a regular iTunes download and rip them onto your computer AS flac files...

Madness!

I think Beck's okay, but Midnite Vultures is the only record of his I can remember listening to right through - I think the upbeat, parpy brass aesthetic is just more palatable to me than his stoner stuff. Anyway:

There are days that I like Beck and there are days when I really don't. My top five favourite Beck songs are:

Whatever happened to Rico, Dolman and Cadet Paris? I'm sooo out of the loop.

I strayed across Ultra Vivid Scene recently. Previously I was only aware of the look of their albums from books on 4AD cover art.

I picked up a set of five Rory Gallagher albums in Sainsbury's for nine quid.

Five albums.

For nine quid.

And it's Rory, so they rock like a whole bunch of bastards!

I'm currently in that 'too much music to take in properly' phase. But this was one heckuva bargain. For anyone interested, the albums contained are 'Deuce', 'Jinx', ''Calling Card', 'Top Priority' and 'Fresh Evidence'. Lotsa great stuff there.

What say we merge this thread with this one, hmm?

I haven't heard Lush in donkey's. http://youtu.be/buz5D8OWmRc

Ha! Funnily enough I listened to just this record (on CD single) just the other day. My daughter was intrigued by the cover. Anyway aside from really enjoying it and making me want to dig out a copy of Spooky it struck me how much it sounded like Screaming Mimi.

Who are Screaming Mimi, why don't you know Sheffield early 2000's local band scene? They are a band of my friends Jeff, Marti, Mark, Laureta and Jon and they played at our wedding. They really were very good.

Good find - not the best interview though! That's them minus Jeff (he was holiday as I recall) from a while ago (alas parenthood for 4 of the band has done for them).

Shame Electric Thighs one of their singles isn't there still as it was a fine video (clips in that interview) and good song. You can get it on Spotify, wonder what else is there. Have all their stuff on CD so never checked out what's around these days.

Oh hold on their MySpace is still there. Cool four songs there.

Colin, I can safely say that that sort of thing is my kind of thing. Cheers. :D
