Title: Strontium Dog Fan Film
Post by: Steve Green on 19 September, 2014, 03:46:23 PM
So, yeah... this is what we're working on as a follow-up to Minty.

https://www.facebook.com/strontiumdogfanfilm (https://www.facebook.com/strontiumdogfanfilm)

It's early days - script is pretty much there, needs to be storyboarded, but the main thing is confirming locations and getting the costumes made.

We have a couple of people in mind for the leads, but waiting on getting the helmet right before approaching anyone.

It's going to be shorter than Minty, the script is currently around 10 pages - I can't imagine it going beyond 15 mins.

Dustin Hoffman would make a great Sorry Bobbs, and isn't getting many other offers these days. Good luck getting the effects on the flash flood sequence right.

Well, my mind went through a process here.

"Strontium Dog Fan Film"

Yeah, that's going to be a bit crap and impossible to pull off.

"By the people who did Judge Minty"

Oh, in that case! *taps desk impatiently*

I bloody love you guys!!!

I guess this also means we will eventually see some cool SD merchandise over at Planet Replicas.

And without trying to dismay you with the thought of even more work, I'll add my vote for Rogue Trooper as the third in the trilogy.  With CF & co's animated short as the lead-in cartoon.

I can see why the Minty team were considering Rogue Trooper - all those troops in their identical uniforms and face-concealing masks/helmets must seem like a walk in the park compared to producing numerous unique muties.

Not to mention that you have 3 offscreen voiceovers for Rogue's gear...

Anyways.  I guess I might as well start reading SD (I'm probably about 1/3 way caught up in Dreddlore and 1/4 in Rogue), maybe I'll catch up by the time you guys get finished and actually know what anyone is talking about.

Yeah, Rogue has a lot of advantages for the reasons described.

We tossed around the ideas of using GoPros for the bits of equipment as well, thought it could be interesting having one of them looking down at their own body after the biochip has been extracted.

Not to completely derail this thread into a discussion of RT, but seeing as I just love hearing about movies that aren't meant to be -

Just curious what storyline you were going to do or if you were just going to make a general trailer a la the Masters of CG contest recently.  Just so I can cry into my pillow about it.
Title: Re: Strontium Dog Fan Film
Post by: Steve Green on 21 September, 2014, 10:00:42 AM
There were a couple of routes, one was more of a trailer narrated by the Traitor General, except it wasn't revealed as him until the end, just a 'greatest hits' of cool shots.

Also talked about Southers around a 'campfire', tethered to recharging station where their suit filters are cleaned. 'Tales of the GI' kind of thing.

No problem! Stront seems to find it's voice quicker than Dredd did, even the first 1 is probably more consistent than Dredd CF1 is.

It has a bit of younger skew, but still good.

Nice.  Best of luck with it. Has your camera got an Ezquerra filter? You totally have to outline foreground characters in thick black lines.

I always thought Incident on Major Minor was the quintessential "western" Stront story. One of my favourites. Or is it an original script?
Title: Re: Strontium Dog Fan Film
Post by: Steve Green on 23 September, 2014, 09:52:42 PM

It's an original(ish) script, it borrows elements from a few stories, we've reined back a bit on chucking everything in there, just trying to make it as tight as possible.

Under 15 mins is a better running time for festivals.

Things are coming along.

I've just been sent pics of the 3D print of the helmet, so we should have that, the Westinghouse and the Electronux props (as well as the badge) on the Planet Replicas stand (tables 3/4 in the Royal Armouries Hall) at Thought Bubble.

They're most likely going to be painted in primer, presented as sculpts rather than finished props.

The helmet has taken a few revisions, but we think we're there with it.

I'll post photos after Thought Bubble, as they're all WIP cameraphone pics at the moment.

ARF! I've always wondered whether the similarity was a result of Carlos unconsciously absorbing seventies telly or whether being asked to create a badge for a strip with the word dog in its name brought out some sly humour in him. He would have gotten away with it, if it wasn't for us pesky kids:

As a bairn, I always thought his helmet was supposed to look like a dog's face, complete with snout and black nose. Now it just looks like a helmet.

Is that a really obvious observation, or was I the only one?

First time I saw the character I thought his helmet was clearly supposed to resemble a dog. Nobody else ever mentions it, though, so I'm no longer quite so sure...

Oof. Regarding the helmet, I suppose the pointy bit does look a little like a snout in profile, but it hadn't occurred to me before. Carlos says the reason the original version of Alpha's green skin-tights featured yellow stripes was to suggest the markings of a wasp ... I'm not sure why.

How weird is it that there's a show called Dog The Bounty Hunter? That's ruined the most likely subtitle of the Strontium Dog film that will almost certainly never be made anyway.

Having become intimately familiar with Johnny's helmet... yes, yes...

It's changed a bit since the Starlord days - the big eyes were smaller, joined the yellow trim and there was a third one in the middle where the crest sits.

I can certainly see why Carlos references a wasp, there are insect motifs in the stripey jersey, the exoskeleton like armour and the general shape of the helmet.

But I can also see where people see a dog's head.

It will be interesting to see what the response to our take on it is - it's pretty close to the TV pilot version, and tried it keep it snug and sleek as we can while still keeping it recognisably Strontium Dog.

I'm sure I read something suggesting a couple of other pointers, like Alpha's sidekick being a great Dane.

Yeah, looks like you're stuck with us for your Stront fix.

Edgar Wright tweeted that he tried to get the rights for Stront before Shaun of the Dead, and I was told that Ben Wheatley is a Stront fan.

In 1999 there was a proposal drawn up that included a TV series bible by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra. It never got made but the material was re-used for the Strontium Dog reboot - The Kreeler Conspiracy.

Carlos's designs for that aborted TV pilot (the Stallone codpiece obviously made an impact):

Seem to remember seeing it on google images

Looked a bit too oversized though IMO

Would be nice if you got the helmet to look more realistic/practical

It's smaller than the termight one.

Really it's pretty close to the scale of this - the nose piece is a bit slimmer.

We talked about adding shut lines and stuff, but as soon as you start to do too much of that it tends to go away from the original.

It's very tricky when you're producing headgear to sell that people want to wear, trying to hit a sweet spot of one size fits all.

To be honest, I've never seen Johnny Alpha's helmet as a dog's head. I have always seen it as a futuristic version of one of those tricorne hats that were fashionable in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Sniffer Martinez (Alpha's partner before Wulf) had something similar, but hardly any others do - presumably because it makes it harder to depict a range of mutations.

I've sculpted the helmet as a 3D model (it's taken about 8 versions), and handed it over to Daniel who is printing it out and figuring out scale, making it real.

It's certainly more challenging than Dredd's helmet to make work.

Even by virtue of it not being a uniform, it's unusual.

I can't imagine us doing a fan film and not having the helmet, or changing it so much that's barely recognisable.

Cheers - it's still a WIP, may need tweaks once we get it on the actor, but being a digital model it's not so labour intensive to make it slightly larger if need be, than if it were a physical sculpt originally.

Still time re-printing and cleaning up, but a better option for this sort of thing I think.

Carlos, Jock and others have been great giving feedback which I really appreciate.

But then his 'head gear' is still important - does the actor set up for Johnny have his lustrous locks!

Having had a chat with Steve Minty this weekend I have to say everything I hear about this project excites me. Can't wait to see how things develop but suspect we're in for a treat of Minty size proportions (if shorter!)

He's not going to be wearing it in every shot - he's not Dredd (thankfully), so it's only when he's in action that he would have it.

My favourite pic of him is the Mayjer Minor one with more of a jacket with a thick collar, and carrying the helmet.

It's one of those things - that, it's a pain in the arse to get right and it still may not be entirely successful, but it would be a cop-out if it wasn't in there at all.

It can also function as part of the plot with the camera etc.

It's interesting to see where the upward 'prongs' sit on the dummy vs Sam.  They look right on the dummy but too high on Sam.  (Hopefully this does not mean an end to Sam's movie career!)

The helmet's sitting too high on Sam.

Basically the 3D print needs a little more space inside (although when it's cast the outside is cast only, so it doesn't matter production wise)

Here's a picture of Boo Cook wearing the helmet, I've shifted it down about half an inch.

Dan has shown a CG model of the GI Helmet on the PR fb page, but I don't know if anything like that is scheduled. You'd need to ask him.

The difference now is that PR has access to a 3D printer, which means that it saves time in development and revising versions of props.

It's not a miracle fix-all, prints can still go wrong and need cleaning up, but certainly helps having one as you can leave it running and work on something else.

See here's my problem

The front just seems to stick out to far for me

It just doesn't look practical...like something someone would wear in the real world

I reckon that forehead bit should be considerably reduced

Would be nice if it had the 'weathered' look too...like the new Dredd

As a Stront...It's a fair shout that Alpha has been in a few scrapes wearing his bin lid...should be battle worn accordingly

I wouldn't pay too much attention to the bust it's sitting on - it's pretty small.

It would be sitting further back than that.

I'd consider this Microsoft Halo series fairly real world, and their helmets are pretty similar.

It will definitely be battered around, the green areas will be dimpled and rough, the yellow areas I'm think will have some kind of carbon fibre base that's scratched and dinged.

Since we haven't put it on the actor yet, we hold back on fine details until we are satisfied with the scale.

Then all the detail is put in, the sculpt cast, and then the resulting real helmet is painted in layers, weathered etc.

You're welcome!

I can't speak for PR but yeah it makes sense to sell anything that's being made anyway...

I guess it depends on demand, as Dredd is the more well-known property and sells more.

The helmet does seem impractical, hampering Johnny's peripheral vision. Until of course, you realise his eyes could see through it anyway...
I'm sure whoever plays Johnny will be careful  :)

It's different in the comics though..you can be exaggerated as you like..it's make believe

I remember when the Dredd outfit pics first came out and a few people on the forum were aghast at the lack of giant eagle shoulder pad..but the reboot uniform worked..you could imagine judges going on patrol in it

i'd like to see a realistic interpretation of Alpha's outfit..and Looks like Steve & the crew aim to deliver just that  :)
Title: Re: Strontium Dog Fan Film
Post by: Steve Green on 18 November, 2014, 08:28:27 PM
I think the reboot one works well, although it the realism angle means it loses a bit of the defining silhouette of Dredd.

Alpha (helmet aside) is probably easier since it's a much more variable concept of an outfit.

It can either be a bandolier, or it can be a gilet or jacket, and it has much more layers than Dredd.

Pads will still be there, but scaled back a little.

Cheers - I think I'm going to avoid shooting too many profile shots if I can help it - Alpha has such a straight nose - it would look a bit odd in real life.

Presumably a straight nose isn't part of his Alpha powers...

Here's an earlier version of the Westinghouse (more of a streamlined redesign) that Dan made.

I imagine the materials will be similar to this but on the new one.

Jonny's nose is broken and reset that way.

Quote from: Carlos Ezquerra interview in DogbreathSTEVE:     What part of Johnny's distinctive look are you most pleased about?

CARLOS:    I suppose his face with the sad look on it, the broken nose and the curly hair. He can be dressed in different ways but you have always been able to recognize him.

Interesting, I always thought it was just the way Carlos draws a lot of his male characters.

Thing is, to do it - the brow would need to be built up as well, not sure if it would be too much of a distraction, or he would slightly alien like a STNG alien of the week...

My gut reaction is to agree that a prosthetic is not the way to go. It'd be unnecessary to add extra CGI too surely.

I think best to ignore the broken nose. That or break the Actor's nose...

Is Alphas helmet not a piece of military kit. I seem to remember the protruding front bit at the front contained a camera. It may be some Soviet Dis union special forces kit. I read in one of the early annuals or specials that his striped top was based on the Russian Spetsnaz Issue garment.
I like the helmet on display but in terms of the variable cartridge Westinghouse; I always liked Simon Harrison's honed down, simple, lethal looking design. Z

Cheers,

we had a fitting with the actor, and it looks great on him.

The sculpt is back with Planet Replicas, so that a mould can be made, plus making the green material rougher.

As for the Westinghouse

Dan made a simpler, more streamlined version ages ago, but we're trying to keep Carlos' style as much as we can.

Even within Carlos' version it changes a huge amount - we settled on the triangular barrel version, but even with that the flat side swaps sides, depending on the story.

The whole outfit is pretty hard to nail down as it's so fluid compared to Dredd's.

The Bandolier/Shoulder pads and helmet are a fairly consistent theme - just a case of trying to make the scales work.

Steve, I think what you people are doing is great. They're just observations about the Westinghouse. Carlos was the creator and absolutely it is his vision that should be portrayed. Z

Just a quick update.

Helmet has been cast and a (I think it's PU Rubber, same as the Minty shoulder pads) version has been made.

So it's solid, but has a bit of flex in the cheek guards so we can keep it snug, but still keep it as a one-piece.

It's been painted up and texture, and we're putting all the costumes together - not going to show anything until we do a proper shoot, but I'm very happy with the look so far.

I forgot to mention.

We've now found someone for this part.

We had great response and managed to whittle it down to 3 candidates, who then produced video auditions, and we asked John Wagner to give the casting vote. Which he kindly did.

It's only a fleeting appearance of the character, but it should be fun.

Filming is scheduled over the next few months, but post production and special effects mean it will still be at least the end of the year for our estimated finishing date.

Utterly pointless making casting suggestions for a fan film - you may as well be asking for ILM to do the effects.

Matt and Kev will do a blinding job.

Stop me if I'm going against the grain, but sticking a 72 year old with early symptoms of Parkinson's on stilts while they swing around a battle hammer, might not be the wisest thing to do.

Cheers, I would imagine so - it depends a lot when it's finished as to where it's shown.

Film festivals tend to be more restrictive about something being online than conventions - we'll cross that bridge when we come to it though.

Well, may as well share my suggestions regardless of the fan-film etiquette.

My earlier suggestion was Vincent Kassel, (See if you can find that one in the archives!) but he has aged some what since then and may not look right in that role right now!

Matt and Kev will do a blinding job.

Sure I guess, I haven't even seem them in action yet myself. So, I guess I was a bit quick to judge them.....yet!

Still, what do you think of my suggestion of Luke Evans. He has the appearance of Johnny Alpha even though he may seem a bit too old for some young twenty something bounty hunter mutant fighting his dad. Although this version.....

Doesn't look much like him at all. it's like he related to Judge Dredd with that huge chin/jaw of his.

Stop me if I'm going against the grain, but sticking a 72 year old with early symptoms of Parkinson's on stilts while they swing around a battle hammer, might not be the wisest thing to do.

Well, this was somehow covered in third Hobbit film using special FX. He really seemed to be throwing the rocks left, right and centre there.

I suppose we should be grateful it's not Harry Styles.

Have a loom at what I did here after combining photos or at  least two or three older actors with this picture of Harry Styles....

Guess who the others are.....

You can see I messed around with his brow, lowering it in the middle more over his eyes.

It's supposed to be how I picture Slaine in real life using Harry Styles face and the face of one or two other actors much older than him to give him a more mature look. Preferably when he became king at j just over ages of 21 or 22 to 25. Yes, Of course I understand this isn't far from Harry 's real age. Given that my assumption that people age  or mature a little faster in the non-forgiving environment of those Pre-Dilluvian times.  That's why I might think it's okay for anybody from the age of 20-25 to portray somebody at least five years younger.

Yet, I'm not happy with this look and would agree if you thought it is just a little bit too creepy even for the likes of Slaine.  Although, I can't deny his distinct Leprekaun like features that may be applicable to a lot of Irish folk. That's how I would imagine Slaine to look. Just take no notice of his hair and that second picture may hint at some dwarf or goblin heritage as well.

If I found this picture to be agreeable with you all, I may use it for the template for a more cartoon version of him in that Slaine very short fan-featurette-trailer I said I was working on.

Yeah Steve, simply hire internationally known comedian and actor Billy Connolly to play Wulf Sternhammer in your fan film, then use highly convincing and expensive CGI to make it appear as if he is taller than Luke Evans (or Harry Styles).

It's not rocket science mate.

With all due respect to any actors you name - it's irrelevant.

Thryllseeker - just to be clear, people are saying that they don't appreciate you making this sort of post in a thread about the fan film they are putting so much effort into making.  If you want to masturbate fantasize over the casting of a Strontium Dog film, then why not start a seperate thread for it and stop derailing this one.

One thing I've always liked about Johnny Alpha, is the way Carlos changes his clothes for different stories. Having said that I was pretty relieved that he is wearing his more 'standard look' in the new story.  :)

This picture has been sitting in my promo image folder for a while, so I thought I'd post it.

I wasn't having a pop at anyone in particular, more a general observation about films in general.

The first teaser for Minty wasn't through choice, that was down to a certain person lifting a bit of my reel after I got made redundant and put of a bit of Minty on the end.

I'm just not that wild about making trailers for our own things, certainly not for a short.

I really don't see the point of showing highlights and sneak previews which dilute the end product.

That looks great!

Are Alpha's eyes meant to glow all the time?  I thought they were white and featureless (like when you roll your eyes back so only the whites are visible) and only glowed when he was using particular powers.
Title: Re: Strontium Dog Fan Film
Post by: Steven Sterlacchini on 17 June, 2015, 02:03:07 PM
At the moment we're going for a general low glow all the time, but with a more intense glow when he's using his 'powers'.
Title: Re: Strontium Dog Fan Film
Post by: M.I.K. on 17 June, 2015, 04:53:51 PM
Hmm... I've not really thought about it before, but I've always assumed Alpha's eyes are persistently glowy and work just like Minty says, whereas Rogue Trooper's, (whose eyes look similar on the page), I've always thought to be more opaque and put down any apparent glowiness to his eyes reflecting light like an animal's would.
Title: Re: Strontium Dog Fan Film
Post by: Steve Green on 17 June, 2015, 05:33:49 PM
My thinking was, people wouldn't have a reaction if it was just white eyes, thinking it was blindness or some form of visual impairment, whereas an actual subtle glow would say 'mutant'.

It also ties in to the whole radiation/alpha waves thing.

And yeah it could change depending on mood, whether he was looking through walls, or reading someone's mind.

Sometimes Carlos draws it with a red glow, wikipedia refers to the eyes being incandescent...

Yes, he captured the actors faces, but they remain close enough to the original comic look as to not look out of place at all, if one were to see them in the Prog.

I'm not saying Carlos shold do that in future stories. The original looke is fine. But I'm sure you get what I mean.

I had a grand time and can't wait for Steve to unleash the digital results.

It was also grand to catch up with some folk outside of a convention and to get to meet Wulf! (Such a nice chap)
Can't wait for this and those badges are tip-top.

Green screen green with envy.

Looks astonishingly exciting. Costumes, as ever, are sublime.

So yeah are people getting CGI mutations? I've seen something over at Lauren's FB page that suggests things are happening that way (as that a mask?)
Title: Re: Strontium Dog Fan Film
Post by: Steve Green on 27 July, 2015, 10:52:27 AM
Yeah, going to be a mixture.

John was wearing a cheap and cheerful mask, which needs a bit of digital blending.

Some will have digitally altered features, some maybe totally digital heads - depends what works really.

Middenface is also missing from that shot - the actor had an allergic reaction to an insect bite a couple of days before, and sticking latex appliances under hot lights didn't seem like an ideal way to recuperate, so we're scheduling another green screen day to layer him in.

I was wondering if the three guys, (Yes, I know C.F. in the middle there!) standing behind on the right are just random S.D.'s?????

Is the one on the far right meant to be Midden Face McNulty, sans-middens?

The lad who's playing McNulty was ill, so his outfit remained on the hanger. His scenes will be filmed at a later date, once he's better.

It's a question for Planet Replicas.

The Strontium Dog costume has a lot more pieces, moulds don't exist for things like the shoulder pad as it wasn't really made in mind for producing copies.

Personally, I think the badge, westinghouse, electronux and helmet are most likely candidates - not sure if it's worth the effort involved to do a costume compared to how many would be sold.

We'll certainly be offering some SD work soon ;-)
As for a full costume, thats a tricky one, only as Johnny is a unique character.

Its a different angle than a set of characters, like with a batch of Judges, where its a case of more the merrier !

Never say never....

Badge. Yup.

I don't Jane a Judge Badge yet cos I don't cosplay a Judge (longterm I do have a Long Walk build in mind though).

Stront Badge first fire me :) and I have a mate at work who is taking about being my Stront partner.
Title: Re: Strontium Dog Fan Film

Well, the upside of Stront cosplay is it's pretty achievable as a costume, more a case of working out a mutation.

Even Johnny rarely wears the same costume for more than two or three stories! The helmet stays the same but everything else constantly changes.

Post by: Steve Green on 04 August, 2015, 04:33:38 PM
Yeah, when we spoke to Carlos, it was something along the lines of 'One large pad, one small pad and the helmet'

The Westinghouse changes a fair bit as well.

The bandolier and the striped top are a reasonably consistent feature, so it made sense to go that route.

I thought once we had the helmet cracked it would be pretty easy, but it was quite involved getting the rest working.
Title: Re: Strontium Dog Fan Film
Post by: Leigh S on 04 August, 2015, 05:52:49 PM
The large pad small pad is definitely the classic look - I have a thing for the jacket he wears at times - Incident on Mayger Minor and The SSorry Case spring to mind?  Plus the double small pads of Journey Into Hell - both would be arguably easier to recreate for the screen, so hats off for going the whole hog so impressively!
Title: Re: Strontium Dog Fan Film
Post by: Steve Green on 04 August, 2015, 06:23:42 PM
Yeah, I like that look as well, although the classic(ish) version works quite well as a mirror of Wulf's bandolier.

We basically took somewhere from the Kreeler conspiracy version (minus codpiece) and tweaked it.

Now that's suffering for your art. The props and costumes look like a 2000AD page come to life. Ezquerra and Cam Kennedy made real? Yess! The 3D printer and the crew must be working overtime but the results from judging even from this unfinished piece are definitely going to be worth it.

Apart from Wulf's bandolier bits there's not much 3D printed in that clip.

Steve S did a great job sourcing bits and pieces that looked like they might fit in, and Dan putting the big shoulder pads together.

The hammer would give out long before someone's head did. It's foam, most of the weight is in the shaft (insert joke here)

You still wouldn't want to get hit repeatedly in the head with it, without some protection though - although we have a second LARP hammer which might be a bit easier if you get hit with it.

I've just got back from ICE, to show Carlos the props, he didn't take any prompting...

Where did you get a 3D Scanner from?  What would you use the digital double for without giving away any story secrets?
Title: Re: Strontium Dog Fan Film
Post by: Steve Green on 23 November, 2015, 09:04:58 PM
There are services to scan people.

http://my3dtwin.com/ (http://my3dtwin.com/)

Their main business is printing statues, but they can supply the original models.

It's for a shot on the skimmer mainly, when we made Minty it was very flat as it was just a locked off camera composited on top of a 3D bike - this way it will be an entirely 3D character on a 3D bike.
Title: Re: Strontium Dog Fan Film
Post by: Steve Green on 23 November, 2015, 09:08:32 PM
I guess it's not really a 3D scanner either - it's an array of 64 cameras and software using something called photogrammetry to reconstruct the person as a 3D model (and then uses photos to texture them)

I have the same software and it can be used for head scans with a single camera, but people move too much for a single camera to work well.

https://vimeo.com/113081428 (https://vimeo.com/113081428) One I tried out as a test at Thought Bubble last year
Title: Re: Strontium Dog Fan Film
Post by: IAMTHESYSTEM on 24 November, 2015, 11:49:12 AM
Still very useful for would be filmmakers. A lot cheaper I'm guessing than hiring out a Film labs 3D scanning device and the results look good to my untrained eye.
Title: Re: Strontium Dog Fan Film
Post by: Steve Green on 24 November, 2015, 02:35:23 PM
Yeah, you can get good results even with fairly cheap equipment - a lot of this kind of thing trickles down to the consumer level - there's an app called 123D catch which can do it on a phone - all the calculations are done at the server side (if you don't mind uploading them)
Title: Re: Strontium Dog Fan Film

Aside from the harness and belt and shoulder pads, the costume seems little like the kids version if you know what I mean.

Didn't he wear a stripy lime and green shirt underneath. Like the French men wear their stripy shirts but of different colour.

it might be the colours just look too bright, maybe it's the material. I looks like a type of false suede, when I figures he be really wearing a type of rubbery lycra.

But maybe that's not in budget.
Title: Re: Strontium Dog Fan Film
Post by: Steve Green on 25 November, 2015, 08:49:41 AM
The bodysuit is suede - the thinking was Carlos art is very gritty - so natural materials seemed a better choice.

Also considered neoprene but thought it would fold awkwardly.

There were limited colours available and you run into trouble with lime green against a green screen backdrop.

Blue screen studios are hard to come by, and Harvey's uniform is blue.

As with everything, you have to make the best of choices offered otherwise you'd never get anything made.

Post by: Mardroid on 25 November, 2015, 09:06:32 AM
Alpha's outfit changes quite often in the comics anyway. Allows for a lot of poetic licence, and you've got all the main things there. Apart from the armoured cod-piece.... but I think that's probably a good thing.

Good job. Be interesting to see how it all looks on screen.
Title: Re: Strontium Dog Fan Film
Post by: Steve Green on 25 November, 2015, 09:53:14 AM
Cheers, yeah we just took that Kreeler conspiracy as pretty much the template - minus the codpiece.

We did have kneepads moulded up, but it was very last minute and we were bit conscious that they might not bend well or weaken the suit underneath if we glued/stitched them.

There's also the option to tweak colours etc. in post production - I intend to push the dark green more towards an olive colour, and if I can find a way to tweak the pale green stripes, I'd like to do that as well.

Anyone up for helping us out for a few hours?

Saturday 13th of December from 10am until 1pm
LONDON, Camberwell

4 STAND-INS NEEDED.
YOU WON'T BE RECOGNISABLE ON SCREEN

Average height 5,6 - 5,11
Slim to average build
Shortish hair
No beards.

We are filming a few pick up shots and need to put some people in costumes to cover some digital shots, that roughly match actors we have already filmed. To confirm you WON'T be recognisable on screen.
If you can definitely make the date, message me through a forum PM.

Now I only know Strontium Dog enough to be fairly familiar with 1,2,4,5, but not he one called Harvey.

Even though I own the reprinted-phone book editions.

Harvey was like the administrative controller of the Doghouse, issuing jobs to the stronts and telling them to keep in line etc.  He was bumped off by the Stix brothers following a tussle with Johnny Alpha.  I hated that because I enjoyed the Harvey character in the strip but it was done so well that I loved it too.  It went something like:

The Stix brothers are alone with Harvey in his office, helping him up.
Harvey: It was Alpha!  He knocked me over!
Stix 1: It's worse than that, Harvey.  He killed you.
Harvey: Killed me?  Alpha didn't -- <KABLAM!>
Stix 1 (holstering his gun): Harvey's dead.
Stix 2: Definitely Alpha's doing.

Harvey is the Norm on the Doghouse that handed out the Bounties.

And yes, Integra Fairbrook is a stage name. She was also in Judge Minty as Judge Anderson and Aquila's Daughter. She also modeled for Greg Staples as Anderson for Dark Justice - you can easily recognise her in Greg's paintings. Lovely lady.

The author James Herriot took his name from a Goalkeeper who played for Birmingham City.

Stage names, or not designed plumes in Herriot's case, often come from inspiration.

It makes perfect sense I suppose as he's not a mutant, nor born in the age he had his adventures and as such was very possibly not registered as Strontium Dog, he was just Johnny's close friend.

Actually that's Dylan Teague. It was used as the cover for 'Prophet Margin' Iirc.

Not sure if Wulf is legally allowed to be a stront, time displaced Viking and all that.

Mind, I reckon the tax collector would have an opinion.

We're planning on using digital doubles for a few shots.

Steve Green just got one of our test scans back today.

Looking at the boots

Why would you wear splats, (I figured they're only to make you boots look more pirate!) if you could just have the boots looking that way anyway. If those are for protection, why not just make the boot itself with that in mind. Otherwise, that does like kind of cool.

Not sure a new thing for him either.

I was going to let you all know I had some issues with him looking so ordinary with reqards to his physique. yet, I guess you just made him look that much more beleiveble by not enhancing him in any way. He does have the right coloured hair/beard.

Has anybody heard him talk?
Title: Re: Strontium Dog Fan Film
Post by: Steve Green on 10 March, 2016, 07:49:26 AM
The spats add a bit more detail to boots which were a bit plain otherwise.

Custom made boots were out of the question - the alternatives are to stick bits onto existing ones, but the spats are a lot more reliable, and were also a nod to him being a viking.

It's not like there are going to be endless close-up shots of his feet anyway.

Regarding his voice. Vikingish.

All the dialogue will be re-recorded in the studio anyway, so we can tweak it.

I had a chat with a nice Durham Red at the Edinburgh Capital Sci-Fi Con. She was most chuffed that I recognised her outfit.  It was sort of based on the old action figure (the one that was in the range with Slaine and Dredd and Johnny Alpha). Never managed to sell her a nerf blaster though.

Nerf BLASTERS I believe is what you refer to them as.

It's not me, it's my little Brother and his Monkeytron Collective (look them up on Facebook).

The blasters are mostly modded and have customer paint jobs.

The outfit was eye-catching but not skimpy.  She'd adjusted it quite cleverly so there wasn't a stupid amount of flesh on display.

Very impressive! The flying bikes really nailed it for me. They added such a fine touch so similar to  Ezqueera's art from the comic. Great to have Edmund Dehn back and the two leads were certainly convincing as Alpha and Wulf plus some shoot-y action. If a goat had to die for this pic it's okay by me:Hail Satan!

3DS Max for the 3D side of things, although Alex and Ronan's ship and doghouse were modeled in Maya and brought in.

After Effects on the compositing side - Johnny's eyes were/are the most time consuming - tracked in Mocha (comes bundled with After Effects).

I usually tracked the cheek/area around the eye, so blinks wouldn't affect the track - then linked a mask to that.

Should be OK doing the rest myself, got into a pretty good rythm doing it.

3DS Max!! I loved do that on spare time, sadly only software I got that from another student work on Win 95 :( did many 3D designs and animations. Wish I got it somehow...

johnny's eyes effect is impressive, with AE timeline motion and I would add mask too for blinks!

Yeah I just manual animate the blinks when needed.

There were some tough shots where it was really dark and you can't see the real eyes, managed to fudge it by brightening everything up and just tracking off the head.

If I was doing that shot again, I would have pushed for real LEDs worn in front of the eyes.

Oh yeah know what you means about add effects in dark, very hard but go with gut and see final render result.

Ahh LEDs on eyes would show light effects on another people. That's smart. But could be tricky if it in direct at camera.

Just watched a film called ARQ on Netflix. Sort of a poor mans Edge of Tomorrow / Groundhog Day, but quite enjoyable. Anyway the reason I write is that the hero's main weapon throughout the film is an electronux glove, which looked rather good on screen. I wonder if this idea was lifted directly from the hallowed pages of 2000AD?
Title: Re: Strontium Dog Fan Film
Post by: Steve Green on 21 September, 2016, 03:58:52 PM
Maybe - electrified brass knuckles have been cropping up in the real world for a couple of years.

I noticed in the Ghostbusters reboot one of the characters has something similar.
Title: Re: Strontium Dog Fan Film
Post by: amines2058 on 21 September, 2016, 04:27:12 PM
These had visible electrical arcing across the knuckles of the glove identical to the electronux. Have been trying to find a screen shot to show you.
Title: Re: Strontium Dog Fan Film
Post by: Bat King on 23 September, 2016, 10:03:26 AM
Ib watched ARQ on Netflix earlier this week. The glove doesn't actually look like the item but the effect is identical to the Electrolux. In ARQ it is more or less a glove with wires.

Of course the second I saw it I wondered if someone read Tornado or 2000AD...

There is of course that thing called coincidence. I've written things that haven't been published (haven't we all lol) and years later TV, Film or Literature 'copy' me.

A work in progress teaser has been shared by Starburst Magazine.

The film is being screened at Thought Bubble in November. This isn't the 100% complete version of the film. As with Judge Minty, we screened a nearly complete version at Thought Bubble, and then spent a further number of months refining it, before we put it online for free. We will also have a table if anyone wants to drop by and say hi.

Just a quick post to thank everyone, especially John Wagner, who attended the various screenings over the weekend. And thanks to Rebellion for giving permission for the public screenings.

We're hoping to run a version past Carlos Ezquerra at an opportunity convenient to him.

This was a special edit of the film created for Thought Bubble Comic Art Festival.

Considering that this was not the completely finished article, with some place holder effects and requiring some fine tuning and polish, we had a nice response from audiences with some valuable feedback to work on.

We will now head back in to our cave to get to work trying to complete the film for release on the on Youtube, possibly some time in May.

Here are a few photos from a special screening which happen on the Saturday evening (Photographer David Lindsay)

I even got to meet (and offer my sympathy to) the long suffering Mrs Commando Forces

Wow—that was made here in Crewe and had its (somewhat overdue) premiere (http://www.crewechronicle.co.uk/news/crewe-south-cheshire-news/gridiron-uk-movie-premier-crewe-11962073) recently.

Caz said it was a delight talking to you and when I told her that you were the person who won the book of signatures and were adding to it over the weekend, it fleshed you out a bit more, from when I told her about it last Christmas.

You're telling me, I've actually got a pair of hand-me-up boots (he's a 13 now). He's now around 6ft 3'ish and heading towards Mr Proudhuff in height :o

Caz was a bit worried if he'd be okay during the film but he behaved pretty well and seemed to enjoy the whole event.

As for the event, it was sneckin' great! Getting through the crowds in the shopping centre was fun, as they had a brass band going up and down the escalators and we had to make our way through Next to get to the top floor.
Cinema 5 & 1/2 was the place to be and on entry we were all given a SD Evidence Bag (goodie bag) which had a beautiful booklet inside, an SD pin badge and a drink credit with Tharg on it, which you handed over at the bar for a soft drink, or a massive beer. This was torture for me but I was given a spare to keep and  in the end everyone was told that if they wanted one to keep they would run some more off.

After everyone else started to arrive and mingle it was soon time to start the film and so we all made our way into the screening room, which had three rows of comfy settee's and armchairs.

After the introductions, the lights dimmed and the next 20 minutes just flew by. We had action with all the SD kit on display, stunning visuals, surprises, beautiful imagery from real locations, a bit of fun thrown in and of course the actors who made it work so well and made you believe it all.

The lights came up after a thoroughly well deserved round of applause and John gave it his seal of approval and then we went and all chatted about it in the other room again. Lots of pictures taken but then I had to take the family for a meal before I caught up with the gang later in the evening.

It was brilliant and the lads have shown yet again what can be done with love of the source material, dedication and their many skills. BRAVO

Just chuffed people enjoyed it - all a bit stressful leading up to it, the escalators leading up to the cinema were blocked off because of some dance performance in the shopping centre, and we were told to go via Next.

We were carrying props, pull up banners etc so navigating through homewares carrying all that stuff was fun, then letting people know how to find us.

Now it's round 2 improving it...

Went to the earlier Sunday screening at TB and was blown away. It's Minty+ basically. Both leads are brilliant, the effects (even unfinished) are breathtaking and the story is well-paced. It's a genuine joy to see the electronux whipped out and der happystick swingin' - folk here who haven't seen it will not be disappointed. I wear my SD pin with pride!

Personally the thing I was the most overjoyed about and wot had me and Lady Geoffery hi-fiving like loons was...

Post by: Steve Green on 08 November, 2016, 06:41:23 PM
Yeah he really nailed Wulf straight away - Johnny's a little trickier - we asked John Wagner about the voice, and he said well-spoken but not too posh, Daniel Craig was mentioned.

It's tricky, Dredd has his Clint Eastwood thing, but that doesn't really work for an english accent.

Durham Red's the other tricky one, she's supposed to be from the NE if you go by her name, but there's nothing in the way her dialogue is written to suggest any region, compared to Middenface obviously, or Evans.

Yeah weirdly I always imagined her sounding like... American Southern. Can't explain why. Have no basis for that.

I remember hearing (maybe at a comic con) or reading that John Wagner and Alan Grant had a disagreement about what Durham Red's accent should be. One of them argued she should have a Durham accent and the other that she should have a posh accent, just in case Strontium Dog made it to the big screen.

Guess the first people who have had to deal with this are you guys. I am of course assuming the character does have a speaking role in your film.

She lived with her norm parents until she was ten, then moves to Milton Keynes according to Island of the Damned - so she probably started out living in a town near Milton Keynes.

I'm saying she comes from Oxford until someone tells me different.

She'd sound like Laura Croft rather than anyone else. I always thought Johnny Alpha spoke with a southern American accent. He was always saying 'Ma'am' and 'Sir' so I thought he was from there. Bonkers but true.

The whole UK thing never even featured until much later on.

Even the Doghouse took a while.

I imagine if it ever got to a mainstream TV or film, he would have been American.

NBK was upgraded to president of Earth in the Kreeler conspiracy, which was a retooling of the unused pilot script, and there's no real mention of the UK in that, apart from a passing mention of Middenface (it also mentions a different mutation - John originally had him as having bits sticking out of his face, but Carlos went with the lumpy head)

Cheers, the doghouse scene was a bit of a headache.

We couldn't schedule Harvey and the Stronts together so that was all separate, then the guy playing middenface got bitten by an insect and literally had lumps on his head and had to be admitted to A&E a couple of days before shooting.

So we delayed him to shoot with Harvey, and then the studio double booked so it was a change of studio last minute.

Would loved to have had more stronts in there, but organisationally it was already a challenge - that's one area a bigger crew and budget would have helped loads.

I'm slightly embarrassed to admit that
despite having seen the film a few times (albeit mainly the other version) I only just realised that the scream the Colonel hears is the voice of his future self! I just assumed (like him) it was a previous victim of the Chuckwalla (which in a timey wimey way is true)  although the story works that way too.

So when Johnny's scans that area, he is effective seeing future events a few seconds on (from his POV) ... which he then triggers with the time bomb. Brilliant!
I'm so slow sometimes.

I was really struck by what a brutal weapon der happy stick is when you see it in live action, especially when the wonderful Wulf is finishing off prone opponents. In fact this is one of the great strengths of this production, it takes fantastic elements like Johnny's eyes and time gadgets and shows that they can be believable and really strikingly original on the screen.

Top marks too for the Doghouse briefing scene - I know Steve says it was a headache to shoot and less populated than he would like, but it was a relationship hairs-on-the-back-of-the-neck moment for me to see so many iconic characters translated so flawlessly.

Heh, I did briefly wonder about using the spiked end on someone, but that might have been a bit much.

There are a few things we tossed around - one opening was starting on the SD 'There was a time when criminals...' pitch that appears in Starlord. And it becomes a recruiting pitch on a datapad, with two Stront rookies on a shuttle from MK to the Doghouse.

One's excited, the other thinks it's all horseshit.

"We're going to make it big, man!" Then cut to their faces on the Doghouse vidscreen *dead*

The way the time drogue works, it could be pretty good as a torture device for a nastier Alpha - setting it half and half between life and death.

Also thought it would have been fun to break up the montage of the monotony of the cabin scene with a pirate ship attack and Wulf brightening up, then back to the cabin for the long voyage.

With hindsight, sure we would have done some stuff differently, but you just have to work around what you have at the time.

No problem,

Once I'd done them for Minty it was pretty easy - just gets a bit tricky when dialogue overlaps.

Might make it easier if anyone wants to do a foreign language translation as well.

The bored-on-the-long-spaceflight scenes were excellent.  I watched that section thinking, "The actors are never going to look 100% spot-on for the characters but they both capture them so well" - then I saw a particular shot of helmetless Johnny leaning up against a wall before Wulf helps him up.  Unbelievable. It was Johnny Alpha.

I was fooled by the shoot-out at the start.  I thought the human who won was actually a mutant with a third arm around the back.

Edward Dehn was great and completely unMinty-like.  With a bald headed wig and an opaque contact over one eye, he's going to make the perfect Traitor General when you do the last of the trilogy*.

* Okay, I know it's not true but someone was bound to say "When are you going to..." at some point.  Now it's out of the way.

Exactly this.  Without wanting to sound cynical or disparaging, I've always thought that was why John Wagner suggested it when he heard the two Steves were considering a Rogue Trooper short.  "Why not do Strontium Dog instead?"

One original idea was that the gang were going to be faux mutants, basically pretending to be Stronts to give the agency a bad rep (killing bystanders etc)

It was pointed out it might be too confusing, especially with Johnny looking almost normal, but the robot arms guy is a bit of a holdover from that.

I think originally there wasn't so much of a fight, it was basically beam polariser and they're wiped out quickly and onto the shootout.

The views thing is interesting - I think Minty did 30K overnight, but it was coming out after Dredd, so hit a sweet spot really.

Stront is much more niche, and depends how much news sites pick it up.

Wow. Just wow. Phenomenal.

Gets the balance exactly right between the fantastic style of Ezquerra's art and the need to make the costumes and props look functional. Performances nailed without exception. Effects absolutely jaw-dropping, both technically and aesthetically. A wonderful plot and script. Humour, violence, drama... all there in abundance. Most of all though, it just IS Strontium Dog.

Massive congratulations to everyone involved.

Well done.

Post by: Steve Green on 24 May, 2017, 02:18:36 PM
Yeah it was a bit of a nod to Duncan Pizer and Stix with the hat, we pretty much went on a cherry picking mission.

The aim was to just have something that barreled along and gave a bit of an intro to Strontium Dog.

Originally it was going to be shorter, much more of a montage like the cost of bounty-hunting - that survived in Wulf moaning about the time bomb.

I think the hardest thing we found was Johnny being a bit too powerful - there are some setbacks, but there wasn't really the space to introduce everything and take them away.

I'm pretty happy with the interrogation scene, it feels like that's where you make the fewest compromises because of the lack of budget.

Could really have done with extra crew to act as runners, there are a few occasions where people offered to help but had to drop out because of schedules - it made us a bit wary of relying on people though.

Yes, a good way to go.
The lovely thing is, of you don't pick up on it, it still works. The colonel shows no surprise when he hears the scream after all, and his response suggests feeding his enemies or even annoying employees to the chuckwalla is a regular occurrence.
Thanks - that was a hairy moment - we were supposed to be booked into the larger of the 2 studios at the green screen place, and they'd booked us into the smaller one.

The set only just fit.

Also meant that we couldn't light the green screen separately which made the keying around the top (the window area was all CG) a lot harder than it should have been.

I loved it. Johnny and Wulf were perfect - I'm also pleased to see Johnny has evolved past the 70s bubbleperm. His voice was spot on too - gritty and a bit posher than I'd imagined, coming from a politician's son, it would be, wouldn't it?

Speaking of which, it was lovely to hear Durham Red sounding like she came from Durham (not that I'm any expert on the minutiae of Northern English accents, but it worked for me). She was, of course, appropriately beautiful too.

Middenface was great too, and the cameo from Kid Knee was a real buzz.  Also, did the Abelard Snazz lookalike ever appear in the comic?

Johnny and Wulf's journey towards the bad guy's lair really reminded me of the 2012 Dredd film, in the best way possible.

Lovely stuff, surpassing even the great Judge Minty. My only gripe was that i wanted another 2 hours of it - not that I'd inflict that on the makers!

Title: Re: Strontium Dog Fan Film
Post by: Steve Green on 29 May, 2017, 02:51:10 PM
Thanks, we asked John Wagner if he had any guidance for Johnny's accent, and he said English, well-spoken, cited Daniel Craig.

We just took a punt on Durham Red's accent - there's nothing in her written dialogue to indicate dialect, but given her name that's what we went for.

The double decker mutant, was just a random mutant - I would liked to have done more with the doghouse, but it took a good couple of hours with just middenface's makeup prep, so it would have been a very early start, more makeup artists working simultaneously.

In an ideal world, it would have been a real set or a location with some added CGI dressing and a cast of at least 30 stronts in makeup and costume - but that was never going to happen on our budget.

What gets me is that you have produced something that is on a par with, if not better than, a lot of the crap that makes it to the mainstream channels and you are apologising for the quality of the end result.  Seriously sir, if that made it to Blu ray then you would have a customer here in a heart beat.  That said, I can appreciate how, as the artist in question you may be more conscious of the flaws than us in the audience.

In short, an outstanding piece of work.  Looking forward to seeing what comes next.

Thanks,

I read somewhere that it's the difference between you knowing what you wanted to get on the page or on screen, but no-one else sees that, just the end result.

I could certainly spend another 6 months tweaking things, but the reality of bills to pay and hitting that date we'd set ourselves meant it had to go up.

I just tend to slip into a bit of a depression during post-production, since it's mostly on my shoulders by that point.

We ended up re-shooting the closeups of the dead stront, because the original wasn't gruesome enough and only held up in the wide shots. Same with the interrogation montage, we re-shot all that along with some other bits just before Christmas.

I'll be honest, it was a slog to get it done for Thought Bubble, and another slog to do it for the 40th. It's a relief to get it out the door.

Thanks,

Yeah I think on the late 90s showtime pilot they weren't going to do it all the time.

I worked out a fairly good technique - it was a bit trickier when eyes were obscured or dark shots where you couldn't see much.

Our rationale was that the eyes had to be doing something rather than just looking like blind contact lenses.

The only shot where I copped out was the reflection of Johnny in the glass at the end, there wasn't really a strong image to track there.

That's a paranoid perfectionist talking! It was never noticed and Johnny's eyes were fantastic throughout!

We had a little bit of a play with Carlos' commissions...

more than enjoyed - soooo professional and enjoyable

I'd even go as far as saying that i got the same vibe as when i went to the cinema to see the watchmen - spine-tingling feeling of seeing much beloved characters of my childhood made flesh

Yeah, I think that's partially why we wanted to do it, there's always the argument about film not making a comic more valid, but there's an appeal to see what it would look like.

It's why I've got no interest in doing a 2012 short - copying an existing translation doesn't appeal to me.

A commission Steve had done based roughly from a scene in the film.

I tell you now, if someone wants to crowdfund a proper comic adaptation of the short with Carlos on art duties, I'd be in in a heartbeat.

Thank you.  :)

I don't think there's much in the film that hasn't already been cover by existing stories.  :D

Hopefully Johnny will be back in the prog in due course.

Nice to see Carlos drawing Wulf in a sequential panel page though.

I know that lots of different elements from the strip were used in the short.  They melded together well anyway.  It would be nice to have that as a standalone special.  How close are we to the 40th Anniversary of the start of Starlord?  Next May?  How about that for an anniversary special?
Title: Re: Strontium Dog Fan Film

Yeah, I guess out of the strips we picked from

Death's Head (4 arm guy)
Stone Killers (someone killing stronts + stone aliens)
Blood Moon (let's do the timebomb together)
Kreeler conspiracy (look of soldiers and truck and assault on compound)
Rage (The Liner)
Two-faced terror (the Chukwalla)
First episode (mutant at the end, and time drogue)

+ any use of beam polarisers/electronux/happy stick

I can't see Rebellion commissioning a strip, they've kept an arms-length from fan-film stuff, and we can't afford to commission one.

Besides it really is just a pick and mix from stuff that's already out there.

BTW, London Super Comic Con will be showing it at 17:30 on Friday 25th August, and we're doing a Q+A afterwards.

Not sure what kind of attendance there's going to be on a schoolday, but there's a big Brian Michael Bendis thing in the same room straight after, and it seats 500.

Should be interesting...

Am I wrong, or is there no part of the film where Johnny Alpha says "Number <whatever> cartridge!"

No it's not in there.

Mulled over putting it in the bit when he's viewed through the sniper scope, so you would have seen him mouth it, but decided against it.

Yeah, I'm not interested in doing any more 2000 AD stuff, neither is Steve.

SD was a thanks to John and Carlos.

Trying to get any interest from websites has been a pretty thankless task for the most part, and if Rebellion want to keep an arms length from mentioning it even being online, then I'm not going to spend time and money on someone else's IP.

I feel bad that I've not written anything about it... Still struggle to write at the moment.

There's a ton of stuff I wish I'd written about with me feeling bad about around half a dozen (not seeking sympathy, just stating a fact). Another is the film Daemonium, now on Netflix.

If the team do their own IP I'll plug the hooting heck out of it ;)
