Who else remembers this amazing moment? This storyline and the final line in particular has stayed with me ever since - I remember it clear as day even 30 years on.

They definitely wouldn't be able to get away with it now, probably quite rightly, though it was possibly the fist moment in my young life when I went "Yes!".

THat Mr Hicks was a right bastard - well done Bullet! The whole he's a bully and the resolution all took place over one episode - probably better if they'd spun it out over the series but kids do have short attention spans. Especially with Magpie on ITV.

I just finished watching all 18 episodes of series 4 (1981) and it was great stuff. Issues included vandalism, bullying, drinking, illegal lotteries, extrotion, stealing lightbulbs, stowawaying, eyeing up Sexy Lexy, getting the strap and 1p being added to tuck shop prices.

The lightbulb thefts were by the evil Doyle and he sold them to this great Jewish stereotype who kept saying 'Oy,oy' before haggling on the price. There was also a bit where Tucker was squeezing zits and he said to Benny 'You've got a blackhead - on your shoulders'. Shocking stuff nowadays!

Like you say gritty stuff with really terrifying baddies such as Gripper and that one that hospitalizes Tucker. Also nice to see a young Paula Ann Bland who later graduated to Mayfair and went out with Pogo Patterson in real life.

Hopefully new seasons with Mr Bronson, Ro-land and Claire's imaginary affair with My Hardgreaves will be available soon.

While in TV nostalgia mode I recently watched 28 of the 30 'Big Deal' episodes made and apart from the Bobby G themetune it's shit, Princess.

That's a pretty tenuous link!

Good old Bullet Baxter indeed.  Must say that Grange Hill scared the bejaysus out of me, as I started watching it when I was in my last few years in Primary School, and its portrait of Secondary School barbarism was not appealing.  Also sadly rather accurate.  I'd forgotten that it was Stewpot that was the focus of Hicks' attentions - I always remember him as the soppy romantic lead.

I remember Mayfair... (from when I was about 10). I don't know if it's still published. Certainly I couldn't fing any reliable info on the web. Does anybody know?

House of Usher

Oh, there we are: Wikipedia says it's still published, 13 issues per year, under a new publisher since 1990. So now we know.

Mayfair was always my favourite school-era smutty periodical.  I learnt much from their fake-interview Kinsey-lite  'Probe' feature which would prove to be of no bloody use whatsoever in my adult life, since it largely implied that I would be jumped by attractive ladies whenever (literally) my train went into a dark tunnel, or that my brief career as a college lecturer would be enlivened by pretty students in the front row removing their knickers to distract me (6 years of college completely wasted, I can tell you).

There are extensive scanned archives out there on the OHW, wherein you can discover that Nurse Nancy from October 1980 was a damn sight more hirsute than you might have fondly remembered.

grange hill
ground breaking tv.

when they had zamo one of the main characters on the show, go into a spiral of drugs that was also outstanding.
first time it was tackled so honestly and outright on childrens tv.

but Mr Hicks. the nasty PE teacher. that was an episode which ranks of the greatest tv moments.
grange hill. great show.

"The Fruit Machine"? Is that what they called her?? Is it because she paid out at regular intervals? I somehow think the chances of getting three melons in a row are quite unlikely!
