Links / Facebook Dredd Page
24 February, 2013, 11:55:09 AM
I started this page a few weeks ago. Aimed mainly at people who are just getting into Dredd or have fell by the wayside and are looking at getting back into it. I have posted various stuff on it. I don't profess to be an expert and no doubt I might have made a few mistakes. I would love some of you guys to have a look and please contribute. Constructive criticism welcome. I have had about 80 odd likes. Thanks.

General / Sidney Death lives
23 September, 2012, 09:36:00 AM
Was reading the morning papers online this morning and came across an article in the Sunday Mail about Teresa May and the death penalty. I looked at the comments to the story at the bottom of the page and I came across this.........
The indisputable fact is that if you execute a killer, they will never re-offend.

Creative Common / Help, advice.
19 January, 2012, 05:13:42 PM
As some of you may know I work in education. The school I work in specialises in the arts, performing and otherwise. Some of the 6th formers have started a Manga Club. I have tried my hardest to make them see the error of their ways and introduce them to the world of DREDD but to no avail!!!
There are some students who, after I have mentioned and strategically placed lots of Dredd doodles in the classrooms, are very curious about the world of DREDD. Some of them are into Marvel and DC and love drawing these characters all over their folders and books.
I am thinking of starting up a Comic Book Club for these students which will involve them obviously drawing but also giving them a little insight into how a Comic/GRaphic Novel is put together. The ultimate aim is to get these kids introduced to the world of DREDD.
One of the things I am hoping to do after a few weeks is to give them a script for them to draw and turn into a strip. Here's where I am stuck. Could anyone provide a simple script, involving DREDD which would appeal to 11-16 yr olds or even a couple which could reflect the age range. Also has anyone have any ideas of a prize for the winner. Was thinking of getting it printed but have no idea how to go about this.
Any advice and help would be much appreciated.
Simon.

Film & TV / Paradise Lost 1 and 2
15 November, 2011, 07:15:51 PM
Don't know if anyone has seen these two documentaries. It's a case that happened in America in 1993. Three 8 year olds where found murdered in some local woods in West Memphis, Arkansas. The police arrested 3 local teenagers for the crime. These documentaries tell the story. It's fascinating stuff. The 3 lads were released in Aug this year after 18 years in prison, 1 of them on death row and in solitary. Don't want to give anything away but it's documentary film making at its finest IMO. There is going to be a third part which is doing the film festival rounds in AMerica at the min and it will be aired on American TV in Jan.
You can watch these docs online or download them. Sorry I haven't the link.

Having nothing better to do this evening I have been trawling through old threads dating back to 2001 and man wasn't the Scojo guy a fruit loop. At first reading some of the posts I thought he's taking the piss here and winding everyone up but as I read further it dawned on me that this guy actually meant what he said. Some of the exchanges with Jim, Logan and Gordon where brilliant reading. Did anyone ever meet this guy for real? I think if he had had a go at me like he did some people I think I would have pulled his face off if I ever met him!!!
Great entertainment though.
Apologies if this has bought back unpleasantaries for anyone!!

General / Dredd mistakes
10 November, 2011, 11:04:53 PM
Been having a bit of a nostalgia week by reading some selected case files. As you get older you get a different take on the Dredd stuff from yesteryear and I was thinking about some of the stuff that John Wagner probably thinks he shouldn't have written. The most famous being the killing off of Mean Machine in The Judge Child (and come to think of it, the resurrection of Pa and Junior). For me the two things that I wish Wagner had never introduced are Time Travel and the plethora of aliens and alien planets. The latter was fine in the early 80's when 2000ad was aimed at kids of my age in their early teens but in today's Dredd world it just dosnt seem to fit as dosnt the time travel thing. It just seems inconceivable to me that in the next 100 or so years we will be cavorting with hundreds of different alien species and be able to travel in time. The whole Judge Child saga should have been left at the end of Destinys Angels. I always thought that CIty of the Damned was a weak story anyway and I didn't really enjoy it. The dimension jumping thing to was fine when in the Judge Death continuum but when it came to Helter Skelter it just got plain silly(yes I know this wasn't Wagner). Today's Dredd seems a world away from the early stuff I have mentioned and trying to put this early stuff in context with today's Dredd is difficult, but hey that's progression for you.

Went to see this yesterday. Fantastic movie. Gary Oldman will deservedly get an Oscar nomination for this. Very slow paced film but so is the book. Some great performances. I recommend it, but don't take the Mrs as you will prob have to explain the whole movie to her at the end like I did he he.

Suggestions / Books, Apps

I was looking in The Works bookshop yesterday and I found a fantastic DK IRon Man book. It was fantastic, great graphics which are synonymous with DK. Would love to see Rebellion commission one for Dredd. Also when is Rebellion going to produce an App for either the iPhone or iPad?

Other Reviews / Origins/Backlash/Mega City Justice
18 July, 2011, 08:41:04 PM
Well I have just read these three in the above order over the last week. They really go together as one mega graphic novel. They are all equally good as individual graphic novels but reading them one after the other really brings home the central mutant issue. The writing for me is top notch and I have to say that the three stories have become my fav ever Dredd storyline. It has everything for me. The way Wagner has developed the Beeney/Dredd relationship is genius(you get the feeling that one day Wagner will add a massive dose of irony by installing Beeney as Chief Judge). The banter between Dredd and PJ is brilliant especially the ending ("the vote was 4 for and 2 against I was one of the 2") which was pure Dredd. The characterisation of Seinfield is fantastic, a meglomaniac that equals Cal but without the madness.
Overall I would definitely recommend reading these three together.

Other Reviews / The Pit
10 June, 2011, 06:26:11 PM
Whilst i was moving house, unpacking stuff i came across The Pit and instantly stopped what i was doing and read it. It still holds up now as a top notch ass kicking Dredd story. Even Carlos's dodgy computerised colouring does not bring it down in any way. The story flows beautifully as a graphic novel and the writing is excellent. Best bit......."My name is Dredd, you may have heard of me......I'm a stickler" Brilliant.
