From the interview about Hawk the Slayer in Meg #440:

"Upcoming I've Got The Lion & The Eagle for Aftershock, which is a savage war story set in Burma during World War Two with art by PJ Holden, a second series of Jimmy's Bastards, another Punisher mini, more Russian Front war stories with Steve Epping - and something very, very special from Rebellion, something that I think fans of 1970s comics will be very happy about."

He's already done Dan Dare, and I imagine Pat Mills creations like Bill Savage are off the table, so I'm curious.

My money's on a gritty reboot of Dash Decent featuring a backstory in which an honest ex-soldier saves a young Dash from paedophile priests whilst taking violent revenge on his corrupt former commanding officers.

Mine's just arrived and I have say: +100 points for including a wordsearch.

They need to make it a 'Spot the Difference' the word search was way to easy and the boy child and I love doing the Spot the Difference in The Phoenix* together, some of which are devilishly tricky.

This comment on the Prog thread reminded me that I had this. I was once going to do a fully laid-out annual-style puzzle page for the Advent Calendar years ago, but this is about as far as I got.

So if this is what floats your boat, enjoy ... 10 differences, you know the drill.

Website and Forum / Avast issues

My Avast security app is giving me constant pop-ups that say it has blocked access to this site because "one of the issuers of the server certificate has expired". Hasn't really had any effect on functionality, but it's bloody annoying.

Prog / Prog 2212 - Elecrtifying 100 page Xmas Issue!
15 December, 2020, 08:21:08 PM
Wait, I can't be the first to get this can I? Haven't bagged the prog thread for yonks, and 2209 was two weeks late. I'll leave Broodblik to do his usual much appreciated posting of the cover, but the tag-line's not exactly memorable. Does what it says on the tin I suppose.

Judge Dredd: Another fine Noam Chimpsky tale from Ken Niemand and PJ Holden, a heartwarming little Christmas tale.

Strontium Dog Well this will probably have some of the facebook crowd having aneurysms - A tale of Johnny and Wulf without Carlos OR John? It works though - The art channels Star Lord era Ezquerra and the script is crammed with all the gadgets and references you'd expect in a satisfying little tale that does rely heavily on one massive piece of luck. And maybe Wulf's accent gets a little OTT on the final page, but overall I'd give it the thumbs up.

In the year 2020 - awesome montage pin up by Stewart K Moore - how long will it take you to find Stogie? Got most of the references, but help a brother out with these few: (left) the dude with the superhero mask punching the Sov mek...the helmeted guy seen from the back, just below Slaine's right hand ... and are those anything other than anonymous barbarians that Slaine's flinging off his back?

Carlos Pino article .. not read yet

Survival Geeks. An epilogue with a huge dollop of awwwwwww.

Letters - I defer to my honourable colleague for fuller reviews, but Ming's Lego looks amazing and star letter is from that bloke from round 'ere that can't spell Steve.

Visions of Deadworld - nice creepy one off. Not as gut droppingly chilling as some, quite sweet really.

That's all, had to take a break to rest the thrill circuits. Part 2 to follow - Proteus Vex and Hershey may have to wait till I've done a catch-up  read, but Slaine looks lush (they always do though .. but then words), there's an old-skool Time Twister/Tharg tale and an interesting looking new Durham Red.

Classifieds / WANTED: Nikolai Dante vol.6
29 August, 2020, 12:12:59 AM
Okay, so I'm an idiot.

When the Ultimate 2000ad collection launched I thought I don't want to pay for stuff I've got, I'll just cherry pick the volumes I want, like the complete Dante for example. I chuckled from a distance at the endless customer service woes, and after v.4 I pre-ordered the rest of the Dante books from Forbidden Planet and sat back smugly.

Book 5 arrived fine, then I vaguely recall an email about a billing issue that I forgot to follow up on ....turns out my card had expired and all the orders were cancelled. Long story short, laziness, poor memory and general fuckwittedness on my part means that I am only now trying to sort this out. FP still have v.8, and I've just paid over the odds for v.7 on eBay, but I can't find v.6 for sale. My web-fu is weak though , meaning I just searched for "nikolai dante vol6" on google and eBay.

If anyone has one for sale, or can point me to a seller, I will build statues in your honour.

Website and Forum / What's up with the NEW tags?
21 July, 2020, 04:52:29 PM
I tend to navigate from the Active Topics page, which helpfully tells me which topics have been updated since I last looked, but this function seems to be erratic at best recently - They don't disappear when you have looked at the topic, so each time I refresh I think there are new replies, but there aren't. They do update eventually, which suggests someone is manually refreshing several times a day at their end? I dunno, but it's irksome.

Film & TV / Locke & Key
08 February, 2020, 08:29:39 PM
I'd forgotten this was in the pipeline, but it's just landed on Netflix today - there was no thread, so I thought I'd kick one off

I'm a huge fan of the books, as I know are many of you,and I'm nervous. I know nothing about this going into it, if I saw a trailer I've forgotten it, and I'm just about to dive in, so fingers crossed...

Help! / Dumb IT question
13 July, 2019, 09:39:48 PM
It's about SD vs HD downloads of films and telly. If you're only ever going to be watching on sub-SD platforms (eg laptop) is is it still better to download the best quality available, or is it in any way better to download the SD version (beyond download times/file sizes). What I mean is, is it like trying to watch 3D tv on an old CRT telly?

Reason I ask is that I was poised to purchase a movie on Amazon that I missed at the cinema but doesn't quite warrant the shelf space for a DVD, and the price was identical for SD and HD - was about to click HD and wondered, is this going to look shit if I don't watch it on a HD device?

(And don't get me started on that f***g BBC iplayer app - sepadate windpws for every stage, downlaod speeds taht take longer than the actual shows, even in SD, and then the bastard refuses to play them - I've still not seen the last 2 episodes of Years and Years - they're there, they just won't bloody play! .... sorry, rant over)

Am I being thick or can you advise?

Roy of the Rovers tackles women's football in World Cup comic

It will be written by children's author Tom Palmer, but the artist isn't credited - Neil Googe perhaps?

Anyone been to one of these or planning to go this year? Any good? I believe they're usually at a holiday camp in Wales, but they have relocated and split into two as the camp is being refurbished.

I've been offered a free ticket to the Sheffield one (just £11 booking fee) and couldn't say npo at that price. Seems quite expensive at full price. Rather odd to do Fri-Sat rather than Sat-Sun (need to book a day off work).

Why do certain threads not allow a post to be edited, even within the strict time-limit that others do?

Is this a conscious decision or a glitch?

My home PC is old and running a pirated copy of windows 7 that hasn't updated for years - crashes and slow performance are just getting intolerable, the replacment power-pack (after a spectacular explosion one day!) that won't fit in the chassis is precariously propped up next to the open side, and the fan sounds like a blender - basically it's time to take it out back and shoot it.

I'm trying to buy a new one but the technical specs bewilder me. It seems like to get the best processing speeds and graphics, I should choose a "gaming" PC, but I don't do that much gaming - are these also best for streaming TV and music, not to mention awesome comic art?

I found two ACER models that are almost identical in every respect apart from the below:

What would the practical difference be between higher HARD DRIVE CAPACITY versus higher GRAPHICS MEMORY CAPACITY? The one on the right is £100 more.

Prog / Prog 2012 - Gone to Texas
24 December, 2016, 12:03:34 PM

So is it just me who's got their prog so far?

Intriguing opener for Dredd as he tracks a perp to Texas City, but there's bound to be more to it than that. Rumblings of discontent in the TC justice dept at the current status quo, but it's fairly clear that the rank and file have no idea what Oswin was actually up to. Fabulous artwork by Tiernen Trevallion.

Kingmaker hasn't really grabbed me yet, but the mix of high fantasy and hard SF is an interesting idea. I'll reserve judgement for a while, but I'm not hating it.

The Order was never really a favourite of mine, but again, it's eminently readable.

I'm really enjoying Hope for the Future - I'm not familiar with Guy Adams or Jimmy Broxton but they're making a good fist of this noir-magic thriller.

Kingdom is just sublime - It's Gene and Leezee vs the world. The great doggy names keep coming - "Seizer" made me smile, and I've only just got "Major Canis"

All in all, Tharg steers us into 2017 with a solid collection of thrills. Happy New Year!

Help! / Unwanted texts
03 November, 2016, 02:47:52 PM
I've just discover I've been charged 5 x 33p for text messages I have no knowledge of. I don't know the number (##### ######) and cannot find any texts to or from that number.  Anyone know how I can block this number on an iPhone?

Film & TV / Class - Dr Who spin-off
25 October, 2016, 09:28:47 AM
Anyone seen this yet on BBC3 online?? It's aimed at teens, so basically it's Sarah Jane Adventures crossed with Buffy. The set up is almost identical - a teacher plus a gang of precocious multiracial kids, including one who's an alien, protect Coal Hill School from beasties that come through an inconvenient hellmouth rift in space/time.

I've watched the first two and it's pretty gruesome - one poor lad has his girlfriend in ep1 and a dinnerlady in ep2 literally massacred in front of him, showering him in gore. People get burned to ashes or skinned alive - you've never get this on CBBC!

Best thing about it is the humour provided by Katherine Kelly as Miss Quill, who's a sarcastic and cynical alien teacher who the Doctor is forcing to protect the young alien prince - her encounter with an Ofsted robot in the 2nd epiodse is priceless.

One thing occurred to me - the Doctor tells them that repeated interference has created a time-rift at Coal Hill - so basically everybody who dies in this series is the Doctor's fault. He's the one that keeps coming back to that school!

General / Renewal help!
12 September, 2016, 07:55:42 PM
Had an e-mail saying Rebellion can't auto-renew my subs because payment details are wrong (I lost my card and replaced it during the last year)

Trouble is I can't find anywhere on the website to do this. If I click on "My account" >>>> "Edit account information" it only allows me to change my name or phone number, if I click in to the subscription details it says "card type: DELTA and there's an orange box saying ATTENTION REQUIRED - this box looks like a clickable button but doesn't do anything.

Spoke to Denise (She hasn't gone just yet!) but she can't get into the payment section from her end and take card details over the phone.

I've mailed subscriptions but no reply yet and I'm not sure if I'm even covered for this week's prog.

Off Topic / i-phone help
04 January, 2016, 08:05:45 PM
Decided to join the 21st century and get me a smartphone as my old one keeps switching itself off for no reason and doesn't do clever things like everyone else's phone.
Against my better judgement I was persuaded to get an i-phone5s because I use an i-pod for my music and was told transferring it would be easy.

Soon as I connected it however, my PC tells me that I need to download a newer version of i-tunes - I did this and have  lost 90% of my music (it has only retained songs purchased through the i-tunes store, so I'm having to re-import everything else including all the CDs I ripped - massive pain in the arse).

It has also deleted all my playlists - now these are still on my i-pod classic and i-pod nano (as are all my missing tunes) but I can't work out how to import them back into i-tunes. The apple support centre points me towards programs such as ipod2PC, but these all cost money - is there an easy free way?

I've really no idea what I'm doing with this phone - any recommendations for easy idiot-proof starter guides?

Off Topic / When did you start KEEPING your comics?
11 April, 2015, 02:27:28 AM
I'm curious as to when you stopped reading comics and chucking them away, and actually started saving them up.

Most, if not all grown-up comic readers on here, would have been reading comics as a kid. We all went from the Beano/Dandy to Krazy/Whizzer & chips, through to 2000AD and Marvel comics. But all those Beanos got read and chucked, at least in my house.

For me it was 20000ad that made  me incapable of just throwing the thing away after I'd read it - I kinda snuck it past my folks - They were always generous with allowing us comics and magazines on the  weekly newsagent's bill. I was allowed 3 comics , and I remember ditching Whizzer & Chips n in favour of 2000ad.

I'm not sure what it was that made me hang on to these comics (which in those days were considered as disposable as newspapers), but 20 years later, My mum was nagging me to move all the hundreds of progs in her loft!
