I've got my FCBD prog... I've seen the advert... come on Planet Replicas, update your website!

Here's an interesting advert from inside this very Freebie!

If tyhey are ging to go direct from a piece of art, I'd love to see the cover of the 1979(?) Summer Special for McM... but anything will be a must buy!

I saw a sneaky peek of the advert at LSCC and freaked! That's one of my all time favourite McMahon Dredds there. A definite buy for me!

Thank you Planet Replicas!

I think the idea was to announce it (or sneak previewing what they're doing) in the Free Comic Book Day prog, which is why it isn't on their website.

My understanding is that they're going to be creating the image shown as a statue.

Though personally I'd like them to put some joints in it and also make an action figure  ;)

I don't normally buy statues but I really want these. It's a great idea. This is the reason I'm still freelancing for a British newspaper: so I have some British pounds stashed away for a rainy (thrill-powered) day!

I cannot wait to buy these.

The ad says "Find out more about this stunning range by visiting www.planetreplicas.com", which is pretty clear.

Perhaps it's just because it's the weekend and we'll see something on Monday.  Otherwise it's rather odd to expressly direct people to your website for information and then leave them to draw a blank when they get there.

They have been sneaking bits of the 3D base model on their newsletter.

E.g.

Yes, I noticed in the last one they said the first prototype would go on show at Comic Con.  It seems a bit contradictory to the ad in the FCBD prog, which says you can see details on their website as of now.  Perhaps the dates slipped, but it does seem their marketing effort is a little confused.

As someone online is fond of saying - Oh myyy!

But kudos to PR for choosing to kick off proceedings with a 'McMahon'.

An 'Ezquerra' circa the Apocalypse War, would be just as awesome - and desirable, but more than happy with this one.

It's an interesting point - what's more marketable - a b/w model or something coloured up, and if so do you go with the yellow/gold elbow/knee pads of that era, or stick with the green ones?

I always thought the Batman Black & White Mignola statue did a great job of 3D-ising his iconic chunky 2D style

So it can be done, can't wait to see it!

A bit more from their FB page.

"Thanks for all the comments on the Statue Range!

Being 1/10th scale the price should be very fair for everyone.

We intend to do as many artists of Dredd as possible, alternating between releases of other great 2000 AD characters...

One other sweetener for everyone- A quantity of preorders made before release will end up with a Signed, Ltd Edition print of the statue artwork by the relevant artist too*

*Depending on Artists availability,naturally"

Lots of Dredd statues, nice! I'll have a row of those at the front of the display before you know it. Right, I'm off to look for some sort of stepped display thing now, so every character is seen, rather than just the heads of all those behind the front row.

I like the idea of a McMahon statue in the classic big boots early-eighties styling but I would be even more interested in a skinny, small shoulder pads 1977-era Dredd.

Nice. It looks a little 'soft' to me - I was imaging a more chiselled, angular look, but maybe that's because it's still wip or due to the limitations of making something that works in 3d.

Title: Re: Planet Replicas - the Artists Collection
Post by: Steve Green on 05 July, 2014, 02:38:36 PM
I guess it depends on the popularity of the artist.

Dredd sells, but it would be nice to see a Carlos Strontium Dog - or if they continue with Dredd, maybe a 'moment in Dredd' would be cool.

An Apocalypse War era Dredd with a stub-gun after Carlos, or a sculpt of the Gaze into the fist of Dredd panel maybe? Flying fragments would be a bit tricky though.

Hmf. More put out by the pic of the Mk1 Lawgiver for $135 including shipping. That's £80. In the UK, it's £125 plus shipping. Even if you add UK VAT onto that dollar price, it's still only £96 with included shipping. :-(

(Like the look of the McMahon figure, though...)

Cheers

A similar question came up on the PR facebook page, and there was (from what I remember) a pretty reasonable explanation about the prices. I can't find the post though.

I thought it might have been that they're all shipped from the UK, so the UK shipping is less, but the product is priced higher and vice versa for the US, but I don't think that was the reason.

I don't think it's been stated yet.

Some people have asked for b/w versions, others an unpainted one so they can paint it themselves.

Black and White avoids a few issues from that era, like the yellow/gold elbow/kneepads, and it's also a Black and White piece that it's based on.

That figure - I can't call it a 'statue' * - is the first of its kind that I don't actively hate. Which amazes me. It's a stunning, um, item.

* Looked up 'statue' out of curiosity, and due to its size, what you have there is a statuette or figurine.

Title: Re: Planet Replicas - the Artists Collection

I think it's the lack of an energetic pose which I like quite a lot. Looks solid and immovable, just like a classic Mick McMahon Dredd. He could have a herd of charging T-Rex, or a full scale riot going on behind him.

I can image a Carlos Ezquerra 'Johnny Alpha' statue, doing the simple 'holding up a warrant pad pose' as a good companion.

And then making up some kind of luxury oversized chess set from all the 2000AD characters.

;)

My views on the four:

Unpainted - hope not, I'd have to pay someone less kak-handed than me to paint it properly.
Full colour - I'm not agin the idea, but I didn't like this one at all. I'm guessing that the actual paint job would be far more subtle, but it was just too bright and plasticky in this version.
Grey - Like it. like it a lot.
B / W - I know some people really didn't like this one, but I loved it! Pure McMahon inking!

I'd certainly buy 3 or 4, and could probably be talked into the others tbh - it is a lovely sculpt.
Title: Re: Planet Replicas - the Artists Collection
Post by: Steve Green on 17 November, 2014, 08:21:08 PM
I think the unpainted one was just off the back of a couple of comments made from people who had specific ideas of what they'd like - just makes it easier for them.

The grey and b/w versions seemed to be the most popular.

I really like the B&W painted one-it's the only one that actually looks like McMahon drew it. As I said earlier in the thread, Neca released Ninja Turtles figures a few years ago in full colour and black and white in the same style-I got a set of the colour ones, but never managed to get the black and white ones. I'm gutted about that on a daily basis.
