News / 100 months - Brighton Waterstones with Pat Mills
08 November, 2010, 12:35:27 PM
'To me, Johnny Hicklenton is the Jimi Hendrix of British comics.'- Pat Mills

A CELEBRATION OF THE LIFE AND WORK OF JOHN HICKLENTON 1967-2010
on the publication of his final graphic novel 100 MONTHS with PAT MILLS, CLINT LANGLEY and ADAM LAVIS

Thursday 18 November     7.15 pm   Waterstone's, BRIGHTON

'I was lucky enough to have Johnny Hicklenton draw my first published story, and I knew from the start that his was a unique and powerful vision.  100 MONTHS is a heartbreaking final vision: one man going head to head with death, and with Death, and with life.  I felt lucky to be allowed to read it and fortunate that Johnny made it for us before he left.  It lingers and it haunts, and, ultimately, affirms.'  -  NEIL GAIMAN

For fans of 2000AD and Judge Dredd, Brighton-based cartoonist Johnny Hicklenton needs no introduction.  He was one of Britain's greatest comic book artists, famous for the brutal, visceral draughtsmanship he brought to his craft.  Published on 18 November, 100 MONTHS is Johnny's final graphic novel, a fantastically dark, apocalyptic fable, warning that we only have only 100 months left to save the planet.  Johnny took his own life with the assistance of Dignitas in Switzerland on 19 March 2010 following a heroic ten-year struggle with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis. This event celebrates his life and his uniquely dark and powerful vision, with fellow cartoonists Pat Mills and Clint Langley and Adam Lavis of Animal Monday, director of the film 'Here's Johnny' winner of two Grierson awards for best documentary.

Waterstone's, 71-74 North Street, BRIGHTON.   TICKETS £2    Enquiries tel 0843 290 8181.
100 MONTHS is published by Cutting Edge, hardback £19.99
Press enquiries to: Margot Weale        margot.weale@ntlworld.com

Here is the link, please send it to as many people as possible.

Johnny is working on some stuff at the moment, but a lot of the time he's not able to do a lot,  for those who have watched the doc you would have seen that he joined dignitas and has dates in place,  which is why I want to do this for him. I can't help ease the pain, but by showing him how much people care,  it won't cure the MS but will hopefully make a day or two easier.

Many thanks again

Thanks so much everyone

The voting goes live on the 5th, I've been searching all over the broadcast site to see where it's going to be, but nothing yet, as soon as I see it I'll post it here and also on the facebook group "Here's Johnny for a CDN award" .

Lets hope we get lots of people to vote, Johnny will be so proud he's the main reason we're doing it and why we made the documentary in the first place,  he's really poorly at the moment and I know it'll remind him how many people care.

Thanks again

Ah thank you very much for your comments,  Johnny will be very touched.
As soon as we get the link for voting we're put it up here,  any facebookers out there I've started a group called "Here's Johnny for a CDN award" where there's lots of articles and where i'm hoping lots of people can forward on the links or change statues for a while.

Thanks again

Hey,

We haven't heard that it's back on,  it's available to buy or watch a trailer at www.heresjohnnyfilm.com ,  The DVD is pretty amazing, it's a full artwork cover and all individually signed by Johnny.

Hopefully if it does win (fingers crossed) they'll put it on again, it's been on More 4 twice and was avaialble on 4 on demand, it might be available to download in their main history, but think the free download is taken down a month after transmission.

Many thanks for your support!

Hello all

We've just found out that Here's Johnny has been nominated by Channel 4 for a cultural diversity network award.  It's a very big award and would mean a lot to the hero that is Johnny Hicklenton.  Voting takes place from the 5th of November on broadcast now website and would only take a couple of minutes out of your day!!

For those who didn't get to see it, Here's Johnny is an award winning documentary that follows Grpahic artist John Hicklenton over a 7 yr period as he deals with being diagnosed with MS, and the difficulties he faces with the prospect of losing his use of hands and having to give up his amazing work.

Johnny is very involved in the documentary and he would be the person receiving the award. It would mean a lot to him to win this award as he's very poorly at the moment, and I'm sure it would certainly make him very happy.

Please please please spread the word for people to vote and vote yourself!

Many thanks

Alex

Quote from: "LARF"Alex - is this going to be repeated, I forgot to Sky+ it last night

You can see it on 4 on demand, or limited edition DVD's are for sale from http://www.heresjohnnyfilm.com

Think the link for the 4on demand is on a post in this thread.

I contacted More4 to see if they were planning on repeating it, and more specifically with subtitles, and they got back to me saying that they had no plans to repeat it at all in the foreseeable.

Does the DVD happen to have subs for us deaffos?

Currently there isn't a DVD with subtitles, sorry. I'll have a think and see if there's a way around it? If anyone who has Sky+ and recorded it, can you watch it and turn subtitles on?

Lets hope they change their minds and repeat it!

Quote from: "peterwolf"I wonder if John is willing to do commissions if asked ? Has he ever done commissions for anyone here ?

I cant watch as i cant get More 4.

You can watch it on 4 on demand, http://www.channel4.com/video/brandless ... res-johnny

He's done commissions in the past, but it's a lot of work, he's not saying he'll never do them again, but not openly taking them.

For some of his artwork check out www.heresjohnnyfilm.com on the buy now section, there's some brill pieces and all will be personally signed by the man himself. There limited edition only 100 being made, each will be numbered and there's 5 different ones to choose from.

Enjoy!!
