Title: Objet de désir
Post by: Link Prime on 27 September, 2018, 12:42:55 PM
Now I've hit my 40's I find I'm starting to curb my nerdy ways.
The monthly comic pull list is a shell of its former glut.
No longer is a TV show or film given the benefit of the doubt simply because of the genre.
The Loot Crate subscription has long been cancelled.
Video game 'day one' purchases are no longer a concern at all.

No doubt finances are a factor here (I will be paying two mortgages until at least early 2019), but definitely a change in attitude too.

And yet. And yet.
There is a certain compulsion that draws me towards random purchases of otherwise useless tat.
It may end up gathering dust on a shelf. It may end up in a drawer, but Grud help me- I have to have it.

Anyone else afflicted by this seemingly intermittent bout of pure madness?

Recent items on my list of curios:

- Playmobil 'Stay Puft Marshmallow Man'. Status: Purchased. Already in a drawer.
- Lego City Pizza Van. Status: Purchased. Built, but already packed away with Lego collection.
- 'Twinkie the Kid' Funko Pop. Status: Ordered from Zavvi.
- Garbage Pail Kids "Oh the Horror-ible" card set. Status: Purchased on Ebay and in the post. NB- Postage was twice the cost of the cards.
- Super Mario Brothers pajamas by Pennys. Status: worn to bed last night.
- Classic Twilight Zone (black and white) action figures. Status: Looking online for a price that will allow me to sleep at night.

I just subscribed to that Warhammer Conquest magazine, and it's bloody weekly. I don't even have a sub for the Prog. Or a proper job.

This insanity is apparently inherited from my father: recent visit to his attic revealed entire runs of tank, plane and battleship partworks,  all still in the packaging.

I almost got sucked into that one TB.......picked up the first 3 issues (in fact, several issue 1's) and i'm happily painting ultra marines, but at £8 a pop for another 77 weeks.....well, my marines had to fall back to a safe distance!

Doubt I'll be able to last the full course,  but I've assembled and painted more minis this past month than anytime in the past 30 years,  so I wasn't prepared to stop for a couple of months yet!  There's something freeing about the weekly schedule, and the fact I don't really care about 40K - I'm actively looking forward to a second crack at Plague Marines in a few weeks.

I'm much the same....just enjoying doing some painting to be honest, seeing if I can get better on each subsequent marine. It's been fun.

When I finish one, it gets passed on to my son to gather dust......then on with the next! When I'm happy with one, I'll keep it.

Until that day (that will never come).......onwards!

Anyone else afflicted by this seemingly intermittent bout of pure madness?

Ab-so-bloody-lutely.

I recently spent over £100 on a board game I really can't get enough people to play.

I can't walk into a bookshop without coming out with something. I have too many books as is.

I have a horrible affliction of buying minis I don't even have games for.  ::)

I've the habit of buying stuff for my kids. (Doom board game, Starcraft Risk).

I have made a conscious effort to buy less stuff. It's like eating sweets. The craving doesn't go away, but if you skip one, then your butterfly attention flits to the next.

But do still buy books faster than I read them. I've come to terms with that one now. Anyone who doesn't is just weird.

Also Batgirl in Lego form. My kids got the discarded minifigs created by my search for plastic variations on Babs.

My fears as well.  Here's a thought though -  a gang of us here could use Fantasy Grounds (or similar) to play the Dredd RPG.  I know folk here have played Dredd games online before a good bit,  but it looks likely that at least one if the virtual tabletop services will support WOIN, which would simplify things.

And now I think of it,  there are simpler free platforms that you could use for Strontium Dog.

I've never been one for buying plastic tat and have largely curbed my physical media buying habits - I haven't bought a physical movie/book/comic in years, and now own so many board games I am getting rid of some rather than buying more. My main vices these days are food & drink (I keep a small cocktail bar) and things like camping/hiking equipment and camera gear. I own far too many cameras and will spend an inordinate amount of money 'upgrading' various bits of camping gear in order to shave a few grams off my trail pack weight, which I will keep doing knowing full well how silly it is.

In terms of geek stuff, I will still occasionally get that 'gotta have it' feeling. Recent examples are the new Mega Drive Mini, that funky looking Playdate boutique handheld console and that Folio Society edition of A Game of Thrones... However generally I'm fairly good at resisting the temptation, and usually find that after a few months have passed I didn't actually want that thing as much as I thought at the time.

I can also be a bit of a sucker for backing cool stuff I see on Kickstarter, but generally if I take a step back and think to myself 'would I buy this if it were available to buy right now?' the answer is usually 'no'.

The gear is so much fun. I never thought I'd be the kind of person that owns hatchets (plural) and who has conversations about the relative merits of different kinds of stove fuel, but living in the Pacific Northwest does weird things to you.

Jeez that's a big lump of plastic for £200 - do you buy it as an investment in the hope it will increase in value? I doubt it will ever be played with at that price.

I still regret not buying a full size Tintin Arumbaya Fetish in damaged/repaired state. It was lovely and only £200 or so...

I have more books than I will ever read - I do temper the habit somewhat by getting them mostly from the Linwood Cancer Research shop. Mostly autobiographies and biographies - On Rob Lowe just now after recently finishing Terry-Thomas. Read 3 each of Kenneth Williams and Brian Clough!

I keep buying old CRT TVs from Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree.
I play lots of retro games so I do have a use for one or two of them at least. The trouble is, when a nice one pops up I just can't turn it down. I imagine them going to landfill and I think of a time in the not-too-distant future when they become impossible to get hold of.
They're very heavy and take lots of space to store so I really need to find good homes for them.

During my year long (now finished) 40th Birthday celebration I indulged myself in a couple of G1 Transformers.

I have Trypticon which I managed to snag for £50, brand new. He normally retails at around £150. He's a base and a massive Dinosaur and will be displayed as the latter.

The second wave of seekers (Jet planes) - Dirge, Ramjet and Thrust. They're re-releases of original versions, metal parts an' all. £45 quid odd as I recall.

The mighty Optimus Prime. He's almost as tall as Trypticon and his chest opens revealing the Matrix.

For the future I've been eyeing up a complete collection of Dinobots and Death's Head (Transformers Marvel version.

Cheers

Theres no official TF M:UK Deaths Head figure (green, as he should be) but theres a few smaller scale blue versions that fit in nicely, I have the Marvel Infinite figure of him and it's squares up alright.

There's also this amazing 3rd part retool of a Cyclonus figures which looks absolutely brilliant!

I've purchased all the Dinobots recently (not all at the same time). I went for the Power of the Primes versions which are a nice homage to the G1's though far from perfect. I miss the metallic finish of the G1s and a couple look a bit unfinished in dinosaur mode, suggesting the emphasis in on the humanoid form. They still look pretty good  though.

I have them all aside from Slag* who is on his way from Japan.

One thing that's a bit of a pain is the lack of the classic weapons. I've turned to 3rd part for that, but it gets a bit ridiculous with the extra expense. (Grimlock should have a double barrel rifle and a red sword though, not two feet shaped** weapons.) The others either have a rifle or a sword but not both like the G1 versions (although there are little plastic pistol things embedded in their 'armour/Volcanicus's hands', those are mainly placeholders for other potps gimmicks.

*Actually this version is called 'Slug'. Apparently the Americans found out the other meaning of the word we have in 'the old country'.  He'll always be Slag to me though.

** Cos they are the feet of Volcanicus. Yep these dinobots combine, although I didn't primarily get them for that... like that will stop me.

Oh god, I am so guilty of buying random crap it's unreal.  That's aside from the ever growing book pile I just don't have time to read.

Here's a quick breakdown of some of my stuff JUST THIS MONTH:

ED-209 model - it is frikkin enormous!  Too big to fit in a normal freestanding bookshelf.  Full poseable too.  Oh god, it's beautiful.  One of my all-time fave robot bad guys ever.

Carved Tibetan Skull replica - again, a thing of beauty.  here's a link to the seller on Etsy.  His museum quality replica skulls are amazing.

EDIT:  This isn't the one, but close.  The one I have includes full jaw and teeth.  This pic doesn't do it justice:

https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/606119432/tibetan-hand-carved-skull-replica?ref=shop_home_active_30

Chimpanzee skull replica - see above.

APEMAN wildlife camera trap - bought this so me and the lass could get a good look at the birds and squirrels that frequently raid the feeders at the bottom of the garden.  Plus it has IR, and have already caught a couple of nighttime prowling cats on it.

Alice in Wonderland pop-up book - I bloody love pop-up books!  The best I own are by Matthew Reinhardt, which are packed with pop-up goodness.  he's a master of the paper folding craft.  This one is very close to his level of genius.  I thoroughly recommend it if you are in any way interested in the art of folding cardboard.  Plus it's a almost half price here (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Alices-Adventures-Wonderland-Pop-up-Book/dp/0689837593/ref=pd_sbs_14_1/257-4154312-6881257?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=0689837593&pd_rd_r=a8cf1242-964a-11e9-896a-e72576fa63c5&pd_rd_w=K4pMI&pd_rd_wg=kPzEI&pf_rd_p=18edf98b-139a-41ee-bb40-d725dd59d1d3&pf_rd_r=ZDG4MAGBZJGADEEK899H&psc=1&refRID=ZDG4MAGBZJGADEEK899H).

I'm sure there's more.  It has to be said, I'm usually more restrained than this, but I had a bonus in work this month and went to town a bit.  I usually limit myself to one major frivolity a month.

Holy shit! I've been eyeing various hominin skulls with greed over the past few months, and had no idea others felt the same. My dream is a nice line of them- from A. afarensis up to H. neanderthalensis, on pedestals in my hallway (I don't really have a hallway) under little glass domes. Sigh.

That one is beautiful.

Recently have been looking for a way to get as much productive writing done away from the laptop a. Because of pesky distractions, we've all been there and b. Eye strain, been getting a bad case of it lately.
Looks to be word processors are making a comeback but at £700 a pop thats way off the table, so after a bit of research settled on a relic from my school days, the Alphasmart Neo 2. Like new cost me £60 (plus import grumble grumble) but for a 10+ year old piece of kit works a dream. Solid, solid investment.

I'll have to dig out my original (I doubt the electrics would still work though).  Also have Zoidzilla somewhere.  My favourite one is probably still my first though - the clockwork Spiderzoid.

It truly is a thing of beauty and something I would never believe would happen, could happen, at CRITERION of all labels, only five years ago.

Authetic replica M41 Pulse Rifle NERF gun (painted in cheerful colours).

Not sure what my favourite thing about this is: the working ammo counter, or the fact as well as normal dart 'bullets' it also has massive nerf darts in the grenade launcher.
My least favourite thing about it? £100.
