Title: "Doom, the original and the best"
Post by: Art on 10 January, 2003, 04:19:59 PM
Lies! All lies!

Wolfesntein 3D was the original and the best, Doom was some over complicated johnny-come-lately with all kinds of useless bells and whistles like the concept of "up" and "down" and angles other than 90%. Pah! To that I say. Pah!

Even better, Wolfenstein had a very quick and easy to use level editor, which doesn't require a degree in geekdom to use, so if for any strange reason you want to put together a huge level in the shape of a swastika, or Luton Arndale center, or a long tunnel level with limited ammunition and lots of dogs (so you have to stab all the dogs with the knife! Ha ha!) then you can. You know, if for any reason you want to do that.

You couldn't look up or down in Doom.
Title: Re: Re:
Post by: Art on 10 January, 2003, 04:32:06 PM
Yeah, but objects could be "up" or "down" in relation to you.

You just don't get character design like this anymore...

gotta agree really.  wolfenstein was absolutely brilliant and also responsible for me missing most of my mid teens.......

Wolf 3D was definitely brilliant, my only regret is that I only had the demo rather than the full game so I could only play 2 levels & couldn't make any dog-tunnels (although that sounds like a wonderful idea for a game!)

Love the Wolfenstein 3-D picture, arthur.  But I didn't realise that all the Nazis in the game were actually Mini-Me type midgets...

And, heading off another potential "ha ha ha, Rennie you fool, you don't know anything about birdie lie detectors!" type situation, yes, I know that Wolfie came before Doom.  But Doom's better, and it reads better in the line, and oit nly has four letters while 'Castle Wolfenstein' takes up far too much room in a speech balloon.

Oh, and has anyone seen the Resident Evil movie?  Saw the DVD this week - definitely goes in my 'guilty pleasures' list, since I thought it was great fun.

I prefer Doom, just coz I played it first, and how I played it...  I wasted a LOT of time on it(except it doesn't feel wasted).  Last time I played I did all of the scenarios with just one life (per scenario, not sure if I managed the end scenarion on one of the Doom 95 editions).  being old I sort of got lost off with Quake II and all of that looking up and down nonsense.  All I needed was the wind in my hair (shift button down) a rocket launcher in my hand and I was in heaven.

I too watched the Resident Evil movie last week, it was okay, I did quite enjoy it (helped by lovely lovely scantily clad Mila), but there wasn't much to it.  Most of the people who really enjoyed it seemed to have played the game.  Though I've heard that shouldn't effect the experience, I think it might.  Worth a watch though, but no 28 days later...

Heh. I bet you don't even know the name of the engine in Dredds bike. And they hold that gun wrong in Res Evil...

Actually, I found Res Evil extremely fun to watch as it was filmed, in its entirety, in the style of a computer game cut scene. Now, there's  a bunch of people who will argue that computer game games are approaching cinema in terms of narrative storytelling, and res Evil is proof that whilst this may be sort-of true, it?s a very weird and disjointed kind of cinema.

>>Heh. I bet you don't even know the name of the engine in Dredds bike.

I'll bet you John Wagner doesn't either.  And I bet he cares even less than I do.

>>Actually, I found Res Evil extremely fun to watch as it was filmed, in its entirety, in the style of a computer game cut scene. Now, there's a bunch of people who will argue that computer game games are approaching cinema in terms of narrative storytelling

Well, I'm currently labouring through the 5th draft of the cut-scene script of the game I'm working on, so, yes, it definitely feels pretty 'cinematic', at least in terms of producer involvement.

"We love it, but we've changed our minds about the basic plot we gave you, so could you..."

"We love it, but we've just signed up Movie Actor A to play Character X, so could you rewrite it and make his role twice as important?"

"We love it, but we've just cut two of the levels and changed some of the others, so could you..."

AAAAAGH!

>>and res Evil is proof that whilst this may be sort-of true, it?s a very weird and disjointed kind of cinema.

That's true.  There were several scenes jumps where I got a bit lost and felt something had been left on the editing room floor.

However, some random thoughts occur to me about it-

I don't care how impractical it is for a commando mission, but having Mila Jolivitch running about in that skimpy little red dress number sure worked for me.

'Umbrella' is a very silly name for a Big Evil World-Controlling Multi-National Corporation.  'EvilCorp' - that's what I'd have called it, yeah.

Something about the career of director Paul Anderson, which I can't be bothered articulating.

I always preferred Doom on the Playstation. It took me years to get into the keyboard style of FPS on a PC. Best thing about Doom was the sound. Very very scary once you've played for a few hours. And then that baby screaming!! *shudder*

Don't think it's been topped for atmos except for Silent Hill.

Always worked for me, though still not quite as good as the outfits in Fifth Element

Coulda been worse, could have been 'Kagool'.

The Quake demo was the fourth dimention sucker for me... it took me a looooooooong time to work out how to complete it on it's hardest setting

And don't get me started on the original version of Civilsation. Goodbye sleep. Goodbye life. Goodbye sanity.

Gordon's bit of dialogue mentioning Doom actually made me dig the game out and start playing it again. My daughter's well and truley hooked as well, as it's simple enough for her to play, but she still gets to blow nasties away with a shotgun.

Oh. And what makes it even better is that I found *this*...

Link: It's Doom....with 3D models!

I've not played it much, but it looks ok. I never liked any of the Quakes much. Unreal Tournament is better I reckon, although the multiplayer mode is really bad with 4 players. Quake 3 looks like it handles multiplayer better, but doesn't look as good a game as Unreal T.

This fish is currently having enormous fun with Red Faction 2, which is a bit like Doom but has cooler weapons.

Red Faction had the fantastic cool geomod technology that let you blow holes in almost any object (doors, walls, etc), except for ones which the map designers have decided you couldn't - which turned out to be almost all of them, thus rendering the whole thing somewhat disappointing and pointless. I hope Red faction II does better.

The best bit in this respect was when they were being chased by the zombies, and they have to climb up a ladder, or something.  She's dangling in her skimpy dress above the zombies, and they're directly beneath her, looking straight up and trying to grab her.

Those poor guys playing the zombies....it must have been hell for them, that scene.  I wonder how many takes it took for themn to finally get it right?

Dozens, I imagine, and it probably bought out the perfectionist in all the zombies - "Sorry, we're going to have to do that again, I, erm, think I blinked at the wrong moment, or something".

Ahhh these games definately take their toll.  All that talk of resident evil, i remember when my juve was playing it night & day geek stylee (as you do ) & i walked in the room once, he screamed, jumped 5 feet in the air & reached for the heavy artilary... i figure it wasn't Mila he mistook me for. we reached the joint conclusion at that point that he should get out more.

Has anyone mentioned UNREAL yet. I just love it.

I can't get Quake III to play on my PC, some sort of graphics card malarky (even though I have a shit hot card), I'm sure it's just a case of 'can't be arsed to sort it out' syndrome.

Also, if anyone has UNREAL 2003 I'd really like a copy of it.

Huzzah! Just bought a new PC and had a fun week playing Fallout 2, which I've had for years and never finished as it always crashed on the old PC. Next stop, Fallout Tactics.

Anyone think that Big Dave would be a good choice for Rebellion's next FPS?

Anonymous middle-eastern soldiers, Saddam, Love-guns, aerial invasions without parachutes...
and lots of outcry from the tabloids to guarantee sales!

Resident Evil was great fun wasn't it, It captured the mood of the video game just fine. I mean what do the people who hated it want from it? Socio-political drama? By the way I think Umbrella is a great name for a Corporation that is trying to put across a friendly image of protection and global coverage, whilst committing nefarious deeds behind the scenes, rather like any other multi-national corporation really. There see, it doesn't seem so silly now does it.

Back to the original point of the thread now. I'm of the opinion that this is the daddy of the FP shoot-em-up's, and do you know what, I think I'm right.

HAIL TO THE KING BABY!

Elite 2 (PC) (dispite having more in-space station options) was actually crap compared to the Spectrum original.

I'm pissed off cause I found out at xmas that Dad had cleared out the old Speccy (& the games that went with it).  I was going to claim that, and now it's gone!
Title: Re: Re:
Post by: Quirkafleeg on 13 January, 2003, 09:04:45 PM
Don't worry Odd there's a whole world of Speccy emulation out there on the web (and every other system come to that)

Elite, was first on the Beeb, I think. But only posh children had one of them, unlike us tough-kids with our Spectrums!
