Guy Davis, the art ninja responsible for the BPRD miniseries, The Marquis and Sandman Mystery Theatre sent me this Judge Death Illo.
I'd love to see him doing some covers for 2000AD. It'd be good to steal one of their artists for a change!
I've posted a couple of his other sketches up at www.comicartfans.com, a great site. Check ot the galleries, there's some great stuff.
:-) Rufus
Oooh. That's pretty damn nice.
I'm loving his art on BRPD, despite it being about as far from Mignolas as you could ever possibly get.
Hey art,
I'm really enjoying the BPRD stuff too. I think his style works really well with Mignola's very simple storytelling, He's got a really gritty dark approach, slightly cartoony as well, which has brought out a bit more humour in characters like Roger.
Check out the Dredd he did on my gallery page at Comicartfans.com
Rufus
Heh.. very cool. Like Art, I'm really enjoying his art on "The Dead" & I think the world of difference between his style and Mignola's is key - you're not spending all of your time thinking, "Well, Mignola would have handled that better..."
Hi Rufus
That's great - best Death I've seen for a while. Love Guy Davis' stuff on BPRD.
Rob
Ah Mr W! Guy's doing some great stuff, and is really up for trying his hand on some 2000AD stuff. Hear's hoping Tharg's minions are listening...
:-) Rufus
That's great stuff Rufus! Thanks for showing us.
I love the way he tried a different look for Death. A changing appearance seems fitting for a wierd character like him.
That looks fantastic. Guy Davis would be a real treat in the prog.

That's damn good!
I would
love to see Berni Wrightsons' take on Judge Death
Link: Wrightsons' Frankenstein
Didn't Wrightson illustrate some of the dark Tower books?
Not sure. He did illustrate The Stand though..
Link: The Stand pic
Guy Davis would be a real treat in the prog.
Definately an artist that would need the right script though.
I would love to see Berni Wrightsons' take on Judge DeathMe too! And Gary Gianni, and John Watkiss (at least, from what I remember of 'Last Kiss'...) for that matter.
I used to work with John Watkiss at an Animation studio in Soho. He taught us life drawing, and advanced alcohol appreciation/abuse. He was doing layouts and boards on Coppola's now defunct pitch on a Pinochio remake.(Really.) I've got a great picture he did of Ming the Merciless somewhere. i'll dig it out and post it ASAP.
I think Guy Davis would be great on a story like the recent 'Nosferatu' story in Dredd.
I'd like to see Paul Pope's take on 2000ad as well.
:-) Rufus
Heh. Sounds like it might be time for me to get a new icon, Rufus :-)
Ah! good point Mr Ming! When I get a good image of it, I'll email it to you! It's a huge picture he did. He's as mad as a bag of weasels that man.
I once failed to appreciate the genius of one of his scribbles, so he tore it up and threw it out over Rathbone Place. Then sat back down aand quietly drew as if nothing had happened!
R
Cheers, Rufus, that's be great!
I liked that, reminds me of Jim Baikie art, with perhaps a touch of Docherty.
Gianni doesn't draw as good a squid as Timson.
RAC: Wrightson illustrated Wolves of the Calla. He also did the Cycle of the Werewolf and the original Creepshow adaption.

Guy just sent me this!
Wow! Good stuff!
ooh thats nice!
i really like guy davis' s art.
he can draw some truly horrible monsters!
the demons in 'the marquis' are fantastic!
steevr
Those are gorgeous.
Damn Rufus. Not only is you own artwork great, you get all this great stuff as well!
Dan
nice stuff
but not as nice as fraser irving death
I just think it'd be great to see some fresh takes on our favourite characters, it wasn't supposed to be 'He's better than so'n so'.
There's so many talented artists ( writers I'm sure too..) who'd love to have a go on 2000ad's characters.
2000Ad should be looking to pick up more European artists. Maybe go to the Cons in France, Italy etc looking for them.
We used to have a stable of gifted European contribution provided by art agencies, and I don't see that anymore.
If we had more contemporary input from our Euro and US counterparts I'm sure it'd help sales of albums in these lucrative markets too.

Dear Tharg
1.00 US Dollars = 0.526283 GBP
Please hire Mr Guy Davis to do some drawings for you
Thanks
Your pal,
Johnny
LOL!
Precisely Johnny! Never has there been a better time to hire our Amerikaner cousins!
:-) R
Maybe, if you haven't already, you should actually send that letter to "Tharg".
Tharg has been alerted to this phenominal Thrill Power Outcome Potential!
Hopefully He's dusting off his intergalactic wallet as we speak.
To miss such an opportunity would indicate extreme Thrill-suckage on the part of his Greenness!
Rufus
I've posted some of Guy's other doodles on my gallery page at COMICARTFANS.COM, have a look!
:-) R
Thanks Jared,
ya clever technodroid!
One day I'll figure out such ninja trickery.
Go to gallery, look up D for Dayglo and I've got lots of 2000AD goodies listed. I keep posting more up, as I haven't scanned or photographed everything, so check back!
:-) R
Great images.
Awesome collection.
Great take on the lawmaster!

I'll try and get more posted up soon. I've got a lot of old Starlord art to sort properly. I've gotta get a new digital camera though, mine commit seppuku.
I'm also in the tentative stages of organising some 2000AD art diplays in central London, for this summer. I'll blab all when it's signed off!

As I understand it, someone from Rebellion was at Angouleme this year, looking to drum up interest in the Rebellion graphic novels range. Since they were just about the only UK publisher there, they ended up being inundated with artists and publishers looking for 2000AD to publish their stuff instead, 99% of which was porn, crappy cod-Tolkien fantasy, or crappy cod-Tolkien fantasy porn.
As you say, though, there are lots of great European artists, if only they can be persuaded to draw something other than naked elven warrior princesses riding unicorns. The only European arsist that I can think of that got a 2000Ad gig redcently was Inaka Miranda, and that was only because he made the effort to go to Bristol and show his stuff to Matt Smith, who hired him on the spot.
Morning Gordon,
Well.. it's a start! Maybe it's Angouleme that attracts pornopixie purveyers, hopefully we're looking in the wrong places then. There is a slant towards fantasy art on the continent, but there's a lot of great scifi stuff too. Maybe getting in touch with the Humanoide Associe or such would yield more compatibily artdroidwise!
Again, in Barcelona I saw lots of cool horror comics, so there's obviously talent hiding somewhere!

"Inaka Miranda, and that was only because he made the effort to go to Bristol and show his stuff to Matt Smith, who hired him on the spot."
Of course he had the good sense to go to study in this country, so he was probably already somewhat aware of our mysterious British 'culture'.
There is some good European sf and horror stuff out there, as well as all the hack and slash stuff. I was quite interested, when wandering around Brussells at Christmas time, how much stuff there is, and how accessible most of it is. There's a really big small press over there, which is certainly comparacble with ours in Britain, and I also finally got to see Pat Mills' Claudia, Vampire Knight by Olivier Ledroit (although it was in Flemmish, so god knows what it was about).
Don't they spend ages wading through pictures of spiderman and pin-ups with no demonstration of storytelling ability when they do that in the UK?
