Title: Thought Bubble 2019
Post by: Hawkmumbler on 17 December, 2018, 09:34:30 PM
So the countdown to the norths best convention is on again, have some plans in the line for next years TB, but does anybody have any idea which specific weekend in September it'll be next year, hoping to book a hotel imminently so I can make the full weekend this time.

Well thats a thing. And a pity, September was the perfect month for it, wasn't sure at first but the last few years in the local and in late early Autumn made for a lovely con.

The dates seem to coincide with Leeds German Market, which usually takes place in the same square as the Thought Bubble main tent. Which 'suggests' some kind of alterations to the location.

Don't know - was mentioned on fb that the cost of the hall had doubled at the Armouries, so unless there's been a renegotiation/change of heart...

Yep, Leeds isn't that big of a city so most places are walkable. It's more a case of if you want a hotel that's right on top of the event.

Interesting- but will the move rob TB of it's atmosphere and render it just another gig?

Time will tell.

Sadly, it means any tentative plans I had to go this year have been abandoned. It's a pain in the arse to get to by train, unfortunately.

It's to much of a pilgrimage for me at this point not to at least give the new venue a try. Hotel booked alreafy.
Title: Re: Thought Bubble 2019
Post by: Jim_Campbell on 21 February, 2019, 04:18:19 PM
Just to be clear: I'm sure the TB folks haven't done this lightly and I have no particular attachment to either Leeds or the previous venues — I'm sure the event will be just fine in its new home. My issue is with some very specific deficiencies in the UK rail network that make the travel impractical.

We'll see...

To be fair, I did try to go last year but work meant that I could realistically only go for the Saturday, but when I arrived at the train station, the train I was meant to catch had been cancelled, leaving me with the option of waiting another hour, to make a much longer version of the journey on a train that would contain its normal quota of passengers plus more or less everyone who was supposed to be on the train I had intended to take. Given that this was likely to take 2-3 hours off the very limited time I had at the show anyway, I'm afraid I fucked it off and went to the pub instead... :-/

Know I mentioned it to DDD down the pub but hadn't posted anything about it here yet so....basically live came at me hard this month and I have to decided between which convention to make in November, Thought Bubble or MCM Birmingham. Normally I would have gone for TB without a doubt, but as I had already sunk a sizable chunk into Bham, had to pull out of attending Harrogates own convention this year.

Hope the regular crew love the new digs and I can't wait to see how y'all get on, catch you at the next one.

From Sheffield the rivers will be rising until late afternoon, but at this point there is no expectation for the Don or other rivers to break now. Fingers crossed.

Rotherham is best avoided as the station is closed but aside from that and assuming the rivers do hold it's an improving situation.

Hopefully folks make it okay.

Bah! I'm really ill and have spent the evening in my room, alternately rushing to the toilet and drinking huge quantities of water to try and stay hydrated as my body attempts to expel every sodding drop of liquid it's ever contained.

Just got back home.

The journey up was pretty bad, with 3/4 of the London/Leeds trains cancelled and everyone piled in on the 4th.

I was standing all the way to Leeds, also with a fair bit of luggage, so even less nimble than unladen Steve.

Harrogate seemed very quiet for a Friday night, got booked into my hotel at the Yorkshire.

Room was pretty tiny, worse the bed was sandwiched between two walls.

Met up with Steve Sterlacchini, to drop off bits for the set up for the Joe and his Killer Robot table.

Steve had gone with a bespoke behemoth with a display stand for various bits and bobs that Dan (Planet Replicas) had printed from my 3D models...

Dan turned up from Brighton after about a 7-8 hours drive, so none of us were up to going out for a drink really.

After hardly sleeping because of said pokey bed, had an early start setting up/helping Dan take stuff from the car park at the Crowne Plaza to set up the PR stand.

Redshirts were fantastic as usual - we wondered how it would play out with the bad weather and relocation, but it seemed more consistently busy than the Royal Armouries where you definitely saw waves of business as punters wandered off to panels.

Harrogate itself was lovely, I thought the halls themselves were a bit stark in a similar way ExCel can be, and I do miss the cosiness of the RA.

There was a lot of the convention centre which didn't seem to be in use, I didn't get the chance to go to the panels.

Main downside (apart from not having power for a good of chunk of Saturday) were the PA announcements were pretty unclear above the general noise.

It was also a tight squeeze for us, as we only had one table with Mick signing/sketching,  and a few of us overspilling/helping out Dan, but also he had stock as well behind/under the table + associated bags/coats etc.

Anyway, we had a great time, and Mick and Chris are always lovely to chat to, as well as John W next door.

As usual when you're on a table you don't get much chance to wander/chat but did have a nice natter with Glyn Dillon in particular.

It certainly seemed like the show was a success from the footfall alone, particularly with it being a major move and terrible weather a day or two before.

Another good Thought Bubble - luckily, my trains weren't affected by the floodwaters, and I reached my hotel* in good time to meet Bolt-01 (plus minibolt), Jim Campbell, Conor & Lizzie Boyle and Si Spurrier for a few pints.

The new venue is good - nice to have everything in one site and with enough space to move around (though people who think a giant inflatable dinosaur costume is a good idea at a con need a good talking to!). It's true though that the halls can feel a little charmless as they're like aircraft hangers, and the party space is decidedly weird.

Caught up with Tiplodocus, Pete Wells, Rob Stewart and Fillipo, added 5 new autographs to my big book of droids (including the mighty Dave Gibbons), attended a couple of panels and bought some stuff...

I do - as I mentioned to the Chris Wildgoose, I think of it as my "thought bubble book" 'cos I would never have bought it if not for the free sample comics they were giving out at TB when the first one came out several years ago - it was an expensive marketing gamble on their part, but it paid off and the book sold well - it was enough to get me hooked!

I use imgur.com

After uploaded, go to the share options and select BBCODE for forums with the [ IMG ] tags and copy of paste that link into a post.

Here's the official coverage of the comps from the weekend.

Being sat next to the 2000AD stand, it was fun to see all the hopefuls queuing up on the Saturday - lots of terrified faces prior to putting their work under the nose of TMO!

Just like to point out that four of the nine finalists either are or have in the past worked for FQP.

Massive congrats to Liam and Robin for winning this year and it is worth mentioning that I was surprised to see how many of the entries (that I saw) were lettered.

Think it was a strong year for artists, but I heard a few grumbles relating to the format of the process.

The first come first served format of the writing Pitch Fest is good in that it allows people who wouldn't otherwise get the chance to pitch their story.

But unfortunately, because there's no filtering process, it also means you get virtual reality prisons (two), "OMG! I'm a character in a video game!" and tales without protaganists.

The winner was great though - well deserved.

I dunno what you could do to keep the opportunity there for first timers because I think that's really important. Maybe some really obvious DOs and DON'Ts  listed on the website.

They could possibly have squeezed in more pitches if, instead of all the judges commenting on every story, they just took turns and only one judge commented on each pitch.

They should also ask if your story involves sperm, and if it does, you get straight to the front of the queue. ;o)

Thought* I'd try get stuff without guns and capes on the cover. And Tom Foster kindly customised my Chromebook. And he seems like a lovely fella too.

* Thought. Do you see what I did there?

Thanks Flip-R for posting.

It'll be my first Grendel so I might resort to Wikipedia for some background after I've read it.

Led to this exchange on Sunday
Tom Foster: This one guy has got me drawing on his laptop
Me: That's cool. Like a Digital commission?
Tom: No. On this laptop (shows me said laptop with immaculate sketch being inked on it)

I was genuinely a bit lost for words...

Ah, I saw that - I didn't know it was you!

Maybe we need some nametags.

New location worked out well, didn't it? Felt busier and, as Steve said, didn't really feel like there were the ebbs and flows of previous years.

I think one benefit of my not travelling back until Monday morning is that my post-con blues were confined to the small amount of time I was still in Harrogate afterwards. Been fine since I got back!

Yeah, I don't know how it went for panels etc.

With the PA announcements being hard to hear, and new locations I wondered if that might have had a bearing on the footfall.

Or fewer people were actually going outside and just staying inside the convention centre. I certainly didn't nip out as much as I did at the RA.

I didn't see any entrance/exits other than the main one, so I guess you would get traffic even if it was a bunch of people just on their way out.

I think it could have done with a few quieter spaces, there may have been some but they didn't jump out.

It felt solid, but not sure if it had lost some of the variety that previous TBs had.

Heh. That reminds me of that silly penguin sketch from Month Python.
