There's got to be at least one Star wars film on though, right?  It's not Xmas without a Star Wars film. 

Back in the day it was only the thought of watching ESB that got me through the festive season.  And Raiders.

When I say in work 'it's not Xmas unless Star Wars is involved somehow' they look at me blankly.  For the youngsters its all about how much tat they can get for their cash.  The true meaning of Xmas (ie our lord and saviour Ben Kenobi) has truly been lost.

Have to say I'm with your colleagues here. Don't remember Star Wars being a notable part of Christmas telly (obviously it was a key component of Christmas presents right up until I was oh, 43.)

And let's be honest, Christmas telly has always been crap. Yes, you used to get a couple of decent films but at the price of all your favourite normal programmes being displaced by Festive Shite for ten days. God I hate Christmas University Challenge.

Pointless Celebrities is fine because it's the only quiz show that doesn't seem to water things down compared to the normal version.

I hate watered down celebrity versions of quizzes. On Celebrity Mastermind, Mylene Klass's specialist subject was 'Sex In The City - Season 2'!

Yep, and Star Wars toys. Every Xmas since the release of the first film. Not nativity toys, not baby Jesus toys - Star Wars toys.

Otherwise, yes - TV at Xmas is pants. But that was ok when all three films had come out, and TV stations were fighting between them about when to show Star Wars, Empire, and Jedi. Best Xmasses ever!!!

The Betamax copy of Star Wars I taped off the telly* featured the old STV logo with a bit of holly in the corner of the picture that flashed up to signify adverts were about to happen/had just happened.

Don't think anyone at Cowcaddens thought Wookies were especially Christmassy; the two big channels just rinsed the hell out of any films they bought and they saved the newest/biggest ones for Christmas. For around six or seven years**, a Star Wars film would have qualified as at least one of those.

** As TordelBack's discussed a few times, by around 1990, Star Wars was old hat. Couldn't give the shit away. It took a conversation with one of my brother's friends - the first hardcore Star Wars fan I ever knew - to make me realise it was actually a great film, rather than just another stupid thing I remembered fondly from a time when I couldn't be completely trusted to go to the toilet by myself. That and Alan Martin's memorable re-christening of the slacker demographic as Generation X-Wing, in Planet Swerve, positing that George Lucas had at least as much influence on the developing psychology of our 3-year-old selves as Kurt Cobain had on our 16-year-old selves.

I certainly associate Raiders with Christmas TV, but not Star Wars.  I'm sure I would have received Palitoy / Kenner toys for christmas, but the earliest presents I can recall right now are a computer-compatible tape player, the 1985 2000AD and Judge Dredd annuals and the Titan editions of the Ballad of Halo Jones (not all in the same year).
