Help! / Anyone with Saturday Dredd Cutout's from 1982?
20 February, 2017, 10:59:27 PM
As the title might mislead, I'm not after the Dredds.

Joker (not the Batman villian) drawn by the great Did Burgon from Whizzer and Chips is supposed to have appeared in the Daily Star in 1982. I wondering if any of the forum member with the cutouts from this time could confirm if Joker did appear and a scan too if possible!

At last this 'Zine is here,

Info below and many thanks to Rebellion for helping with permission.

'On sale at last here at last! http://www.comicsy.co.uk/hibernia/
The third in Hibernia's 'Comic Archive' series is here, taking a look at the dark underside of British comics with 'It's Ghastly, the untimely demise of Scream!'

Scream! comic appeared on the newsagents shelves for just 15 issues in 1984 but managed to leave a fearsome reputation behind.

Featuring the work of, to name a few, John Wagner, Alan Grant, Simon Furman, Alan Moore, José Ortiz, Eric Bradbury and Brendan McCarthy, Scream has built up a cult following over the years, with back issues and Holiday specials now highly collectable.

Scream's sudden disappearance from the newsagents led to rumours of it being removed because of parents complaints, or being the victim of a strike.

'Its Ghastly' delves into the murky world of Scream with contributions from all of its editors, Barrie Tomlinson, Ian Rimmer and Simon Furman to uncover the truth of its demise.
Scream's six Holiday Specials come under scrutiny and uncovers the origins of such stories as 'Black Beth' and Dave Gibbons 'The Nightcomer' and also included is a cover recreation to issue 16, and the actual covers to 17,18, and 19.

The highlight is a complete 16 page Nightcomer's tale that was due to start probably in issue 18 of Scream but lay unpublished until now. Join Rick and Beth for one last supernatural adventure by Simon Furman and José Gonzales and much more in 'Its Ghastly', the ultimate Scream companion.
64 pages (10 in colour)

I just put a piece on FB about this, I think there will be some interest for some here, it make a nice companion to Steve MacManus' book.

From FB.

'I got a copy of Barrie Tomlinson's 'Real Roy of the Rovers Stuff' earlier in the week.
For those of you not familiar with Barrie Tomlinson, Barrie was working his own comic revolution when Wagner, Mills, Gosnell and MacManus were creating Battle, 2000 AD and Starlord.
Tomlinson took Roy of the Rover, a popular comic character from Tiger and launched him in his own title, and in turn making Roy a national institution.
The book details how he used his PR talents to bring Roy to the attention of the national media, getting celebrity's writing for Roy of the Rovers and even starring in the strip!
He also details his development of more 'soap' style storyline's with writer Tom Tully.
Packed with photos, press releases, newspaper heading, and unseen material like the proposed stamp set for Euro 96, it's an entertaining read.
It also covers some familiar ground of the office working in IPC in the seventies and eighties, a perfect compliment to Steve MacManus' 2000AD book 'The Mighty One'
Other comics that Tomlinson was responsible for are, Speed, The new Eagle, Scream, Wildcat and many more.'

General / Lost Bolland cover?
03 May, 2016, 10:41:49 PM
Might be a bit of a dramatic title, but while looking for something completely different I found a small image in a Fanzine online called AKA.
It features an interview with Dave Gibbons and Brian Bolland, and accompanying it was a small picture of the first Forbidden Planet catalogue.
Pictured below if I can get it to work, I reckon its a Bolland Dredd cover that I have never seen. Its very poor resolution, but it enough to have an idea of the cover. Does anyone have a good copy of the cover? 1978 at a guess.

Other Reviews / Minor 2000 AD stories
04 November, 2015, 11:33:09 PM
While looking for information on a particular story without wading through a load of back issue I found this list on Wiki,

Quotehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_minor_2000_AD_stories#Dinosty

There is a few on it that made me go, WTF (as those kids say)
Absalom
Cradlegrave
insurrection
Tyranny Rex
Zombo
Luke Kirby.
Ok, Maybe some of the above are not A list, but they are not far off it(Zombo, the art is pushing you there!)

And loads more that should be on the list, Where is AHAB, Death Planet, Colony Earth, A love Like Blood, etc.

And one made me sad, that there was never any more Sancho Panzer.

Thoughts? It goes to show the massive amounts of quality material that the house of Tharg has published over the years that gets glossed over a little.

Off Topic / Graphics tablet.
18 October, 2015, 09:39:58 PM
I'm not even sure if I am calling it the right thing.   My 13 year old girl is showing promise as an artist, and she is wondering about a pad that she can draw on for the laptop or pc.  She had an ap on her tablet but it seems pretty limited. Is there something cheap that she can learn the ropes of digital drawing?
Any suggestions appreciated.

Off Topic / Rugby WC
28 September, 2015, 11:22:18 PM
Surprised that this has not reared its head yet on the board. I am not a huge sports fan, but Rugby is such an entertaining game. I should also point out that, Irish boarder will understand, that the masochist in me has me following Mayo football for years, and to watch a team actually win something is an even better feeling.

Anyway, this World Cup has been hugely entertaining so far, the matches are on at reasonable times, the weaker teams have certainly upped their games, it has resulted in far more entertaining games in the group stages.

The two big talking points, I didnt think much could top SA and Japan, and then the Wales and England game came along. Fabulous viewing as a neutral, although Ill admit, (first time for everything) I was cheering Wales by the end of the game.  Ireland's flying under the radar a bit, just doing whats expected, the next two games will tell a tale.

Anyone going to this?
I see Mike and PJ are booked in, Ill be there too flogging Hibernia's wares.
If anyone from the board is going stop by and say hello!
