Title: Weekly Comics, Monthly! - Hawkmonger & my new 2000 AD related comic Podcast
Post by: The Adventurer on 22 June, 2015, 03:00:19 AM
Hey gang, about a week ago Hawkmonger and I decided to take a dry run at a new Podcast idea. One where we just casually review the weekly comics we've read in the prior month. At the moment that primarily entails the UK's own 2000 AD, and the English arm of Japan's Weekly Shonen Jump.

I'm still working on hosting solutions, but as its been a week and the show's content is getting staler by the day I figured I should get it up in front of relevant interested listeners (IE: You guys). So below is a direct link to the MP3 file of the episode. You can listen to it directly in your browser, or download it to your MP3 player. Whichever you prefer.

This episode we talk about Progs 1931 to 1934. And Weekly Shonen Jump 2015 issues 25 - 28. We also take time to talk about League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Century, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, and Charley's War.

Weekly Comics, Monthly! - Episode 01 (http://fincast.guttertrash.net/show/WeeklyComicsMonthly01.mp3)

TIMESTAMPS for episode content are as follows
05:31 - 2000 AD Progs 1931 - 1934
35:32 - Weekly Shonen Jump 25 - 28
01:18:52 - League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Century
01:25:01 - Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Battle Tendency Part 1
01:36:44 - Charley's War

If you have any questions, suggestions, or any other comics, feel free to send us a message to WEEKLYCOMICSMONTHLY@GMAIL.COM We would love to hear from you.  And I do hope to have an actual website for this in the near future. Not to mention be on iTunes, and possibly Youtube.

It was only after we finished recording that it occured to me that I could just have googled it. Derpy derp!

I think I need to take a look at my configuration as I sounded quite muffled throughout, but really enjoyed recording the first episode (even if I did waffle quite a bit).

Good podcast guys, enjoyed that and though manga is not and probably never will be my thing, I stuck with it. One Punch Man you have mentioned before and I may now have to download something just to see if it's half as great as you make out. Sounds pretty damn entertaining.

Good work!

No sound quality problems for me. Only the other day I gave up on another related podcast as it proved unlistenable (a rare occurrence), but this was fine.

We've finally got our website hosting sorted. I'm still working on sprucing it up (I am not a very good graphic designer for banners a such... but I'm working on it) but its functional and you can now add us to your RSS feed, or subscribe to us on iTunes so you never miss an episode!

So check us out at wcm.guttertrash.net (http://wcm.guttertrash.net)

Looking forward to recording out next episode in the next couple weeks! Thanks for the kind words so far Rich and Fung!

Well back to stripping paper and back to listening to podcasts and after catching up with the 2 Thrillcasts I was very much looking forward to this... even if it meant I missed all the wickets in the cricket this morning - damnit.WHAT A COST...

... still my ego was appeased by what I think was a name check and my ears by a very pleasent listen. I'm a big fan of The Adventurer and Hawkmonger, after all they hangout at my favourite thread a lot (in fact as I recall The Adventurer started it in fact) so no surprise this was a good listen... and who knew The Adventurer had the voice of some US movie icon. A man born for the airwaves surely!

Keep it up fellas and I'll be listening.

Many thanks Colin, in the next episode you can look forward to myself regularly pronouncing El Maldito incorrectly, insulting the irish by accident, and trying to surpress the memory of the One Piece rap. I'm sure Jim has his own list of highlights.

That's okay.  In compensation, though, you could make a stab at pronouncing my surname properly.  I am not - as your American co-host (and you following his lead) seem to think - a French café owner from Allo Allo.

Just what's needed in a comics podcast — another round of Rennie-bashing.  ::)

The capacity of comics fans to mispronounce words whose pronunciation is both obvious and easily deduced from their spelling never ceases to amaze me...

I don't think we were too harsh. We were positively gushing about there being two fantastic Rennie strips in the prog at the moment. And a rather okay one in the Meg. Jeagir got my 'strip of the month' nod too.

I've just been disappointed there was never a tieing up of loose ends to Cabs.

I think my post may have come across rather less light-heartedly than I intended, for which I will apologise. I haven't listened to your podcast, and I wasn't intending to criticise you as much as I was trying to point out that another podcast whose name I shall not mention has the market in Rennie-bile more or less cornered.

Cheers

I see. When I made my initial remarks in the second episode where intended to explain why, for a time, Mr. Rennie stepped away from the comic industry. Or at least to the best of my understanding. A certain remark I made most certainly came off harsher than was intended, most likely due to myself having drank a few before recording. A huge error of judgement that I shan't allow to happen again.

In regards to my pronunciation of Gordon's surname, I do apologise, as (at least in my case) my mental disability often impairs my ability to prounounce things as they should.

Well Jim and I have decided to put WCM on hold until the new year so we can test out a new format and allow for both of us to just get some affairs in order.

However, i'm free a few times a week and happy to record a mini episode of sorts with anyone willing to lend a hand. Weather it be from the house of Tharg, the Jump or just general comic geekery i'd be more than up for it. :)

Once i've found some decent recording software.

Only three months late due my extreme laziness(tm)! Its the lost November Episode of Weekly Comics Monthly!

WEEKLY COMICS, MONTHLY! - Episode 06 (2000 AD Edition) (http://wcm.guttertrash.net/weekly-comics-monthly-episode-06-2000-ad-edition/)

East and West collide in WEEKLY COMICS, MONTHLY! Every month hosts Jim & Zac chat about the last month's worth of two of the premier weekly serial anthology comics in the world, 2000 AD and Weekly Shonen Jump!

Lost to the mists of time (and also laziness), but now found and restored to its full glory its the Lost Episode(tm) of Weekly Comics, Monthly. Its another 2000 AD episode with Jim & Zak tackling Progs 1948 – 1952 and Judge Dredd Megazine 364. With the jumping on Prog of 1950, new and returning strips are the name of the game, with the return of Defoe, Brass Sun, Bad Company, Sinister-Dexter, and of course Judge Dredd to take us to the New Year. But before getting to the return of the new, we have some unfinished business with the conclusions of Dreams of Deadworld and The Alienist. Meanwhile in the Megazine things continue trucking along with more Demon Nic, Storm Warning, Lawless, and the conclusion of Judge Dredd – El Maldito. Plus, a look at the hidden classic of Peter Milligin's FREAKS in the reprint floppy.

-----------------------------

Sorry about the long delay, the end of last year really got on top of me and I was actively wondering if I could handle a second podcast, especially with trying to coordinate 2 episodes a month for WCM. So after recording this episode I decided to take a step back and just reevaluate. After some thinking Zak and I are going to continue the show in 2016, but we're going back to a single episode a month plan. That means 2000 AD and Weekly Shonen Jump content together again. Only this time instead of taking three and a half hours of going over a mountain of content we'll be handling things in a more streamlined fashion. The good news is we've already recorded this new version of the show covering January 2016, and the better news is it actually turned out better then I could have hoped. So look forward to Episode 7 of the new and improved Weekly Comics, Monthly very soon.

Really glad that your continuing this stuff as I love it.

I have of course been rubbish and fallen behind (well I listened to the first three then lost track.) a bout of decorating got me caught up with the Thrillcast and so today when doing some more painting (of shelves not the interesting kind) I listen to 2 of these (episodes 4 and 5) and really enjoyed them. Will check out 6 when I get time BUT if you get new stuff out I'll try to make time to keep up to date as I do enjoy it.

Keep it up fellas.

Edited to ask: Any recommendations for which app to go for to subscribe to the Podcast? There's loads and I don't Pod me Cast these days except for Thrillcast and doesn't seem Soundcloud is an option?

Leaner and meaner then ever Jim and Zac take a close look at the new year premiers of Judge Dredd and Kingdom in 2000 AD Prog 1961 - 1965. While in the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump #05-09 their sights are set on the continuing adventures of My Hero Academia and Black Clover. After that WCM presents their new Lightning Round where your hosts take a moment to say a few words about everything else. All that and the Judge Dredd Megazine, with the conclusion of Demon Nic, and a recap of the last few months of Megazine reprints.

Caught up with this while doing more painting this afternoon and really enjoyed the new format. Kinda. It makes it easier to get through but I miss the miandering freedom of the old longer format. Completely understand from your perspective the need to tighten things however.

Do miss you chating about general comics at the end though.

Still great fun nattering from two of my favourite forumites. Hope you are able to keep it up.

Yeah I listen to both in the condensed one - in the full one with the SJW week I'd skip around a bit to the general comics jibber jabber. This new format I happily listened to the SJW (or should that be WSJ?) stuff as its was engaging from a general comics interest point of view,

WSJ, Colin. SJW (social justice warrior) is something else entirely.

Thats nice to know, on the last recorded episode me and Adventurer managed to get a bit of time to talk about other comics so I think episode 7 was just a way of testing the new format, which I still think holds up well. Yeah, it was sure nice to talk about things at a slower pace but I don't think ut's particularly fair for Jim seeing as we record at, like, midday over on his side wherest't it's ussualy pretty late for me. But that just means when we get to put the spotlight on specific series it give's us a greater backlog of stuff to talk about, which is pretty useful (I mean, I could talk about certain series all day but thats what the NCBD mega thread is for!).

Edited to ask: Any recommendations for which app to go for to subscribe to the Podcast? There's loads and I don't Pod me Cast these days except for Thrillcast and doesn't seem Soundcloud is an option?
I don't know what it's like in Windows and Mac land (well, presumably iTunes in the latter) but over here in the Linux wilds I use Rhythmbox and Banshee (general audio players which also play audio files and radio).

Sat here editing my first episode and remarkably enjoying the experience. It's dawned on me that because of the firing progress I need not worry about long pauses or cutting to resources when you forget a characters name. Listening to other podcasts gave me the impression I was a massive blunder head who felt the need to cram every moment with speech!

Also, it just occurred to me that if anyone wanted any questions answering on the show, besides the helpful email Adventurer kindly set up you can also just tweet (https://mobile.twitter.com/hawkins_zach) me!

That was supposed to be general audio players which also play podcasts and radio.

Well despite the fact I had a couple of the Thrillcats to catch up with when faced with excessive ironing and associated house work today decided to catch up with this. Once again really enjoyable. I do like the new format. The only thing I really miss the more general chat about what you are reading. Mind the random stuff was possibly there just about computer games which is a world of blank to me.

Keep up the good work chaps.
