Suggestions / Re: Kid Friendly Reprint
12 October, 2009, 07:47:17 PM
It's a sad fact that the kids comic on the shelf that doesn't have some plastic toy sellotaped to the front is the one that will stay on the shelf. They're mercenary little buggers sophisticated young consumers these days.

Don't Marvel still do kiddy-friendly versions? I often grab what I think is an unread Spiderman or Fantastic Four from the library only to discover it's a "Marvel Adventures" or some-such, with all the depth of a Saturday morning cartoon.

As for 2000ad, if you took out all the boobs, swearing and "adult themes", there's still be room for stories that grown ups may not approve of - Flesh or Shako for example. Nobody said people getting limbs ripped off in spurts of blood was bad did they?

Well done to everyone. Those were my three choices, only in a different order, but there were loads of great stuff that sadly didn't get as much attention, as always.

Books & Comics / Re: Civil War

Civil War is worth a read, it stands head and shoulders above DC's regular mulitiverse spanning yawn-crises. I was suckered into buying 17 different TPBs of Civil War (including the recent "What if" collection) but not all of them are vital. I'd pick up "the Road to Civil War" and "Civil War" itself to give you all you really need, plotwise. I've seen a bumper collection recently, but I'm not sure which volumes are in this.

The "Amazing Spiderman" and "Iron Man" volumes flesh out the main protagonists' stories, "The Punisher War Journal" is rather good too, and I'd also recommend the 2-part "Front Line" book, which looks at the whole saga from a fresh angle.

Also be aware that the shock ending you refer to does not actually take place in any of the Civil War books. You'll have to buy the 3-volume
"Death of Captain America"
to get that story.

Heh. I actually have -- and still wear -- that t-shirt.
Mine got tight about the belly, and went from "thin" to "transparent" before finally falling to pieces many moons ago.

An underwhelming Meg - maybe it suffers more in comparison to the fantastic progs we're getting?

Dredd was a good simple shoot em  up to contrast with Wagner's plot-heavy stuff in the prog, Bato Loco is always a lot of fun, and Armitage ended less interestingly than I was hoping.

I've flicked through the rest, but may never actually get around to reading any of it. A Tank Girl text story and three creator interviews? I don't think so.

Prog / Re: Prog 1657 - System Shock!

I always considered it rather bad form to bag the thread on a Saturday morning with a "it's arrived but I've not read it yet" post. Isn't it only decent that a review thread should be "bagged" by the first person to offer a review?

Now the cover goes up early, we're getting two pages of posts before anyone's even had their prog!

I love it, I think there have only been one or two that only made me smile rather than chuckle out loud, and they better still be doing that poster when my subs renewal rolls round again!

BTW, IIRC suicide is only illegal in the Meg outside of a licensed Euthanisium, much like smoking outside the Smokatorium, low-level skysurfing etc.  A lot of things are restricted in the Meg, rather than banned outright - in the case of suicide, we've repeatedly seen the chaos leapers cause.
*ahem*

suicide is perfectly legal, but only if done in a licensed euthanasium. Jumping off a city-block endangers other citizens and attracts a high sentence!
