Games / Re: The Board Game Thread
08 December, 2020, 01:50:42 PM
It's been almost a year since I got Helter Skelter, the Dredd boardgame. Having played it a dozen times, I can safely recommend it.

The game is essentially a face-off between two decks of cards with some terrain, range, and line-of-sight elements baked into the board. Choose a team, and play to their strengths to cross the finish line before your opponent. Cycle cards through your hand that permit named team members to take actions or defend against attacks. Spend wisely: if you're left with an empty hand on your opponent's turn, they can easily wipe one of your guys off the board.

The team abilities could be better distinguished, and forced movement seems like an obvious omission from the rules, but the game is easily picked up and very fast to set up and play. Just what you need when you have a half-hour to fill. It also looks fantastic.

Disclaimer: we've only ever played with 2 people. I'd love to play with more as it would be utter carnage. There isn't much mobility built into the rules and you'll be hoping you deploy in advantageous zones.

We like this enough that we'll be getting the Dark Judges expansion as our next board game-adjacent purchase.

Next up for me in the miniature 2000AD department: the Warlord Dredd skirmish game. Look for a review of that in 12 months! :)

I've seen various rumours online that the franchise might be heading to TV.

I wonder how much of this though is trying to game ebay's algorithms?  Similar issues with Amazon IIRC ...

Amazon has an element of automatic algorithms setting the prices though, as far as I know those on eBay are manually set by the seller every time.
There are plenty of content scrapers that will be fooled by such nonsense and inflate collectible prices, I'm sure.

I was never into the EU and still haven't watched most of Clone Wars or Rebels...but even I could hear the sound of a thousand fanboys squeejing in delight during the last episode. :)

I could have done with the
lightsaber combat
to have more sizzle but overall, another blinder. If this is the model for Star Wars TV going forward, we might just be on the cusp of Star Wars rediscovering its cool.

Queen's Gambit, Netflix. We were gripped by this. I hope it isn't spoilery to say that it is so nice to see a female-led show where *none* of the major supporting characters are predatory and/or abusive cardboard cut-outs. It's an uncommon relief to see a complex character who is loved and enabled by those around her instead of used and thrown away. I kept expecting the other shoe to drop, but it never did. Great stuff.

Rebellion has done  a sterling job. In the current climate still to receive the weekly prog and monthly meg is just awesome. They have not only kept the prog alive they added so many publications that I never had access to their current catalog it is outstanding.
A million times this.

2000AD could so easily be defunct right now, but in the midst of a truly horrible time it's positively shining.

The Child has the powers of a Jedi and absolutely no impulse control. It's dangerous, and the show is treating it that way. I couldn't be happier.

Plus, this is just the *coolest* slice of Star Wars since Rogue One. It's comic book Star Wars brought to life, which is a wonderful thing.

After a wobbly "Let's shoot everybody" start, the next THREE episodes of Season 3 have been pretty solid Star Trek.

The Trill episode was lovely and very touching with good science fiction concepts and a crew working to solve a problem if ever so cheesy.

So Star Trek then.
Agreed on all counts. This is sci-fi as tonic, with the crew insisting on hope in the face of paranois and cynicism. A couple of nice nods to existing canon as well (
mention of Voyager must surely mean the EMH will put in an appearance, especially since the new EMH/AI doctor is such a doofus
).

For better or worse this feels like unfettered Star Trek. It's not stuck creating something new in a vague prelude to what we've already seen (the end of S2 neatly put a cork in that bottle). It can rewrite the entire universe if it wants, and it's carefully treading that path. I'm enjoying every second.

Cheers!

Ignore my stupidity, but i can tell that Boba and Jango Fett wore similar armour, and that Mandalorians were a warrior race?

Most people who have watched all of the films (but not the TV series) wouldn't know what Mandalorians are, so don't worry about it.  Mandalorians are basically a warrior race, Boba and Jango Fett - we don't know exactly what their relation is, but they did wear Mando armour.  That's about all we really know.
Plus it's all presented very neatly in the opening episode(s).
