Not a fan of Leonardo di Caprio then?

:D as it happens, I'm actually not the biggest fan! He's fine.

Weren't the replicants biological and capable of
growing old
if the designer so wished? I get confused on the rules of Bladerunner..

Starship Troopers - The first film is one my all-time favourites and it's been dross all the way down ever since

Critters 2 - Loved the first 2 then it drops off a cliff

Halloween 3 - Halloween 2 isn't great but if it had ended with 2, we wouldn't have got 3

Once upon a time I would've said Red Dwarf should've definitely ended with series 6 but they've got better recently...

Definitely agree with Tordelback that Predator 2 is great "You can't see the eyes of the demon, until 'im come callin..". I like Robocop 2 too, neither are as good as their predecessor but great fun all the same. Fingers crossed the new Robocop is any cop (heyooo), I know Blomkamp just exited it I just don't know if that's a good thing

I would like a sequel to Serial Mom.

oh wow yeah that's the one, thanks everyone! Ah so it was a tie-in and those are the designs from the movie, it all makes sense now. I remember getting this and the prog and although I thought this was inferior, I was still not upset I had more Dredd to read!

^Perusing Barney, this cover predicted the Aliens franchise crossover! :D

Help! / Dredd Comic For Kids

Am I going crazy, or did 2000ad publish a separate comic in the mid-90s which was Dredd but a kind of reimagining, and much more traditional and family friendly? I remember a story about Dredd training a cadet but that's all I've got. I have no idea what the keyword would be to make Google or it's disfigured brother Bing reveal this to me!

I was just thinking, Dolph Lundgren would make a fantastic Judge!!! Perhaps even Dredd himself!

Following revelations of his not-getting-too-beaten-up clause suggesting a somewhat fragile image, would he wear the chin star, I wonder?

He was in Crank 1 and 2 though! :D

But no you're right, I can't see him donning the hallowed chin star. Now I think about it, I'd bet a tenner the chin star wouldnt survive the transition to the screen no matter who played him, or maybe it'd be turned into a gritty faded prison tattoo under his eye or something :)

It does have an amazing atmosphere that still holds up. Interestingly (to me) when Dolby gave us a demo of their Atmos technology one of the things they used was a version of Doom 3 that they'd upmixed to Atmos. I thought it was really cool how of all the modern games they could have chosen (some of which are already in Atmos) they felt the best way to showcase what it can add was with a game that old. It's a real testament to how dripping with atmosphere that game still is. Hearing a level of that game with all those environmental and creepy sounds coming from above and all around was bloody terrifying!

I still need to pick up this new edition, but I might get it for my charity game marathon this year and do a full playthrough in the dark for maximum spookiness.

That's a cool story thanks! The sound is indeed incredibly well designed and effective, a few times during my playthrough I span round to shoot whatever it was that was supposedly breathing over my shoulder or sniggering devilishly in a doorway behind me, and there was nothing there. The game had succeeded in turning me in to Private Hudson. Dead Space deservedly won awards for its amazing horror sound design but it was standing on the shoulders of giants in a lot of ways I now realise!

I'll definitely try and tune in for the marathon again this year, and I reeeally want to catch Doom 3! Great price at £8.99 too!

Metal Wolf Chaos XD is next on my list but havent got the cash right now..

A friend told me by text that Jason Kingsley had posted a pic of himself with the script, but I'm tired and read it as Jason Statham, and whilst I'm still delighted at some movement now I'd love to see Statham as Judge Armour at some point :D

Yeah it does make it a lot harder, but I totally get it - I like big sprites too and did the same thing when I first started, went big. The gargantuan rotoscoped sprites of a game like King of Fighters XII are basically pornography for me! I can't hang though.

Sure heres my NES Dredd running, pretty much finished although I might tweak some things yet:

The early parts of Doom were definitely a horror game to me as a kid, sheepishly peeking round the corners of a purged human habitat, white knuckles around my nearly depleted shotgun, lights flickering, listening to the groans and grunts of god-knows-what in the next room and knowing I have to go through there..

Then by later levels, you've seen all the horrors the game has to offer, you're in the more colourful and less relatable hell, you have godly weapons, you're extremely familiar with the controls, the levels open up more often to accommodate the huge crowds you have to fight, the mood and the action changes a lot. You're circle strafing around spider demons at 90 mph firing tactical nukes whilst cackling like a maniac.

I feel like Doom 3 captures one of those sides of Doom, and Doom 2016 the other, whilst dialling them up to 11. I'm pretty chuffed we got both. I can also highly recommend the Brutal Doom mod for original Doom, it makes the violence ridiculous, adding lots of new weapons, gore and mechanics (including the melee kill animations that Doom 2016 later had).

Roll on that Doom 64 rerelease/remastering that is rumoured to be on the horizon, another great game!

Recently played through the Doom 3 (BFG Edition) 2019 rerelease on Xbox One, it's showing its age a bit in some superficial areas, but holds up incredibly well for a game from 2004! I got sucked right back in and it's as good as any current game for my money.

I forgot how much of a star the base itself is, super oppressive, claustrophobic, dark (they lit this thing like a seedy nightclub from day one), dangerous, and with an over-designed look to all the metal panels and exposed machinery, it's almost baroque. All before a Hell portal was even a twinkle in Betruger's eye!

I hadn't played the BFG Edition before, and the only change I noticed was the flashlight. You can now have the flashlight turned on whilst simultaneously holding a gun, which wasn't the case before. My friend said that it almost feels like cheating :) . It does make it a bit easier and less scary in parts, but it's fine overall. There's one bit where a guy chaperones you with a light through a pitch black area, which made sense in 2004 but now his dialogue about doing you a massive favour doesn't quite ring true!

I always thought it was a worthy successor to the Doom crown, but it had plenty of its detractors back then. I wonder if it'll change any minds this time round, now that perhaps expectations are different?

Ah yes you definitely want to be able to see the full picture as you work. Most animators work with a key frame system, where they first draw the defining frames of the action and then when they're happy, add the 'tween frames that smoothen it out - which is easier work now you have a point A and point B for that frame to move between. Usually it's all very rough until they have every frame, they want to make sure they've captured the movement before they devote time to properly drawing and rendering.

I definitely don't envy you having to draw Dredd's eagle pad in subtle angle changes! You can still move it every frame though, it'd definitely look better. Here it is possessed by Judge Death and using all 8 frames to move, even though there's only 3 unique drawings:

One thing I'd really recommend to make it easier on yourself is go smaller next time, that's a big ol' sprite at around 150px tall and would prove challenging for most people! You can iterate quicker (feels good and is great for learning) and approximate more at lower resolutions all while getting more experience with the nitty gritty of pixel art, pushing single pixels around. The fantastic Dredd sprite in the SNES game is about 1/3 the size of yours for example and not a small sprite at all (about 50px tall). My NES Dredd sprite is around 30px tall!

That's awesome you got to grips with it so quick, I've not used Construct but I've seen some great games made in it. Unity is a really powerful engine, I stick with Game Maker personally as it's great for low resolution 2d games and I hear you have to know proper programming languages to get the absolute most out of Unity. If I ever look at 3d I might have to make the jump though, Game Maker is.. a bit of a joke in that department :D

Wow that's an big impressive sprite, nice one! Pixel art and Dredd, two of my favourite things in the world <3

Looks suitable for gameplay, do you plan on doing anything with it in that regard? It's so easy to make games these days with Game Maker and Unity etc (I have a Dredd NES game prototype I must return to :D )

Some animation points for the last walk gif you posted - his vertical weight shift behaves differently in the last half of the gif versus the first half, it looks off because it should be the same (one cycle for each leg). Draw a line 1 pixel above his head every frame and you'll see what I mean as it animates.

Also his shoulder pads are animating at half the rate as the rest of him, with these big sprites and how much distance the pads have to cover it can look choppy. Could do with some frames between to smooth it out!

Great work!

As a games company, Rebellion have had the ability to make 2000 AD games for nearly 20 years, and have made 2 and a bit 2000 AD games.

goddamn, put like that.. :'(

I think we'll see the Dredd TV show but yeah I have to doubt they'll be prolific with 2000ad-related TV content
