Title: Got Wii?
Post by: The Amstor Computer on 09 December, 2006, 01:40:53 PM
Thanks to Amazon, my console arrived today & I'm now the proud owner of Wii - plus Wii Sports, Wii Play, Monkey Ball, Red Steel, Zelda & Call of Duty 3!

Just got everything hooked up, downloaded a few Virtual Console games & am creating some Mii & then I'm going to have a pop at Wii Sports.

My Wii number is: 1185 1841 9282 7323, so if anyone else out there wants to add me to their address book feel free. If you were lucky enough to grab a console, pop your number up here as well.

The interface is fucking great so far, and after the initial period of getting used to a new controller I'm whizzing round the menus & typing away on the onscreen keyboard with no hassle at all. Can't wait to see how the games play!

A fair bit - but I'd been putting cash aside for a while & threw my last overtime cheque in there as well. Something like:

£180 - console plus Wii Sports
£150 - the five games (incl. second remote)
£30 - second nunchuk + classic controller
£30 - 4000 Wii Points for spending in the online shop

Slightly embarassing amount of money to spend, but it's my big gaming buy of the year & a bit of a treat. Still, the whole lot came in at about the same price - or cheaper - than a new PS3!

Just got off playing Wii Sports & Red Steel. Wii Sports is great fun, though I'm not having a great deal of success with Tennis. Bowling & Boxing are the dog's nuts, and Baseball is quite fun as well. Definitely going to have to grab my brother at some point and haul him in for a game.

Red Steel is a real mixed bag. The controls work brilliantly in some parts & really roughly in others, there are some sections which look stunning & others which are basic GameCube level etc... but the game is surprisingly immersive & once you get over the initial impulse to wave the controller around like an idiot & start making more controlled motions it really clicks. Swordfighting is a bit basic, but still good fun.

Very impressed with the system so far.

mbanners - just added your friend code to my address book. If you add mine you might have the pleasure of meeting a Mii version of Nikolai Dante (along with Gi-Ant, the freakish ant-faced Mii I spent 10 minutes creating earlier...)

It wasn't until I was playing the baseball game that it occurred to me that the whole thing is just an extension of the DS stylus.  I suppose emulating the biggest-selling console of all time is probably the smartest move when Sony and Microsoft are pissing up the wall with the run of the mill stuff.
The graphics aren't fantastic, with Zelda being nothing that couldn't be done on the Gamecube (and there's a GC version coming out), but the kids went crazy for the whole swinging thing - don't leave them with it unsupervised, that's all I'm saying.  I kept my distance, which probably saved me a few knocks.  The sports games look poor, but then they are just tech demos.

How does the internet setup compare to the Xbox in terms of how easy it's set up?  I gave up trying to get XB Live working and left the modem back to the shop, and I was told I wasn't the only one with the same problem.

Yeah, this is basically a home console version of the DS - lower-powered than the competitors, but with a brand-new interface and an approach that tries to include people beyond your trad gamers.

Graphics are a mixed bag, and as I haven't been able to try the system hooked up with SCART or component cables yet - not shipping until next week - I'd hesitate to be too critical of certain things I know are being caused by the composite cables the system shipped with. It is a step up from GameCube, but if you're going in there expecting anything close to what the 360 or PS3 can do you'll be disappointed.

There aren't too many launch titles that really show off what the system should be capable of - Zelda is a GameCube game, essentially, and it's not been reworked to take advantage of the extra horsepower the Wii has. Red Steel is fairly decent looking shooter, but it has some rather painful shortcomings that a more talented dev team with a bit more grasp of the hardware would have been able to improve upon. That said, there are some very pretty sections that are beyond what the 'Cube could do. Monkey Ball is gorgeous, but in a very stylised way that may not appeal to everyone. CoD 3 is quite obviously a quick port - its visuals are basically the sort of level you'd expect from a multi-platform GameCube title. Surprisingly, Wii Sports is actually quite something - the very basic style is deliberate & will certainly not be to everyone's taste, but there are some very neat graphical effects in there that the GameCube simply couldn't do.

If you want to see what this machine can really do, you're going to have to wait for the second generation of games - stuff like Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy or Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles will probably be the games that demonstrate what the modest increase in power will mean in terms of visuals.

Internet setup is a piece of piss - 30 seconds and it had detected my Belkin wireless router and created a connection. Two minutes later I was online and downloading Bonk's Adventure & F-Zero. Sending emails from the system is a doddle, and the firmware updates shifted quickly & smoothly. The real test of the network is going to come when the first games go online - sometime early next year, I think - but until then what net functionality is there works perfectly well. Can't wait to see what Opera & the News & Weather channels are like when they launch in a few weeks.

Nothing you've said there encourages me to buy it.

I own a PS2. I have to ask, if the brought out a similar style wireless controller, and the games to match- wouldn't it be just as good, but at ½ the price?

How much life is there left in my PS2?
Title: Re: Got Wii?
Post by: The Amstor Computer on 09 December, 2006, 09:28:22 PM
Problem is that - even assuming that someone did bring out a Wii-style PS2 controller - you would end up with barely a handful of games that supported it, simply because developers couldn't guarantee that PS2 owners would have access to it. With the Wii the remote & nunchuk are packed in with every single console sold so game developers can implement control schemes based around that setup with no worries.

As for how much life there is in your PS2? I'd guess at least until 2008, but I'd expect major support from developer & publishers to tail off then. It'll likely hang on for a while longer as a budget system with a great library of games, but as a vital platform with interesting new releases... it's time is likely to be up in the next 12 months.
Title: Re: Got Wii?
Post by: ukdane on 09 December, 2006, 09:49:59 PM
But isn't the controller problem that you mention, similar to what is currently acutally happening with both the Eye-toy, and Buzz controllers?
Title: Re: Got Wii?
Post by: The Amstor Computer on 09 December, 2006, 10:16:07 PM
Well, both Eyetoy & Buzz have dedicated games released that use the peripherals but they are fairly limited & they form a tiny fraction of the PS2 library.

The beauty of having the Wii controllers packed-in to every console sold is that any developer working on the system can implement the motion sensing, or the speaker, or the pointer in their game. You won't get developers working on the PS2 implementing Eyetoy functionality into their latest FPS or adventure game, because it's a waste of resources to add content like that without a guarantee that your audience will all have access to the necessary peripheral - or will be willing to buy it for your game.

With Wii, developers wanting to make games that use motion-sensing or direct-pointing have a guarantee that 100% of Wii owners have the necessary equipment so they have the freedom to make games that use the unique aspects of the controller in whatever way they choose. If the controller had simply been a GameCube peripheral, you might have had Nintendo producing a handful of games for it but no other party would touch it with a bargepole.

:: So what's the deal here? And yes, I am being thick. Do I need a wireless router or a LAN adapter to go online with the Wii?

If you have a wireless router, it should detect it and connect fine. I don't rememeber what happened precisely, but it should prompt you for your access point as it goes through the initial setup process. Once connected, the Wii will download the latest firmware updates.

When online you can exchange Miis and messages to buddies, and download VC games. News, weather the Opera browser and - thankfully - online games are due in early 2007.

If your wireless router isn't working, you may have to get a USB/LAN adaptor, which isn't available yet...

Hi All,
Mines wrapped up until xmas and I hardly touched it (didnt want to ruin the fun) so have a wee question.

When you get a retro game does it download onto memory (internal or card) or do you have to be connected webwise to play it?

I ask cos I dont have access in the house but was gonna use web at mates and get some if its possible. Solomons Key & Gunstar Heroes look tempting.

:: When you get a retro game does it download onto memory (internal or card) or do you have to be connected webwise to play it?

As I understand it, VC games can be downloaded onto your internal 512Mb memory or an SD card but each download is locked-in to the machine its downloaded on. So, you can't take VC games on a card to your mate's house, nor vice versa.

So, in your situation without net access, you'd have to take your Wii to your buddy's house and use that, rather than use his Wii.

the WII is amazing fun.
but we are waiting till likely september
(my birthday) next year for our upgrade.
weigh up the three systems.
make a choice from there.

we are big gamers my son and i. must admit the wii is wonderful fun, but the graphics are good enough for current gen. but next to the ps3 and xbox360. then its a whole differnt call.

but game play wise. its mental.the trauma centre 2nd opionon and the mario cart. will be the system winners i am sure.
next christmas will be the big test of this.i think the WII may well be the dark horse.

its a good price though isnt it.
and even cheaper out here, no VAT in malaysia. which makes is 17% cheaper. thats a fat chunk of change.

You can't play other people online yet - but you can exchange Miis and messages once you've have swapped codes. Amstor's is up there ^^^ and mine is 7630 5030 6777 8609.

Online games will come in early 2007, no doubt followed by the online-enabled Wii Sports 2...(!)

I really do like the design of the console itself.  It's just a white brick, like an external hard-drive for a pc or something.  The 360's contours bug me - like you REALLY need organic curves on a videogame console, as if it'll ever be anything other than a big-boy-toy.  And the PS2 was originally chunky but had odd angles sticking out, then the slimline one was just too flimsy.  Original Xbox's half-ton brick was some sort of monster used for the foundations of expensive techno-housing of the future, and the Gamecube was a box with a handle on the back - for reasons unknown.
I like the Wii design - it's made so you can slot it between the video/dvd player/tv and forget all about it.  I do wonder about the disc loading system, though - like an ATM or something.

PJ --

If you go into the messageboard - accessible from the Channels menu by clicking on the envelope at the bottom-right corner of your screen - you'll see an address-book icon on the lower-left side of the board.

Click on that & your address book will appear. The first page will show your console's number. To add someone else, click on register & enter their number & a nickname. Their name will remain greyed-out until they enter your code. Once you've both entered your codes you can then exchange messages, send each other Miis and - once the games start hitting in early 2007 - playing online.

It's relatively simple, but it does require you to either a) know the person you want to match up with or b) find a matchmaking site/message board online where you can swap codes.

Yeah, I think the design is another nod toward the wider, non-gaming audience. It's a nice, clean design that's unobtrusive in the way that a DVD player, set-top box or wireless router is.

Can't get over what a great idea the channels are, though. I've seen people who wouldn't usually touch a controller pick up the remote to have a play with the photo channel & Mii channel. It's a great way to get them used to handling a game controller & get them one step closer to playing themselves - which is exactly where basic titles like Wii Sports and Wii Play come in. The whole system is built around that progression from fiddling with non-game content, to playing basic games (even the photo channel has minigames built in!) and then onto the VC or full Wii games.

I've put the contoller in several non-gamers hands and told them to have a bash at Tennis and basicly sold several Wii's to my friends they liked the feel that much(good luck to them finding one though, none here anymore).
My main problem with it is the online system updates and stuff as I'm not online at home and refuse to get a P.C. can I just hook staraight up without a P.C to set it up, also heard it doesn't use much Bandwidth so if I hook it up can I hook my 360 up too(all this with out a P.C)?.

It is a cute little machine too, so sleek and just love the little angle tray they put it on stops you dropping disc's and stuff.  The HD-DVD player for the 360 looks bigger from the pictures.

Fav Wii Sport game would have to be Bowling, so much fun with mates even if you only have one controller.

:: ... can I just hook staraight up without a P.C to set it up, also heard it doesn't use much Bandwidth so if I hook it up can I hook my 360 up too(all this with out a P.C)?.

Having broadband without having a 'puter seems odd but I think it should be possible, depending on the model. Some routers need to be installed and set up on a PC, whereas some just work from the off.

However, even then you'd want access to the admin screens at some point - though this should be possible on the Wii itself when Opera is available (though you'd need a net connection to get it in rhe firast place!)

Being online seems to be a given to get the whole 360 experience - they're way ahead of everyone else here. Games, demos, movies, chat, webcams, you name it...

It's unlikely you'd have bandwidth problems unless you were downloading huge files to the Wii at the same time as the 360.

Also, can you justify the cost of a broadband subscription (plus the XBox Online subscription) without a PC?

In conclusion, I think you'd need to draw up a shortlist of routers and research this properly.

Unfortunately I am yet to own a Wii , but I have played it and it's one helluva machine . The control system is really easy to use , like second nature. Imagine a normal controller say a gamecube one and remove the the middle to make it have two parts , then that's what you have with the Wii controller ( not all the buttons though )it's that simple.I give it a great 10/10 for ease of use. It seems very well constructed and well thought out, three cheers to Nintendo.
Graphically it is not much of an improvement on the Cube but playability and instant addictiveness make up for these shortcomings. Zelda was a joy to play , Excellent!!
I hope to get one ASAP .

So what do you have to do to get DVDs to play? Wondering because it means one less bit of kit in the games room if it does DVDs as well.

At the moment the Wii doesn't do DVD playback - although the discs themselves are DVDs...

There's some debate as to whether the Wii has the hardware to be able to support DVD playback - in which case there would be room for Nintendo to perhaps add DVD playback as a software update in the future.

Dan
Title: Re: Got Wii?
Post by: The Amstor Computer on 14 January, 2007, 09:07:23 PM
As I understand it, the major obstacle to enabling DVD playback with a software update (a hypothetical DVD Channel) is that the audio out isn't up to standard for a DVD player.

There will be a version released later in 2007 with DVD playback out of the box, but it may well be limited to Japan-only, just like the DVD-enabled Panasonic Q version of the GameCube.

You may want to keep hold of those Vip points as you'll be able to swap them for Wii points soon and put them towards VC downloads...

Swap them for Nintendo points? In which case, I take back my cheeky request - I thought they were only good for getting printouts of Mario origami and such.

Nah - mbanners is bang on the money. When you set up your Wii you'll be asked to link it to your Nintendo online account. Each Virtual Console game you download will be logged in the same way that any games you buy and register are, and once the system is up & running you will be credited with Stars for each Virtual Console game you buy. Nintendo will also be adding Wii Points to the catalogue that you can buy with your accumulated Star Points, but it's not clear what each Wii Point will cost. As I've got several thousand Star Points, I'm hoping it will be a 1:1 ratio - that would be a good £40-50 worth of VC downloads :-)

It must be said I do love my Wii when I get a chance to sit down and play it.

Zelda: OK, so it's the same game - again - but when it's such a good game, you can't really complain.  The boss battles are fabulous.

Call of Duty 3: Jolly good fun if slightly on rails and repetitive.  I like the short fifteen minute chunks you can break it down into. Using the sniper rifle was great fun and having to" "hand crank" mortars and field guns seemed so right.

Wii Sports - Easter Sunday. My two brothers. Boxing. With a Mii Jesus. And a lot of beer. Hilarious like nothing else I've ever played on a console.

Wii Play - Tanks is brilliant. So is Shooting game. And how restful is the billiards?
Wii Vote - strangely addictive.

Wii Opera Browser - When we banned Teenage Tips from the PC for downloading too mucch pr0n, this meant he could still stay in touch with his mates on myspace etc.  Also Wiicade has loads of browser friendly games.

Super Monkey Ball - gaming crack.

Sonic and the Secret Rings - Tiny Tips quite liked this but I couldn't do with it myself.  Possibly the worst example of controls I've seen so far.

I've had no problem playing Gamecube games at all (though it doesn't like cheat discs) and it even takes the Bongos and the Dance Mat.

Other Stuff
I've used an SD card to display some photos so far but haven't managed to get it to play any MP3 stuff ('cos I don't have any on an SD card).

Not tried any of the mailing stuff too and from people yet.

Oh and I vaguely recall getting a mail saying taht they were going to start charging for the browser. Any idea when and how much?

I think my next purchase will be Resident Evil 4 Wii.  Any other recommendations?

Everyone should have a Wii.  And I'm saying that before they've even released SUPER MARIO GALAXY.

Any other recommendations?

Kororinpa -- Marble-rolling madness

Mercury Meltdown Revolution -- More rolling madness

Excite Truck -- A crazy-fast arcade racer with BIG TRUCKS

Eledees -- A fun, quirky little first-person puzzle/action game

Mario Strikers Charged Football -- The first proper online title and an utter blast in multiplayer

Warioware Smooth Moves -- Another hilarious multiplayer title, with dozens of utterly bizarre microgames

SSX Blur -- A solid snowboarding game, though with a bit of a steepish learning curve

BTW - try sticking with Sonic. It forces you to level up his skills and there are some frustratingly bad levels, but when you get him charged up (making the controls faster and more responsive) it will click.

Forgot to add:

Games due out in the next few months that will be worth a look --

Trauma Centre: Second Opinion -- a "Wiimake" of the great DS title, complete with extra content and Wii controls

Pangya Golf with Style -- A fully-fledged arcade golf game

Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree -- A home console version of the fun DS puzzler

Super Paper Mario -- The latest in the sublime Paper Mario series, this time with a more action-y style

Scarface -- A late-ish port of the GTA-alike featuring everyone's favourite foul-mouthed druglord. It was good fun on the PS2/Xbox, and while there doesn't seem to be any new content, Wii owners out for a dose of sandbox gameplay should take a peek

Manhunt 2 -- Ultraviolence, Rockstar style. Very gory, morally dubious stuff, but the first was a reasonably good stealth/action title & this is shaping up to be at least as good. Oh, and you can use the Wiimote to stab computer characters in the nuts, or garotte them with the Wiimote and nunchuk!

Also my DS broke. Again.:(

Nope. The Wii version has a smoother framerate and better aiming controls, but there's no substantial difference between the two titles. I love the Wii version and can't imagine going back to the GC setup, but I couldn't recommend it to someone who had already bought, played and completed the GC version - unless, of course, you can find it dirt-cheap and want to replay the game anyway.

I see...

On a similar note, does the Virtual Console take anything away from the original experience of the games on offer? I've been stuck on Ocarina for months now due to a series of dodgy N64 controllers, but I keep having a nagging feeling that the VC will be somehow inferior. (Obviously I'm a complete loon).
Title: Re: Got Wii?
Post by: The Amstor Computer on 05 June, 2007, 12:15:12 AM
The VC is, for the most part, perfect if you're just looking for faithful reproductions of classic games.

Nearly all of the games available are perfectly emulated, with only a very few hiccups, and they all look really, really good on a decent TV over SCART. Unfortunately, living in PAL land means we get the PAL versions of games, complete with slowdown and dodgy borders (as per the originals), but for a number of games efforts have been made to improve frame rate and bordering (mainly Nintendo's games - Sega in particular don't seem to give a toss and are just putting the games up as they originally appeared)

N64 games in particular have been a joy. Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Ocarina of Time and Lylat Wars/Star Fox 64 are all up and all look fantastic - Nintendo seem to have improved the resolution and smoothed out the framerate in all of them, and they look better than the originals in some respects. However, for some reason neither Memory Pak or Rumble Pak functionality is included at the moment, so games like Star Fox and Mario Kart are missing rumble and ghost times, respectively. If you can live without those features - or at least wait until Nintendo update their emulation - then these are fantastic versions of the N64 originals.

If you can live with some small issues and go in expecting emulation, not massive improvements/additions (as with Xbox Live Arcade) then you'll have a blast with the VC library.

What are these numbers you're all quoting? Where do I find mine? What do I do with yours/ mine?
Title: Re: Got Wii?
Post by: Dan Kelly on 05 June, 2007, 10:13:24 AM
From earlier in the thread... (by Amstor)

In fact the first online game's now available - Mario Soccer.

Looks like I need to add a few more codes.
Title: Re: Got Wii?
Post by: The Amstor Computer on 05 June, 2007, 10:24:34 AM
The numbers here are Wii system codes. You can find yours by going to the message board from the main Wii menu then opening up the address book. On the â??coverâ? there will be a note of your system code. If you want to exchange messages, send Mii or - in some games - exchange snapshots or levels, then you can enter a friendâ??s system code in your address book and have them add yours to theirs. Itâ??s a little bit time-consuming, but itâ??s definitely worth doing.
Title: Re: Got Wii?
Post by: The Amstor Computer on 05 June, 2007, 10:46:51 AM
Weird - beaten to the punch by an old quote :-)

As for Mario Strikers, it is online but because of the way the online system is set up you wonâ??t be able to use the system code.

Basically, Strikers lets you set up a number of different profiles for different users, using the Mii on your system as your avatar. Each profile you set up is issued with a new Friend Code which you can then exchange with another gamer & again once youâ??ve exchanged codes and added them to your Friend Roster in the game, you can play online. You can also play ranked matches which will pair you up against a random opponent at your skill level (based on matches played, wins, losses etc.) but these games wonâ??t require the exchange of codes, so you can just turn on, connect and start playing. You will also appear on the Striker of the Day leaderboards, as well as the Season leaderboards & if you happen to earn enough points playing ranked matches your Mii will appear at the log-on screen as the Striker of the Day.

There are rumblings that suggest that the code your Mii is given in Strikers will persist and will be the only code you will require for future online games, but thatâ??s still pretty much up in the air. Itâ??s not the most elegant solution, but itâ??s pretty effective in practice.

Sorry to be a pain, but once the codes are in, how do you know if folk are online?
Title: Re: Got Wii?
Post by: The Amstor Computer on 05 June, 2007, 02:15:21 PM
Well, you don't if you're just using the Wii address book/message board. You don't have instant messaging a la MSN, rather a kind of email system so any messages/Mii/pictures you send will be picked up by another user the next time they log on to their console. Even if I have your info in my address book and you have mine in yours, we still can't tell if the other is online, but anything you send to me will appear in my message board, Mii Channel etc.

However, for a game like Strikers, the lobby system is setup so I can see if any of my friends are online, whether they're currently busy & I can invite them for a match when they're free.

I'm still working through Zelda with Tiny Tips so that keeps me on the Wii just about everyday. It uses the extra motion sensitive aspects of the control just about perfectly - you never realised you weren't using it until you have to. It just sort of sneaks in and out exactly when required without screaming "look at me, I'm using a motion sensitive controller" in your face.

And as a family, we still drag out Wii Sports and Wii Play on a regular basis.  They are the sort of games that, because of the nature of the interaction with other real people, don't get tired.

But it must be said, I am waiting for a few more of the big name games to arrive.  Am I imagining the usual Nintendo software drought seems even worse than usual this time around?

100 Wii points per 400 Stars.  Once I've registered Metroid, Zelda and Brain Age 2 I'll be able to get at least 500 points to add to my 400 in the account already...

I was just about to buy some when my boy spotted the key rings...he's mad about Mario and the gang, so I spent them on him instead.  Wish I'd seen the Karts before they ran out though...excellent price on those!

Got a wii for my lady's chrimbo and she found it so it's now set up and I'm watching her pummel some poor jesus look-a-like in the boxing. I hadn't realized you got the sports with it, pleasantly surprised as I only bought her one game(Wario Ware).

The sports is great - now go get an extra controller with Wii Play if you can get one.

My housemates are addicted to bowling/tennis - but I think they're over that now...there's only so long you can mockbowl and stay fascinated

Just got -5 on the golf!

Could have been -7 but for a few tricky puts.

See the wii points: I gather they work like microsoft points on the 360? And did I pick up correctly that you can actually earn them in games and by registering games online?

The House of Wils and Malchi is finally Wiied-up now. Not online yet, though. Will wait till we change ISP next year and get a wireless router.

For anyone looking to get one, Wiis seem to now be in stock everywhere again, just in time for Christmas (Sony must be pig sick). The best deal on the high street that I've found (and where we got ours from) is HMV, where we got the Wii, 1 gig SD card, three games of our choice (Paper Mario for me, Zelda for Malchi, Alvin and the Chipmunks for the young'un) and Guitar Hero 3 with guitar controller for a gnat's bollock under £305.

I got Mario Party 8 as part of the bundle I bought from Game, is it worth playing at all or should I attempt to get it refunded?
