Davis's covers for this series haven't been as great as the interior art, where his use of vivid colour and strong composition are extraordinary. Pat Mills should write a series for Davis that's set entirely in the woods: every time Davis breaks out the green paint - from the Samain, to the encounter with the giant, to Slaine going First Blood on some Trojans - the quality of the art goes off the chart.

The pose and palette of this week's cover make me think Davis had this in mind:

Crickey! You think? I don't want to be too harsh on Davis' art as I think it has given Slaine a great new look & fits in with the character & settings brilliantly... I'm just not sure his cover choices have been the best when as you say Butch, the inside images have been so wonderfully vibrant!

Am I the only one who thinks the cover is poor?

It's way too dark for 2000Ad, (which Is supposed to attract new readers right?) a muted pallate and it's pretty static in it's image...

I've lost the plot with the story inside, where he's going, what was happening at the start of previous story & how it ties in with what he's doing now, it feels like I'm reading this monthly for how little is happening...

The title of this thread wasn't meant to be taken that literally!

It just sounded better than What back issue are you currently reading & is it any good?

Thanks Geoff for some sembalace of sanity!

I've just changed tack on the back progs after the Dredd/Aliens crossover... So decided to go back a bit & started with prog 888.

This saw the end of;

Luke Kirby - Sympathy for the Devil
Babe Race 2000

<<shudder>>

But also The Clown by Goldkind & Greg Staples, which I'd forgot was really really good!

Prog 889 was the one with the 2000 ADvert on the telly which you can find on Utube, way back in 1994...

...not the progs best years, but some gems amongst the poop...

Well done all, despite the multitude of scenarios possible, I found that actually made it harder!

Here's my top 3;

1) The Legendary Shark: Bladerunner - The 2000th Cut.

2) ZIPPO CREED: When The Chimes End.

3) Ursula K: Citizen Dink

All the best

I suppose the big unresolved thread remains the Sino-Cit thing, and it's obviously (and thankfully) never going to be resolved.

That was a funny one. Dredd was seen to be having a toughening up (by the SJS?) for this great threat to the city prophesised by Psi Div.

...seeing as Psi Div have been pretty useless since then on even forcasting thier own breakfast, I'm with you that it's one never to be resolved in the prog...

Okay that's very cool. Nick Dyer on anything is a good thing. On Ace Trucking it does seem particularly good news. Thanks for the pointers everyone.

I quite like Nick Dyers art, it's not groundbreaking but solid & reminds me of Cam Kennedy in a good way...

Ace Trucking Co.: Star's Truck by Eddie Robson & Nick Dyer

Eddie Robson on the other hand hasn't floated my boat at all. I wanted him to get some great stuff into the prog, but I've found his scripts to be way below par & sometimes just confusing without any fundamental realisation of the the story.

Sorry Eddie... here's hoping though.

A Life Flew Low Under The Cuckoo's Nest...

..."There are many here among us, who feel that life is but a joke " stuttered the dealer. His face began to turn crimson again, as he blew the same thirty-seven (or was it thirty-eight?) hairs from his eyes, before they fell back into place, waiting for the next spit laden updraught.

"An' you can quote me on that" he grimaced as blue humpbacked cards spilled out onto the Formica surface, "it's by Dylan Thomas, the singer see" he puffed.

A low drone emitted from the man mountain at the foot of the table, as he stuck out a huge paw to scoop a pile of concave cards into his playing hand. "Dirty Frank has Royalty!"  he declared, a broad smile cracking across his mattered brown beard.

"For Christs' sake Harding, how may times have I told you that you only deal two cards for Blackjack not three!" bellowed a small, red haired man. "Ya got me busted before we even started ya noodle brain".

The pinched, taught face of Dale Harding shook for a moment, before he raised his eyebrows and found the words, "It's not my fault I have to count in three's McMurphy, it's the crazy, the form the content, God and Heaven. Hell, I don't know maybe it's just plain superstition!"

"Superstition keeps Dirty Frank in a daydream!" bellowed the heavyweight sporting a battered eye-patch. He appeared very pleased with himself as he held his right hand aloft, a huge index finger trembling skywards.

"Seems big foot knows his music beter'an you Harding', smirked Randle McMurphy, his fingers running down a filter-tip cigarette. Why don't I deal and save us all from your peculiar allusions of musical crap and obsessive jerking off" he grinned, wildly rolling his eyes before picking up the deck of cards from the table.

Harding straightened up, his eyes peering over is half moon spectacles as he collected his two cards. "I wasn't jerking off McMurphy, or having trouble with my allusions", he said. "I can't tell you guys anything in here, you don't understand".

"Don't ever tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody". Dirty Frank was gazing mournfully now at Dale Harding, a tear journeying it's way down his weathered cheek.

"Sad is Dirty Franks song" he uttered in a broken voice before placing down his cards. The King of Hearts and the Ace of Spades.

"Hey, you've got blackjack!" yelled McMurphy, "God-damn! Ain't that something?"

Dirty Frank looked up at his friends, his face contorted in pain. The two cards adding to twenty-one were his undercover message to abort his mission. As he stood to leave the table, the two fellow players watched him slowly trudge towards Chief Bromden, who was leaning on a short bristled broom.

Harding blew his thirty-eight (or was it thirty-nine?) hairs from his eyes and whispered to no one in particular; "He was soon borne away by the waves, and lost in darkness and distance"...

1st - Bad City Blue & Darren Stephens - That's S-L-A-Y-E-D to You

2nd - Andy Lambert - Damp Justice

3rd - Banners - Hi-Ex!

The cover is a belter and set's up the story nicely for the continuing saga of Dredd vs Nixon.

This Dredd arc has to be the best for me since DOC and Rob Williams is the Dredd writer in waiting. He's been consistently brilliant his other work too.

Good to see Strontium Dog get going at last. I can't say that it's been comfortable reading of late and I'm not sure why we had to go where we went with Johnny, but I accept the strip is moving forward how Wagner wants it to.

Hopefully it will be to a bit lighter ground than of late. I've just re-read 'Roadhouse' and enjoyed the carefree interaction between Johnny & Wulf. God-help us if he gets magically dug up once again...

Grey Area is just awful & Slaine is getting tiresome again... I know it's not 'The secret commonwealth' standard, but lets face it it's not great is it?

The great voice that is Nadine Shah is this weeks musical gigette.

I'm seeing her at the Deaf Institute in Manchester, which I've never been to, but will be around my 15th venue in that fair city to watch gigs. looking forward to it, she's got a hell of a set of pipes...
