New Comic Book Day Megathread

The Maxx ... I have no idea as of yet what message it's trying to deliver, only that it's a bloody entertaining rollarcoaster of a ride in the process of finding out.

What you think we'll find out! I think we'll be working it out for years to come... gloriously.

Most deffinelty, but I must say, on a reread I might give #26 a miss. Not because it was bad or anything, far from it, just VERY hard to read, particularly it's final scene. Just mortifying.

Sorry I've been neglecting you chaps. I actually got my haul on Monday for various reason and read it by Tuesday but I've not told you all about it and I know how up set that must make you... well a little then... tiny bit miffed... oh well your standoffish attittude ain't stopping this rambler.

There's really only one place to start this haul and that's at an end. Fade Out 12 wraps things up in pretty brilliant style... I assume. While I really enjoyed this issue its fair to say Phillips, Brubaker and co have really created a novel here and this one will be judged fully when read as one. Still as a stand alone issue this conclusion was chilling supreme.

We get another conclusion in War Stories 15 and this quieter story (for an Ennis War Story) I think will stand up well to another visit, if I can get past the horrible art that is. Two other Ennis war tales (we really are treated well this month!) have no such problems, both Dreaming Eagles 1 and Johnny Red 3 are both as glorious to look at as their stories are fantastic. Particularly fond of the way Dreaming Eagles sets its stall and themes out early.

Black Canary 6 started to make me worry that the series might be heading more towards its superhero origins, no such problem as this series continues to offer a lot. Lazarus 21 gives us a surprise to keep us going while it as a bit of a hiatus, brilliant stuff. As is James Bond 3, Warren Ellis just gets how to make Jimmy story feel like the books and a film at the same time. Paper Girls 4 and Unfollow 3 continue to world build brilliantly and beautifully.

I'll give book of the haul to Ragnarok 7 just for the glory of having it back, Walt Simonson huh, now that man has some talent to spare or what!

Had a good day Monday (passing of geniuses aside) and that's reflected in the quality of a magnificent haul.

Little bit of comic catchup over the weekend.. so nice..

Providence 1-6 - Jebus. Great. Best Moore comic in ages. Nicely ramps up the sinister every issue and lovely use of repeated motifs. Even the backmatter is engaging and a swift read. Really excellent and I'm not a fanboy.

War Stories 4-6 - Ennis on a rif on the Valley of Tears from the Yom Kippur war. A Dredd in a Tank really, making the point that some folk know you can't get anywhere constantly invoking nazi's but some men, on all sides, are basically machines and they are the ones that hold the line. Really interesting comic and doing something important nobody else does. You wish more people of all ages would read these and think about the mix of action and thought that Ennis tries to bring.

Revival 32-35. Constantly a good story and art. No more than a well done TV series but still good stuff with 'Strong Female Characters' and all that stuff that other people seem to get more credit for.

CodePru 1 - Ennis doing Buffy v Lovecraft comedy. Purile in a good way. Not often you get a comic with a strap-on stuck in a door. Cthulhu behind bars isn't something you see everyday. He's rubbish at Monopoly too.

Section 8 #6 - Ennis once again (he gets to the top of the pile), getting to sign off with his 'Superhero comics are all ballix no matter how much you ask me back' line. Always love McCrea's art and have a fondness for Six-Pack although it was definately a return in the shadow of the superior Where Monsters Dwell. 

A Train Called Love 3 & 4 - More Comedy Ennis.. Doing what he does. Quite sweet. A tad decompressed but its worth the entry price.

The Twilight Children 3 - such a beautifully drawn and fun comic. Pretty good as an antidote to the horror of Providence. Probably best bought just to help wash yourself clean after the whole Mountains of Madness, reverso-rape, paedo sex, time warp gay murderers of Providence #6

This is Moore at his best, teamed with the best artist in the publisher's stable.
I'm lapping it up, and love the attention to detail woven into every stuffed to the -ahem- gills issue.

6 issues left, has the making of an all time horror classic.

Quite a small pull list this week, but thats OK because everything was ON FIRE!

No, really, my Ipad's gone up in flames. I have 6th degree burns all over my arms. Send help.

Usagi Yojimbo #151 is splender, and quite brilliant. Though it follows the typical stock Usagi trope where in he escorts a wealthy merchants son to his betrothed where upon they are ambushed by bandits, it's quite brillianty revealed why this specific and ever presents band of rogues can not allow the union to be met. The Spirit #7 is also a gem, a modern classic in the making and probably on any other week book of the haul. The mystery deepens and i'm glad to see the series head in original direction, now the regular rogues have all made their brilliant reappearance's, but I sure hope Wagner utilises The Octopus again at some point. He IS the essential The Spirit villein after all. Brilliant comics, just excellent.

Dreaming Eagles #1 almost completely passed me by, which would have been a shame as it's chuffing fantastic. Coleby can draw a good war comic like the best, and was hoping he would team up with Ennis ever since reading The Royals and his splendid depiction of The Spitfire. Along with Johnny Red i'm feeling right spoiled for quality war comics right now, i'm like a little kid in a sweet shop. Judge Dredd #2 is the only comic that really lets the side down, and don't think i'll pick up #3. It's not bad, really, but it's not my Judge Dredd, and after reading this weeks prog and meg i'm honestly wondering if I really need anything else.

I suspect Colin was very much excited for this, as was I. Nowhere Men #7 brings the series back and it's quite wonderful to behold, a true clusterfuck of a series with stupendous art and mind melting plot threads. People should deffinelty be reading this, it's ace. People should also be reading Tokyo Ghost #5 because it's basically what you get when you mash Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Mad Max and the best of Dredd together into one pulp package and serve it up with some phenomenal art work and mayhem ensues. Absolutely bloody brilliant.

Comic of the week however goes to the mighty Weekly Shonen Jump #7. Bloody hell, that was the best issue in sometime. Everything was absolutely on top form, World Trigger was a rousing coupe and really made all the slogging chapters prior worth the wait as all these recongisable face's come out of the woodwork to fend off the invaders, One Piece give's one of it's most detestable characters a streak of redemption then promptly kills him off by probably the only other truly contemptuous rogues, Toriko goes full on mad physics as Battle Wolf Guinness kicks the crude out of our hero's, My Hero Academia is ooooohhhhh sooooo gooood as Deku is forced to confront and do battle with one of Japans most wanted convicts one-on-one. And then theirs One-Punch Man. Good god, the art. Good fucking christ the art. Murata isn't even human, I swear. This is like Moebius level art, this is art I put on par with the like's of Flint, McMahon and MacNeil. The mans a genius. Read the Jump, people. Read it right now.

You know me too well. I really must get the first 6 issues out for a re-read before my next visit to my LCS to get back into the swing of things. When this was first being published it was without doubt my favourite ongoing series.

Just finished Astro City #31 don't know who here reads it but for my money it is one of the best written superhero comics out their today.

I think you're going to love #7 then, a cracking return to the series and a nice bomb shell cliffhanger. I too, have a mighty urge to dig out the first trade and give it a read again. Alongside Copperhead and Egos as one of the best Image titles right now.

Funny, I've recently read the entire Life in the City series and I concure it's quite brilliant. Must get around to buying the rest of the series soon...

Let me take a second to possibly turn some of you folk's attention to a series called Copra. Written and Drawn by aquantance of mine Michel Fiffe its a bombastic super-hero story that combines elements of the Suicide Squad and other more cosmic super-hero universe stuff. It's making its ComiXology debut after several years of being self-published by Fiffe himself . He took a lot of pride in pumping out a monthly print comic by mail order.

Personally I read the first 6 issues in print, but had to give it up because I got off print comics. Its a great series, and its great to have more accessible digitally. The first six issues are avable digitally now, with more rolling out soon. I highly recommend it.

Also, here's a Savage FINcast episode that I and my FINcast Co-hosts conducted with Michel Fiffe, back in... jeez 2013? Damn, we need to have him on again.
