I think you'll find the general consensus to be something like my own view:

They're great pictures.  But get over yourself, there's a lot of good artists on this board.

Sweet Millarworld. And wow so many replies already. Have you got any idea how long it took to get this many on Millarworld. I'm writing a comedy sketch at the minute about !"£$$£" presenting a "£$£""£ "£$%$£". By writing though I mean it's all written in my head, just need to type it. It'll be on Millarworld.

The drawing is well-proportioned and three-dimensional. The figures have a convincing weight. I can't say I care for the one with the big arms, but that's no fault of drawing ability. This kind of drawing has a use, and probably a commercial one at that. Good luck with it.

your drawings have a nice flow overall and the first one shows some good colour sense. I'm not sure about your anatomy (I KNOW it's exaggerated, I KNOW your probably going for something other than human), the structure of some of it ( hips especially) take me out of it, I'm not asking for realism, but believability.

Apart from that your avoiding your main weaknesses, or the hard bits by taking shortcuts on the feet and hands. Either with 'manga boots' or using weird mechanical stuff. You need to nail these things, they look fine on a blank sheet of paper but as soon as you try and place that figure in a 3d space with wonky feet it won't work.

Sorry if this all sounds harsh but I REALLY am trying to help. you may not be quite there yet but you can be, and that takes the ability to look at your own work objectively and welcome this sort of stuff, I hope you get what i'm getting at

all the best

Unfortunately I'm not an arse. Unless I am. In which case I draw...quite...well.

It's not really a shortcut or avoidance, I'm ust trying to be interesting. I practically only read Japanese comics. I can't stand drawing naked men like American books. I see enough hot muscular me in the mirror. I wouldn't mind if I woke up tommorow drawing like Hiroaki Samura or Yoji Shinkawa though. Infact it might help people concentrate on the designs, but I'm still going to be drawing crazy junk aswell, too many people will always be doing realistic stuff better. The world only needs so many Jim Lees. They look a lot better than when I start a few months ago though. I used to draw feet on backwards. I'll take it on board, especially if I think of something that needs to look real. I like Otomo too for this.

Quote...but please, let everyone know how good it is first, so they'll know if it's worth reading or not.

Bet your ass I will

But that's what it's meant to be, isn't it? It's a sub-genre. It seems to be coming out of his arsehole rather than his pubis. Perhaps it's a tail. I won't say it's not well drawn, whatever it is.

Objectivity seems to be the name of the game on this board, fair play to it.  For example, most people seem to think John Byrne is a cock of the first water, but many of the same people like his work. I've never read it. It's probably shit, though, because he's such a cock.

I'm not sure these portfolio pieces are getting any better, especially the weirdy demon-thing with one arm longer than the other. The best thing about is there's no mistaking the direction in which its head is pointing. There's nothing else I like about it.

The flying boots woman is really well drawn up to her bottom rib, after which I've lost sight of her under a lot of space helmet, stuck-on boobs and giant arms. The pose doesn't ring true. If she's getting propulsion from her feet, there's no reason she would turn her body like a corkscrew under the weight of all that exo-skeleton gubbins; she would strain something. It would make a lot more sense for her just to alter the thrust of her jet boots if she wants to look behind her in mid-air.

You have a good style, which recalls Frank Miller from 25 years ago for me. You owe it yourself to get good at drawing real people with real anatomy and faces. Also I'd suggest trying to make this all make sense by giving your designs a rationale instead of just drawing cool stuff. What does it all mean? What is it you're drawing? I suppose that's all in your writing.

The youtube clip is just horrible, by the way. I'd rather just see the still of the tank inspired by Tetsuo than hear voices going 'bleb bleb bleb' over it.

The edit buttons gone now. I think I was meant to copy the link next to it. The space one I drew from life which went wrong because the woman that I drew it from had the longest skinniest bendiest (but really hot) body I have seen. Drawing from life is a real pain for this because not many womens legs are exactly 3 heads long. People are getting taller and 4 heads for legs isn't uncommon. Myleene Klass' body is more tham 3 heads long by a little bit and so do a lot of other people. That thing they teach were your arm span is the same as your height obvioulsy isn't true because I watch the UFC and often fighters of the same height have different armspans. Wanderlei silva has arms as long as people 4 inches taller. Not many people are exactly like what they teach at school. Those measurements were just Greek ideals I think. All I can say is that it looks exactly like the woman it was drawn from, from that angle her breasts looked higher than one head and with foreshortening her legs did look big but I've stopped drawing from life now because it doesn't look right for this sort of thing which is why I wanted to get rid of it.
Any other technical issues are just exaggeration and style.

I'm still appreciating any and all comments though.

I think your problems are highlighted here. Drawing from life will improve your drawing of the things you pull from your imagination as well, because they will be grounded in reality, if that makes sense. Also, the second comment I've highlighted is very dismissive of any crits that may come your way! For the record, though, I quite like what you've posted so far.

Those manga guys you love so much (I love them too! shinkawa= the best) have a depth to their style which isn't forced but comes from being a good draughtsman first. The sooner you challenge yourself and stop taking shortcuts and calling it 'style' the better. A good 'stylised' piece doesn't come from the artists shortcoming in draughtsmanship. All those artists you quoted me learnt the fundamentals first, from 1000's of drawings from life i bet. You need to know something before you can simplify it, so many people who like comics and manga miss this point, get to a lifedrawing class. I understand your point about being another Jim Lee clone, I don't want to be that either! But the sloppy style guys (Shinkawa,Wood, Murphy) make it look easy because they can draw like a classical artist first.

Keep ignoring your weaknesses and you might end up the next Liefield instead.

good luck

And accusing an artist of copying without evidence is just the worst insult. An artist that doesn't have any originality is about as useful as a car with no wheels. And at a professional level it could be considered libellous. I'd like to see some evidence. Even if that one there is a bit like the thing. But I added to it. It's the resident evil version of multi handed on the same arm Minotaur I was drawing so they could have swords and a bow.

Am I the only one who gets a bit irritated when randoms just barge in and start a thread and fill it with their (non-2000ad related) artwork?

We have a thread where we can share our work - it is here:

http://www.2000adonline.com/forum/index.php/topic,27612.465/topicseen.html (http://www.2000adonline.com/forum/index.php/topic,27612.465/topicseen.html)

Doing it this way comes across as a little arrogant and is borderline spamming, in my opinion.

It all depends.
Depends if they're friendly, warm and open to constructive critisim from other, professional I might add, artists on the boards.

2000ad-related art would probably be received more favourably on this board than non-2000ad stuff.
Personally, I have no real love for manga-style art, but I appreciate that others do.

I am jealous.

Jealous of your youth and sparkling personality, though time, and therefore experience, will take care of both

And given time you may be a really good artist.

If yer looking to disagree with every thing anyone says, then you'll just end up with people not bothering with your posts.

There are artists and writers already here aplenty who post stuff up to the admiration of us all, who behave with gratitude and humility for any feedback they get. It's far easier to look at their work and not have to put up with defensiveness and 'I'm right, you're wrong' posts.

If you won't accept feedback, you likely stop getting any- it's a simple formula. We're a laid back bunch who can't be arsed with 'teh-internut flame-wars' that go on elsewhere (most of the time).

Sure, some folks are having a mild stir at ye, but understandable due to your reactions; it's the internet, man- burning angry ants with a magnifying glass is vaguely amusing for a short while.

Have a look through the 'HOT DANG DOODLE' thread, the Does my art look big in this?' thread and the Dredd Head thread etc in the Creative Common section for a bit. Maybe even have a go at adding to them.

It's excellent and constructive advice. You've a gob on you and a bad attitude -- you're pulling the same shite on Millarworld, where you already seem to be noted for it. There are a LOT of professional comic creators on this board, including me.

Now, I may only be a humble letterer, but occasionally I do have conversations with editors. Imagine one where they say "Damn, the artist on this book has just dropped out on me and my go-to guy is on holiday. Any ideas?"

A recommendation to an editor from someone already working in the industry is worth a lot, but do you really think anyone's going to recommend you when you come across as an argumentative gobshite, even if your work was ready for the big time, which it ain't?

Being professional is about more than just the standard of your drawing.

Cheers

An artist that doesn't have any originality is about as useful as a car with no wheels.

I would say yes and no to that comment as it depends what kind of art you are talking about but its all too easy to overstate the importance of originality to the extent that its overcompensating for a lack of general competence but sometimes it does work and its worked well enough in music as there are plenty of examples but ultimately its up to you how good you want to be as an artist as shying away from life drawing because figures dont always match up to the Greek ideal which is fallacious anyway is just a copout because a competent artist who is able draw figures isnt restricted in that way because they know how it all works.

Now that seond piece i actually really like and its the closest i have seen of your art that is developing into something that actually works and its far better than your colored art.I dont know WTF its meant to be but it flows really well and i think you deserve a certain amount of credit for being original and apparently not caring about what anyone else thinks to the point that you completely reject advice.

When it comes to drawing stuff I know nothing. But I know what I likes.

So some folks say: those hands look wonky, or it looks like it's going to topple over, or it's going to topple over. Me, I just don't see it.

My fundamental concern has been voiced by Rich and Emperor as "do more sequential stuff." But I'll go further:

these are very pretty, and I think pretty good, but what is the point of them?

This is a website for a comic (I originally wrote comic website, but that's a whole other story). Where are the comics? Where are the stories? The problem I have has nothing to do with style, or anatomy, or anything arty-farty. It's more mundane stuff about what makes up a comic:-

1 - These are terribly and overly complicated designs. Why?
2 - Could these be sustained in a comic strip without the page getting messy and confused?
3 - Can you actually tell a story in pictures?
4 - Would you be happy working with a writer? Sometimes the guys that write the stories have their own ideas about what should be on the page. Given the obvious love and attention lavished on the samples here, would you be happy to bow to someone else's view? What if it was needed for the story?
5 - Can you draw mundane stuff? I mean that quite, quite seriously. Show us a page where a man and woman having a coffee have an argument, then make up. Show the emotion on their faces. The anger, the resentment, the love. Because not all comics are boom-boom bang and robots. There's the odd quiet bit (those writers, they have these fancy ideas about "character" and "plot development" and they need a bone thrown at them every now and then with the odd talky bit (see 4 above)).

Normally, I shy away from any kind of comment on anyone's art. As I say, I only know what I like.

For me, these are good pictures. But they ain't right for comics.

I'd add, that if you don't see what I am getting at, then I worry you don't understand what goes into a comic. And you need to know that to even begin making them. THEN you need to be able to draw fingers.
Title: Re: I am the god of drawing, enjoy
Post by: Dunk! on 30 July, 2010, 09:54:11 PM
Why is it copying?

Easy.

'Cos you're not offering any images, just weird random collages of other peoples stuff. They make no sense, and have no weight. Chaotic messes of different images with no purpose. In one you have a complete body at the centre (minus the head which is hard to grasp) with quite good anatomy, in another you couldn't grasp anatomy if you'd been promised the family dog would lick your balls if you managed it.

Draw a woman crying.

Draw a child laughing.

Draw something 2000ad related FFS.

There's a really obvious reason that you're roundly ignored on Deviant Art.

Take advantage of the dozen or so artists on this forum who i'd happily sit at the feet of and learn what it is to draw comics from. Why don't you listen too?

And for those who hold to the opinion this is the "friendlist place on the web": sorry, not in this case.

Dunk!

PS: Cheers, RAC.

Well that's it really. I'm not too fussed. If you leave comments I might listen to them. I don't have too. You don't have to look either. Like I said all comments are really welcome but I don't see why I have too reserve the right to reply. I'm just doing this for fun. As for being 2000ad related I see 2000ad as a creative place where creators often create totally new worlds and stories.

http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac167/thehappyskull/SKMBT_C20310073008591.jpg

This is a comic example. I just got bored. It's pretty boring drawing those buildings. I am confident though that it is an example of how these characters could work in a book. Not that I would really care if it didn't. Can I draw mundane stuff, sure, would I personally want to read that, not really.

I'll probably just post images now though. So they're there if you like. I'm not even asking for money or anything.

You didn't hurt my feelings -- I have a thicker skin than that. You did annoy me, though, because you were acting like a dick, same as you are here, which is the only reason I brought it up. On this board, you have the eyes and ears of a number of comic professionals, and a fair number of people directly involved in the games industry, too.

Congratulations, then -- you've just given most of them good reason never to hire you or recommend you to other people who are looking to hire. So what was the point of this thread? You weren't interested in feedback, your samples certainly aren't good enough to have people beating a path to your door with exclusive contracts, and you've demonstrated to anyone reading who might be in a position to do you a favour professionally that you're a gobshite with an attitude problem.

The sound you now hear is your future career burning to the ground.

Thank you for playing.

Cheers

Travis, your stuff is alright and shows some promise. It's quite imaginative in places. Not sure what you want to do though really, can't see much of a desire in any of your stuff to tell a story and that's pretty important if you want to be a comic artist. Some of the figures that pop up now and again are nice but I haven't seen many decent faces.
It's ok to say you just want to do stuff your own way, but it's going to be pretty difficult to make a living that way. To make money you have to be an artist for hire and that means drawing what someone tells you to draw and, to varying degrees, how they want you to draw it.

Why should you only be allowed to draw humans if you want to draw something else.

Anyway I'd just like to say thankyou for the more considered comments. I think someone said that sometimes a cartoony style distracts them from design, which I hadn't thought of, so I've taken that on board for certain designs. Bunch of other stuff to Id like to say thankyou for.

This is pathetic. The board is a shadow of its former self.

The Trout calling for calm and moderation? How low he has fallen...

I'm pretty good at drawing- I think I'm always going to fall slightly short of being a god though.  Which is ok.

I wish it was 2003- when I was allowed to be cruel and vindictive without a bunch of whiney twats bleating on about it.

I once illustrated an article about how teenagers' brains are wired up wrong and they are effectively mental until as late as their early 20s.  So I won't.

That would be a good argument if Travis was a teenager.

Go around threatening people like that in real life you'l get arrested or beaten up. There's nothing wrong with having a bit of confidence either btw. Go run around hating on people taking jokes badly. who cares

eh?  who's been threatening him?

That's how I would write if Fred Durst had been my English teacher.

Well that's it really. I'm not too fussed. If you leave comments I might listen to them. I don't have to. You don't have to look either. Like I said all comments are really welcome but I don't see why I have to reserve the right to reply. I'm just doing this for fun.

I'll probably just post images now though. So they're there if you like. I'm not even asking for money or anything.

Grud help me, I can't help admire the kid's attitude.

The sad fact is he's got that much self belief/arrogance he'll probably make it, and the joke will be on us.

I'm guessing it's more a case of trying out a cool new cocky online personality, then realising he can't take the heat.
still, all he did was make a few silly and annoying comments on a website about a comic - it's hardly Dahmer and Gein territory. I wouldn't wish failure on him for that. And once again, a few flaws aside, I think his stuff is alright.

I think the whole thread started on the wrong foot due to the title 'I am the god of drawing, enjoy', it was an open offer for abuse really...

I think it was more a case of turning up on a new website and starting a thread with a tongue-in-cheek title that people took too literally. Humour being such a tricky thing to convey online, especially when you are new to a site.

Pity as I rather enjoyed his over-the-top art (so many hands, arms and eyes!!).

Just read the whole thread and it's quite a ride.

I was hoping that he might draw some mundane stuff so we could gaze upon this God's wonderous skills but alas he has climbed back up his own backside
