Team Classic vs. Team Current
Only work for Tharg to be Considered

What a way to end this. For me this vote is a important as the one that started the competition with two titans of the comic. One who left us when he was fully formed to great, great things... mind he wasn't half good when he was here. The other came to us when he was fully formed and has stayed to take us to worlds beyond or imaginations on a regular basis. Damn this is a stinker to end on...

Remember for this tourney you have 5 votes to distribute as you please between these two artists, whole numbers only. So you can vote 5 - 0; 4 - 1; or 3 - 2; either way depending on how much more you like one artist's work over the other.

If you can't be doing with that just name your favourite - remember bold tags, or other ways of highlighting always appreciated - and I'll give them 3 votes and nowt to the other droid.

Three day votes, so this one ends morning of Friday 16th July when this whole damned thing wraps up!

Remember we only consider work for Tharg in these Tourneys

Only work for Tharg to be Considered

Last week and last two vote that can't affect the outcome, but will determine the nature of the victory for Team Current. Pride to play for and all that for Team Classic.

Few writers will divide comic fans opinion as much as Grant Morrison, pretense or preacher? The same is true in 2000ad and for Tharg (the only thing that concerns us forget ya Animal Man, Doom Patrol or Batman), but at his Zenith there is little denying he plays with the Gods. Alec Worley path under Tharg's tutorage recent thrill like the reinvention of Hookjaw and Black Beth in the special seem to indicate that as we go forward Alec will be providing many great treats.

Last tie of the last full week and it's a duzzy. Si Spurrier is one of many writers who have learnt their craft at Tharg's feet and then gone on to make names for themselves in other Universes. Due to that this work for Tharg can be a bit hit and miss, but is never anything less than interesting. Michael Carroll crafted his place in Tharg's army via Dredd and quickly became a very, very strong writer of the comics lead. More recently however he's started to spread his wings a little with Dreadnoughts and Proteus Vex showing he is so much more than just a wonderful Dredd writer.

Interesting draw this one. Two writers who might not have set Tharg's minions hearts on fire but also represent writers who worked hard to have returning works that defy online and visible opinion.

Nikolai Dante is probably the greatest strip 2000ad has ever known [option]. Shakara ain't bad either... So the degree of the challenge facing Rory McConville isn't to be underestimated. That said Rory has achieved that hardest of feats of crafting a place for himself as one of the stable of modern Dredd writers and he does give very good Dredd. Add to that new thrills like Department K and his work might well hold up well here?

So Team Classic rolls out one of their big hitters in response their increasingly precarious situation, the question is can Team Current offer an answer to that... welllll....

Alan Hebdon wrote Meltdown Man - so much more, but a classic like Meltdown Man will define this vote for many. Dan Abnett won the Godpleton Cup and ... well we know how much he's done...

Team Classic vs. Team Current
Only work for Tharg to be Considered

The third week starts with a Team Classic desperately needing another win, and quickly, but judging by this tie they still have some popular names to pull out the hat to give them that.

I played a wildcard for Team Current here. I think Kenneth Niemand's continued output over the last year might well have pushed him into the places by right BUT I'm far more lazy than AlexF and didn't check. However his work on Dredd, Chimpsky and Megatropolis mark him as possibly the most important find of recent years. And then having given him that place the draw puts him up against the writer of some of the comics most popular strips ever, Rogue Trooper, Harry 20 and so many more... I fear my vote on this one will get me run out of town!

Gordon 'Sunshine' Rennie is a real heavy weight of modern 2000ad. He's produced so many long running series, many of which are considered classics. In many ways his dark edgy tone defines the modern Prog and anchors it to the past at the same time. He's created and explored his own worlds and played with gleeful bitterness in worlds created in 2000ad's long history. It's easy therefore to think his volume alone will swamp that of John Tomlinson, but I'm alway surprised by just how much John wrote for the Prog, thinking of him as I do as the Armoured Gideon fella. That rudely dismissed Mercy Heights, Tor Cyan and more. The fact he's started to craft one offs again for Tharg makes me wonder will he be Team Classic for too much longer?

This is the tie I added to remove an injustice of missing Hilary Robinson from Team Classic. And injustice it is too as she did some fantastic work for Tharg. I'm a big fan of both Zippy Couriers and Medivac 318. Both successfully brought a different tone and much needed variety to the Prog. And this makes her a figure that divides options. David Hine I suspect divides opinion almost equally. He too provides different tones to his work (and remember we're only thinking about writing here, so ignore David's art) but for me his recent work on Dark Judges for the Megazine have been real show stoppers and truly excellent.

Look I promise not to say anything like '...but Hope springs eternal...' during this intro.

So if Team Classic's aim in the first week was to try to draw the sting out of Team Current's powerhouse of writers and then come big, well they are certainly living up to that as after John Smith no lesser light than the wizard of Northampton, The Scribe with the Snake is fielded next. Can Guy Adam conjure up some magic of his own, after all as they say Ulysses Sweet springs eternal and we can't expect the Max Normal... ahem... anyway...

The second week is important for Team Classic, they only got their first point with the last tie of the first, another week like that and believe it or not Team Current will be just one tie away from an other all victory already. So Team Current need to build on that first victory quickly.

This tie exposes one of Tharg's great shames, something he is trying to get right now BUT Emma Beeby is the first female Droid in this tourney and one of only 2 overall. Tharg needs to do better and is trying. Its cruel then that she is drawn against one of Tharg's most missed sons.

Prog / Prog 2238 - Dead stop!
26 June, 2021, 07:48:42 PM
How do very good Progs become great Progs you ask... come on someone must... well I'll tell you anyway. They do it by finding those little somethings to creep everything (well almost) up just a notch and Prog 2238 does just that.

Dredd - well okay Dredd just remains wonderful leading us down the procedural path with Dredd and the murder scheming with Bick... seriously though its no coincidence that Biba's body replacement was called Ingrid - so close in Inga - this is Wagner cursing the fact he killed off PJ - right???

Aquila finds a notch and hitches up the thrill pole. What a way to start a thrill, sneaking into hell, stopped by titans and hordes of undead. I meaning talk about opening big! But also smartly dangles us a little mystery - just who is that (not) masked archer?

Department K slips further up the Thrill Pole by bursting out its full remit. Going full on hyper-real Kirby style. Just fantastic. Then brought gloriously crashing back down the little character piece with Blackberry. Some folks don't seem to be getting on with this thrill. For the life of me I don't know why its magnificent.

Skip Tracer see damnit its doing ti again. This is fantastic - except its not - its cutting to the thrills without taking breathe. Its moving along at a thrilling action packed pace... its just in this case it shouldn't. It needs to stop a second, take a moment and make us care before hurtling along at break neck speed like that.

How often is there a magnificent Wagner and MacNeil Dredd and its not the best thing in the comic... only when its Chimpsky O'clock it would seem. Chimpsky's Law crankles the fun up to thrill-power overload. Throws the chuckles at us with break neck speed and then has the genius slam on the breaks and remind us why we do care in this case. As Chimpsky meets his... well read it and see. Its just brilliant.

All this is beautifully tucked behind a cover that is fantastic even by Cliff Robinson's standards. Damn how many has he done lately - even by his prolific form he's cranking them out.

Superb Prog.

Steve 'No relative' Moore is possibly best known by some as the mentor to Alan 'Also no relative' Moore - which is a shame as it utterly underplays his contribution to the Prog. For many the master of the done in one, introducing Future Shocks* AND Tales of Telguuth to the Prog. He's a true legend of the UK comic scene. Peter Hogan on the other hand has probably done some of his most famous work (outside of Tharg's so not relevant here) spinning off from the work of Moore. His recent contribution to Zaucer of Zilk, which qualified him for this tourney shows that with Tharg however bumpy his road he's still a class act.

Whatever we think of Mark Millar there's no denying he's gone on to become one of Tharg's highest profile alumni so he's doing something right and he learnt how to do that in the pages of 2000ad. Kek-W can be rewritten off as a take-over writer - a trend he kicked off taking over from Mark Millar in fact on Canon Fodder BUT he's clearly so much more than that and has become one of Tharg's mainstays in recent years.

Alan McKenzie is a bit of a controversial character around these parts, but we shouldn't let that distract from how great Summer Magic was (and the whole Luke Kirby series come to that), Brigand Doom helped keep the Prog buoyant during dark times and Soul Gun Warrior was a mercurial delight. All that said when it comes to Pete Milligan we could just say Bad Company BUT his recent work which qualifies him for Team Current, Counterfeit Girl  show him as still relevant today.

Oh and on a side note Alan McKenzie is already our second Alan, there are many more to come... I mean it's not relevant but Jez the Alan's are the writers equivalent of Simons for the artists! Ahem... Anyway...

There will be many occasions when emphasizing that we are only thinking about work within Tharg's Sphere is being considered (see the rules link below for details) but few when it will be more relevant. Both these writers have gone on to have astonishing careers in the US and across comics. Here though we are considering a subset of that work. So however good I think War Stories / Battlefields are, however much I love UnFollow I will be banishing them from my noggin and focusing on work like Troubled Souls (I count Crisis) and Low Life here.
