Quite strange read. Strong Glenn Beck/Alex Jones-vibes. Everything in the movie is apparently linked to the united states of America, even Anderson's hair colour :eh:

The reviewer actually later admitted (on the Empire podcast) that he should have given it four stars.

Well, I have to applaud his honesty then.  I don't understand why they can't update their reviews if they feel they were too harsh / kind to a film though.

I am pretty sure they do that sometimes. I swear Predator was listed a 5 star film at some point, maybe for the blu-ray release or something but on their website it is 4. Slack jawed faggots.

They should give Dredd 4 stars for the dvd/blu-ray release.

That's twice today I've seen you use homosexual slang as a negative, you should consider that some gay people might be offended by it.

Fisticuffs

'Slack jawed faggots' is a prominent quote from Predator, so I doubt it was meant nastily.

Sorry. Yeah it was a just a funny insult Blaine uses in Predator when people refuse to have some of his chewing tobacco. Great scene.

Not sure what the other one was.

Hmm, something went wrong with the quote. But anyway, sorry.

Interesting analysis of Anderson and Ma-Ma by Alyssa Rosenberg. The same Alyssa who assisted an analysis America on Dredd Reckoning.

Someone with the username WhatCulture just posted on the IMDB Dredd forum that they have an interview with Pete Travis pending. Assuming they're a representative of the site of the same name, that'll be worth keeping an eye on.

"The surprising 95% Rotten Tomatoes rating and the presence of Cersei Lannister as the primary villain (!!!), however, were enough for me to give it a try"

"95% Rotten Tomatoes rating". Those were the days, eh?

"After watching Dredd, I realised that the reason why it seemed so... weird, I guess... is that it didn't follow the kind of predictable cliches I was expecting. This type of movie -- especially one with an adults-only rating -- usually has very poorly-drawn characters and a lot of throwbacks to grindhouse cinema, but despite Dredd's plethora of extreme violence it never really went that route. Although it has the basic plot of a shoot-em-up videogame, the decision and emotional reactions made by the characters were far, far more intelligent and realistic than other movies of the genre"

Cheers for that, Hula; I'll keep it in my pocket for the next time clr03f starts banging on about how this film only appeals to teenage boys.

Good idea! But it seems like if he's absent from IMDB now. Could be he's learning german towards the premiere there or writing material for the bluray/dvd release? Hopefully I'll never need to know.

But to the analysis itself. Love it that the movie is gaining momentum with women. Gives me hope that I'll someday find the perfect lady, who also happen to like DREDD tihi.

Dredd opened in Gemany and Switzerland yesterday. Rooting around for German press on the film, I've had to use google to translate any phrase much more complicated than 'Dredd is a film'. It's not perfect, but you get the jist and it's often unintentionally funny. The film seems to be getting the same mostly positive reviews there as it has everywhere else, but we all know by now that doesn't translate (ahem) into box office:

"Rampant remake craze in Hollywood makes even before the most dubious genre classics not stop. Action and sci-fi editions, prequels, sequels - from "A-Team" to "Total Recall" remains in the drawer of history nothing is hidden any longer. So now "Dredd", and even in 3D. The supposed Yawn is based loosely on the then verrissenen but commercially successful "Judge Dredd" from 1995, starring Sylvester Stallone in the lead role. And who now expects dull action, much banging and little action, the suspects only half the story.

U.S. East Coast, in the distant future: The civilized world as we know it no longer exists. The people live in a few mega-cities. The largest of them, Mega City One, extending from Boston to Washington, DC. Murder, corruption and designer drugs influence daily life of 800 million inhabitants. Gangs reign responsible streets and skyscrapers, six crimes per minute, 17,000 per day. In one of these skyscrapers Ma-Ma ruled (nice greasy: "Game of Thrones" star Lena Headey). Their mercenaries take on any floor or the power of the other bands. A case for law enforcement Judge Dredd (Karl Urban), who will, with beginner and medium Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), released at his side, in the high rise of Ma-Ma fair game. But the course has made her statement without Dredds robotic fighting spirit and tenacity.

The story of "Dredd" represents only the basic settings - Post Apocalypse, megacities, Judges - his Hollywood template "Judge Dredd". The plot is a different, duller without twin brothers from the test tube and Desert Exile. It is action packed, but the genre unfortunately, nothing new: In the summer, only turned in the Indonesian martial arts film "The Raid" is all about as high a body count, and a special unit to fight their way through a controlled by a drug cartel skyscraper needs.

"Dredd" still works. Not only because it is well known in action movies only secondarily comes to the plot. Because of the little subtle social critique? Also given. No, because of his splatter ends, hyper-realistic and thus more comic and manga-related design and a gloomy colorful imagery that is more carnage than scary. Contrary to fly like the audience in the cinema hall blood, body parts and bullets in that slow-motion, which also take the junkies in the film: This justifies the 3D production and shows finally, what can the technology if it is used for more than just a few extra dollars to make at the box office.

A real hero has "Dredd" to be recorded yet: Karl Urban confident in a Leading Role, whose face remains hidden for 90 minutes under a protective shield of the helmet. Judge Dredd has therefore nothing but the expression below the nose - and his mouth in order to tap his voluntary and unintentionally comical sayings. And that would have the Sylvester Stallone, the Judge Dredd of time, personally can hardly manage better."

The Stallone film wasn't commercially successful and the comedy from Dredd's dry, sardonic quips is entirely intentional; Germans are usually so much more efficient and thorough than this, but it's still a decent review. Anyone know what particularly German quality the Stallone film embodied that is signified by the untranslatable word 'verrissenen'?

Description of Rob Schneider?

That make sense. I don't think there's a word in the English language that adequately describes Rob Schneider either.
