How many Judges are there?
« on: 07 May, 2012, 07:19:55 PM »
This is pretty much off the top of my head, but I've been wondering about it for a while. Feel free to pick holes in all of my guesswork.

Lets start with the basics.
MC1 has a population of 400 million.

It's divided up into sectors (I can't remember how many) each of which contains a sector house.
Each sector house is fairly well equipped and we have to assume some sort of tek and med facilities.
Each sector house also has some SJS facilities, but I'm not sure if they are staffed permanently.

Let's say for a round figure, a sector house has 100 judges. If we have approx 40 million cits in one sector, that gives us 100 sectors and so 10,000 Judges in sector houses.

BUT we also have other specialised judges:
Psi
Tek
Med
PSU
SJS
Wally Squad
Accounts
Judge Tutors at the academy
"Desk Judges"
(Are isoblock guards judges?)

We have to assume that all of these "specialist" Judges are pretty numerous. Are there more of them than street Judges? For arguments sake, let's say the numbers are equal, so another  10,000 Judges.

I'm assuming med & meat wagon drivers are cits or at least non-Judge level Justice Dept employees.

We also "know" that quite a lot of street Judges are killed off in the line of duty. I we said a weekly? "wastage" of 1%, that means 100 dead street Judges. BUT we don't know how many new cadets are being fed into the system, maybe 10/week? So only a 90 Judge wastage.

So out of 20,000 Judges, there is roughly a 90 Judge loss every week (this number is obviously too high!)
This then begs the question, with all the current Day of Chaos deaths, how many Judges are left? and roughly how long would it take for them to recover to a pre-chaos level?

There are, or were, around 60,000 judges.

There's a Daily Star Dredd where, following a display of Dredd's fighting skills during a hostage situation, a judge comments: "With Dredd around, who needs the other 59,000 of us?"

Wouldn't that make it 59,001 then?

I'm glad to see someone with a better head for the figures tackle this.

That's what I thought at first, but I've always taken it as a mistake.

There are 305 Sectors, and according to City of Dredd (plug, plug), Sector House 301 (the Pit) had a complement of roughly 300 judges.  There's also reference to Sector House 28 where the judges were subjected to brainwashing ending up with 70 judges executed and 150 incurable, suggesting it probably had similar numbers.

Assuming 250-300 judges per sector house, that gives you a figure of 75,000 - 90,000 judges plus however many are stationed in smaller facilities, around the walls and at the Academy of Law and the Grand Hall.  So I'd take a guess at roughly 100,000 judges in total, or one for every 4000 cits.  (By way of comparison, some Googling suggests that US cities on average have one police officer for every 500-1000 people, so given Mega-City overpopulation, that number sounds fairly plausible.)

Dear God, I've just spent the last 45 minutes reading 15 pages of various population theories about MC1 involving complicated space maths!

On the plus side, it put off doing something I don't want to do for another 45 mins.

I love that thread. It gives me a big cheesy grin to think of it. Especially Si Spurrier's heartfelt and ignored pleas for us to back off.

This has been very useful for me. Thanks guys. Especially D.M. and Trout. I hope MC1 will recover very soon after Day of Chaos :)

Uh and one more thing I wonder, can i ask, what is PSU Division? I mean what is their jobs?

Public Surveillance Unit, the judges who watch the cameras and track information on the citizens.  Although not so much at the moment, since their headquarters were inside the Statue of Judgement when it got blown up.
