General / Megazine cover of the Year 2021 RESULTS.
03 January, 2022, 11:29:34 AM
Much more clear cut than the Prog vote, the winner, by some margin, was the wonderful Colin MacNeil with his daring cover of Meg 437. I love this!

In second place, stub guns ahoy with Dave Taylor's dazzlingly intricate cover to Meg 438...

And third, Alex Ronald's creepy as erm... Hell, Devlin in Hell cover!

Bubbling under were John Higgins in fourth and Dave Taylor again in fifth places.

Happy New Year y'all!

So.... the results are in and counted, and the winner, by one point, is...

Same as the OFFICIAL official Prog cover vote, yes, Chris Weston does a double whammy with his iconic jazz hands cover of 2260 (despite it featuring Walter!)

Narrowly missing the top spot, was the Dream team of Cliff Robinson and Dylan Teague with their Iconic Jaegar cover of Prog 2248:

Aaaaaaand in joint third place, it's Simon Davis' terrifying thematic Thistlebone cover of Prog 2232, 'orrible, and Dan Cornwell's amazingly trippy Dredd cover of Prog 2217! Fantastic!

HM's go to PJ who just came in fourth place for his Vertigo inspired Chimpski cover of 2234 and fifth place Cliff and Dylan again, for their soggy Dredd cover of Prog 2252.

Well done to all the artdroidsm and thanks to everyone who voted, legends all!

Merry Christmas, ya Bams!

Well, if there's one thing this messageboard is lacking, it's any kind of vote or poll! So, once again, it's time for the annual 2000 AD Cover of the Year vote! You can see all the covers (by my reckoning that's progs 2213 - 2262) here , and of course, click 'em to enlarge 'em:

https://shop.2000ad.com/catalogue/2000-ad/2021

Alternatively, you can check out the official 2000 AD Covers Uncovered part of the site by the Godlike Richard Bruton for really in depth breakdowns of most of em, unsullied with silly nonsense like logos and taglines! Go here:

https://2000ad.com/news/tag/2000adcoversuncovered/

I'd like you to CLEARLY list your THREE favourites, in order. THREE points will be awarded to your fave, TWO points for second and ONE point for third. Please try and be explicit with this and maybe give a little comment to say why you chose each cover as it makes it a bit more interesting for the rest of us!

The closing date is midnight on Sunday 2nd January 2022...

A Meg thread will be along shortly...

General / MEGAZINE Cover of the Year 2020 RESULTS!
03 January, 2021, 01:34:24 AM
This started as a two horse race, but then the winner absolutely ROMPED it!

In THIRD place was some prime Lawmaster porn from Ben Wilsher and Chris Blythe, gotta love that Dutch angle!

In second place, the eerily realistic masterpiece that celebrated thirty glorious years of the Meg by the mighty Greg Staples...

But the clear winner, the dream team who appear in the winning lists EVERY year, it's Cliff Robinson and Dylan Teague and their wonderfully technical cover of Meg 423. A thing og beauty!

Thanks again everyone! Wishing the best of health to you all!

General / 2000 AD Cover of the Year 2020 - RESULTS!
03 January, 2021, 01:15:51 AM
Well, the spreadsheet has worked it's magic and it really was a four horse race, which is fitting, seeing as we are in the end of days! Places 2-4 were REALLY close, so I'm including the all in the results, but the winner absolutely ROMPED it!

So, in REVERSE order we have...

In FOURTH place, it's Alex Ronald with his beautifully composed, dinosaurs and judges cover which is utterly brilliant and totally 2000 AD!

In THIRD place, I'm DELIGHTED to say, is the masterpiece that is Steven Austin and Chris Blythe's beautiful flower power cover of 2211.

In SECOND place, a droid who had appeared in the winning list pretty much every year, is the force of nature that is Tiernen Trevallion and his stonking, rather terrifying cover to Prog 2209...

But the out and out WINNER, up from third place last year, is everyone's pal, PJ with his gloriously composed, beautifully coloured Noam Chimpsky cover of 2178. A proper stunner that got a HUGE share of the vote! Well done PJ!!!

Here it is in all it's glory!

Thanks to EVERYONE that voted! Here's to another year of thrill powered covers!

Games / Ghost of Tsushima
24 July, 2020, 10:01:32 AM
This game is absolutely wonderful and I can't recommend it enough!

It's beautiful, like reeeeeeeally beautiful, has an excellent story (well, bunch of stories) and the game mechanics are simply fantastic. You can change and adapt fighting styles and weapons on the fly giving you a real sense of power and control. As you level up, that feeling of calm and confidence as you call out of group of bad guys is exhilarating!

As a samurai story, it's pitch perfect, with you being rewarded for being honourable in combat and an all round nice guy. However, the gravity of your situation makes it difficult not to follow the way of the ghost - using more sneaky and very much less honourable (yet more fun!) tactics. The way in which the game is constructed is exceptional as you inevitably make some difficult choices and abandon your honour code.

I saw one guy refer to the story as "You slowly turn into Batman!" which I think is a great analogy, and maaaaan, it feels so good when you get there! It also has that very Star Wars-y feel, with the quick and easy path leading to the dark side and the stuffed shirt samurai being caught up in hubris and tradition like the Jedi.

After about 50-odd hours I completed the excellent main story last night, but I've still got LOADS of side quests left that I'm desperate to get back to. I really 'enjoyed' last of us 2 but it was a harrowing experience to play. Ghost of Tsushima, which I'm sad to say will be overshadowed by TLOU2, has given me as much of an emotional rollercoaster but in a MUCH more varied and dare I say enjoyable way?

Possibly my game of this console generation.

General / Is Dredd intelligent?
15 July, 2020, 06:16:55 PM
So, I was listening to a podcast the other day and someone I really respect (a known comic fan from outside of 2000 AD) was talking very knowledgeably and interestingly about Dredd. Several times during the interview however, he alluded to Dredd being a bit thick, very much a one note, blunt instrument and it really got my goat!

I've always assumed that Joe is pretty darned intelligent. Yes, he's hard as nails, tenacious and bloody minded, but I've never (or rarely, I guess it depends who's writing him) thought of him as stupid. Despite the regime he represents.

Over the years we've seen some fantastic procedural strips with Dredd very much being the detective, we've seen him efficiently take control of, and turn around, a failing sector house, we've seen him change citywide policy and outwit and outmatch many a foe.

All that has to take some smarts, or is my love for the character robbing me of my objectivity and limited intelligence?

What say you, boarders?

Games / The Last of Us 2
20 June, 2020, 11:31:04 AM
Oh God! I've been playing this for about six hours now and, having never blubbed at a computer game, it's almost got me three times already! While the gameplay sometimes leaves me cold, this is absolutely masterful storytelling with extremely powerful characters.

Stunning!

Film & TV / Tales from the Loop - Amazon Prime.
05 April, 2020, 08:09:25 AM
Came across this eight part series on Amazon Prime this morning. I think it's an anthology series, maybe with an overarching narrative, based on the wonderfully unsettling, retro Sci-fi paintings of Simon Stålenhag. Like his work, it features kids, snowy, arable landscapes and a cool mix of late 70's tech and cool looking robots. I'm halfway through the first episode and it seems like a slow moving, artfully directed affair with some quite big names attached.

The settings, and some of the shots, capture the atmosphere of Stålenhag's paintings pretty damn faithfully. I'm more than prepared to give this a chance during the lockdown!

General / The 2000 AD Messageboard Advent Calendar 2019!
30 November, 2019, 11:01:28 PM
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, thrills in every store!

Oooooooh, it's here, the highlight of the year, welcome to the ELEVENTH 2000AD Advent Calendar!!!

Last year, we kept this thread comment free and full of juicy Christmas Thrillpower so I'll start a new thread for comments here: https://forums.2000ad.com/index.php?topic=46169.0

This years' offering from me is a VERY exciting, it's a very exclusive scoop!

Okay, so I reached out to NETFLIX and asked them if they could update me on the forthcoming BUTTON MAN series. I was amazed when they got back in touch and said they had completed the pilot and were about to release a teaser trailer! I told them about this site – how we were all fans and how we have this annual advent calendar. I cheekily asked if I could premiere the trailer on here and they only went and said "YES!"

I really like what they've done with it. The tone is spot on; you can actually compare stills from the trailer with panels from the comic! It's THAT good! They've obviously spent some money on it and the unknown actors seem to have the chops to carry the whole thing off.

So... here you go folks, the WORLD EXCLUSIVE BUTTON MAN TRAILER is here:

https://youtu.be/cS6VfPKSF_I

Enjoy!

Thanks in advance to everybody who signed up to the calendar, I can't wait to see what you come up with! Also, a massive thanks to all the folks who've contributed to the board this year, you all make my day! MERRY CHRISTMAS AND GRUD BLESS US EVERYONE!
