Help! / Re: Crappy virus thingy...
18 August, 2008, 06:38:54 PM
If you want to be really careful do a save as of the original and call it oldhosts.  Then make the changes and save as hosts, so you have a copy of the file should it all go wrong.

Dane effectively the Hosts file acts like your local DNS server, so if you wanted to call your wireless router a name.  You can add it in here, with its IP address and hey presto you can ping it.
(You have to do a reboot or you can be really clever and do a nbtstat -R from the command prompt)

Please be aware that this is for competent users and dont change the hosts willy nilly... and always keep a back up as above :ugeek:

If it does it in Firefox to, they may have hacked your hosts file.
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Open with Notepad.
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
#      102.54.94.97     rhino.acme.com          # source server
#       38.25.63.10     x.acme.com              # x client host

127.0.0.1       localhost
is all that should be in it (unless youve added something yourself).  Of course even ridding it of the pointers may still leave you with the nasty program running in the background.

Quote from: "petemaskreplica"Obviously Wells's "The Time Machine" and "The War of the Worlds" have to be on any list worth its salt too.

Regarding the Dune sequels, if you care to trust my 37 year old self's recollection of my teenage self's opinion, as I remember it the other two in the original trilogy ("Dune Messiah" and "Children of Dune") are pretty good, "God Emperor of Dune" is over-long but agreeably mental, and everything after that's shit on a stick.*

*By "everything" I mean the book and a half I managed to get through before I gave up.
Dune is a great stand alone book, the problem lies with the rest.  Dune Messiah and Children of Dune are really the same book.  Im not sure why the writer or the publisher cut them up, maybe to get the whole LOTR vibe.  But the two books could  be combined and read as one.  God Emperor is a cracking book and really explains the whole of the original trilogy in respect of Leto, Paul's son.  The book is set hundreds maybe thousands of years later (Its ten years since I read them so I may be addled) and still has the reoccurring Duncan Idaho (due to Cloning).  The rest of the books do have a diminishing return thought Chapter House I think is pretty good, Herectics is rather poor, so the whole series ends on a relative high.  Avoid anything by any other author, as what Ive read isnt great.

Also Id add in
The Mote in God's Eye by Niven and Purnelle, which describes in Hard science fiction the first meeting between humans and aliens, I was surprised that I liked it as much as I did.  For Asimov, Id go with the robots series The Caves of Steel, The Naked Sun, The Robots of Dawn& Robots and Empire which are very good and have a likeable lead character.  I also like Heinlen's Time Enough for Love, which is a discussion of immortality and long life.  Sounds dull but it is made up of a number of short tales told by the worlds longest living man, so has the 20th century on discussed.  Out of the Banks sci fi novels, my personal favourites are Against a Dark Background and Consider Phlebas

You mean on the front page? We've done that with another forum, so you get the topic title as well. That's not a problem, although someone else wanted the picture icon of who was doing it which might completely screw things. Still, all about trying things out eh?

Yes thats it.  Id like to see what thread has being posted to before I open the section.  Its just makes things a little simpler as I dont have huge amounts of time to sift through post upon post!  Cheers.

What Id like to see is what thread is being posted on in the last post section, so that I know if its a thread Im interested in without opening the section.  Just a suggestion like and it may just improve things,

Err... can someone remind me of Ennis' classic Dredd stories.

In fairness to Ennis, with the exception of Rennie, no one else has managed to get Dredd apart from Wagner.  Id say that its worth giving Ennis a go, his stories are slowly becoming better and lets be honest he's no Mark Millar

I think the fact the none of the older hands have made much of a fuss about Logan's leaving says it all.

Hell wander back in a while.  Having said that Ive not seen Trout post on the new board, has he disappeared?

Its definately an interesting change.  Did kind of like the old board aesthetic, but times change and maybe we should all move on.  Smileys?  Now no one can pretend that something has been lost in translation.....  ;)

Off Topic / Re: Schroedinger's Cat

Id agree with PJ.  As a pseudo physicist, well Im a chemist by degree.  The cat analogy is meant to show that quantum mechanics is inherently flawed.

Imagine an electron not being in a specific place around an atom as depicted by Rutherford et al.  But more like a smear of electrical charge surrounding atoms.  You can only find the probability of the electron existing in space around the atom at any time, not the actual electron itself as it may or may not exist in its classical form.  Of course using probability in this way means that the electron can then be any where and can "teleport" around the atom in an almost random fashion.

As I explained on the previous thread until Hugh Everett III came up with the idea of parallel universes or multiple dimensions (as in more than the 4 we exist in - length breadth height and time), the cat could essentially be dead and alive at the same time.  It is currently both in two different dimensions, currently they are looking at an 11 dimensional universe......

Unification theories attempt to merge, quantum mechanics and Einsteins relativity with varying degrees of success.  The most common form of unification theory is String theory which suggests  that every particle in the universe is a string or band of energy vibrating at a different frequency depending on what the particle is.  e.g. an electron has a different vibration to a proton.

Tell you what Ive read about four books on the matter and just when I think I might know what Im talking about, I get confused.

PS - Hugh Everett was actually an interesting chap, well worth a read if your interested.  His son, E, is THE member of the Eels (Rock Band)

General / Re: Positive things this board has...

To be honest, I can only repeat what others have said. "Its the best place on the Net for me!"

I find people with similar likes and dislikes, but the main positive is that if your polite about disagreeing with someone.  They are on the whole good about it.  Its not only a comic board, it does politics, TV, music; I may not always agree with everyone, I could single out a number of names here, it doesnt really matter because its all done in the best possible way.

Also Ive met a number of people, that if it wasnt for distance Id call my friends.  Im not going to list them here and for a board of a comic, I think thats good going.
