Seems a bit harsh. Why were you eliminated?

Basically because, unfortunately for me, the guy who won it was very good, his city-scapes in particular were awesome, tho' i only saw a single page of his work...

Ah, I see. They didn't do eliminations when I had a crack a couple of years back - well, not unless I missed something. The work was selected on the Saturday, and critiqued by panel on the Sunday. Consequently everyone had a hangover, I suspect. It was a bit more, "Ugh, this one is the winner...or maybe this one..."

Paul thanks for the kind words - very nice of you to say. I can see that yours was very consistent in terms of style and flow.  As I eluded to before I got a bashing with regards my cityscapes been too precise and my figure work been brasically below par , I should have used reference as oppose to being too proud in thinking I could do it straight from the imagination . I hope you give it another go next year and I'll enjoy the friendly sparring :)

If there are any others who entered please feel free to share?

Like Paul, I made it to the final but didn't win. The first page of the eventual winning entry was on the screen at the start and I thought "I'm not beating that". The best artist won.

Anyway, here's the first page of mine. Click the image to see all four pages at my website. I was criticised for my cityscape, which I tried to represent kind of abstractly, but the judges all agreed it didn't work, and the building I did draw properly didn't look like part of the same city. Some of them didn't like the way I had the main character's head popping up out of the last panel. I was trying to create a diagonal line leading through the three faces, so I'd stand by that, but if I had it to do again I'd redraw the cityscape.

And I agree with Paul that Kable's entry is very good, and was unlucky not to make the final.

That's a hell of a page, right there.

I was lucky enough to see a few of the other entries as well over the course of the weekend. Think all the artists using the same script is a great way of gauging relative strengths/weaknesses.

Thanks for putting this page up Mike and out of interest- do you know how many artists presented in total and how many made it to the finals?

No worries. A total of 30 artists presented portfolios, with eight making it through to the final. This is a higher level of entries than we've ever had before.

Next year, make them fight...

Cheers!
