Title: Meg 389 - Darklands
Post by: Freddychopper on 16 October, 2017, 09:42:38 PM
Starting the thread for 3 issues in a row?! Does nobody get the Meg in the post anymore? It's not like I've been providing Tharg special favours or anything ;)
Anyway, got mine today and will post a bigger review later, since I've only read Dredd and Dominion yet.
Suitably spooky and stunning wraparound windscreen style cover art from Nick Percival of the Dark Judges and their gang of gnarly zombies. Great image choice for upcoming Halloween. Would make a nice and gruesome movie poster.
Dredd was a nice one off with another self help group about frozen patients from a cryogenics chamber with a nice twsit. Similar set up but follows a different path to last month's Dredd. Not familiar with Paul Davidson's art but it's quite nice in a cartoony, wonky sort of way.
Went straight to Dominion, which continues to impress with its movie style storytelling and truly menacing, lavish art. Said this before, but this would be a great Dark Judges style film and I really feel we're in for a grim ending for all these colonists.
Nice feature on the new Misty/Scream special which I'll be picking up later this week.
Off to have some hot Weetabix on this dark and stormy night and tuck myself in to read the rest (Lawless  -yes!)

Lawless is back, showing all the other strips in the Meg and the Prog how to do an ongoing narrative, with lots of characters whilst having a story within a given episode. Apart from Grey Area (and Sinister Dexter) which do(es) that too. Hmmm I wonder if there is an underlying reason?

Anderson is beginning to drag a bit. This has been going on for months now. It's an epic about a threat to the whole city and the Judge system...except right now it doesn't feel that epic or that big a threat. To me anyway.

Got my Meg on Saturday, and enjoyed the Dredd and Badlands, but wish Badlands would get a move on!!
At this rate the confrontation we all know is coming will be around 2047...our time!

None of the text pages ticking my boxes these days ate Darkworld is a instant skip for me as my old peepers can't do that artwork  :o

No letters page BTW

Buy a magnifying glass. If you're not reading Dominion you are missing out.

Naw, life's to short Richard  :D there's a mountain of stuff out there that I'm dying to read, and I know its not right but I'll give most things (except incest and country dancing) a try, but Deadworld and all its minions are lost to me now.

I do try, but it was reminding me too much of the Aliens audiobook River of Pain for some reason, also its not really the detail but the lack of contrast that gets the auld peepers leaking sump oil.

I run hot and cold on the Meg most months, but this one didn't have a bad page. Dredd shone in relation to the prog, with a story I'm very surprised not to have seen before. Minor niggle: the time machine could also travel in space, but somehow managed to hop dimensions? How did that happen?
I've never been able to get through a series of Lawless so far, but this new episode had me from panel one. I may now go back and read all the others. Devlin and Dominion continued to do their thing very well and even Anderson picked up a bit this issue so it felt like more was at stake. Though that last panel was ridiculous/ hilarious.
Excellent features this month, and a floppy that will break some sort of record as the third one in a row I've actually read.
Keep this up, and maybe I won't wander into the newsie every four weeks with a sense there are much better things I could be spending my six quid on.

I'm 3 months behind on megs, these reviews are very promising...

Anyway, point is I don't recall a negative comment on Lawless till this one  :o
Please go back and mend your foolishness!

Yeah, I've never gotten on with it. Not sure why, as I generally like pretty much anything Dabnett writes. It may be the art, which to my eye is over- detailed and lacking in black, meaning my eyes get restless. Maybe I've finally come to terms with that, and can see what others see?

Well the Meg is on absolute fire at the moment. Its not often I think its better than the Prog but with the addition of Lawless to its pages, a story that would improve any comic the Meg is just flourless at the moment.

I really enjoyed this weeks Dredd, not a classic but pleasently different in tone and pace and I loved the way it largely stirred away from the action - well the set piece at the end aside. Good idea with a refreshing take.

Anderson was just superb this month. This story was in danger of dragging a little but an episode of this quality made me sad that we seem to be heading for a climax.

I'm surprised how much I'm enjoying Devlin Waugh. Taken at face value this was a plain fantastic episode of any series. Rory McConville is fast becoming one to watch and a writer I always look forward to reading now.

Lawless has yet another blindin' episode. This is probably in my top 10 thrills of all time and quite how high up that list it would be might surprise me. I'm just delighted that both Dan Abnett and Phil Winslade clearly love this series so much that they seem to make it a priority and hence its pretty damned regular in the Meg and I'm all for that. Just perfect comics.

I've said it before and I'll say it again I'm pig sick of the Dark Judges, and frankly I wouldn't mind if I did see them again... except in this... and Deadworld back in the Prog... damnit what's become of me!?! This strip is just such a prefectly framed and constructed horror tale. Its used so many tropes, but used them so well. Brilliant.

All that AND I enjoyed a good chunk of the text items as well.

Bloomin' heck the Meg is a treat at the moment.

Ha! That's a good point - can't remember seeing Devlin even feigning humility before...I wonder if we'll return to that scene later on in the story where he reverts to type and cuts those turd-creatures down to size with some off-hand quip.

Most of the Meg's ok, good to see some action in the Anderson story (even if the final panel looks like it's from PJ Masks) but Mike Dowling's art is worth the price of admission on it's own.

Only read Dredd so far and one panel in it made it entirely worthwhile the one with Dreddy explaining how chrono-jumpers always go futsie -an absolute masterpiece for me and a nice tip of a hat to Bolland and Bisley blocks in the background.

Enjoyable Meg with a thoroughly decent mix of Dredd world strips.

Thargs Terror Tales is a great idea for ongoing floppies, I just wish they had been reprinted in publishing order.
I've very fond memories of the earliest batch from the 90's including, I believe, Eric Bradbury's last work for the House of Tharg.
