Prog / Prog 664
03 September, 2009, 11:53:09 PM
Just read prog 664.  Thoughts below.

Chopper - Song of the Surfer, Part 11 - I haven't managed to decide whether or not I like the art in Chopper.  It's very pretty, but seems grainy in places (which is, I think, intentional but still bothers me).  The story's good, but I think I lose something of the last couple of pages (and particularly the final panel) from not having caught the start of the arc.

Bix Barton - Part 2 - This isn't really doing anything for me.  It feels like it's not really firing on all cylinders as far as the story goes, and the artwork, while good, doesn't really do enough to make up the difference.

Judge Dredd - Part 3 - Great episode.  First time meeting Kraken.  The pacing is really nice as it builds to the conclusion.  I guess that's what you get from Wagner.  Not really sure where this is going to go from here.

Future Shocks - "War and Peace" - Really like the premise of this, and the writing and art don't disappoint.  Probably the first Future Shock I've actually liked.  Only 4 pages long, but it might have less impact if it took longer to get where it was going.

Slaine - Volume II: Part 10 - With the proviso that I still don't really know what's going on in the story, this might be my favourite thrill this prog.  The art is amazing, and the writing of the exchange between the scribe and his god is genius.

Back Cover - This is a colour image of Bix Barton in his flying car, which looks really good.  Makes me wish the thrill was in colour (am I heathen for wanting that?).

Books & Comics / Motion Comics
02 September, 2009, 12:04:03 AM
I just caught the trailer for the new 'Astonishing X-Men: Gifted' motion comic over at Comic Book Resources.  There's more information (and a Spider-Woman trailer) available over at Marvel's Motion Comics page.

The trailers look interesting, but I think I'd want to see a full, free episode before making the decision as to whether or not to actually spend money on the things.  I also think there might be some difficulty getting them outside of the US, but I can't remember my source for thinking that.

What are your thoughts?

General / Prog Weight
01 September, 2009, 04:43:11 PM
How much does a prog weigh?  Or, rather, is there a good way of guesstimating how much a box of 230 progs will weigh so I can work out postage?

Cheers,

Dan

Books & Comics / Comic Collection Management
31 August, 2009, 06:02:56 PM
In the next week or two, I'm going to get just under 200 2000AD publications (about 180 of them weekly progs) delivered to me, to add to the 30 comics or so (pitifully few, I know) that I currently own.  I want to make sure that I have a good record of what I own somewhere, ideally online (so it's harder for me to lose), so that I can buy up gaps in my collection without having to rummage through it.

Currently, I use comicbookdb.com, but I find it to be horribly slow most of the time.  Does anyone else use an online comic collection tool and, if so, would you recommend it?

For those of you who don't use an online tool, how do you keep track of your comics?  Do you?

I really like the look of The Anchor, and I'll probably pick up (what will be) back issues once I'm settled back at uni.

So, what new series, story arcs or issues are you looking forward to?

General / 2000AD Outlets and Subscriptions
23 August, 2009, 10:03:56 PM
A couple of questions here:

a) Is there anywhere I can find a list of shops that stock 2000AD?  Failing that, can anyone tell me what shops (if any) in Peterborough and Coventry stock it?

b) Where can I find information about subscriptions?

Thanks for your ongoing help and patience,

Dan

General / When To Start Reading
22 August, 2009, 04:40:23 PM
I'm intending to start reading 2000AD on a weekly basis.  I also don't mind buying a handful of back issues to ensure that I'm not starting in the middle of stories etc.  So, when should I start reading 2000AD from?

Creative Common / The GIMP
22 August, 2009, 12:40:29 PM
I know that Photoshop is the standard program for working on comics, but I prefer to use free/open source software.  The main open source competitor to Photoshop is The GIMP.

Has anyone used The GIMP for comics work in the past, and how did you find it?

Books & Comics / What Webcomics Do You Read
21 August, 2009, 04:11:32 PM
I would like to know.  I'm less interested in the unconnected, single-strip comics (xkcd, SMBC &c.) as I already read plenty of those.  I'm more interested in getting into ongoing serials (like FreakAngels or Questionable Content (though I'm not that much of a fan of QC)).

So: what webcomics do you read?

Games / Champions Online
19 August, 2009, 08:46:39 PM
My brother has just started playing the open beta of Champions Online, and I've had a bit of a go myself.  It seems pretty good though I'm told it's a bit buggy in some places (hence it being in beta).

Has anyone else had a look, and do they have any thoughts?

General / Getting Into Judge Dredd
18 August, 2009, 06:13:49 PM
Hello all,

I've read the first volume of the case files, and would like to get into Judge Dredd more.  I also have a friend who hasn't read any Judge Dredd, but would like to.  What would you recommend reading first?

Welcome to the board / Sup
18 August, 2009, 06:11:36 PM
Hello all,

I've only recently (about 6 weeks ago) got into comics, and am looking for a place to chat about them, and get help finding interesting stuff to read.  I'm too penniless to really collect monthlies (or even weeklies), so am more interested in collected works/'graphic novels'.

I've read Watchmen, The Dark Knight Returns, the first volume of Planetary, the first volume of Preacher, the first couple of volumes of the Batman Chronicles, volume 1 of the Judge Dredd case files, Smax, Superman: True Brit, and Batman: Fortunate Son.  I do also have between 20 and 30 single issues (http://comicbookdb.com/collection.php?ID=22202).
