Floyd,

I just wondered if there is a cult following for 2000AD in Japan.

I know they are into comics in a big way over there.

Do Japanese comic fans know about 2K and Dredd?

Yeah, we're kind of intrigued whether there's a viable Japanese market for 2000 AD.

I've always assumed Japan to be fairly insular as far as comics go, because they have such a long established comics history, but it would be interesting to know whether any Western material has done well over there.

For instance, do American comics sell? Did the 'Manga' Star Wars comics sell?

Enquiring minds would love to know these things.

Dear Scojo,

The following for 2000 AD is pretty cult, inasmuch as it's limited to me!  Japanese fans know about Dredd because of the movie and they all admire the quality of the artwork and the colour (their comics are very rapidly drawn black and white erfforts for the most part).  I looked up from a megazine once to see a ring of Japanese female faces checking it out and oohing and aahing at the colour and artwork.  But it's not in Japanese and comics are notoriously hard to read for second language people (too much slang and nonce words).  I reckon if it was translated and promoted it would do well.

Thanks for the info Floyd.

As for promoting 2k in Japan, Floyd, I think the ABC Warriors sum it up nicely:

"Spread the word!"

Ok. That's it. the image of a large audience of comic reading Japanes chicks is just too much. MARK!!! Find a translator!! and i'll flip the art in photoshop so it all reads backwards!

Thanks to Floyd, our man-in-japan.

O Lucky Stevie!

are you sure that it was your "megazine" that they were oohing & aahing over, you modest scoundrel?
