Yeah I'm always in the 'button to attach to' camp, it just always feels way more solid than automatically pushing in and out of it, which always feels a bit loose and unreliable. Saying that I haven't tried Redux yet so not a comment on that.

Achievement list is here (some of them are secret so if you don't want spoilers then maybe avoid - it's just things like 'Score 100 Headshots' though) - https://www.trueachievements.com/game/ROGUE-TROOPER-REDUX/achievements?secrets=1

My only quibble is the multiplayer ones because I really want to aim for all these but know I'll never find someone to play with! A bit annoying, always takes the shine off even aiming for the single player ones when you know you can't have that satisfaction of completing them all. The inclusion of multiplayer-only achievements tends to be the difference between me aiming to get the achievements and not bothering at all sadly.

I've ordered my copy for Xbox One.
I might get a chance to have a go tomorrow or Saturday if I'm lucky.
I couldn't give a Nort's arse about achievements, I just want to play through it again.

The sometimes-dated play mechanics on this betray its age*, but with the graphics update and the size of some levels**, its easy to think of this as current generation software.
The trophy list did appear on the PS4 dash eventually, but a lot of them were listed as 0.0% unlocked on the servers, so I imagine it was just a day one thing.  It's good to find out I'm not the only one who hates multiplayer cheevos, too.  My trophy list is littered with incompletes like Duke Nukem and Infinite Warfare where I've mined the single player trophies dry, but just cannot face online play to go platinum.

* Not being able to remap buttons to a configuration more in line with the many third-person cover-based shooters that have since hit the market and created a standard layout seems like a regrettable decision.
** Arguably the existence of "levels" betrays the game as a certain vintage, too.

I forgot how thrilling the
Hoppa chase
is. Awesome bit of action!!

Damn it, someone needs to do a Petrified Forest walkthrough - I have no idea how to get to the salvage in high places.

Tiplodocus

It's taken me a bit of time to get used to the lack of motion controls and I had to abandon one level because I got stuck on the scenery but otherwise having a ball with this.

I'm amazed how many mechanics it has that I'd forgotten. And what fun it is once you have all of the tools available to you  you can approach things in different ways.

Two questions: the nort that tortures Helm, Nadya Bustikov or something... has her character model changed at all? I may be mis-remembering but I could have sworn she was showing off cleavage on the previous version. This one makes more sense.

And, if Mr. Rennie is reading, how much was written by your good self? Everything including Encyclopedia entries? Or just the main plot, cut scenes and combat dialogue.
Be excellent to each other. And party on!

She was 90% cleavage in the original game. :P

I'm enjoying it a lot more than I thought, bit underwhelmed after the first level but once I got used to the control's it got much better...just had a really good game online aswell ;)

Keef Monkey

I've not managed to find a game online yet (once I got into a lobby with someone but I left after waiting several minutes for someone else to arrive or for them to hit launch), so tried one of the progressive maps on my own. Was fun, but seems pretty tough without buddies, and if the achievements only apply to doing them online then I'll probably give them a miss.

A lot of the difficulty definitely came from me not having played any campaign yet to refresh me on the controls and mechanics mind you, had no idea what the buttons did!

I, Cosh

Never played the original of this and had it marked down for the Switch but the lure of knocking over some trophies on the Playstation might win out. Anyone care to recommend one or the other platform?

Are there a lot of rose tinted spectacles being worn here?

Well, I bought it (for the second time), this time on the PS4....and it is really showing its age. The graphical improvements do not go very far in addressing its issues and ( in my opinion) the game reaches mediocre at best, particularly by modern gaming standards.

I would only recommend it to anyone who was either heavily invested in the character or had a serious love for the old game......though you could pick up any of the Gears of War games and see similar gameplay done significantly better (without Rogue of course).

To be honest, I agree with a lot of this, although I wouldn't say it was mediocre. There are a lot of cool and exciting gameplay mechanics, and a huge choice of weaponry and gadgets that open up a ton of different strategies which allow you to approach each set piece in a variety of different ways. I also love the scavenging/crafting aspect, which I remember thinking was really innovative when the game was first released, but has since become standard in adventure games.

Some of the gameplay mechanics are dated and the improved graphics still don't match up to the standard of modern consoles. At best, it looks and plays like an early PS3 game. My 13 year old son was laughing hysterically at the jerky cut scene animations.

The enemy AI is practically non-existent, with enemies either spotting you instantly and blasting away, or completely ignoring the fact that you just killed their colleague with a headshot while they were stood right next to them, often saying "who's there?" as their pal crumples to the floor for unintentional comic effect.

Most of my enjoyment comes from the fact that this is Rogue Trooper, and being able to run around Nu Earth killing Norts, freeing Stamels, shooting down Hoppas and telling Gunnar to "synth out!" is a huge thrill.

Without Rogue, I doubt I'd even bother playing.

The Enigmatic Dr X

I agree... and don't.

I bought it for the Switch because, as Tips says, there is fun to be had in playing it on the move. There are no other cover shooters (or, in fact, any 3d shooters) on the Switch.

If Doom or Wolfenstein were out then there'd be competition. There isn't.

And, it's Rogue.
Lock up your spoons!

Okay then....with that taken into consideration I guess the review would be: "get this if you have absolutely no alternatives".  Maybe not a tagine to stick on the box.

But, it is a fair point that it would probably be better consideted as a handheld mobile game on the switch than a full title on the current generation big boys.

I do have a switch as well.....but I managed to pick this up a lot cheaper for ps4.

Tiplodocus

Well worth a punt for £20. Definitely enjoyable fun time to be had shooting space Nazis even with Rooney animation and effects. Playability is great.

The other thing for me is that I only have Nintendo consoles in the house so this is possibly the first run and shot game I've bought since... ha... probably the original on the Wii.

Actually I think I had the Goldeneye remake which was OK and a Call of Duty (World at War?) which made me feel queasy when it lavished war porn love on the flamethrower and asked me to shoot unarmed prisoners.

Oh and a bit of Mass Effect 3: Cut scene edition on the Wii U.
Be excellent to each other. And party on!
