Title: When Are you Gonna Stop Watching Those Cartoons?!
Post by: HdE on 23 June, 2015, 06:33:37 am
Howdy-ho, chaps and chapesses!

Just a quick note that I set up a blog recently, where I talk about anime. You can find it here:

https://watchingthosecartoons.wordpress.com/

I set this up just because I got nagged to, really. And it's actually quite fun stuff to write about. Over the last couple of months I've had some worrying stuff going on as well, and putting together a small, just-for-fun project has been a good antidote to that.

It'll be an irregular update kind of deal (as I'd rather spend free time making comics) but I've still given some thought as to how I can make it useful. If anime is something you're into or curious about, and the plethora of overly sarcastic, sweary and (frankly) rather naff YouTube reviews wears you down, hopefully you'll find what I'm posting a bit more to your taste.

The principal aim of it is to talk about stuff that isn't perhaps as well known, and to that end, I don't necessarily talk about brand new stuff. Some of it may even be out of print. There's some damned coool stuff out there in Japanese Cartoon Land, and it ain't necessarily the stuff everyone knows about.

Anyways, there it is. Feel free to give it a read and sign up to follow. There's a Facebook page as well, for convenience:

Little bumpitty bump for this to announce...

YOUTUBE CHANNEL!

Yeah. Bit of a change of tack this. I decided I'd take the step into doing actual video reviews. So, if you're inclined to listen to my soulful, sexy tones as I dish the dirt on Japanese cartoons, exposing the good and the bad, head on over to The Mighty Tchube and look up 'Brainjar TV'.

Ay thankyaw!

New video is up!

This time I review The Sky Crawlers, which is actually a pretty neat little bit of socially conscious sci-fi.

Figure I'll post the link here. Hopefully that's not a breach of any forum rules.

https://youtu.be/OrjP54U5wlM

And... uh... you may notice a slightly bitter vein of commentary running under the surface of this one. I had SO much trouble with the upload being accepted, it wasn't even funny.

I am a Sky Crawlers hayter.  I saw it at 3 in the morning after coming to it cold during an all-night anime marathon, and maybe I was just too tired for its shit, but I thought it overly-familiar stuff.  Corporate-sponsored proxy war is a neat idea, but it felt as tacked-on to a standard period piece as that back-end reveal, though I did like the steampunk/cgi aesthetic - much as I liked it half a decade earlier when Last Exile did it.

Oooh, it's DEFINITELY a divisive movie. The slow pace of it seem to kill it for a lot of people, but I really enjoyed it as a character driven bit of sci-fi. I'm a sucker for a slow burn, and I enjoyed the aspect of the film that you have to do just enough puzzling out of the film for everything to fall into place.

But that's me.

You are talking to someone who's seen Final Yamato at least three times, so no, I don't have a problem with slow-paced anime*, I had a problem with the fact that Sky Crawlers didn't do anything new.
I recall something about Oshii apparently trying to say that was what attracted him to the project, as the reliance on common anime tropes made the story function as a commentary on the creative state of the anime industry, but while it's a technically competent film, I don't think it has anything to contribute to the pantheon of anime classics, and that's why most fans don't have much to say about it.

* I saw Sky Crawlers at an all-night anime marathon attended by a number of people who didn't realise there were subtitles on all the films - the organisers had given out a lot of tickets willy-nilly as promotional prizes - and who got completely lost during Sky Crawlers because they kept talking to each other rather than reading the subtitles to keep up.  They'd already necked their complementary energy drinks around midnight, so about an hour into the film they started falling asleep and everyone else got to see the rest of it in peace.

So, I made a big muck up with the Youtube scheduling thingie, and ended up with a new video going up a week earlier than planned. Ho-hum - just means the next one will be a week later, I guess.

I took a look at the first of the recent Berserk movie trilogy this time. Find out what I thought here:

Latest video's up, peeps!

This time it's a little ramble on the Gundam OO movie. To my knowledge, it never got a UK release, but... anyway.

New video review is up on the Youtube page today:
https://youtu.be/Yzr3diS1gwc

This time, it's Gonzo's Blassreiter. I already covered this way, way back at the start of this little endeavour on my blog (which is now dead) but I figured it'd gain something for being shown in all its glory.

Arr! Shivver me timbers! It be a fortnight since ye swabs clapped eyes on me last video, so here be another, from the briney depths of... erm... space.

This week's review looks at 1978's CAPTAIN HARLOCK - SPACE PIRATE, as voted for in my first ever viewers' poll. Honestly a tough show to consider.

(And even tougher to credibly introduce, as nobody actually talks that in the show. Ahem.)

Anyways. Linky:

It's time for a new update. This time, I took a look at an old 1980s favourite, by way of its straight-to-video continuation:

Girls! Guns! Spaceships! Intelligent oversized alien cat creature sidekicks! It's gotta be DIRTY PAIR!

how about doing one of Girls Und Panzer?

Not an impossible or unreasonable request!

The only mandate I have for the channel is that I'll review basically whatever landed in my DVD or Blu Ray player recently. I don't have Girls Und Panzer here, and I can't honestly afford to buy a lot of anime at the moment. But it's something I've definitely got on my little list of shows I'd like to get hold of.

Time to celebrate a minor milestone - today I post my tenth video review!

This one's a bit of a curiosity. It's an all-CG Kaiju movie short - not something you find very often in anime at all. Behold the excess of NEGADON: THE MONSTER FROM MARS.

Oooh! Interesting one! I don't have that here at HdE Towers, but it's certainly the kind of show I'd liek to tle a look at. I'm quite interested to see, for one thing, how Monica Rial fares in the dub.

(Incidentally, it may be of interest to you that I just posted a new Viewer poll on the channel. You get a tangible opportunity to ask for a specific show to be reviewed there.)

Just by way of an early update...

I'm just going to share a little frustration that I had to contend with over on Youtube. It's by now pretty well known that I've butted heads (and so have a lot of other Youtube channels) with an Italian network calling themselves YAM112003 Endemol.

There's a video on my channel which details my experiences with them, which paints a picture of a pretty shady operation. Two of my videos suffered dubious copyright infringement claims from this network, and had to be removed and re-uploaded to shake the YAMsters off.

The effect this has had is that two videos that were doing pretty well in search results have sufferd a bit. One of them, my review of Blassreiter (and if that show doesn't appeal to 2000AD readers, I dunno what will) has recovered pretty well, and seems to still attract the odd view now and then.

My review of the 1978 Captain Harlock anime, though, hasn't fared so well. In fact, it doesn't appear in a search at all since I re-uploaded it - probably because YAM112003 started with their nonsense after the video's views had apparently levelled off. It's been effectively killed in the rankings.

So, I've been sounding the call for any interested parties to head on over to the channel and give it another watch. Maybe if enough folks do, I can get it back into the search rankings again.

#WTFYT

If you mean to say #WTFU?, then that's something I addressed in one of my Talking Point videos.

As far as I know, Youtube have actually told a few users recently that they're setting up a team to look into copyright infringement claims with a view to determining the validity of Fair Use in certin claims.

And not before time, given how some established media entities such as Studio Ghibli, Sony Pictures and TV Tokyo have been abusing the Content ID system.

There's a new review for the faithful today - this time a look back at THE FIRST EVER OVA! It's 1983's science fiction mini-series DALLOS, which also has the distinction of being an early work by Mamoru Oshii.

Here's the linky-ma-jig:
https://youtu.be/DWt0qF51he8

(https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xtf1/v/t1.0-9/s851x315/10649477_1053592064697988_4640079308225721972_n.jpg?oh=2f57e7afb14e64f9e80547f784fb3085&oe=5797BD82)

There's one minor wrinkle with this one. For the next 24 hours, the video is only viewable through the direct link I've posted. The reason being that I tend to 'idle' videos online for a bit before making them publicly viewable, which is a way of avoiding instant Content ID claims on videos by unscrupulous parties. Today's went in at the last minute, meaning that it went without the usual 24 hour standby period I've been using.

Rather than break my schedule, I figured this was a better way of doing things.

Mad Bull 34's a dead cert to appear sometime.

I'm still playing the game of working out which types of shows pull in viewers, but there seems to be a steady audience for reviews of 'retro' shows like that.

In the meantime, I've got Wednesday's update ready in advance. This one's been a long time coming, so I hope it goes over okay!

Some fairly sucky news to impart, folks.

Brainjar TV is in closedown mode. Here's why:

After the last claim by YAM112003 Endemol, the video that got targeted was re-uploaded and completely died in the search rankings. It went from having gone viral and amassing hundreds of views within a day to being hi-jacked and then busted down to a few here and there.

It seems pretty evident from the sheer number of people reporting these kinds of problems that it's impossible to grow a review channel while the Yambastiches are sitting on it.

But it's not the end. Far from it!

I've decided to take a 2 - 3 month hiatus, and then come back with a new channel and fresh content. This time, Youtube will be one part of the plan, and I'll look at expanding across other platforms as well.

All the old content is currently invisible on Youtube, but will eventually reappear online once the old channel is up and running. In the meantime, it seems like Youtube are assessing the copyright system abuse and making some changes to the way things work. So when I return in a few months, maybe things will be a little less nuts.

I hate to do this. But I think that, knowing what I do now about how Youtube works, it might be best to start afresh and hopefully do things better next time.

Thanks to those of you on this board who gave the videos time of day and engaged with them. It's been fantastic to log in wherever I've posted about this stuff and see responses.

That sucks, HDE.  I hope you get it sorted out soon.
Youtube's copyright claims process is bullshit, and your channel inadvertently illustrated to me why this was: I watched the review of Dallos and thought it looked intriguing, so I checked the videos down the side of the page and found the entire series available on Youtube, where it had not only been available for several years, but was also being thrown up as "recommended for you" by Youtube.
Clearly - like Youtube itself - anime fans don't give a shit about this kind of copyright infringement or Youtube wouldn't be heaving with anime (and fansubbing would not be a thing that exists) and the simplest explanation is that stuff getting flagged and removed is just another one of those baffling beefs that some anime fans have with other fans, especially those creating content or contributing to making anime or j-drama more accessible.
Title: Re: When Are you Gonna Stop Watching Those Cartoons?!
Post by: HdE on 22 April, 2016, 01:51:34 am
Hoo - long post coming up:

Yeah - the thing about the whole Content ID and DMCA drama I don't get is, entities are going after short videos that ought to be protected under terms of Fair Use or exceptions in their local copyright law. But... somebody posts an animtaed feature, obviously without permission from the original creators and owners, and it can stay up online for months or even years. Insane.

Still, in terms of picking up and carrying on later down the line, plans are already afoot.

It looks like I'll be forced to do work within Youtube primarily, which is kind of disheartening. But I may be able to expand across other platforms. There's nothing with the kind of traffic Youtube gets, but I may use DailyMotion to post advance previews of forthcoming reviews, or as a back-up in case of any further trouble. I hear DailyMotion isn't without its own copyright related issues, so I need to look into those.

Otherwise, I guess I'm placing my faith in what I've learned about Youtube's inner workings.

I started having difficulty with YAM112003 after a video got flagged by an automated Content ID claim, whereupon they subscribed to my channel and were evidently sitting on it waiting for me to post anything they could claim manually. The only other claimants I've ever had to deal with are Sony Pictures.

I've since learned how the Content ID system can be circumvented (which, saying it like that, sounds dodgy as all get out) so the hope is that I can use that to avoid problems when I start up again. And of course, I'm allowing time for Google to actually start shaping things up over there. We'll see.

One other option I'm considering is paring the videos back to static screen grabs and graphics, with no moving pictures at all. I don't want to do that, as I'd rather be able to show folks what the shows and films look like in motion - which, given the nature of the content, I should be legally entitled to do. The worry is that, doing that might turn viewers off. But then, I had to do that with my Sky Crawlers review in the end, and that performed pretty well in terms of page views.

To be honest, at this stage, it's all so much effort, with so little guarantee of plain sailing or even reward, that I feel pretty de-motivated. But the plan is to come back in July - August time a bit more aggressively. Which is, apparently, the HdE way.

I've also learned the strategy to take against false claimants as well. So you can bet I'll be fighting back against those VERY proactively if they prove to be an issue in future.

Title: Re: When Are you Gonna Stop Watching Those Cartoons?!
Post by: Professor Bear on 22 April, 2016, 11:30:16 am
I've seen people flipping their video images horizontally so that Youtube doesn't automatically filter them as copyright infringement, but this doesn't stop manual flagging.  Possibly a visible watermark on the videos assigning the correct copyright would help?

Sadly, neither of those options reliably works.

Something I was quick to do when I set up the channel was to work up a clear and valid disclaimer ascribing ownership of copyrighted material to the rightful parties. That disclaimer also cites the relevant sections of US copyright law and even, after my initial difficulties with Yam112003 (who claim to be based in Italy) the relevant exception to Italian copyright law. I've also been flipping the video since day one. Neither of these measures stopped material from being automatically flagged by Content ID - even after I cited the latter to the claimant.

Content ID being an automated system, you can guess at ways to defeat it. I won't go into too much detail on the subject here, but I've worked out how to get around it, and that figures into my plans going forward.

To be honest, it sort of sucks that I have to spend time thinking of ways to play Youtube's system just to get content uploaded that I'm perfectly within my legal rights to do so. But then, the tricky part of this that nobody seems quick to acknowledge is that some protection against actual copyright infringement needs to be in place.

Hurrah for broken systems, I guess!

Just a heads up - this wacky anime reviewing adventure I've been on has taken a bit of a sabbatical, but begins again in a matter of days!

I've got a new channel, and there have been some behind the scenes developments that seem to have warded off the dreaded Yams *quite decisively*.

I'll begin posting content on a weekly basis next month, which will be a mix of the old and the new. Here's the link for those who feel inclined to lob subscriptions my way. There's already one video up, just coz.

AND WE'RE GREEN FOR GO!

The new channel is officially open for business. By way of a special launch day bonus, not one but TWO new videos are available to watch this week. Both are oldies from my previous channel.

So, if you're inclined to see (or remind yourselves) what I thought of MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM OO - A WAKENING OF THE TRAILBLAZER or BERSERK - THE EGG OF THE KING, now you can!

For giant robots and mile-long laser beams, click here:

For hyper-violent medieval adventures and severed limbs a-gogo, click here:

And for a good time, call this numb-- Uh, WAIT! Ahem! Ahahaha!

(Just watch the freakin' videos!)

Well, last week's video performed abysmally, without even passing 20 views. So I've altered plans this week to serve up some brand new content ahead of schedule.

*I suspect this one might appeal to forum regulars.*

Here it is - a review of GHOST IN THE SHELL - THE NEW MOVIE.

Has there ever been a lazier name that GITS: The NEW Movie? Probably not, seeing as GITS being the sci-fi juggernaught it is has more or less depleated all the edgy, pre/post The Matrix sub titles imaginable.

Yet to see this, but i've been thinking a long rewatch of all the GITS material is long over due.
Title: Re: When Are you Gonna Stop Watching Those Cartoons?!

I suggest a few equally lazy titles for future movies at the front end of the video. I'm literally aghast at how short sighted that title is. But, whatcha gonna do?

For me, it's all about Stand Alone Complex. CLASSIC series, great sci fi, brilliantly plotted. Anyone who digs a well put together science fiction story owes it to themselves to check that out - and to persevere with it if they don't at first get on with it. It's one of the most rewarding shows I've ever seen in anime.
Title: Re: When Are you Gonna Stop Watching Those Cartoons?!

Oh yeah - incidentally, as big a deal as Ghost in the Shell is, and as much as people tell me they love my videos, this one is performing TERRIBLY. Presently, it's recording just five views.

FIVE VIEWS.

At this rate, it's actually unlikely that I'll persevere with the channel past the end of the year. Half my old subscribers still haven't migrated to the new channel yet, I'm still getting claims from the bastards at YAM112003 Endemol despite winning my disputes with them, and, frankly, it's all feeling like more effort than is worthwhile.

So, if anyone on this board enjoys what I'm doing, PLEASE share the videos. PLEASE hit the like button, and PLEASE subscribe. All those things have a direct effect on the channel's visibility and help it to grow. As thinsg currently stand, if I can't muster at least 100 subs by the end of this year, it WILL be shut down.

I hate posting stuff like that, but them's the breaks.

I'm not quite as enamoured, but I do see good things in this one (and several of the others!) - hopefully you'll agree I strive to be fair.

It's probably worth disclosing: Originally, on the old channel, my plan was to run a complete series of reviews of these films. A pal set me up with legit copies of everything bar the Juri ONA that you could unlock as a downloadble extra in Street Fighter IV.

The reviews got derailed during my re-launch shenanigans, but they'll still appear at some point. I've been editing one of them tonight, as it happens!

This week's review is up, and it brings with it a fresh turn in the saga of Youtube lunacy.

The review itself is of the Gundam shot film collection GUNDAM EVOLVE, released earlier this year in the States (cheeky tip - it actually plays on Region 2 DVD players as well!)

Here's the link:
https://youtu.be/34J_NphFAqo

Here's a pic:

And here's the lunacy:

SOMEBODY has evidently decided they don't like my channel. While watching views for this one update in real time, yesterday it accrued two new views and - get this - EIGHT dislikes.

This is pretty suspicious. The only way you can register multiple likes or dislikes on one video is by setting up multiple accounts and using those to post them. So it would appear that somebody is doing this without actually watching the videos.

This doesn't actually harm my video in any way, but it's a bit aggravating. So if you watch the video within Youtube, do me a favour and whack that like button - assuming you DO actually enjoy it! If you don't... well, tell me why. I can use constructive input to make better material.

Youtube's difficult enough without these childish attempts at demotivation.

Well i'm currently working my way through a boat ton of 80's OVA anime, mostly of the sci-fi and mecha genres. Iczer-1, Dangaioh, Gal Force and Patlabor (the first iteration of many I believe) to name a few and would love to see our good resident anime boffin HdE take on a few of these, providing YT's ridiculous copyright system doesn't forbid him.

Always happy to take requests! There's actually a few that are forming a rough list things to work through. Some of this got derailed when I decided to shut down and re-launch, but I'm slowly getting back on track.

Speaking of mecha shows, though, you might find this week's new review of interest...

... and here it is!

I butted heads with YAM112003 Endemol and WON to get this one published without copyright claims. Halfway expecting them to put a fresh claim on it at some point, but I'm definitely more easily able to fight them off now if they do. Anyway - watch it while it's hot! This one's a review of MAZINGER EDITION Z - THE IMPACT!

And that's not all! A couple of older reviews were re-posted recently as well. I deliberately didn't update the thread here as I figure they've already been linked to here in the past. Repeating myself gets old.

Righty! Updatesamungus!

I've been a bit quiet in this thread, as previous updates on the channel have either been re-posts of old videos or incidental features. But I'm back to post a MAHOOSIVE update!

First up: Brand NEW review! This one's a look at a show from 1999 which deserves LOTS of love. I even ramble at the top of the video about another show by the same director which blew my socks off. So consder it a double recommendation, if you will. The main event, though, is DAI-GUARD!

Direct link to review:

Also, recently republished ahead of a Stateside budget re-release, is my old review of THE LEGEND OF THE LEGENDARY HEROES, which you can find here:
https://youtu.be/E6BM3cAcaWQ

I've also published a couple of shorter videos which work as companion features to other reviews.

You can hear my thoughts on the live action teaser trailer for Dreamworks' Ghost in the Shell, starring MoScarjo Hannsonagi, here:
https://youtu.be/quX4jOYXJJM

And for anyone curious as to how I go about reviewing mecha shows (like Dai-Guard) I talk about the mucky business right here:
https://youtu.be/IFeiGYOLxL8

So there you go! Hopefully that'll keep the three people who post in this thread happy for a bit!

And just a brief reminder - if you haven't subscribed to the new channel yet, now would be a VERY good time to do so. Some folks are telling me theyre not seeing updates, and it turns out they're expecting to see them on the Brainjar TV channel.

I've been very clear about this, so I don't know how people are missing it: There will be NO new anime content posted on Brainjar TV. So if you're still subbed to that, you need to head over to 'HdE Does Anime' and subscribe there instead. I'm keeping the old channel open as a redundancy, but you're unlikely to see very much of anything new there.

Latest review is up, folks!

Seeing as there was a fair bit of interest in my review of the Street Fighter II animated movie across social media (even if it didn't translate into meaningful views) I figured I'd return to the franchise and look at another of its animated tie ins.

This one's an oddity. STREET FIGHTER IV - THE TIES THAT BIND has only ever been made available previously as a pack in extra with deluxe editions of the video game it's based on. And that's a damned shame.

Click this here link to find out what I think of it. And witness a cringe inducing 'homage' to one of my favourite Youtube channels:

So I might not have gone straight out to watch Street Fighter IV but I DID spend a large chunk of my none working hours with weekend watching Dai-Guard on HdE's recommendations. And? It's pretty darn nice actually, I agree the end of the millennium animation style has dated somewhat but nearly 20 years after production i've found it's developed a kind of charm to it. The plot and characters where never going to be award worthy but it passes the time and garners enough investment for the eventual pay off. And as far as super robots go, their are certainly worse examples on the market. Thanks for the recommendation, HdE!
Title: Re: When Are you Gonna Stop Watching Those Cartoons?!
Post by: HdE on 24 October, 2016, 11:46:51 pm
Ayyy! Glad I was able to point somebody in Dai Guard's direction! Charming is certainly the word for it. Maybe it's not as dazzling as the latest megabucks Gundam show, but it sure has its heart in the right place.

Incidentallishly, if anyone IS wanting to get their hands on the Street Fighter IV movie, I can recommend spending a bit of time scouring Ebay. I'm informed that the special edition release of the game often comes up at less than the RRP of your average brand new movie release. If folks are savvy about it, it can be obtained for less than limited edition money.

This has been an HdE anime procurement advice message. Have a nice day!

Nice selection of reviews you have there. Are you going to be doing Michiko and Hatchin? I'm watching that at the moment and am loving it. The art style reminds me a lot of cowboy bebop. Any love for Dimension W? I'm hooked on it right now

I'm REALLY interested in that one. That said, I only review shows that I can get hold of physical copies of. So until Dimension W gets an on-disc release, it's not going to appear.

That said, there's been some disheartening developments of late. With major advertisers pulling away form Youtube, what little regular revenue the channel was making has now completely evaporated.

Considering each video takes a MINIMUM of 8 hours to prepare, it's time to re-evaluate. And drastically.

Duly noted.

Unfortunately, I've just heard some rather crappy news about a change in Youtube monetization.

As you might have seen, my revenue has been throttled. It turns out Youtube now requires smaller channels to have 10,000 lifetime views before they'll allow ads to run on videos.

Translation: This just became a dead loss venture.

I'm going to sit back and contemplate my next move for a bit. But it's now clear to me that Youtube isn't a viable platform for a channel doing my kind of traffic.

My two bits based on watching far too many YT channels punch above their weight is to change all your thumbnails for your vids to ecchi shots and make the titles potshots or shoutouts to more famous Youtubers who generate similar content, to encourage YT algorithms to paste your work alongside popular channels and garner drive-by clicks.
Also make your vids family-friendly - no swearing - as this will stop them being flagged by YT's ad content filter (basically if you swear or show unsuitable content, YT automatically filters roughly 85% of ads from ever running on your vid, meaning less revenue).

It actually seems to be a pretty good time to try and grow your channel, as YT's changed a few rules seemingly arbitrarily and destroyed a lot of long-running feeds overnight.  Someone has to fill the void and let weaboos know what moe ecchi is out there to fap to.

Just to give some inight into how broken Youtube really is:

My two bits based on watching far too many YT channels punch above their weight is to change all your thumbnails for your vids to ecchi shots and make the titles potshots or shoutouts to more famous Youtubers who generate similar content, to encourage YT algorithms to paste your work alongside popular channels and garner drive-by clicks.

Nope. Not doing that. For one thing, I generally hate boobs 'n' bum style anime, and for another, I take great pride in not being a complete dick.

Also make your vids family-friendly - no swearing - as this will stop them being flagged by YT's ad content filter (basically if you swear or show unsuitable content, YT automatically filters roughly 85% of ads from ever running on your vid, meaning less revenue).

True fact - none of my videos have ever been flagged as 'advertiser unfriendly.' Not even the ones where I run my potty mouth.

I actually saw the shift toward 'ad friendly' content coming a mile off when I saw how the site was becoming a shoutbox for the likes of Laci Green and her opponents. That was provoking some MASSIVE debate and a lot of traffic on the site, and I knew policy changes of some sort would be imminent. So I'd already made a conscious decision to re-brand the content and make it as unobjectionable as possible.

It actually seems to be a pretty good time to try and grow your channel, as YT's changed a few rules seemingly arbitrarily and destroyed a lot of long-running feeds overnight.  Someone has to fill the void and let weaboos know what moe ecchi is out there to fap to.

That's a good idea. For another channel. That isn't mine.

As you might have seen, my revenue has been throttled. It turns out Youtube now requires smaller channels to have 10,000 lifetime views before they'll allow ads to run on videos.

How are off are you?

Whups! Almost missed this.

Currently, I need around 2030 views to meet that target.

HOWEVER! It's important to mention that the way views work and get recorded is actually quite involved on Youtube. Simply clicking a video and watching part of it doesn't really help much. In fact, depending on the length of the view, it may not even be recorded at all.

What really helps the channel a lot is if folks click on a video, or a playlist, and watch the whole thing from start to finish. Not just because it racks up those views, but because viewing a video in its entirety actually injects data into Youtube's engagement algorithm. That's what determines how high the video places in search rankings, and whether other people see it.

Comments and likes help, too. Although I've been deleting quite a few of those, of late. People acting like knobs on my channel aren't even remotely tolerated.

I'd suggest creating a playlist of all your videos, then asking the kind folk here to open it in their browser and let it play away on mute in the background (that's if they don't want to watch of course) You will need less than 100 people to do that, and considering this thread has over 6k views it's not impossible.

Ultimately, I'd rather folks watched my videos because they sincerely wanted to. That said, I'm way ahead of you on playlists. There are several already available on the channel.

In all honesty, 2000 views is a pretty attainable figure looking over my current channel stats. The bigger issue is whether Youtube is worth bothering with at all considering how quickly the landscape changes ver there, and how lacking in transparency they are.

I don't follow many YooToob Slebs, but of the ones I do (sci-fi, comics and videogaming channels, naturally), three have been impacted by YT's arbitrary rule changes to the point it now interferes with their content, and one has even had his entire income wiped out.
I know, I know - it's tempting to laugh at the idea of "Youtube Celebrities" having to get a real job rather than cruise by on being Internet Famous, but this guy spent half a decade building his audience - hundreds of videos, millions of hits - and was using the revenue to pay for his college tuition, and mere weeks before the changes were introduced had started posting videos showing him moving into his first home with his girlfriend (also a student, so her life just got more expensive, too).  Youtube's careless fuckery is actually derailing lives and threatening people's futures, and if anything that's giving them the benefit of the doubt that they're only being incompetent and haven't been deliberately holding fire on enforcing these terms for years in order to build their brand at the expense of legitimate media creators.

Hopefully this will give rise to a YouTube alternative....which will be good until some billion dollar tech company buys it and f's it up a la YouTube...

There's a lot of truth in the to comments above, fellas.

What I'll say on the matter is that I'm hearing a LOT of comments from creators on Youtube along lines of 'screw this, we've had enough' and I'm already seeing some channels with huge followings upping sticks and relocating elsewhere.

That's actually my plan. I'll continue to use Youtube, a it's a platform with an established user base (for now - I also see signs that indicate that could change soon.) But I'm going to be migrating to Vid.me as soon as I've cleared my current lettering workload and had a chance to catch my breath. There are some other ventures underway as well, so this is a bit of an unplanned period of plotting out what the next move is.

Frankly, though, I won't be sorry relegate Youtube to a secondary outlet for my videos. Their attitude to communication with the folks who are creating content for their site (and let's not forget - THEY take a substantial financial cut of all revenue) is apalling. And the user base, at its worst, is an ugly thing to deal with. In the last month, I've banned more users than ever and deleted more comments than I think I've actually allowed. You also can't comment on the realities of seeking a financial return for the hours and hours of effort a Youtube channel requires without some dumb shit wading in and accusing you of being a money grabber, making content for the wrong reasons, not being sincere about the stuff you post, etc.

But it's the constant flip flopping of policies and stances on serious matters that's really torn it. This is the SECOND time in as many years that Youtube's behind the scenes nonsense has given me serious cause to stand back, halt video production and consider if the whole venture is worth it. To have not earned a fiver in all this time for my work, and to receive NO SUPPORT WHATSOEVER from Youtube, is pretty galling.

Subscribed, nice, bite-sized chunks, may watch/listen to a few in my lunch hour at work next week.

Aw, cheers, dude!

Just to forewarn you, if you're going to be watching at work: while I take pains not to stray into NSFW territory with the videos, I do run my potty mouth on the videos under the 'When Are You Gonna Stop Watching Those Cartoons?!' banner.

Once the title card changes over to 'HdE Does Anime,' we're in less offensive territory, just so as you know.

Thanks for the warning, but no problem - any youtubing during my lunch hour is with earphones in!

Well I binge watched Macross Plus recently, and I gotta tell you dude, that series is dynamite!

Macross Plus really is pretty good, innit?

It's one of those weird cases of a show that did nothing for me when I first saw it. But when I popped it back in my DVD player one rainy afternoon, months later, I couldn't take my eyes off it!

Then again, any anime with WALTER FRICKIN' WHITE in the dub has to be worth a look, right?

He also crops up in Armitage III, Street Fighter II - The Movie and a few other bits and pieces.

Thanks, fella!

I've not been put off rest assured. Been editing a couple of new reviews as time permitted me this week, as a matter of fact. Just waiting for a few things to sort themselves out before any of it gets shifted into my 'To Do' list proper.

Bubblegum Crisis (and Crash) have both been requested a few times before. They're in my personal stash of anime, so they could very well happen - especially as they're both short enough to get watched in a reasonable timeframe.

I don't mind Crash. There are some perfectly valid criticisms of it out there in the interwebz, but I was entertained by it.

That said, it's been a few years since I last saw it. Might be worth seeing how it holds up to a re-watch!

NEW VIDEO ON DECK!

I've managed to steer my channel back into profitable territory (thanks in no small part to the support of regular viewers - including a few of you lovely peeps) so I've slowly, cautiously started up the video production machine again.

The latest update on the channel is a review of CAPTAIN EARTH, a spiritual successor of sorts to Star Driver, another giant robot show animated by the same studio, and written by the same two guys who gave us Revolutionary Girl Utena.

Here's the link. Please do shower it with likes. Because that eases my existential pain and gives me the validation a fragile snowflake like me needs to survive.
