Title: The PARAGON comic thread
Post by: Daveycandlish on 24 April, 2017, 03:14:58 PM
Let's just start with a few previous covers...

Don't they just look fantastic?

That's just a few of covers from past issues.
Not only have we had 19 regular issues but THREE Jikan Chronicles - collecting the stories of the time-travelling demon-hunting samurai,
TWO Spencer Nero Compendiums - the British agent who finds astonishing strength whenever he dons the mask of Janus,
collected editions of the complete stories Undertow and Cushing & Sons, four hardback christmas annuals and two horror comic spin-offs.

Now we are back with issue 20 and a swish new title masthead.

You know, there are professional publications that don't last this long and yet here we are, still going strong with a fantastic line up of stories. Recurring characters in stand alone stories so you don't need to know what has gone before as long as you know the basic premise;

Jikan - a double length episode - what if the time-hopping demon-hunting samurai landed on the Titanic? And he's not there to ice his drink...

Spencer Nero - Spencer Nero in India, and as enlightened and sympathetic to the people whose country it actually is as you'd expect an agent of the British Empire to be...

Bulldog - the anthropomorphic protector of the skies of Blighty! Bulldog has been going for over twenty years now - PJ Holden is a previous artist for his adventures. This issue, the Queen is dead and there's a search for a successor...

Not only do we have the regulars this time around but a one off, light hearted quest for a ragtag bunch of adventurers in A Star Falls
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/daveycandlish/A%20Star%20Falls%20Page%20preview_zpsxfzklt8s.jpg)

Over 40 pages for £2.99 (plus p&p)

It barely takes twenty minutes to read an American comic these days but for much the same price you could have a lot more fun reading a good old fashioned British anthology. This isn't an homage or a pastiche. This is a continuation of the fine style of comics I grew up reading in the 70s and 80s.

Buy your copy from the blogspot  http://paragoncomic.blogspot.co.uk/ (http://paragoncomic.blogspot.co.uk/)
or, if overseas, via lhttp://www.lulu.com/spotlight/PARAGONcomic (http://lhttp://www.lulu.com/spotlight/PARAGONcomic)

Contributor Dirk van Dom put it better than me when he said on his blog;
"No, it's not mainstream, its not glossy, its not full colour, it doesn't feature superhero types in gaudy-coloured spandex costumes pounding 50 shades of inconsequential sh*t out of each other, or female characters who have nothing going for them other than big tits and improbable asses. What it IS, is an old-school, no-bullshit, boys-own action/adventure comic reminiscent of the 2000ads and Eagles and Warlords and Battles and other glorious black-and-white comics that were so, so cool in the 80's. Its hard to find a comic nowadays that inspires the same kind of feeling picking up one of those comics back then did, but Paragon comes pretty close and it keeps on getting better. If nothing else, its got a lot of heart and its clear everyone involved has a great passion for the medium. Yes, I contribute to the comic so I may be a little biased... but I am just one of 10 people (writers, artists and letterers) whose work is featured in this issue, and every one of them deserves to have their work seen. If you don't like the stories, you might like the art. If you don't like the art, you might like the stories. If you don't like the stories OR the art, you might appreciate the effort and enthusiasm that has gone into every page. If you don't like that either, well, hey, at least you can say you tried!"

20 issues of a small-press title is something to be very proud of, Davey.

Just gotta say - I'm really grateful for Davey giving A Star Falls another airing in the pages of Paragon. It was previously published a few years back in the Metaverse anthology, which I'm not sure has had a much wider distribution than being for sale at the convention it debuted at. A crying shame, that.

When small press stalwart Stephen Prestwood died last year I almost gave up on PARAGON as he had been the backbone of the comic for so long. It was only the enthusiasm of the other contributors that encouraged me to continue. Stephen had the final episode of Bulldog in his inbox to work on but never got to it. I've now found an artist who can finish the story off - all will be revealed next issue - but in the meantime, here's one from the vaults;
Bulldog has been going for over twenty years and here's a classic story, drawn by Paul Harrison and written by Jason Cobley

How many other small press comics can boast it has had contributors of the calibre of Si Spencer, Shaky Kane, PJ Holden and Garen Ewing? (I can only think of one!) Pro letterers Jim Campbell and HdE give it a professional sheen and the likes of Chris Askham, Steven Denton and Matt Soffe have all worked on covers over the years.

PARAGON is a continuation of the fine British tradition of action adventure anthologies. If you are a fan of such things, why not give it a go?

It's SMALL PRESS DAY!
Why don't I show you a bit of art from the next episode of Bulldog?
I was so grateful that my first choice artist to take over from the late, great Stephen Prestwood agreed to do so - and here's a page from the brilliant Dunk!
While you're about it, why not grab a copy of the latest issue of PARAGON? Not many small press comics reach twenty issues - hell, these days not many comics from the big boys reach twenty issues!

I love this strip so much I thought I'd share the first couple of pages with you so you can see how good it is; Tintin inspired art and the story is a buddy movie in comic form - the two classical composers combine forces to solve a supernatural murder mystery. I mean, what's not to love?

Okay chaps I need your help. If you are reading this then you have probably read the  PARAGON comic threads or you may have read an issue previously. Hopefully you've enjoyed it or enjoyed what what you've seen here.  As I write I have given out more contributor comps of this issue than I've sold. And that is disheartening considering how much effort goes into producing an issue. To not even have made double figures in sales makes me feel it isn't worth that effort. I think it's a great comic, people who give me feedback tell me similar. Hopefully you do, too.

If they grew up reading British comics in the 70s and 80s and still read comics then this will be for them. The fact that the Treasury Collection editions of Misty, Faceache, One Eyed Jack and Leopard from Lime Street from Rebellion seem to did so well tells me there is an audience out there if only I could reach it.
So please, help spread the word. Buy a copy yourself and see how the publication has evolved since last you read an issue.
Without your help to increase the audience I don't think I'll carry on with it, which is a crying shame as there are some wonderful scripts and art lined up for future issues.

Ah, Davey- that's a shame- but I know what you mean. Sales for any of the books I've made in the last couple of years have been a shadow of what they were.

I'll see about doing some catching up myself- Paragon really is worthy of support!

I really enjoyed it!

A lovely, little, small press anthology. Nice variation in stories and art, the way it should be.

It really feels like a lot of love has gone into it from all concerned. Three cheers for small press! :)

A few observations.

- In the pdf, I couldn't see the cover, just the stories. Wonder if that's down to my settings somehow. The cover itself shows up on lulu's page for the issue and does look great though!
- I'd suggest adding a page summarising each story, much like Tharg does on page two each week. That would help new readers settle in.
- I found I got more out of it on the second read and by reading it slowly. Interesting and I think a good sign.
- I would put the title on the first page of each strip. I'm looking at you, bulldog! ;)
- I'd consider more intro boxes in places. Sometimes on a page turn, there was a jump in location that would benefit from a short intro. E.g. "Back in the doghouse...". Of course, that might be me being slow!

Anyway, an absolute bargain in pdf or print. Give it a whirl, good people!

Quick and entirely serious question, Davey:

Do you think Paragon could do with a fresh lick of paint? As in, an overhaul in the book design? New logo, layout for interior pages, etc.

Might be a good way to make the book a more appealing prospect for punters. I mean, we KNOW the content is quality stuff, and that it has a lot of time and care poured into it. But maybe giving it a sleeker front end and overall packaging would help 'sell it' a bit better.
Title: Re: The PARAGON comic thread
Post by: DrJomster on 23 December, 2017, 11:30:35 PM
I'm not sure. The last cover was really quite good. I quite liked the ones before as well.

I wonder if the P&P costs are the issue? For example, issue 21 was literally 99p on lulu in pdf  but earlier issues with postage are quite a lot more individually. Perhaps the answer is more sales at cons thus dodging the P&P costs?

Or is the answer also a good quality finish in terms of physical paper quality? Would that work better at cons? Some of the recent Futurequakes have been quite (I.e. very) nice in this way.

Side note. If sales are low, would this preclude booking a table at a con?

Just to be clear, I'm not talking about quality of artwork so much as quality of design. There's a big difference between the two.

I feel your pain, Davey.

One of the big reasons why we decided to call it a day on Massacre For Boys was that it was obvious that interest was tailing off. Was hard to tell if the problem was specific to our comic or a wider decline in audience for the small press, but I strongly suspect the root cause was a little of both.

Personally, I felt the quality of our last issue was the highest ever, but that virtually no one was prepared to read it any more.

I wish you better luck with Paragon, which has been a major player for years and years now and has a really strong roster of talent.
Title: Re: The PARAGON comic thread

Thanks for giving me so much food for thought everyone. To throw my own thoughts into the mix;
I know you thought the title logo I used for #20 was an improvement, HdE, but I don't think that would have worked quite as well with this issues cover. I didn't intend to change to it permanently but I'm willing to try anything that helps push the comic into more hands. Likewise, maybe the contents page does need to go and be replaced by 'Story so far..' boxes on the strips themselves. The whole look of PARAGON was based on Dez Skinn's WARRIOR magazine from the 80's so maybe it's time for revamp or at least a rethink.
DrJomster - if you ever get your hands on a physical copy I'm sure you'll agree that the comic is a quality product. (Big headed of me, I know!)
I know what you mean about the P&P incurred when buying from http://www.lulu.com/shop/paragon-comic/paragon-21/paperback/product-23437825.html (http://www.lulu.com/shop/paragon-comic/paragon-21/paperback/product-23437825.html) so I always offer the alternative of buying direct from me at http://paragoncomic.blogspot.co.uk/ (http://paragoncomic.blogspot.co.uk/) which is a little cheaper.

BLATANT PLUG At the minute (until the end of Jan 1st) you can get FREE P&P and 10% off by quoting BOOKSHIP17 at the checkout when buying from http://www.lulu.com/shop/paragon-comic/paragon-21/paperback/product-23437825.html (http://www.lulu.com/shop/paragon-comic/paragon-21/paperback/product-23437825.html) so if any of this thread has piqued anyone's interest now is the time to buy a copy!  :) :)

I really think the proliferation of non-comics taking over comic cons has had an effect on small press. I've heard so many tales of people not breaking even at the things but if I continue printing PARAGON it has to be the path to chase. I know when I did  the Canny Comic Con a couple of years ago I sold out of all I took with me so I think if I can get the comic in peoples hands they can see the quality and will buy it.

Any comic that has had the likes of Shaky Kane, Jim Campbell, Si Spencer, PJ Holden, HdE, Garen Ewing and stalwarts of the small press like Greg Meldrum, Mark Howard, Stephen Prestwood and Scott Twells as well as Star Wars sketch card artists Alex Mines and Matt Soffe contribute must be worthwhile, surely?

Sorry for the stream of conscience. I hope some of that makes sense!!

I know when I did  the Canny Comic Con a couple of years ago I sold out of all I took with me so I think if I can get the comic in peoples hands they can see the quality and will buy it.

I suspect that is the way forward - David Broughton and I recently sold the last of the first print-run of 'Martillo', but the vast bulk of that was David selling in person at cons. I handled the online sales, which were a mere fraction of his. I know myself there are small-press comics by friends of mine that I've regrettably still not got round to getting the most recent issues of, but if I saw them on sale in front of me, in the flesh, I'd undoubtedly snap 'em up there and then.

Youre most welcome. Thank you!  I'm in the UK, but don't worry, it's okay. I think the prices I saw were in dollars, so maybe I took a wrong turning somewhere.

Yes, that's a great review, Davey - they really get the point of the comic, and of the small-press in general. The ability to go for broke on idiosyncratic ideas is one of the things I love most about creating these sort of stories.

Also- for #22, how many pages and what else is in the book this time?
Title: Re: The PARAGON comic thread
Post by: Daveycandlish on 11 September, 2018, 07:31:23 AM
It certainly is  :)
Jikan - the time travelling demon hunter (think a cross between Hammer film Captain Cronos and WARRIOR's Father Shandor with a samurai spin) is our cover star, as depicted by the marvelous Mal Earl.

32 pages of comic strip action can be yours by going to pargoncomic.blogspot.com and clicking the cover to order!

What else is in there? More preview art to follow in the next day or two...

I'm sure you know that Ian Fleming worked in the British Secret Service during World War II.
And that Fleming and Christopher Lee were related. Lee also served in the war in the Special Forces.
Did you know that Jon Pertwee was interviewed by Fleming for a post at one point? (Pertwee served in the Navy)

Imagine that team; Fleming, Lee and Pertwee.
That's like James Bond, Doctor Who and Dracula!

What a team they would make for British Intelligence!
Read the first adventure for this super team up in the brand new issue of PARAGON!

Written by Dirk Van Dom
(from a plot by Dave Candlish)
And illustrated by David Metcalfe- Carr, the Shadow Rats is not to be missed!

But sweet Nellie Bligh - will you look at that...

These look brilliant! What other comic has Doctor Who and Ian Fleming fighting Saddam Hussein? Not to mention long time hero of the small press, the anthropomorphic aviator Bulldog and a time travelling, demon hunting samurai AND Spencer Nero, the civil centurion?!! Honestly, you are missing out. Go to paragoncomic.blogspot.com (http://paragoncomic.blogspot.com) and buy one!!!!

This is my total stock of back issues of PARAGON.
There are only THREE copies #2, TWO copies of #4, four copies of #9 (the debut of Spencer Nero!) and ONE copy of #14 left.
Plenty of numbers 3 & 6 but only TWO copies of the latest issue - number TWENTY FIVE!
How many comics get to that number of issues these days?!
If you'd like to catch up on previous issues PayPal me £3 to daveycandlish@gmail.com stating which number you'd like.
Or as an extra bargain, you can have two for £5!

The PARAGON #27 Kickstarter is now live!
This issue's cover story is a murder mystery buddy-buddy story featuring two warring classical composers turned amateur detectives. It's a comedy.
If that doesn't grab you, how about a sumo wrestling anthropomorphic Bulldog?
Or the sequel to the tale of Icarus - the boy who flew too close to the sun... and was rescued by aliens?
Or the latest episode of the celestial enforcement agents sent to earth to arrest an escaped demon?
Or a little seen reprint of a short tale by the late Si Spencer? And more!
32 pages, A4 magazine sized action adventure anthology.
Lots of reward options including back issues, graphic novels, t-shirts and original art!
Back the Kickstarter and join us in one of the longest running small press comics :-D

With less than a week to go for the campaign to run, time is running out for you to back the latest issue! I've already started prepping by ordering in a supply of the 72 page graphic novel, Icarus Dangerous, as the sequel starts in #27. If you'd like a copy of this fantastic tale of the boy who flew too close to the sun (and was rescued by aliens) you can get your hands on one by choosing the Dangerous Option on the new Kickstarter.
Also on offer are the Wotan T-shirts as shown below, depicting the Norse god as seen in episode 2 of the Tintin-esque Brahms and Liszt - the two warring composers turn amateur detectives to solve a murder mystery involving... Hans Christian Anderson?! It is not to be missed!
You can also get your hands on some fantastic original art by regular contributor Scott Twells. So if you want a piece showing Jikan the time travelling, demon hunting samurai or Spencer Nero, the 1930's British agent obsessed with all things ancient Roman, booting a Nazi leprechaun up the arse, or indeed any of the PARAGON stable of VERY weird heroes, back the arty option!
You can even get issue 27, a back issue, the Icarus graphic novel, original art and t-shirt for the ridiculously low price of just £30 - just back the Whole Caboodle!
But be quick! Time is running out!

I called it PARAGON because I honestly believe there is no better small press comic out there. Others come and go. Others may get the plaudits but none match the consistent quality of this long running anthology. If you don't believe me, try it. Just once. Go on.

ONLY 3 DAYS LEFT TO GO ON THE KICKSTARTER http://kck.st/3syJ2uh (http://kck.st/3syJ2uh)

There are two stories that see episode 2 in this issue (you can buy the previous issue as an option on the Kickstarter for an extra couple of quid) and two complete stories included.   :)
Hoping to have a fifth story start in this issue, too (depends on the contributor getting it to me in time, fingers crossed)

18 pages of El Bigote - the undead Mexican bandit who fires deadly quills from his 'tache.
15 pages of Spencer Nero; the British agent who finds inhuman strength when he dons the Janus mask - all the better for punching Nazis and riding dinosaurs.
Plus part three of the further adventures of Icarus - the boy whose homemade wings melted and plunged to earth only to be rescued by aliens.
And a classic Bulldog - the anthropomorphic defender of the skies above Blighty as he thwarts a sabotage attempt by Vegenation spies.

It all adds up to the best small press anthology around! Only TEN days left on the Kickstarter - back it today!

As one reader said;
"The British small press is flourishing at the moment, and comics like PARAGON are at the core of why that is- sheer love, passion and enjoyment for the comics form is evident from every page. Particular mention must be made of ... EL BIGOTE- which is one of my favourite things in the world. I could stare at every panel for ages- and this one has several whole pages that are just awe-inspiring."
Those kind of comments make my bitter old heart almost glow with happiness!
So if you like a comic that isn't a pastiche or homage of the comics you grew up with in the 70's and 80's such as Valiant, Eagle, 2000AD or Warrior but is a continuation of that style then PARAGON is for you!

#29 sees cover star SPENCER NERO go all Doug McClure with him fighting a zeppelin full of Nazis - and dinosaurs! Written by Greg Meldrum, illustrated by Scott Twells, letters by Filippo (Blazer, The 77)
El Bigote - the undead Mexican bandit who fires deadly quills from his moustache - is back in a double episode as takes on zombie Conquistadors! Featuring art from the late, great Stephen Prestwood.

This is something I've wanted to do for a long time! A hardback, special edition collecting the very best of Captain Winston Bulldog's adventures.

Bulldog has been around the small press for many, many years created by Jason Cobley in the 90's and illustrated by a plethora of artistic talent, many who have gone on to professional gigs, including the likes of PJ Holden (2000ad), Phil Elliott, Garen Ewing (The Adventures of Julius Chancer) and Neill Cameron (The DFC) along with many other notable small press names such as Mitzi, David Goodman and the late, great Stephen Prestwood.
For those who don't know, Captain Bulldog in an anthropomorphic hero defending the skies above Blighty during the Vegenation War (invading sentient vegetables and terrorists!) and from such ne'er do wells as Herman Von Hermann (aka Herman the German!)
Originally seen in Bulldog Adventure Magazine which morphed into BAM! when it became an anthology, these stories and that comic were the inspiration behind me launching PARAGON as an action adventure anthology (now in to it's 16th year!)
This book collects all the stories that I have reprinted in my anthology comic, PARAGON, since 2014 along with one which hasn't been seen in over 20 years. Over 100 pages of great stories, great art and great gags, many of which have been digitally re-lettered for a 21st Century readership.

There's some elements of this strip that I drew ... what 20 years ago? that were so satisfying to draw I've never been able to capture it since.

With just a week to go on the current kickstarter, have you backed it yet?
Behind amazing covers by Mitzi and Mal Earl lies a new full length story for Danny Drisco, the dwarf detective, as he clowns around at the circus trying to solve a murder, all brought to life by Greg Meldrum and Scott Twells.
Spencer Nero also returns for a complete tale, teaming up with 1940s film star ... George Formby??!!! More Nazi punching shenanigans from the pen of Greg Meldrum and artist Dave Metcalfe-Carr.
Add in the first episode of a brand NEW adventure for Captain Winston Bulldog by his creator Jason Cobley with PARAGON newcomer Garry Wharton on art and it's a winning combination!
And if you'd like to own some original art there are still sketch card rewards available from both Filippo Roncone and Davey Candlish.
Don't miss out! Back the Kickstarter!

If you've bought the latest PARAGON I hope you enjoyed it and if you do, you may be interested in a brand new Kickstarter I've just launched; PARAGON presents Bludd & Xandi Book One.

This is something I've wanted to do for ages and with the recent discovery of unpublished pencilled pages by Tom Newell (who has since gone on to work on 2000AD along with fellow contributors to this book, Jim Campbell and Karen Holloway!) it seemed a great time to print the complete story in one collection. Written by Mark Howard (you may know his work from Zarjaz as well as PARAGON), it includes all five episodes in a card backed, square bound, A4 book (Think Tintin book and you get the idea) with over 20 pages of extras including unseen art, writers notes, pin ups and more! I think you'll love it - and there is still a chance to grab a sketch with your copy if you are quick!
