Books & Comics / Re: Usagi Yojimbo thread

Glad you enjoyed it. The only thing I dislike about Usagi Yojimbo is the wait for each new book. I don't think I've been disappointed by a volume yet—and that's a very rare thing in comics. (I'm a big Mignola universe nut, but some Hellboy has been wobbly, and I've gone off Abe Sapian, which now appears to be rambling.)

Any official word? All those news articles are based on Rebellion's press release.

It's been all over the place since August at least. Just rumours, as ever, though.

Ah, the day when Hershey went mad by wearing a face like the Joker and her non-reg high-heel boots. (That always was a very odd star scan.)

Arg. I hadn't heard that Metalzoic got canned. Bugger. I was looking forward to that.

It was really on the nose, wasn't it? And in a way that I'm not sure I was comfortable with. It's perhaps unfair, but it feels a bit weird for Who to be dabbling in terrorism analogies, despite WW2 ones being fair game (because of the distance), but there you go.

Scary Clara was pretty good, Front was nice to see if miscast, and I suppose this gives Moff another chance to kill off Osgood, just to piss everyone off. But it felt a bit of a mis-step on a series I've largely enjoyed so far. (And if the rumours are true that Capaldi's not long for Who, that will be a great pity, though; he's getting better and better in the role.)

There is of course at least one major loophole: Northern Ireland did NOT pass these changes in law, meaning it's become the UK's last outpost of crazy regarding lawsuits of this nature. Sky wavered for ages regarding showing Going Clear, on the basis that if the broadcast could be viewed in Northern Ireland, Scientology could sue the corporation there.

With 2000 AD, I can't imagine there's any risk these days, primarily because the landscape has changed so much. Mild satire/parody of this nature has long since been eclipsed across all media. But even the changes in parody law remain incomplete as long as one part of the UK refuses to implement them.

Trademark infringement is a tough legal battle to win. In the cases of obvious parody, you'd have had a hell of a time in court in the 1970s, let alone now.

The problem is, once you start viewing infrastructure money as effectively charitable donations, income would fall off a cliff. Many people wouldn't pay for what 'they' don't use, even if it was for the greater good. Fundamentally, too many people are selfish — and I don't discount myself from that. I don't support every website I read, for example, via Patreon or other funding. Same thing, ultimately.

I'd love to see a complete Luke Kirby collection, especially in a big hardback. 258 pages of strip. A few covers and 'star scans'. Lovely.

I suspect it'll never be collected though. It's one thing reprinting Zenith, given that Morrison knew full well he was work-for-hire. But reprinting work by an ex-editor who clearly knew the system and was allegedly assigning rights accordingly would be a much tougher prospect. Daft though, because the strip will forever remain a tiny footnote that will never get another airing.

From the other side of the fence, I've moderated forums since the 1990s. With one exception, this forum has the lightest-touch moderation I have ever seen, despite having certain members who are frequently hostile to those doing that job. Note that this is done entirely in there free time and often involves quite tedious management work, fixing errors and helping users when requests are made regarding broken posts and errors.

It's also notable that whereas most forums operate a pretty strict policy regarding membership/banning, it takes an awful lot here for the latter of those things to happen, regardless of what people are posting. I wish people would remember that more often before trying as fast as possible to get their knickers in a twist.

Wasn't it just General Mills that got its knickers in a twist originally anyway? The whole thing's bizarre, really. Plenty of British comics have done far harder satire than this story.

Rowling was rejected numerous times. That alone should be enough for people to persevere.

I only got one extra book, not two, and unless you had one with 'Grannell' on, it wasn't mine!
