That's a harsh call on a long-term forum member. Particularly when he was probably about 12 at the time.

Are you sure you don't mean then 2000AD art editor Robin Smith?

Could well possibly be him, I didn't have the book on hand at the time. Thanks for correcting me and apologies to long-term user, Robin Low for slurring your good name & reputation, hope I didn't offend you in any way!! I blame the fact that there's one too many individuals named Robin in the world of 2000AD.

Steve McManus's side of the story on Mr. Bishop's blog here, (starting from the bit about Zarjaz monthly)...

http://viciousimagery.blogspot.com/2007/02/28-days-of-2000-ad-7-steve-macmanus-pt.html

Yep, I remember reading about that in Kiss My Axe! I believe he mentioned that this incident was basically the start of his "issues" with the comic and its Management.

Quote from: Funt Solo on 20 March, 2024, 09:10:06 PMGiven Mills' notorious temperament, it's useful to hear both sides of that story.

With all due respect, I wasn't taking Pat's side, just writing about what I remember reading about in Kiss My Axe!

Quote from: AlexF on 20 March, 2024, 11:10:26 AMBetween Kiss My Axe and various Sláine collections intros, Pat has spilled an AWFUL lot of ink in prasie of that first episode of Sláine, the amount of effort Kincaid put into it, and how shabbily he feels she was treated by 2000AD at the time.

Anyway, totally agrfee it's an amazing one-off story and would have loved to see more.
Technically, she does have a second Slaine credit, as the author of the 'Killing Fields' sequence that came between Slaine the King and Horned God.

And yeah, would have been nice if more female artists had been attracted to / given a chance on the Prog back in the early days!

I believe he mentioned that both Robin Low and Steve MacManus were sexist, misogynistic dinosaurs who claimed that her art wasn't up to standard (in other words, high quality) and that at the time, both upper Management and so-called "fans" (who were "busy" writing in to complain to Tharg about her art) had wanted her gone.

Quote from: IndigoPrime on 06 March, 2024, 07:53:11 PMNo, I initially thought the same about the two characters. Not sure who the journo was. Again, has anyone noticed him before? Is he a previous character?

As for "grandpa Dredd is slightly keener to fight the horror than to dish it out", I dunno. It feels like he's happy to just kind of ignore it so he can get on with doing his own thing. And despite his misgivings for Hershey, it's notable that during her time, Dredd was effectively considered council and had the clout to match. Now? Hard to say, but it doesn't look like he has any real influence at this point.
He was previously seen and later mentioned in "Carry the Nine" by Rob Williams, Arthur Wyatt and Boo Cook (Part Two & Four, Prog's 2201 & 2204) back in 2020.

A major character or a major supporting character...?

Quote from: IndigoPrime on 28 February, 2024, 04:28:47 PMI dunno. What is a major character? Dredd these days is more like several universes running in parallel. But there surely becomes a point where a character is prominent and influential to the degree that they matter. I can't imagine too many would begrudge Giant that status, say. Or Nixon. Or even Janus, for that matter.

Also, purely subjectively, I liked this character. She was in many ways a breath of fresh air, in all kinds of ways. Wiping her out makes Dredd's world a little bit duller, and judging by quite a few frames in the strip, primarily populated by intolerant men who care far more about power than justice and people's wellbeing. Which is perhaps the point and a nasty analogy for today's reality.

You can imagine something similar today, in various areas. UBI has been tested dozens of times now, for example. You just know governments are waiting for the one time it goes wrong to tear it down and hurl it into the sea. Same here. Her project ran effectively for an entire year. But one fuck-up that my MC1 standards isn't exactly massive (and that is clearly the result of antagonists) and – boom – it's all gone. (Probably. I guess we'll know for sure next week.)

Quote from: Rogue Trooper on 28 February, 2024, 05:15:31 PMMain character status?

Cal was in ten stories. Maitland fifteen.

Of course, it's subjective.

I dunno, someone who made a long-term impact on either the title character, location and/or a story/character arc, whilst still alive...?

Quote from: Richard on 28 February, 2024, 11:46:55 AMAs much as I enjoy an unexpected double-page spread like this, I'm not convinced that Maitland is really such a huge character in Judge Dredd to warrant the massive reaction this seems to be evoking in some people (although I'm glad they are enjoying it).
I completely agree with you and personally don't believe she warrants Main Character status. Regardless, I'm looking forward, not only to next week, but also the next thrilling chapter of this arc.

The trouble is, that hardily anyone ever seems to post in some of the threads anymore.

Quote from: JayzusB.Christ on 14 February, 2024, 02:24:55 PMI didn't mean to suggest that nobody should ever post here any more - I have absolutely no problem with anyone paying their respects here to a person who had a genuine impact of one kind or another on their lives, and I'm happy to read these tributary posts.

I just don't think it was ever meant to be an exhaustive list of today's deaths, which I think is a pointless and somewhat morbid use of the forum.

On other forums that I (in)frequently visit, this seems to be the exact point of similar celebrity / famous individuals condolences thread(s).
